@@kathybrem880 your trolling is level 1, practice more, get better. the show is heavily queer coded. ask the writers whether it’s a love story, they’ll tell you yes
I love how a guy and girl can make eye contact for 0.5 seconds and everyone is planning a wedding, but if you want to prove two people are LGBT you need a powerpoint presentation, a proofread thesis with citations, and quotes from the writers printed in blood on the eve of the winter solstice. And even then there'll be some dumbass like "no u guys they're just friends!!! why can't people just be friends!!!!"
Then there are people who argue that “you guys don’t allow guys to just be friends stop over-sexualising everything” but like it happens with Hetero couples all the time
Not to mention all the scenes that were deleted that clearly showed more than friendship. When Arthur gifts Merlin his mother's sigil when he knows he's going to sacrifice his life to save Camelot. Arthur insists that Merlin takes it. The whole scene is also filmed in such a romantic light, both of them secluded away from the Knights, sitting near a fire, and speaking so softly during the entire scene. Another deleted scene that I love is from 5x02 when Arthur asks Merlin to return to Camelot and bring the royal seal to Gwen and Merlin says "I'm not going back, not without you!" It's also cannon that they were each other's clothes, Arthur kept the blue cloak Merlin gave him in 2x02. At Gwen's coronation, Merlin is also wearing Arthur's red jacket, the one we see in a deleted scene from 4x11 when we see that this jacket is Arthur's. Also, Arthur counting the days he doesn't see Merlin smile but he did not notice that Gwen was enchanted for weeks... I really don't get why some people believe Arthur doesn't care about Merlin as much as Merlin cares about Arthur. Arthur is definitely more emotionally repressed but he shows so many times that he cares about Merlin, one of the main exemples are "The Poisoned Chalice", "The moment of truth", "The Labyrinth of Gedreff", "The lady of the lake" (sitting on the floor, comforting Merlin and making him smile again), "A servant of two masters", there are more but these are the most obvious ones when you clearly see Arthur cares for Merlin. And even Mithian who just arrived in Camelot immediately picked up on how Arthur values Merlin's opinion above all others. As Merlin would say "A blind man could see it!"
10:44 when Merlin get's asked why he risks everything again and again for Arthur Merlin: *heavy gay breathing* And then she said "you know the answer but you're not telling me. Why?" Merlin: *heavy gay breathing intensifies*
merlin loves arthur in a “i love you so much that you don’t even have to be with me, i just want you to be happy” way, and i think that’s tragically beautiful
Gay or not, you can't deny they definitely have deeper relationship than Arthur and Gwen. They are destined to be together, romantically or not, they are two side of the same coins. And I really hope they can have a sequel even spin off with the modern day Merlin and his journey on finding Arthur. It will be a lot gayer.
I, personally, choose to interpret their relationship as romantic. I totally understand the intense platonic love viewpoint and I appreciate just how strong their bond is, but I think that if one of them was a woman then their relationship would almost certainly be seen as romantic. Most of the moments they share would *absolutely* be romantic in another situation
@Messalina I- what? Can you please explain how this is homophobic? Do you think I mean that if Merlin or Arthur was a woman then I'd see it as romantic, because that's not what I meant. I just meant that if one of them was a woman then the BBC would absolutely have them be in a relationship or imply it, but because they're men it's chalked up as a friendship or brotherhood despite their relationship clearly being of a different nature than that
Their relationship really has me torn between, “People can have close relationships with a lot of platonic flirting and touching and still just see each other as friends. Let’s not romanticize everything”, and “Hmmm, that wasn’t very platonic of you...” Either way, I _love_ their relationship. It’s a true bond and you can see they care and have love for each other, whatever kind of love it may be.
Hold up is NOBODY going to mention that one time Arthur thinks about a fantasy where he runs away with Merlin and they live a farm life together edit: thank you for the likes
@@EldritchLavendar he and Gwen were on a date and Arthur said that he sometimes dreamt of leaving Camelot and becoming a farmer, then he added that he'd take Merlin with him to do all the hard work
and to you that is gay? I suppose? Gosh, it is so sad how the gay community is gradually polluting people's hearts from recognising genuine and pure things anymore. I guess our kids can't grow up to know that true love between same-sex that is innocent of sexual feelings and gay exists anymore now can they?
i remember watching merlin as a kid (i was like 8 maybe, idk) and i was like 'hey these two seem to like each other' i shipped them even before i knew what shipping was
same when I watched it I was like 5 and eventhogh I thought Arthur and gwen were cute together I always had this thought that merlin liked and treated Arthur as someone who he loves
I think Arthur truly loved both Merlin and Gwen. Was in love with both of them, would die for both of them, and so on. Arthur’s a bisexual himbo who loves both his wife and his boyfriend.
