This reminds me of creating a realistic game that has different worlds from easy to almost impossible for 1 whole year to be rewarded for life if still alive
I'd argue the cooler transformations in Tooie and the ability to play Mumbo was a nice idea but it didn't really improve on the BK formula : transformations are still super specific to 1, maybe 2 jiggies, or to open pathways for regular Banjo, same with Mumbo. It would've cooler if they were more useful
@@The_Room_2_Doggys_Revenge I definitely do agree with it would have been cooler to be more useful. Though…in Kazooie they literally are just size changers to get into specific areas. At least in Tooie you have different missions like shoot all the zubbas and wash the laundry of the worker rabbits. Tooie may not have made the transformations mind blowingly good, but they did at least marginally improve the transformations abilities and goals.
I've never understood the backtracking argument-Tooie has such a loose jiggy requirement to beat the game. I remember calculating it and realizing only about 1 jiggy per level actually requires backtracking. If you were to skip every jiggy that makes you go back and just go straight for Grunty once you hit 75, you would still have enough wiggle room to skip MORE challenges (like the Canarie Mary challenges lol). Casual players basically have it far easier with this game than it does with Kazooie. As a completionist tho I actively go out of my way to do thes challenges, so I do understand it somewhat. But the worlds are connected in a way that you wouldn't even need to return to the hub to get to where you want to go and that's awesome tbh. More often than not the backtracking is pretty streamlined in a way that you could either do things quickly or get back on track later. Like, for the cavemen mission where you need to go to WW to get them food, that takes less than a 3 minutes. However say you didn't have the right powerup to climb the wall back to TT, that's ok. You can take the train back to TT and continue from where you left off. Or go to another world through similar shortcuts to continue a different level. As a kid the inter connected world designs and sense of big exploration was the main appeal. I would frequently reload old save files and just go to worlds to enjoy the atmosphere. I get that there's not much to do in some places or it's just too spacious, but that didn't matter at all to me as a kid. I just enjoyed spending time with Banjo and Kazooie tbh. Not to mention all the QoL improvements which enable things like actual satisfying speedrunning (imo)? Sorry but Tooie just beats Kazooie for me on so many levels.
The Banjo community needs more vocal fans like you to help push for a series revival. But saying "You don't have to 100% Tooie" is not a valid defense to legitimate criticisms of the game's level design.
Thanks I really appreciate that! We need a series revival for sure! After replaying and analyzing the whole game I didn’t find a lot of the “issues” people complain about. Like Terrydactyland. If people don’t like to collect things and complain that’s who I am referring too. Not necessarily people who think certain collectibles need to be altered or condensed because of inherent bad design. (Like colored bananas in DK64 for example). I believe Tooie holds up pretty well. If you want my complete thoughts on every element I’d recommend checking out my Analyzing Tooie complete edition video. :)
@@jiggylookbackIt’s kind of funny; in my opinion, the colored bananas from DK64 are a lot of fun as a collectible, similar to the notes from Banjo-Kazooie. They show up in places you’re already going to and encourage you to explore new areas of the level while leading you to Golden Bananas, as well as helping you keep track of places you haven’t explored yet. The actual issue with them is that the tag barrel requires you to backtrack a huge amount over the course of the game to get them. If the game gave us the ability to swap Kongs at will, I’d be surprised if most of the criticisms of DK64 would hold up (full disclosure, it’s my favorite of the Rare platformers). Kazooie was essentially a miniature version of DK64 without a tag barrel, and it definitely works. I personally prefer the sprawling levels in DK64 and Tooie, but the notes are a great collectible, and they serve a triple purpose as a progression-facilitator, a more minor objective to collect while you’re traversing a level, and a completionist’s endgame reward. Tooie greatly decreases the amount of collectible notes by more than one fifth while more than doubling the size of its worlds, which not only makes the wide open levels emptier with both more space and fewer things to collect in that space, but it also doesn’t show natural paths to jiggy puzzles and objectives or mark your progress in a level as the notes of Kazooie and the colored bananas of DK64 did. There’s a fair amount of distance to cover between things you can interact with when you first enter a level in Tooie, and most of what you can do between those things is defeat enemies (that gain you nothing and respawn anyway) and collect consumables that you are usually already at capacity for. In the clip at 7:24 where you argue against Terrydactyland being or feeling empty, while you’re flying around the level, I can see the following things: The water basin for the thirsty Dino, Mumbo’s hut, an egg to hatch, a pool and waterfall (maybe an underwater rock to break or a cave behind the waterfall; it’s been like six years since I last played it), and an alcove in the rock wall. There’s not a single note or permanent collectible to be seen or picked up (maybe you already got the one or two notes that would have been there, but I can’t remember their placements in this world), and most of that stuff that I mentioned seeing is actually inaccessible when you enter the level. You can’t hatch the egg until you get enough notes AND find the correct Jamjars move tutor, you can’t do anything about the thirsty dinosaur until a world or two later when you activate something that you didn’t know would actually provide water for it, Mumbo’s hut is largely useless to approach unless you already know where you need to take Mumbo (Mumbo can fulfill a single objective and is extremely limiting to walk around as), the cave behind the waterfall leads to a grouping of other things that you may or may not be able to complete, and I can’t remember what was in the alcove. Now imagine being on foot as both Banjo and Kazooie and traversing the same area that you flew over. The space between things feels larger at ground level, you move more slowly than you do while flying, you continually reach objectives that can’t be interacted with, and there’s very little to nothing that you’re collecting in the process. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely stuff to do in each level, but with the level size massively increasing, the amount of Jiggies staying the same, and the amount of notes massively decreasing compared to B-K, Tooie finds itself with far more open and uninteractible (“empty”) space compared to both B-K and DK64, the latter of which has 25 main collectibles as well as 500 colored bananas, two fairies, a battle crown, and many colored coins in each level.
