Ya tbh when recording sometimes I get a bit in my head and mispronounce things or talk fast haha. Hopefully as I get more used to the mic mistakes like those happen less frequently. Thanks for watching!
man, this is one of those ocasions where youtube actually shows me something really cool! another interesting fact about the Cadians is that those born and raised on the planet, before its destruction anyways had a minor mutation that usually made the Cadians's eyes of a violet coloration, this was due to Cadia being close to the Eye of Terror can't wait to see more of these with the other IG regiments!
Really nice video, my favourite regiment would be the Death Korps of Krieg and the Vostroyan Firstborn I like the lore behind these two and I am a lover of history so yeah the boys from Krieg are just amazing plus I love Big Artillery
not to be that guy, but it is interesting to note that the cadians came out in 1995, two years before starship troopers and 6 years before halo CE, they looked slightly differnt than they do today however, I think it is still very clear that Cadians, USNC marines and the movie starshiptroopers took inspiration from the colonial marines and not from each other, its neat to see one concept explored in three wildly different ways
Yeah some others pointed that out, however the cadians that came out on 1995 had a different look, the current iteration or previous iteration if you think the knee pad cadians constitute a new one. The ones with the large pauldrons, flak chest piece, and distinct helmet came out around 2003 which would be after CE. I can definitely see the argument of the Cadians and UNSC marines both just being offshoots of the colonial marines though. The biggest thing that makes the UNSC marines look like cadians to me was the large pauldrons and helmet shape. However, I can definitely see those being the designers exaggerating the Colonial Marines design elements. I agree it is pretty cool to see how inspirational Aliens was. I definitely feel it’s one of the most important pieces of sci fi Thanks for watching!
Thank you! I’m glad my vids are digestible lol. One of my goals for the channel is to make fun light videos to be a stepping stone into more in depth lore

My absolute favorite regiment is the Catachan Jungle Fighters. But a close second is the Elysian Drop Troops. The Tanith First and Only are really cool too, really tragic backstory though
Ya those are all very cool regiments! I’d say catachan is a close second favorite of mine, and my third favorite constantly switches. Elysians are super cool, I’ve always loved the idea of drop troopers. My homebrew regiment specializes in drop assaults. Thanks for watching!
I would say the hostility of the planet Catachan is heavily inspired by the popular fictional world of Australia. Catachans are my favorite regiment. As someone who lives in a jungle-like country, I share familiar connections with these big burly men as I too participate in guerilla warfare with the voices in my head telling me government agents are outside my house👍 (Of course many of the things I said are jokes, except for the "Catachans being my favorite" part ✌️🤣)
Lmao, true! I’ve seen that zany place in videos, how do people think of such things. The mythical “platypus” and “kangaroos” are very creative🤣 Thanks for watching! I love the catachan they’re such a cool regiment
The Death Korps, Cadians, Steel legion, and Valhallans are my absolute fav with catachan being my go to when I want to make a Vietnam themed guard. Also good vid! You earned my sub!
Also on Cadian Shock troops. Also they have influence from 70’s Soviets and “WW3 European War scenario” (like Arx Gap being “Fulda Gap” place where enemies will make a large scale assault).
It's my goal to make at least a platoon out of every Guard range GW has made throughout 40k. The Steel Legion are my favorite, but I like them all and I can probably easily convince myself to turn them all into companies over platoons.
While I do disagree on the American influence on cadia (I believe that they are just sci fi guys with a Greek influence and Canadian naming because of how vast Cadia's fighting style is, which would result in not being tied to one specific country). I do have to say that this is a great video! I will be gladly waiting for part 2. Also fun fact, cadia could have also been named after arcadia! (A Greek mythological afterlife) and cadia was called arcadia back in the rogue trader days. Keep up the good work I have been really enjoying your videos :)
Fair, I just thought the shock troops moniker and combined arms tactics made the coincidence too strong to not touch on. But that can definitely just be almost any modern military. And yeah I was going to mention Arcadia, but didn’t quite know how to tie it in. I didn’t know Cadia was named Arcadia in RT though, thats very interesting! Thanks for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed the video
To be exact, most soldiers in WW1 used shovels or clubs, because the trenches were just too narrow to use effectively your bayonet. But, if you get out of the trench, the bayonet mounted on the rifle, gets its advnatage back, as its longer reach will allow you to kill your opponent before he can harm you ^^ So really, the only time a shovel is useful is close quarter in a trench, and of course building that trench XD
Aye let’s go, what regiment do you play? I need to start painting more of my gray guys lol, go so many guardsmen stuck in primer purgatory. Thanks for watching!