Arthur: "sometimes I just wanna run away to a farm with Merlin" Gwen, his girlfriend, currently on a date with him: "haha and with me right?" Arthur: "..." Gwen: "... AND WITH ME RIGHT" Arthur: "..." Gwen: "nevermind, my mistake"
Folks of the same gender loving each other doesn't make them "gay." Are fathers who love their son, or brothers who love each other "gay?" Good grief truly the LGBT culture is vent on perpetuating chaos and pandemonium upon the world with their nonsensical rhetoric.
@@grunkersTTV Exactly! So shut up. They are not gay, just friends! And one would wonder why men don't feel comfortable being emotional to each other in public because they'll be hit with the gay rubbish.
I feel like it's painfully obvious that Arthur projects his love for Merlin onto Gwen, their "love" has all the same obstacles except for the added taboo of homosexuality. Also, the main thing that draws Arthur to Gwen is that she tells him the truth and is even rude to him sometimes, even though he's royalty. Of course, this is one of the defining aspects of his relationship with Merlin. It's just easier for him to pretend he loves Gwen, he can live out the fantasy of overcoming the class differences without being shunned for queerness or risking his friendship with Merlin if he doesn't feel the same. As I watched the show, this didn't even seem like a theory - it just seemed like exactly what was happening.
Ah yes a prince who goes on a life-threatening quest to save his servant, who knowingly drank poison for him and continuously whisper the prince's name in his sleep. *Clearly 100% heterosexual.*
@@asaleh34 Do you honestly see nothing romantic between them in the relationship? No single moment made you even doubt? Because in that case, I'd presume you didn't put your prescription glasses on...
I remember there was an interview with Bradley (Arthur's actor), where he said that they had planned for a blatant romantic relationship between him and Merlin, but BBC pussied out at the last second
I agree it would have been great but imagine the uproar if such an established legend had been tweeked to that degree? You only need look to "Alexander". It's a fairly well established theory that Alexander and Hephaestion were lovers, at least in adolescence. For certain they loved one another, and look at the uproar from that depiction.
They are real. Everyone knows that Isolde & Tristan in the series were true lovers. In her dying moment, Isolde asked Tristan to HOLD her. And Arthur said the same to Merlin at his dying moment("Just hold me"), and isn't that a desperate declaration of love?
and also the fact that the script was written by the same people, like if they felt that using that phrase was a good moment between lovers, and they also used it between Merlin and Arthur??? I mean come on people.
Colin Morgan the actor that plays Merlin has basically confirmed that Merlin is Bi in an interview saying that “if they ever give Merlin a lie interest that kill him ... or her off”
Ah, there is this one nice scene in (I think) S3EP2, or S2EP3, not sure... where Arthur storms into Gaius chambers in the morning and asks for Merlin, because Merlin didn't show up this particular morning. And Gaius answers: "He didn't come home last night. I thought he was with you, sire." Thank you Gaius, you made my day. :^)
I loved that scene! 😍 Seriously Merthur, and Sherlock/Watson are so much more than bromance, hell they are highlighted, underlined, and forged to be what they are, anyone who doesn't believe, has not paid any attention to what's going on in the show.
i think the one thing anybody who watches the show can agree on is merlin and arthur were in love. what kind of love is up to interpretation, but whether they were gay or not, its love in its purest form. that's what i've always thought anyway.
@@drinkbloodlikewine it's in an interview somewhere on the internet. The director also said that they thought of the last ep as a love story between Merlin and arthur and what they had for each other was pure love
A thought on the whole being held by your lover as you die thing: You could see the parallel to when Isolde dies. She and Tristan are in fact lovers and when she is dying, she says something to Tristan "hold me" (can't remember the exact quote). Then, when Arthur is dying, he says basically the same thing to Merlin. Make of that what you will.
Yes!! Also, the fact that Tristan and Isolde are a romantic couple that are almost as legendary as Romeo and Juliet...so what does that make Merthur? 🧐😏
Forget all the gay stuff, I just had my heart ripped out in half an hour. Relationship, be what it may, gay, straight, bi, whatever, was so strong it overpowered literally everything else. Every relationship. Every opportunity. Every boundary. Every moral code. I think people are far too focused on what TYPE of love they have. That is some pure fucking love dude, gay or not. That's a lot harder to find than a man attracted to another man.