@@iliya1933 however about Terrydactyland you’re also accounting the big space for transformations which this is one of the unique levels we get 2 transformations! As well as several caves filled with unique characters. It doesn’t necessarily have to have as many collectibles. The game gives you plenty of ways to traverse faster like flying or splitting up and hauling butt with Kazooie. Not too mention the smaller transformation interacts with the enemy Dino’s in a unique way and you can have conversations with them. It did have things to collect but I for sure grabbed them lol. Tooie does offer a cheato cheat for speeding up banjo which also helps. Tho you need to unlock it. You’re right it doesn’t have as many collectibles and that’s tooie as a whole. I think that would offer more to do but I love the worlds personally! Terrydactyland I’m not saying is an A tier level but it’s not that empty and boring like people said. It’s got a dope theme, dope music, lots of little things to find. It’s just large which in my book doesn’t equate to bad. Now if it had no redeeming qualities I wouldn’t defend it but I think it does. I’m also a big DK64 fan if you haven’t seen my other videos. I agree switching at anytime is nice and there is a mod for it which is awesome! You should watch my defending dk64 video I cover a looottt of stuff. Same with my defending Tooie video :) Thanks for watching and engaging in discussion! I love this stuff!
@@jiggylookback Oh yeah, I’m not saying that Terrydactyland has nothing in it or few redeeming qualities. It’s actually one of my favorite worlds in Tooie (I also prefer playing Tooie to Kazooie because of the larger scope), but I also think the criticism of it feeling empty when just playing normally is as valid (and true within the context of Tooie) as it gets. Talking to the dinos in the little transformation is great, but that’s a niche situation in which you’re transformed for a very specific goal (and you can’t interact with any other objectives while transformed). I’m not saying that’s a problem, but it doesn’t counteract the “emptiness” claim when most of your time traversing the level is spent as the bear and bird combo. Same with separating the duo. You can’t drill, you can’t ledge hang (though Kazooie’s movement options often counteract the need for this), and you usually need or want to be playing as the pair to easily access most things. That means that, while there is a variety of traversal options, most of them only happen when you find a specific use for them, and you’re still just running around on the ground, covering a wide open space as B-K as I described in my last comment. I’m not saying you’re wrong in your opinion or that Terrydactyland is poorly designed or anything, but the practical experience of the level for a lot of people (considering the amount of Tooie and Terrydactyland detractors) is what I described, wider areas with spread out things to interact with and fewer meaningful collectibles between them.
Tooie gets so much undeserved hate. I always liked it better than Kazooie. Great music, lot of collectibles, pretty visuals and big worlds with fun level design. :)
Completely agree, none of Tooies worlds feel empty. This was always a valid complaint about nuts and bolts but for some reason people have started saying it about Tooie.
The thing with the levels being empty that you have to consider is that the worlds are bigger, Banjo and Kazooie move at the same speed as before, and the kicker is everything is bundled in nests. In Kazooie there would be 100 notes to a level, and each note was just...a note. In Tooie, while each level still has 100 technically, notes are collected in nests of five at a time; plus the treble clefts worth 20. That adds up to only 17 actual collectables. Or consider how Glowbos replace Mumbo Tokens. In Tooie, each level has two Glowbos, one for Mumbo and Wumba respectively. Compare this to the five Mumbo Tokens in every level just for Mumbo. The levels are big enough to require warp pads, but the but the collectables are all nested up so there's considerably less than them. I think it's pretty easy to see why someone would say the levels feel empty in this case, and I flatly disagree with that section.
Fair enough. Glitter Gulch to me feels the most empty of all the worlds in Tooie. I think my comments are more geared toward Terrydactyland specifically. I will say though I really don’t feel the worlds are empty besides Glitter Gulch there is a lot to do and collect in them. Bunching notes into nests was good.
Banjo Tooie was the unintended first DLC release for video games. Because I can’t choose which is better because I play both games for different reasons and they have similar but different playthrough ability. Nostalgia, color, score and levels for Kazooie and the move/smooth gameplay, replayability and story for Tooie
I got to play Banjo-Kazooie a couple times at a friends house growing up. It was my Favorite N64 Game then and still is. Later I bought it and Tooie as well shortly after but didn’t play it until I had Covid back in Nov 2020. I spent all 3 weeks playing from start to nearly finish and it is somewhat more of a struggle with the back tracking but at the same time, it’s a great challenge. I love both.
the reason i like Kazooie better is mainly because the levels being so big that there is alot of negative space where you are moving around in non-interesting ways. like just walking. the one thing i legitimately hate about Tooie, is they made the worlds so much bigger, but the notes were simplified to packs of 5. it just made exploring every nook and cranny less satisfying. and Kazooie is just a more lean game. it is kind of like the games Grow Home and Grow Up. Grow Home was incredible, and Grow Up expanded things horizontally, and it was just a weaker over all experience. or DOOM 2016 vs Eternal. or Breath of the Wild vs Tears of the Kingdom. sometimes the more simple and lean game is nice. or bigger is automatically better. also i played Kazooie when i was like 5-6 and it was new, and i played Tooie a few years after it came out. i just have more nostaliga for Kazooie as well. i love both games though, but if i am gonna replay a Banjo game, 75% of the time i gravitate toward Kazooie.