one thing i've noticed in this video is that KrakDuk is trying avoid calling the Krieg Germans even through the DKK are based on WW1 germany the army has a model on tabletop called a "Panzerwagen" this unit is basically an armored tractor with a mortar launcher.
I didn’t consciously try to avoid calling them German, maybe it came off that way. I definitely think Germans are a big influence, especially seeing some of the huge super weapons they employ. I’d say they take influences from most of the WW1 forces, with the French and Germans being the biggest ones. Might just be a consequence of the brevity I try to give my vids, oops. Thanks for watching!
Not sure if it's worth noting, but back when 40k was still envisioned as a tabletop CRPG called Rogue Trader, the intended main characters/posterboys of the setting were, well, the Rogue Traders. Sure, they're exceedingly rich with a lot of resources and are one rung down from the Emperor as far as the most powerful people in the Imperium go (the only people more powerful than them that aren't bound to a golden la-z-boy are the High Lords of Terra), but it is a little neat that from the very beginning, it was always about "normal" humans, not post-human half-demigods literally unable to make their own choices without extradimensional tampering. Those normal humans just so happened to be high-tier elites gallivanting around uncharted space with a harem of alien sex slaves and a piece of paper signed by God that says "I can do whatever I want"
Yes, I’m pretty sure we owe the term and concept of “deathworld” to HH’s novels, where every plant, animal, and fungus is evolved to be lethal due to extreme selection pressures.
Apparently the shovel thing in world war 1 was because bayonets often get stuck leaving you to either drop your rifle or be forced to slow down and pull it out ... which is bad when there are snipers and machine guns everywhere. Bonking them on the head with a shovel is just as incapacitating but much quicker. Does that tactic work on a a giant demon or big old ork. I dunno. But i can imagine a kriegsman being more then willing to find out
Personally, I have thing for the 1st edition Rogue Trader era generic Imperial Guard, at times refereed to as Imperial Army they were kinda like if you mashed together the Colonial Marines from Aliens, and the Rebel Alliance soldiers and Storm Troopers from Star Wars and they had actual cowboys as a cavalry
You can take any military culture and make your own guard homeworld. Only War was always most fun when you made up your own regiment using a points-buy system. We've had naval security units doing a haka, and dudes with shotguns and ballistic shields.
@@KrakDuk You should talk about the modern Stormtroopers (Tempestus Scions) and old school 40K Stormtroopers in a video! A lot of people don’t know that the Tempestus Scions are not the original Stormtroopers.
@@hagank1111 oh yeah good point. One of my planned videos is going to be on the various types of imperial storm troopers like Kasrkin, scions, grenediers, etc. The old storm troopers looked cool, both the OG beret ones and more spec op looking stormtroopers that came after
Some people are however missing some references in the Guard Regiments. Like in the case of Vostroya. Most of people is saying that they are supposed to be the space russians but that's untrue. The style of thier uniforms of beautifull patterns on thier armors. thier origins from the Vostroyan nobility and the elite cavalry unit that looks like the Winged Hussars points at them being not space russians, but space Poles from the times of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Catachans my favorite, as an American I feel like we deserve an imperial guard regiment that’s why I dislike some people saying they’re aussies when there are multi racial catachan fighters resembling the mixed race American army that came about during the civil rights movement during the Vietnam war, don’t see many black Aussies in the jungles of Vietnam in popular depictions of the war lol
Fun fact: The Germans were so interested in Canadian shock trooper tactics in WW1 that they came up with a specific term for it, the translation of which is 'stormtrooper'. They then attempted to use their own shock troopers, giving them body armour and calling them, you guessed it, stormtroopers. This is where the term stormtrooper comes from, and contrary to popular belief, is what stormtroopers are named after and partially inspired by in Star Wars (not the SS as has been so often stated), which makes sense since the stormtroopers wear armour and carry what are in real life SMGs, just as their German namesakes did. The other inspiration for Imperial stormtroopers is the American GIs. Stormtroopers, like the GIs in the Vietnam war, were never actually incompetent, nor were their defeats ever their fault, but rather down to the arrogance and overconfidence of those in power.