@@JakeConrad666 for real it was immediately obvious to me, "oh, the discrimination against people with magic is a parallel to discrimintation against lgbt people" right away
When Arthur says I love her more than I can express he hesitates between her and more. Maybe he wanted to say more than anyone but realized he loved Merlin more. That’s Just a Theory A Gay TV Theory Thanks for reading.
The 'thank you' part is another example of the moment when everyone expects an 'I love you', just like in sherlock with 'sherlock is actually a girls' name'.
In my opinion, I believe Arthur has a different type of love for Merlin than Gwen. His love for Merlin runs much deeper than Gwen's, loving not just the person but everything Merlin has ever done for him. Of course, I ship it and would have loved to see a physical romance between them, but you get what you get. I just picture Arthur realizing he loves Merlin after he rises to lead Albion to peace.

[Arthur's] life is worth a hundred of mine," "Look what we've got.... You, me" "You did a good job back there," (parallel to Shang flirting/complimenting Mulan) ... That's gay, my dudes
yeah i bet if merlin was a girl practically everybody would have shipped her with Arthur rather than gwen and I bet Arthur would have fallen for merlin before he fell for gwen if merlin was a girl
Arthur's last words to Merlin: *whispers very softly you can miss it if you don't read Arthur's lips* I love *stops whispering extremely softly* Thank you
No like literally that scene where Merlin is choking on tears wanting to tell Arthur to lift the ban on sorcery and he just folds... I started tearing up. Legit heart wrenching decision.
I couldn't agree with you more. Seeing the pain, suffering and heartbreak in Merlin's face was marked with his tears. It's a moment that's always stayed with me throughout the remainder of this Merlin series and one I will never forget. It forged a lasting bond between them and from that point on, nothing could come between them.
When he says "it only takes a glance for a man and woman to fall in love" I got so mad because this is something I've been complaining about for YEARS. I hate underdeveloped love stories and how so many people just accept that these two characters who have no chemistry, history, or previous interaction suddenly fall for each other, meanwhile you have stories like this where we will be okay to fill in the gaps and pretend and imagine that they actually have feelings for each other and we settle for it because we know that's all were gonna get and people try to say that were ruining the show or that we're just trying to make everything gay. Ugh!
this is so true.what pissed me off about merlin is that the creators actually said the finale was about the love story between merlin and Arthur,so why not just make in canon physically too,a kiss at the end when Arthur is dying would have fit perfectly.in fact when you watch that scene,it just fills like something is missing?,and that something is a kiss.
@@shiningarmor8709 I think they just couldn't do it on camera, since it's a family show. People often forget that creators aren't completely free to show everything they want without permission from higher ups. I'm pretty sure they've tried, though. Julian even talked about the kiss and Arthur clearly said "I love you", but the audio was erased and changed to "thank you", which makes no sense, since Arthur said it to Merlin many times already. I also think he was actually going for the kiss, but died midway
@@lizapb I do get your point but this had the same timeslot as DR who, where the Doctor and Jack Harkness had kissed 7 years before this, I don't feel like it was a decision from the higher-ups.
It's been noted [and reportedly admitted by Bradley James] that Arthur actually lips the words "I love you.." before saying 'thank you' --- which he actually did say many times during the series. But for reasons we can only speculate [and how they did it] what was heard was the Thank You. This admission is the ONLY thing that could have been truly said at the point of Arthur's death...and it totally fits the whole presentation you've outlined in this vid. Excellent work....!
If you watch the scene closely you can see Arthur DOES actually say "I love you" but the BBC forced them to change it to "Thank you" because it was gay.
I never watched the show. But as an asexual aromantic, I can tell you that just because they don't kiss or have sex doesn't mean they aren't life partners or in love. I'll tell ya that much for free.
32:11 watch Arthur's lip movements carefully, he said "I Love You" before "Thank You" And this is confirmed by Bradley in episode commentary >.< So merthur is canon even though it's not explicitly
Y'all remember that point in time Arthur was like sometimes I just want to runaway and start my own farm bUt I mEan I would bring Merlin with me of course, saying all of this to his wife
When he shows the definition of manservant did no one notice how part of a manservants job is to provide intimate acts. I NOW DECLARE IT CANON wait lol I forgot it it already was
the ultimate proof that it's a love story between merlin and arthur is that they started to use the music they had used for gwen and arthurs kisses for emotional merthur scenes
As much as I would have loved seeing them become a couple, I think it's very wholesome for straight guys to see that you can care about another man that deeply without it necessarily making you gay. And that if your friend tells you he's gay (as that tearful "coming out" scene was surely alluding to), it shouldn't change your friendship with him.