I think Kazooie is easier to pick up and replay for sure. It’s a tighter and leaner experience like you said. We’re a similar age because that’s about the timeframe I played these games. I also love exploring every nook and cranny. If we got more collectibles that’d be sick! But I also love DK64
@jiggylookback I always thought the issue wirh DK64 wasn't that is had too many collectibles, it was that the collectibles are character specific. It would be fine if you didn't have to back track and switch characters to grab a specific color banna all the time. But I do love that game too. All of Rares n64 platformers were great.
kazooie was lovely but casual tooie felt like the first aproach of many players to an interconected giant open world filled with puzzless, just as good if not better music, top visuals for the generation and more mature theme without being as explicit as conker. there's a reason tooie is my favorita n64 and RARE game ever released.
I love both these games so much, it's tough to pick a favorite. My only actual gripe with Tooie is, I don't like that they clump the notes together in nests. I want to collect them individually, I think it would fill out the worlds more, plus I like the challenge.
If they ever did a Banjo Kazooi3, I think they should give every World two Acts; one where they're small & self-contained, and another that unlocks halfway through the game that make the worlds more expansive and start connecting them Tooie style. Mario Odyssey's post-game where it starts mashing together characters & concepts from discreet areas feels like a good model. Would give the best of both worlds I think.
I always say the flying and swimming in this game feels so good! Everyone by default expects it and ignores good swimming levels because of the historical stigma, but this one is a huge improvement!
I never recognized that Tooie allowed you to switch directions while rolling around. There are two thung Tooie lacks: Click Clock Wood and Freezy Peak. Those were the two absolute highlights including their tracks. I loved how Tooie connected the worlds but having the four seasons in one level and the seasons affecting each other was so cool too and I loved how the music changed from one season to another. Especially Freezy Peak gives me a festive feeling which i do not get in the winter levels in Tooie.
I could understand why bk fans didn’t enjoy bt so much. Bk nailed the collecthathon formula, with fun open levels that got more challenging as you go. You could 100 percent every level 1st try besides freezeezy. Bt completely changes that and it feels like you’re playing a different game, so I can understand the disconnect. Bk went from a 3D collecthathon to 3D open world adventure collecthathon in bt.. I still think both games are great for what they do
I like Tooie a bit more. It has a bigger, more interesting cast of characters, such as Jamjars, Humba Wumba, and many more. And I also like the level themes, because they used some, that were not overused in other games, like an amusing park or an ancient Maya world.
While I personally don't agree that Tooie is the best of the two (for me personally, it's BK1>N&B>BK2, but they're all great!), I am very glad I found your channel and have been enjoying your content and your interactions with people (including myself). From one Rareware fan to another, thank you for what you do and you have earned yourself another sub :)
At the end of the day it comes down to opinion! I don't think one of these games can truly be better than the other because of the differences. I personally prefer Kazooie, I didn't like the huge worlds in Tooie and all the bosses, but that's exactly why other people like the game! I think that's what makes it such a good sequel, is that its very similar to the original gameplay (screw you nuts and bolts) but still very different! Great video, you explained the differences very well
At first glance, the obvious winner is Kazooie. It has more memorable music, performs better, and is easier for most players to get into thanks to everything being contained in each world. However, when you play through both games, Tooie is the one that feels like a much more satisfying experience. Maybe some people feel that the backtracking hurts the game, but speaking as a Metroid fanboy, that's one of the reasons I love Tooie more.
I really loved both games for their own reasons, but the biggest (and probably silliest) reason I liked Tooie more was because Banjo's roll attack was SIGNIFICANTLY improved upon in Tooie. Where in Kazooie you stop after you complete the roll, Tooie you can continue running and even change direction with the roll. It just made the game feel better for me.
I believe in playing the game as intended with the original console and controllers is crucial to really capture what the developers were going for. The “magic” if you will! It’s important to me. No hate for other ways to play just my personal preference!
In a small way I want a new Banjo game however perhaps the games were as perfect as they could be for that time period and the magic just could never be replicated in the modern day. I guess what I am saying is that my appreciation here is that you are just loving the games as they were and not letting the games die in our memories.
Finally somebody says it! Tooie IS better!!! And it’s still so unique in the world of 3D platformers, it’s closer to a 3D Metroidvania with big complex interconnected worlds. Personally that’s my favourite part of the game, how complex and intricate the levels and quests are. Grunty Industries is unironically my favourite level in the game! 😎🖤 And I just love the darker moodier atmosphere and how Banjo and Kaooie’s personalities are more fully fleshed out, and the writing UGH THE WRITING *chefs kiss*
I agree with you! I love the Metroid Vania exploration as well! It’s one of my fav games of all time too! I think it is better than Kazooie tho I don’t fault those who don’t!
As good as Tooie is (easily top10 N64 games, but not top5), Kazooie is just that little bit more perfect. It just doesnt have any flaws compared to it sequel, that has minor gripes. Kazooie isnt just top5 but a strong contender for any rank within the top5.