Yes! I actually read about that doing the research, very interesting. I also thought that the storm troopers came before the shock troopers. Thanks for sharing here, I didn’t have anywhere good to put in the video. Also thanks for watching!
Thats… what? None of that is right except for the last paragraph. German Sturmtroopen tactics weren’t based on Canadian infantry, but rather the writings of a French officer named Laffargue, even though neither the his homeland nor the British would adopt it. His writings were found and expanded upon by a German Officer named Willy Rohr, who created the first Sturmbatallion in 1915 and hence the first “Storm Troopers.” Though by mid 1916 these Strosstrupplers (the original name for Storm troopers) were wearing helmets, they didn’t wear body army. Metal Body armor was heavy and clunky, and was only worn by Machine Gunners and spotters, and even then only rarely. Strosstrupplers initially carried carbines, but they also carried pistols sometimes in addition and sometimes as a primary weapon, and handgrenades. Usually a *lot* of hand grenades, and sometimes *only* hand grenades and a knife. These troops were usually used as infiltrators rather than traditional shock troops, and when they had to fight in pitched battles they achieved great success but also suffered heavy casualties. The conflation with Canadians and their brutality, and the concept of a Storm Trooper is not from the war, but rather much much later. The idea that the word “storm trooper” ever referred to the Canadian army is entirely a-historical.
@@tk-6967 Strosstruppler did use the MP-18... in mid 1918 to the end of the war. For the other 3 years of their existence they used carbines, pistols, grenades, and knives. Sometimes other melee weapons and on even rarer occasions captured Entente weapons. As for the "stormtroopers" wearing body armor, those aren't strosstrupplers. They are spotters and machine gunners. You may be confusing them for the Italians, who did attempt to field shock troops with body armor, with mostly poor outcomes. Every major nation (except Russia I think) experimented with metal body armor. Only the German Machine gunners and Italians made any real use of them, and most nations abandoned their effort.
I work in forestry and I carry a massive bowie knife with a winged skull painted on the blade. I go shirtless whenever possible. Catachan jungle fighters badass
I like this it's an interesting analysis of the tropes each follow and I think it'd be quite accessible to those new to 40K and the guard. If you do another I'd like to see your take on the Mordian iron guard and the Tanith first and only
I’d like to see the more obscure regiments from the older editions. I saw one that was Revolutionary War inspired, along with the Severan Dominate and there obvious roman influences, and I know there’s a book about a regiment that was inspired by the Civil War fighting the Tau. But I haven’t read it yet.
Oh yes another commenter told me about them! It was quite interesting, I have been wanting to discuss more obscure aspects of the lore on the channel so I’ll add that to the list👍 thanks for the suggestion

What a coincidence that I started getting into 40k after watching aliens and starship troopers. I can now see how I got lead onto it. Great video, I'm having fun learning about 40k, and your videos are a part of that
Haha yep, I was a fan of all those things before getting into 40K as well. And to be fair aliens influenced a lot of franchises I love😂.
Glad you’re enjoying the videos! Welcome to the hobby
I really hope you make another video like this as I like to see the real life equivalents of the regiments
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I had a ton of fun researching this video, history has always been fascinating to me. I’ll probably make a part two with the Vostroyans and two other regiments some time in the future.
Thanks for watching!
Death Korp. Im like 99% sure it pronounced Korp(kore), like the marine corp(core)
Ya tbh when recording sometimes I get a bit in my head and mispronounce things or talk fast haha. Hopefully as I get more used to the mic mistakes like those happen less frequently.
Thanks for watching!
It's funny, I've always pronounced it "Korps", even though it's one letter away from "corps" in french which is pronounced "Kor" XD
Its corpse hence the K, its apart of the campy nature of 40k.