@@aidajensen1431 it’s exactly why, this happens with pretty much every piece of entertainment. Like Captain America and Winter soldier for example. The majority of women particularly straight white women interpret it as gay all the time so if that’s the assumption we get, how can you be shocked when in real life people act accordingly. Reading this comment section I’ve seen people talk about constant sexual chemistry which is something neither i or my friends never got from it so when any sort of bonding moment between men is interpreted as sexual, it’s no surprise men then avoid bonding moments in real life.
@SDPRZ There are a lot of reasons for the way slash shipping happens but I'll just point out one: it's not surprising the people see romance in their relationship - after all I think we can all agree that if one of them had been female a relationship would have been a given (even if it was one of those slow burn take forever for them to get together things), we are expected to accept het relationships on far less ground than this, there are trope moments that fit perfectly with the het romance expectations and would be enough to establish a relationship if there was even one of them in a movie. Merlin has many. I'm not necessarily trying to disagree with your point that it can make it harder to have softer male relationships but I see far too many people shaming women for just applying the same standards of fetization and romantic trope that they have been taught their entire lives to non-het relationships. (Though again, this is a super complicated issue that gets into politics, power dynamics, industry dynamics, representation, queer baiting, and historical sexism in romantic expectations, amongst many other things so keep perspective in mind.)
@Keys andFood "hurting their marriage profusely" goes a bit far. I'm a Merthur shipper, but I don't think that necessarily invalidates Gwen & Arthur's relationship. Gwen & Arthur r great for each other, but Merthur just fits that sappy "written in the stars" trope so well (hello 'two sides of the same coin'). Gwen & Arthur are happy, but also: Gwen is going to die permanently while neither Arthur or Merlin will. Merlin and Arthur are both essentially immortal and a romance feels incredibly plausible, if not an inevitable conclusion of their relationship. Gwen and Arthur aren't written in the stars, but that doesn't make their love story invalid. To put it crudely: how can u compete with prophetically ordained semi-immortal soulmates?
@Keys andFood Of course love is free and a choice: Gwen and Arthur prove that time and time again. But Merlin and Arthur are canonically soulmates, and their love (platonic or however u want to interpret it) for each other is undeniable. Whether its forced or not, if they love each other all the same, does it really matter whether they were pushed together by fate or not? I didn't take any insult from ur comment, and I get ur frustration. I feel like a lot of Merthur shippers rlly have it out for Arthur nd Gwen's relationship and Gwen in general, which is stupid. Denying Gwen and Arthur's love for each other is childish and petty. I don't know why they view it as so implausible that Arthur could possibly love more than one person in a romantic manner when there's literally an entire episode devoted to Gwen solving that exact issue. It's like they think you can only love one person at a time or something lol
It's not that they're so devoted to each other, because I agree that can still be platonic, it's the way the look at each other. There is a moment in the finale where I honestly thought they were about to kiss. I don't know if it was asked of them or if it just came naturally, but the way the actors played Merlin and Arthur together when they were having quiet and intimate moments was too intense for me to see it as platonic.
I don't know if anyone has said before, but I'm surprised that you didn't mention the episode where a witch cursed all the men to fall in love with her but not Merlin, and she asked him why he wasn't under her spell. This is the best episode where you can say magic is equal to homosexuality. Hope the Sterek video go up again!!!

I'm so late to this, but the reason I love Merlin and Arthur's relationship so much is because that is LOVE LOVE. No matter what you believe their relationship to be, platonic or romantic, fated or wrong place wrong time, enemies to lovers or not, the show gave us a story about a deep, enduring love between two men. Hahaha! You're not alone.
Not even a little-why don’t the gays get their own shows instead of thinking every normal show is gay
It's our job as the fans to create a full-front-no-flaw-Thesis presentation of 2 gay characters
Then there are people who argue that “you guys don’t allow guys to just be friends stop over-sexualising everything” but like it happens with Hetero couples all the time
LMAO I love you 😂😂😂😂
No, they're not gays, but they truly loved each other. Why make it anything else?
I want this entire paragraph neatly written in old English script on cream paper and framed and hung on my wall
Another deleted scene that I love is from 5x02 when Arthur asks Merlin to return to Camelot and bring the royal seal to Gwen and Merlin says "I'm not going back, not without you!"
It's also cannon that they were each other's clothes, Arthur kept the blue cloak Merlin gave him in 2x02.
As Merlin would say "A blind man could see it!"

merlin loves arthur in a “i love you so much that you don’t even have to be with me, i just want you to be happy” way, and i think that’s tragically beautiful
God I really want to be rich enough to make this.