Can’t argue with that thought! My personal taste highlights Tooies exploration and slightly more refined base gameplay but I know my personal taste though I argue in the video why I think it’s better is not the case for a lot of people. I’m actually surprised I hear a decent amount of Tooie over Kazooie while I expected it to be almost a universal Kazooie is better. It’s nice to know we can all appreciate these like art and have subjective opinions while valuing different aspects.
When I was a kind, my parents bought me Tooie without knowing it is a sequel and I have fond memories of it. I have played Kazooie only in recent years and I have found it amazing, but I agree with you, Tooie is the best! Nostalgia plays a role in my case, but overall, Tooie has much more to offer
Banjo Tooie would honestly be the vastly superior game (in my opinion) to BK if it wasn’t for backtracking, excessively empty spaces in the levels, didn’t make some moves redundant, improved updated mini games or less mini games, kept a tiny bit more of the happy Banjo Kazooie charm (such as dancing at the 10th jiggly, more rhymes, happier music for some sections and certain parts of some levels looking less grey) while still balancing it out with the more dark theme, and JamJars wasn’t the main voice for everything. Otherwise, both of them are one of the greatest games ever made.
See I didn’t miss the jiggy animation too much if I’m being honest but yeah maybe for the last one. I didn’t mind the backtracking either. The mini games I wholeheartedly agree although I think they aren’t bad they just make us do them over and over.
@@jiggylookback Tbh I'm actually glad they got rid of the jiggy animation for every single jiggy you found, sometimes I just wanted to move and not wait, but the celebration dance for the 10th one would have been fun to see. The mini-games & backtracking felt like a chore to me at certain points but to each their own. If there is ever a remake/remaster of these games, maybe they can add or improve upon some stuff in Tooie (Kazooie is perfect the way it is). Nice comparison video btw.
@@SxVaNm345 thanks a bunch! I really appreciate you taking the time to come and check it out! Kazooie is nearly perfect minus the note score thing and if it cut back on the jiggy animation I wouldn’t complain!
Love your videos! You do such a great job. I just found them and subscribed. Talking about Threeie, have you played the Kurko mod, The legend of Banjo Kazooie: The Jiggies of Time? It’s amazing.
Thanks so much!! Glad you found them! I have briefly played it on stream in fact! I want to do a full playthrough and maybe review at some point! It was WAY more in depth and length then I expected
@@jiggylookback 100% agree. Also I actually feel like BK & BT are so different from each other, I love them equally, BUT BT is one of the VERY few sequels that actually don’t just retread what came before it and surpass it in many ways.
I think they’re both incredible but I’ve absolutely played Banjo Kazooie more. Tooie I’ve never beaten 100% and I replayed it on XBA a couple years back (and enjoyed it way more than I thought). I still need to go back and play it on my 64, assuming it still works. 😅
@@jiggylookback Same Banjo Kazooie is my favorite game ever and my rankings are 1.Banjo Kazooie 2.Banjo Kazooie Grunty’s Revenge 3.Banjo Tooie 4.Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts 5.Banjo pilot
Tooie has a stable frame dip because it's on a physical cartridge instead of a disc or hard drive or internet based system. It's loaded mostly all at once. This is why I'll always love cartridges
2:15 This (adding Kazooie) to the attack was likely done as to justify why Banjo can't do it by himself when he splits up (as in Kazooie, it was only Banjo that pulled off this move). That's also probably the reason why they changed Claw Swipe from Kazooie (where it was just Banjo punching) to Peck in Tooie (where instead, it's just Kazooie who does a 1-2-3 peck attack ie. a grounded Rat-tat-tat-tat, with Banjo using his weight to ground the attack), so it would make sense to Banjo to learn his own move (Pack Wack in this case). PS. For all the flack Claw Swipe got (which to be fair, there were very valid issues with the move), I still enjoyed the move and used it whenever I saw an opportunity XD 6:14 Actually that's the only time you ever actually have to backtrack in Kazooie and that's only if you are going for 100%. I like Tooie over Kazooie, but that's one aspect that Kazooie has Tooie beat.
I played Tooie first as a kid. Have tons of nostalgia for it. Didnt play the original Kazooie until 15 years later on an emulator. Kazooie is the better game
In the sense that it’s a tighter experience with more replayability. As someone who likes to wander I still support Tooie being better 😂 and I prefer the gameplay. I think when people can finally mod the Tooie engine and make worlds like in Kazooie but with Tooie gameplay that would make the perfect balance!
Back then I preferred Tooie. But after recently replaying both games I give it to kazooie bc of the pacing. Also it feels more varied. Tooie feels a bit dragged, it is very much walking back and forth. I‘m not against backtracking but I think it is just not well implemented. It feels like they just wanted to stretch the game. I also didn‘t like mumbo as a playable character. The only good use for im was In the first world and the Mission with healing the dinosaur baby was clever. Also the worldbuilding is too complex and I think it‘s just annoying sometimes. I would have preferred if they made 15 Jiggys per world, but with more interesting missions. What I really like is the moves you can learn, also the split up is very fun.
for me, backtracking is really satisfying and adds so much life into every world, giving you the feeling like they are all connected together. I think the reason people are getting mad is because of all the walking you have to do to enter previous worlds but still, since you got the train and all the other entrances to the worlds it becomes very easy and for me, super satisfying. Tooie just feels like a more mature and balanced game, just and improved overall version of the original. The only small things I miss are the eyes on each item you collect and the noises they make ): Those small things like animation after collecting jiggy or having to bash buttons or notes being seperate rather than coming in whole packages or Banjo's and Kazooie's faces changing based on the ammount of health they had made the Kazooie a little more detailed and creative. Also, Tooie trying to be like other games (for ex. the shooting areas, races with this stupid yellow bird which drove me mad) is a pretty dumb move since the game already had ALL the mechanics needed to create it's own unique experience without copying any other popular games from those years. Both of the games are great and Kazooie is the prettier and more nostalgic one however we all have to admit that Tooie is just larger and better in most of gameplay and writing aspects.