In german it is pronounced as you said. And Krieg ist german for war
@@lolroflroflcakesit’s the German word for corps, and pronounced identically.
Volume is perfect in this one
Oh great! Good to hear, I’ve been playing around with the settings a lot. Thanks for watching and providing feedback! It’s been very helpful
you forgot that the kriegers use the Lucius-pattern no.98, the "98" being a reference to Gewehr 98 and it's Karabiner variants
Oh wait that’s actually really interesting. I didn’t pick up on that, nice shoutout.
Thanks for watching and pointing this out!

No problem, man

Thank you sir🙏 guards the best faction fr fr
Tanith of course! I loved the books and also their sneaky style of warfare is awesome!
man, this is one of those ocasions where youtube actually shows me something really cool!
another interesting fact about the Cadians is that those born and raised on the planet, before its destruction anyways had a minor mutation that usually made the Cadians's eyes of a violet coloration, this was due to Cadia being close to the Eye of Terror
can't wait to see more of these with the other IG regiments!

that video was one of the best, if not the best in your channel
Thanks a lot! I’m glad you enjoyed it and happy to see that the videos are improving
Really nice video, my favourite regiment would be the Death Korps of Krieg and the Vostroyan Firstborn I like the lore behind these two and I am a lover of history so yeah the boys from Krieg are just amazing plus I love Big Artillery
Pho, Nguyen, banh mi is an INCREDIBLE joke I love it
I think this could make an intresting series, you should definetly make it into one
not to be that guy, but it is interesting to note that the cadians came out in 1995, two years before starship troopers and 6 years before halo CE,
they looked slightly differnt than they do today however, I think it is still very clear that Cadians, USNC marines and the movie starshiptroopers took inspiration from the colonial marines and not from each other, its neat to see one concept explored in three wildly different ways
I definitely feel it’s one of the most important pieces of sci fi
Thanks for watching!
Good stuff mate making it easier to understand then most
Thank you! I’m glad my vids are digestible lol. One of my goals for the channel is to make fun light videos to be a stepping stone into more in depth lore
Would definitely love a series of all these.
As a beginmer Vostroyan Firstborn simp, I'd love to see them get covered
(Covering the Maccabian Janissaries would be pretty awesome too, their mask design and overall aesthetic is baller)
Awesome! I’m glad you liked the video, I’ll definitely cover more regiments in the future! The guard are the best. I’ve drawn a few jannissaries I love their design
Thanks for watching
@@KrakDuk Oh hell yeah, I cant wait to see them
My fav regiment (and the one i based my army off) are the tannith 1st anf only.
Ooh yes the tanith are very interesting, I’ve been wanting to read Gaunts Ghosts.
I snuck one in very briefly near the end lol. Thanks for watching!
I would love to hear more about the Valhallans, as all I really know about them is what I pick up from reading and rereading Ciaphas Cain.
P.S. I love the fact you put some much time in to your subscribers and reply to there comments (I subscribed)
Ya I try to reply to as many comments as I can when I get time. Thanks a lot! I appreciate it
I would say the hostility of the planet Catachan is heavily inspired by the popular fictional world of Australia. Catachans are my favorite regiment. As someone who lives in a jungle-like country, I share familiar connections with these big burly men as I too participate in guerilla warfare with the voices in my head telling me government agents are outside my house👍
(Of course many of the things I said are jokes, except for the "Catachans being my favorite" part ✌️🤣)
Lmao, true! I’ve seen that zany place in videos, how do people think of such things. The mythical “platypus” and “kangaroos” are very creative🤣
Thanks for watching! I love the catachan they’re such a cool regiment
I have never been interested in Warhammer but this video was cool.
Would watch a series of these
Man get yourself a sponsor and make your channel more sustainable! I love your content!
The Death Korps, Cadians, Steel legion, and Valhallans are my absolute fav with catachan being my go to when I want to make a Vietnam themed guard. Also good vid! You earned my sub!
Damn really the Catachans are you go-to for a Vietnam-themed army? Where did you get that idea!!??
Love the video, can't wait to see Tallarn in the next video (my favourite Guard)!