@@gungunx9064 MOOD I WANT THIS SO BAD
I, personally, choose to interpret their relationship as romantic. I totally understand the intense platonic love viewpoint and I appreciate just how strong their bond is, but I think that if one of them was a woman then their relationship would almost certainly be seen as romantic. Most of the moments they share would *absolutely* be romantic in another situation
@Messalina I- what? Can you please explain how this is homophobic? Do you think I mean that if Merlin or Arthur was a woman then I'd see it as romantic, because that's not what I meant. I just meant that if one of them was a woman then the BBC would absolutely have them be in a relationship or imply it, but because they're men it's chalked up as a friendship or brotherhood despite their relationship clearly being of a different nature than that
Messalina how is that homophobic...
Their relationship really has me torn between, “People can have close relationships with a lot of platonic flirting and touching and still just see each other as friends. Let’s not romanticize everything”, and “Hmmm, that wasn’t very platonic of you...”
Either way, I _love_ their relationship.
It’s a true bond and you can see they care and have love for each other, whatever kind of love it may be.

A thought on the whole being held by your lover as you die thing: You could see the parallel to when Isolde dies. She and Tristan are in fact lovers and when she is dying, she says something to Tristan "hold me" (can't remember the exact quote). Then, when Arthur is dying, he says basically the same thing to Merlin. Make of that what you will.
Isolde says "Hold me" exactly. Arthur: "Just hold me, please". It's the same, perhaps Arthur's version is most powerful and sweet

Hope the Sterek video go up again!!!
my favourite ships
what episode is that
the Lamia, s4e08. it was actually gwen who asked him why he wasn't under the spell, and the lamia knew about his magic all along, or something.
I remember this episode. I understand that Merlin is sorcerer so he is not influenced. But after Gwen ask I think “because he is gay” immediately 😂😂😂 Oh My God 😂
You don't even have to make this video. The reaction of Arthur when Merlin got frozen is evidence enough...
I still burst out laughing every 3 seconds every video of yours tho
Nina Blankestijn so true
SwirlyRainbowCowArt Either Darkest Hour our Deepest Sorrows
Is that part in this video? If it is, when?
just got back here after watching the hbomberguy video, and i wanted to say: thank you so much for making these videos. they helped me a lot years ago, when i was questioning a lot of stuff, and these were one of the things that helped me feel like i wasn’t losing my mind, seeing things that weren’t there. i’m so sorry that some dipshit would rip off all your hard work and try to pass it off as his own, thanks a million for making these and i love your newest stuff!
Music don't lie peeps, listen to the back ground music at 28:46 - 29:14 . Sound familiar? It better, this is the theme that comes on whenever something romantic is happening (AKA Gwen kissing every men there is in Camelot). So what is it trying to tell us here?
a. Merlin and Arthur are in love and haveing a moment
b. Merlin and Arthur are in love and haveing a moment
or
c. Merlin and Arthur are in love and haveing a moment
Always listen to the music peeps
YESS. I said that when i watched that ep 😂
THIS IS THE BEST COMMENT OH MY GOSH
d. All of the above
It's "having". Yep. I'm gonna be that person
I thought the saaame thing. The theme which was initially Arthur/Gwen's, now becomes Arthur/Merlin's. I mean. THAT'S PRETTY TELLING IS IT NOT?
Arthur: I think we'd probably get on
Creepy background music: let's get it on
That sentence and their expressions prove it for me beyond doubt.
Calling Marvin Gaye creepy background music made my day
🤣🤣 that just made my day
"Morgause, the town lesbian." This was so funny I couldn't stop laughing dhhdbd
I'm so late to this, but the reason I love Merlin and Arthur's relationship so much is because that is LOVE LOVE. No matter what you believe their relationship to be, platonic or romantic, fated or wrong place wrong time, enemies to lovers or not, the show gave us a story about a deep, enduring love between two men. It was like nothing I'd ever seen before onscreen when I first watched it, and it was - and remains to this day - really, really beautiful.
Yes! Only you are not late, we are still here ❤️
@@vaevictis1697 Ahh hi!! I'd only just finished watching the show when I made that comment, and was completely amazed to find out how active the fandom was shortly afterwards. We really are the once and future fandom!
But the creators did come out and say they originally did want to write them as a couple, but that they werent allowed to.
where?
Smiley Rain @-@ idk, i dont remember, but the content i was watching was talking about queerbaiting and shows that did want to make characters gay but couldnt. I'll try looking for it.
halfofakitty omg
thx
I'ma definitely need to see this lol talk about painful #myheart.. 😢