I think Terrydactyland is a bit empty. The reason is because it has to have wide open spaces with nothing in the way to accommodate the size of the daddy T-Rex transformation. The unfortunate consequence of this is that when you're not playing as the daddy T-rex (which is most of the time since it's only used for scaring a caveman with a roar and nabbing one Jinjo), you have to traverse this ground normally, which is a lot slower. It takes a lot longer to get from place to place than it feels that it should. Not to mention a lot of areas look very similar, and like in Yooka-Laylee fashion, that makes it easy to get lost if you aren't careful. A simple change in visuals for some of the other areas in the world would have gone a long way to mitigate this.
They could have done a tiny huge island Mario 64 thing and just make the world bigger by loading into a different map when coming out of Humbas But I'm not a coder.
I respect you're opinion and its a very interesting discussion. I much prefer Kazooie however, its worlds evoke much more charm and character. Tooie feels diluted in comparison. It does add some really cool ideas and improvements that you listed, that would be great if they were in the first one however for every good idea it has, it adds 1 or 2 more gimmicky and tedious ones that overall add to a bit of frustration playing the game overall. A lot of later Rare games ruined a great sense of harmonious balance both artistically and mechanically and 'Nintendo sense' refinement that there earlier games had, such as Kazooie, Diddy Kong and Goldeneye. It seems that when they got more free reign, they let their desire to show off and add as much as possible to games like Perfect Dark, Tooie and DK64 get the better of them. They had some great ideas and were incredibly talented still however, and would for sure take more of these over what we get by and large today
I think I can agree Tooie is the better game here, sure it’s got problems but it’s still overall a great expansion as any sequel should be. Kazooie is my favorite personally because well, it’s just so much chill and quicker to replay every once in awhile. I just found your channel and saw you compare similar titles to see what you think is better. Do you think you could do one for Mario Galaxy 1 and 2? I feel just like Kazooie and Tooie, the fanbase are similarly split as to which is the “better” game.
Throwing in my two cents cause i might as well. I feel TOOIE is the better game "Mechanically" while Kazooie is the better game from a "Gameplay/Game Feel". I can always pick up Kazooie at any point and it just feels so natural to play. While Tooie always has this awkward adjustment period of having to "relearn" all the button combos and what works where ETC.
I saw in a banjo tooie RUclips video final boss that kazooie aged better and tooie is more darker and faster than kazooie! Since im finally getting an authentic N64 banjo kazooie cartridge i hope to get yhe banjo tooie n64 authentic cartridge as well!
I played tooie last year after never getting a chance to play it and its an ok game but its no kazooie. It was cool they added more moves but most of them were pointless like the fire egg. Enemies respawning? Annoying. The worlds seemed like they had backtracking just to have it. The soccer minigame was fun and so was the ability to use mumbo jumbo even though he was essentially reduced to being used to flip a switch or open a door. Kazooie had the better supporting cast Better worlds Better music and better plot. Also why didnt mumbo just revive bottles if he was able to do it so easliy?
The eggs largely were pointless I’ll give you that. With the exception of clockwork Kazooie and a few brief uses of the fire and ice eggs. Backtracking is an essential piece to creating a cohesive interconnected world though not all the backtracking was executed well as in too many steps. It should have been simplified to two steps tops. I would really argue Tooie has a better supporting cast…it has just about everyone from Kazooie minus Tooty and Brentilda. We have characters like Bottles wife, Humba, King JINGALING and Gruntys other sisters. Also Better music is highly subjective. Jinjo Village is one of my favorite banjo tracks of all time and it’s from Tooie. Same with the plot. It’s pretty subjective which you like better. Good question about Mumbo reviving bottles
@@jiggylookback I don't remember any of the music from tooie I remember a lot from kazooie. I liked jamjars and humba wumba but again for the most part I didn't care about the supporting cast except for seeing the ones from the first game. I don't mind backtracking in games when it makes sense. I just don't like when games take the dk64 approach. Here's a new move, do two things and then Wait until 5 worlds later when you get another move to do two more things. I just feel like kazooie is still the better game. I appreciate what they tried to do but it was too much bloach with bad execution.
Personally my biggest issue with Tooie (and I really can't believe you hardly touched on this) is the mini games. You have to do kickball 6 times! 6! Times! And it isn't even that good the first time. Most of the mini games take too long and should really just end when you hit the target score instead of going for a time limit approach to get a high score. I never ever replayed a mini game to improve my score cuz there was never a point except the flying saucer which gave you a Cheato page. My final thought on why Kazooie is superior: Canary Mary.
You clearly didn’t have a controller with Turbo mode. I beat Canary Mary as a kid by just holding the two buttons on turbo mode and then just loosely aiming with the joystick. Good times.
Every criticism I see about tooie is a reason I liked tooie better. The interconnected worlds ("backtracking"), minigames, and level design were things that I enjoyed about tooie.