This was so well edited and voiced. Well done, and thanks 👏
I always thought “Cadia stands” was the 40K version of “remember the Alamo”
2:48 oh no don't be sad krak
We want the first, the only: Tanith
Also on Cadian Shock troops.
Also they have influence from 70’s Soviets and “WW3 European War scenario” (like Arx Gap being “Fulda Gap” place where enemies will make a large scale assault).
for a second my youtube was broken, and you had the comment section of an Uncle Roger video XD
Lmaooo that’s wild. RUclips must think he’s the same as me cuz we’re both Asian😳
@@KrakDuk No worries. At least we can agree that cadia is a top tier regiment.
@@archietvernev2598 yesssir. Love my cadians
To be exact, most soldiers in WW1 used shovels or clubs, because the trenches were just too narrow to use effectively your bayonet. But, if you get out of the trench, the bayonet mounted on the rifle, gets its advnatage back, as its longer reach will allow you to kill your opponent before he can harm you ^^
So really, the only time a shovel is useful is close quarter in a trench, and of course building that trench XD
Just finished my Malcador Defender’s paintjob
Aye let’s go, what regiment do you play?
I need to start painting more of my gray guys lol, go so many guardsmen stuck in primer purgatory. Thanks for watching!
@@KrakDuk I play a custom regiment that I headswapped with bearskin caps, they’re painted like Praetorians but are dressed like Vostroyans.

one thing i've noticed in this video is that KrakDuk is trying avoid calling the Krieg Germans even through the DKK are based on WW1 germany the army has a model on tabletop called a "Panzerwagen" this unit is basically an armored tractor with a mortar launcher.
He literally mentioned how their helmets were based on the stahlhelm
Golden Banana and Blueberry boy here, but man this video puts hair on mine and my models chest.
Cadia also inspired by the Siege of Candia, the secound longest siege in history, 21 years.
Oh cool, I missed this one. Thanks for pointing it out👍
As a Canadian, I love the fact we get to be one of the best Imperial Guard regiments.
The Catachan takea heap from Harry Harrison's death world novels.
I dunno. But i can imagine a kriegsman being more then willing to find out
To be fair, every combat arms soldier I've met has a very dark sense of gallows humor. Comes with the job.
what a goated video, subscribed 🔥

Your Artwork is amazing, hope to see more from the guard!
Idk why but the image of the entire jungle holding up a single hand pointing a gun at a guy made me laugh more than it should have 😆
Personally, I have thing for the 1st edition Rogue Trader era generic Imperial Guard, at times refereed to as Imperial Army
they were kinda like if you mashed together the Colonial Marines from Aliens, and the Rebel Alliance soldiers and Storm Troopers from Star Wars
and they had actual cowboys as a cavalry

Some people are however missing some references in the Guard Regiments.
Like in the case of Vostroya. Most of people is saying that they are supposed to be the space russians but that's untrue.
The style of thier uniforms of beautifull patterns on thier armors. thier origins from the Vostroyan nobility and the elite cavalry unit that looks like the Winged Hussars points at them being not space russians, but space Poles from the times of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Kriegsmen live on the mindset that world war one was world war fun
Yeah sure but aside from memes about Shovel bomb rushing to death causing commissars mass hysteria and perhaps PTSD Kriegers aren't suicidal at all.
Well you Muricans already have the biggest piece of cake. The Cadians the poster boys of Guard).
@@KrakDuk 🫡
Thats… what? None of that is right except for the last paragraph.
German Sturmtroopen tactics weren’t based on Canadian infantry, but rather the writings of a French officer named Laffargue, even though neither the his homeland nor the British would adopt it. His writings were found and expanded upon by a German Officer named Willy Rohr, who created the first Sturmbatallion in 1915 and hence the first “Storm Troopers.”
Though by mid 1916 these Strosstrupplers (the original name for Storm troopers) were wearing helmets, they didn’t wear body army.
@wyatttyson7737 What about all the photos showing German stormtroopers wearing body armour?
And what about the MP18 submachine gun that they used?
For a second I thought Master Chief was dubbing this video. Here's a follow
Haha I wish. Thanks a lot! That’s huge praise