I prefer Kazooie. While Tooie is an amazing sequel I just found Kazooie to be more enjoyable. Possibly due to the lack of required back tracking. I just wish Kazooie had a replay feature like Tooie did.
Despite the usage of Fart sounds, this video was simply marvelous! It's nice to see a creator dedicate most of their beginning catalog on Rare's old games. Every title they made back in the mid to late 90s were simply perfection. I talked about DK and Banjo on my channel before, and I can't stress how much I love those series. Tooie has always been my favorite Banjo game, and I made that abundantly clear in my old Banjo video. But I think your video did a better job of explaining why I feel the game is just better than its predecessor. Keep up the amazing content man, you've just earned a new Sub. Oh, and ring me up for that inevitable video over Donkey Kong Country ;)🤙
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I love Banjo (obv) and classic Rare! I grew up with it and so making videos on it just feels natural! They deserve to be loved! May have to when it comes to country! I’ll get there eventually haha!
T Rex? Dragon Kazooie? The submarine? All those are bangers. And they provide more uses besides Kazooie’s limited get small and go through this hole which is what every transformation did minus the Bee. At least the gator could attack.
Man, now I want to play Tooie more. And yeah, one of the first things I noticed when I first saw Tooie gameplay was the graphical update. Which isn’t all that cool, but the fact that it was in hardware like that just made it even more impressive.
I replayed Tooie somewhat recently. It gets huge minus points due to the amount of lengthy cutscenes in it that waste your time. In Kazooie, you find a puzzle on the wall, press z, a jingle plays and a very brief cutscene of the world door opening plays. In Tooie, not only do you have to play the puzzle minigame each time, but you then have to watch a 20 second cutscene of jiggywiggy making his floor shiny, watching the camera get to the world door, hitting it with the magic beam, and then the door opening. Tooie is full of stuff like this. Being able to play as Mumbo is a bad thing imo. He is slow and can't do any moves besides a basic attach and activate the mumbo pads. You don't ever want to play as him and just painfully do it whenever you find another mumbo pad you need to activate. I think the decision to make the notes all groups of 5 was a bad one. In kazooie, they served as a guide to make sure the player explored every important corner of the level. Tooie doesn't have anything like that, and it really could have benefitted from it. I still like the game, but i don't think I'll be replaying it ever again. Especially with its overly long intro cutscene.
Fair critiques. For my I enjoyed the jiggywiggy cut scenes they were epic but I agree when I was editing my last video I had so many dialogue scenes in Tooie I felt like it was all I was editing at points. And notes I agree with. But since Tooie is more of an adventure then a collectathon it does make sense. Mumbo I love tho. They should have expanded his moveset tho!
Just some feedback for the future… I see a lot of smaller RUclipsrs kind of try TOO hard with editing. All of your editing sounds and images flying in non stop are pretty annoying and distracting. You don’t need to make a sound effect every time you show a picture and you don’t need to show words or pictures that just reflect the words you are saying. Just show game play for the thing you’re talking about. It’s way too hard to keep watching the video with all these bells and woosh sounds every 2 seconds, they don’t add anything to the video.
@@DOC_951 don’t worry I don’t do that anymore. This video is pretty old at this point. I highly suggest you check out some of my new content like the Mysteries of Banjo Tooie for example. I’ve grown and come a long way since this one.
The notable N64 3D platformers from best to worst 1. Banjo-Tooie 2. DK64 3. Mario 64 4. Banjo-Kazooie 5. Glover I have to put BK that low because the note system is that bad. If you don't have that awful note system holding it back, it would easily jump above Mario 64. BT isn't perfect, but it's fun and captivating to explore the worlds and solve the puzzles and it's extremely polished and ambitious and kind of acted as a foundation for the modern open world game. The moves are more underwhelming with some just being upgrades of other moves, but that's not a "bad" or "negative" thing; it's just a missed opportunity to have more meaningful moves to add. The game is not harmed by slapping new paint on old moves, it just doesn't gain extra points for it. People who think Banjo-Kazooie is better just don't like exploration/adventure focused games (and probably played the BK remaster).
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Your list was super dope with Glover at 5. It definitely is super unique and I forget about it. I’ll reacquire it and have to analyze that one on my channel :)
@@jiggylookback From what I remember Glover had the same kind of problem with it's garbs(?) as BK, but kinda worse. At least it has a level select password, so you can get around the tedious garb gating. Glover 2 looked like it was going to be great before it got cancelled though.
While it’s undeniable that Kazooie is a more balanced game there is so much in Tooie that is an improvement on Kazooie that it warrants it being better. The gameplay and controls being one of the bigger ones. Everything feels so much more refined in Tooie. The expanded moveset is great. Little things like how the roll feels. The transformations are better for sure. The expanded universe of characters and such. In the end it’s an opinion on both counts. But I think Tooie shines more than people give it credit for. It’s a sequel that did so much right.
@@jiggylookback It's exactly because gameplay and control and even ambiance and everything counts that, again, EVEN THE CREATORS admit that they messed up on Tooie. This is not a matter of opinion. Its an objective fact. A fact stated by THE CREATORS OF THE GAME.
@@ianesgrecia8568 making it large and them disliking that still is not a fact…because someone tells me they don’t like apples doesn’t make it a fact that everyone hates apples… I still like the large scope world and collectibles. I also like DK 64 😎
@@jiggylookback You can like whatever you want, that is not the issue, The issue is that is an objective FACT that Kazooie is a better game. Again, by the mouth of the creators themselves. You can prefer red over blue or apples over pears. It doesn't make the sky less blue or the pear trees suddenly grow apples. There IS a concrete factual level of game constructions. Liking a less optimal game like Tooie over Kazooie does not make it better. Just like there are some that think that DK 64 is the best game ever. Edit: In case it's STILL not clear, DK 64 is ALSO considered a very bad constructed game.
@@ianesgrecia8568 the whole this game is better because the creators said so is like the weakest argument respectfully. And it’s totally their opinion and your opinion is it’s a fact because it’s their opinion which doesn’t mean anything. I made an entire video of points why I think Tooie is better and those stack up over the original. I also made an entire level tierlist for both games. I’m not saying you can’t think otherwise, but I feel like you’re not making a point and just telling me I’m wrong. What is the game construction that is objectively better? And btw I know tons of people who think Tooie is better which helps in proving that it’s subjective.
Do you agree with me? Which game is your favorite?
I don't even need to see it to know this place'll be a battlefield
@@JimmyJangy HECK YEAH 😂
This reminds me of creating a realistic game that has different worlds from easy to almost impossible for 1 whole year to be rewarded for life if still alive
Banjo Kazooie 🎉 honestly this debate is tearing me apart.. I choose both 😂
I played them both in 1998 and 2000 or 2001. But Tooie is by far my favorite. Tooie has a less predictable world. And feels more mature.
I did as well :) I agree with you!
tooie is so much better than kazooie that it's unreal
😎😎
Tooie is one of the greatest games ever and it doesn’t get enough love
It doesn’t! It’s one I try to give a lot of love on my channel!
Tooie is too much for me, Kazooie feels like everything fits perfectly.
Agreed. 100%.
But also that’s my opinion :)
Same with my defending Tooie video :)
Thanks for watching and engaging in discussion!
Tooie is my all time favorite game ever made, and I don’t think it’ll ever change.
It is a fantastic game!
Kazooie is the better video game, Tooie is the better experience and is my favorite
Interesting. I can see that point. A lot of people online prefer Kazooie for sure! The majority I'd say!
Completely agree, none of Tooies worlds feel empty. This was always a valid complaint about nuts and bolts but for some reason people have started saying it about Tooie.
Illusory Truth effect! I’m telling you!
It looks like time constraints caused them to be empty, I’m guess if they had more time they would have filled up those worlds.
I think they're both 10/10 games for different reasons
100%
Can’t cap.. both games are actually hard without looking at videos on RUclips for answers.
@@blaccgetsuga8714 whaat really? I don’t think so, but at least you have resources to assist if you think so!
You can love both 😎
the reason i like Kazooie better is mainly because the levels being so big that there is alot of negative space where you are moving around in non-interesting ways. like just walking. the one thing i legitimately hate about Tooie, is they made the worlds so much bigger, but the notes were simplified to packs of 5. it just made exploring every nook and cranny less satisfying. and Kazooie is just a more lean game. it is kind of like the games Grow Home and Grow Up.
@@Dukelol323 yes I agree!
@@Dukelol323 or like ocarina of time vs twilight princsss
kazooie was lovely but casual tooie felt like the first aproach of many players to an interconected giant open world filled with puzzless, just as good if not better music, top visuals for the generation and more mature theme without being as explicit as conker. there's a reason tooie is my favorita n64 and RARE game ever released.
Same! You have great taste!
#teambanjotooie I understand why people prefer the clarity of Kazooie and I love both. Tooie is just a bold and crazy ride.
They it is
I love both these games so much, it's tough to pick a favorite. My only actual gripe with Tooie is, I don't like that they clump the notes together in nests. I want to collect them individually, I think it would fill out the worlds more, plus I like the challenge.
As long as they keep track of the note score and don’t reset when you leave the level I’m good with that 🙂
If they ever did a Banjo Kazooi3, I think they should give every World two Acts; one where they're small & self-contained, and another that unlocks halfway through the game that make the worlds more expansive and start connecting them Tooie style.
@@torchilicho yes it really is!! They nailed it! Feels so much better then other platformers on the console

The notes not respawning is enough to make Tooie better
I never recognized that Tooie allowed you to switch directions while rolling around.
There are two thung Tooie lacks: Click Clock Wood and Freezy Peak.
Those were the two absolute highlights including their tracks.
I loved how Tooie connected the worlds but having the four seasons in one level and the seasons affecting each other was so cool too and I loved how the music changed from one season to another.
Especially Freezy Peak gives me a festive feeling which i do not get in the winter levels in Tooie.
I do love those levels as well for sure! Would have been dope to have a seasons change level in Tooie!
I played both games as a kid and I remember preferring Banjo Tooie more.
Heck yeah!
Banjo kazooie had great charm, tooie brought nothing but harm!
That’s a sad rhyme. Tooie was a great time
Awesome video! I just prefer the simplicity of Kazooie, but I love the perfect continuity and progression that Tooie brought to the table.
That’s fair!! It’s hard to knock Kazooie other then the note score thing honestly!
I still think both games are great for what they do
Juat found your content and after watching a couple videos im hooked. Thanks for all the hard work you put into them!
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you’re enjoying it!!
I like Tooie a bit more. It has a bigger, more interesting cast of characters, such as Jamjars, Humba Wumba, and many more. And I also like the level themes, because they used some, that were not overused in other games, like an amusing park or an ancient Maya world.
Yeah I agree 100%
While I personally don't agree that Tooie is the best of the two (for me personally, it's BK1>N&B>BK2, but they're all great!), I am very glad I found your channel and have been enjoying your content and your interactions with people (including myself). From one Rareware fan to another, thank you for what you do and you have earned yourself another sub :)
Thanks so much! Wow it’s wild I don’t think I’ve seen that order of Bk games before. I respect it though.
Great video, you explained the differences very well
Yep at the end of the day it’s your own preference! But you gotta love both for what they did both incredible games!
Yes exactly! I also love Metroid. When people describe Tooie as a MetroidVania in 3d I get excited lol
Tooie is infinitely better and knowing the made it fit in an N64 cart is crazy! No dlc available but we got replay cheats multiplayer and more
I really loved both games for their own reasons, but the biggest (and probably silliest) reason I liked Tooie more was because Banjo's roll attack was SIGNIFICANTLY improved upon in Tooie. Where in Kazooie you stop after you complete the roll, Tooie you can continue running and even change direction with the roll. It just made the game feel better for me.
Yes! The gameplay fluidity like I said! That roll makes a huge difference in general! Agree 100%
I really appreciate that your channel footage is captured from the original hardware. That shows the love for the original console ❤️
I believe in playing the game as intended with the original console and controllers is crucial to really capture what the developers were going for. The “magic” if you will! It’s important to me. No hate for other ways to play just my personal preference!
@@jiggylookback I could not agree more 👏👏
I always thought tooie was just the better game.
In a small way I want a new Banjo game however perhaps the games were as perfect as they could be for that time period and the magic just could never be replicated in the modern day. I guess what I am saying is that my appreciation here is that you are just loving the games as they were and not letting the games die in our memories.
Can’t let them die! I think there is still room for a new entry that can recapture the magic! Just gotta believe!!

@Scrubber89 power eggs even though it is cool
Ok, a big world is better but also still proffer all in 1 instead of back tracking
PS. For all the flack Claw Swipe got (which to be fair, there were very valid issues with the move), I still enjoyed the move and used it whenever I saw an opportunity XD
6:14 Actually that's the only time you ever actually have to backtrack in Kazooie and that's only if you are going for 100%. I like Tooie over Kazooie, but that's one aspect that Kazooie has Tooie beat.
I love Banjo Kazooie more than Tooie, but they’re both amazing games.
I will say I havent replayed Tooie as an adult so its overdue for another go
Awesome video 👍🏻
Thanks! I put a ton of work into this one!
Yeah I can see that! Fair!
Do you think I should play dk64 before tooie or both are different enough?
They’re different enough, honestly though I’d probably play Tooie first! 64 is a commitment to collectibles.
for me, backtracking is really satisfying and adds so much life into every world, giving you the feeling like they are all connected together.
Exactly!
Ok I can support that change! I still enjoy the level :)
@@jiggylookback Yeah, me too.
They could have done a tiny huge island Mario 64 thing and just make the world bigger by loading into a different map when coming out of Humbas
But I'm not a coder.
To each their own! There are good points you’re bringing up!
I want kazooie levels with tooies engine
That would be sick!

Yes I will get to those at some point! I def need more Mario content but I’ll get to it! Thanks for watching!
Interesting I don’t have that issue, but it does have an expanded moveset so I see your point. Kazooie is simpler for sure!
Agreed! 🙂
A Fellow believer!!!
I saw in a banjo tooie RUclips video final boss that kazooie aged better and tooie is more darker and faster than kazooie!
Since im finally getting an authentic N64 banjo kazooie cartridge i hope to get yhe banjo tooie n64 authentic cartridge as well!
Definitely! Great to have the original carts!
@@jiggylookback yes I feel much better happy for any classic games to be authentic!
Kazooie had the better supporting cast
Better worlds
Better music and better plot.
@@angelganon8213 it really just depends what you’re looking for.
I like DK64 so makes sense.
I do cover the mini games in other videos. But in my personal experience I don’t think it really detracts that much from the game.
Kazooie definitely has more replayability
I liked the original banjo game more. I tried to like the sequel but it has too many changes.
I like both games and also yooka laylee🤔
At some point I’m going to do some Yooka videos :)

T Rex?

The submarine?
All those are bangers. And they provide more uses besides Kazooie’s limited get small and go through this hole which is what every transformation did minus the Bee. At least the gator could attack.
Man, now I want to play Tooie more. And yeah, one of the first things I noticed when I first saw Tooie gameplay was the graphical update. Which isn’t all that cool, but the fact that it was in hardware like that just made it even more impressive.
Right!!! Totally! It’s Wild how much they got away with on the 64 hardware! Rare really utilized everything they could!

Bk was too easy. BT was perfect
Agree
Word!
Both are great, but Tooie is better by a hairsbreadth.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 yes!
YES people are just Dumb!
Kazooie is the winner 🏆
A lot of people would agree with you
Just some feedback for the future… I see a lot of smaller RUclipsrs kind of try TOO hard with editing.

The notable N64 3D platformers from best to worst
1. Banjo-Tooie
2. DK64
3. Mario 64
4. Banjo-Kazooie
5. Glover
I have to put BK that low because the note system is that bad.
@@AdamTheGameBoy ahh canceled sequels. I hate that with a passion.
Just one phrase:
Bigger is not better.
Even the developers accepted that Tooie failed in the balance of mechanics that Kazooie hit the sweet spot
