    You forgot to mention the esteemed representative of the adeptus mechanicus who are attached to regiments in order to maintain their sacred machinery. Typically a company will have 1 engineer or lower ranking machine priest while the overall regiment will have a mechanicus contingent with several tech priests servitors and possibly even a magos.
    The priesthood of mars will take note of this transgression and may revoke their services to the adeptus invicta branch of the administratum.

    Cadian born white shields are always enlisted into the guard. Half of them stay on world, the other half are deployed across the stars. Kasrkin are also recruited from the youth army and trained extra hard from their teens, being used as the backbone of the defense of a Kasr and being rarely deployed outwardly.
    Cadian regiments may also be deployed as organic combined arms formations becoming FAR more complex. Commissars are also generally not attached on the platoon level. Especially not in cadian regiments.

  • @moffxanatos6376
    @moffxanatos6376 Месяц назад +158

    Even Cadian Regiments can vary wildly in size, Examples such as the 180th Infantry Regiment which numbers ~360 fighting men, including Commissars, Ogryns and Psykers (but not including the 83 preachers and 101 menials of the ministorum) to the legendary Cadian 8th, which numbers ~8,000 at full strength. Some Regiments are fewer than the Company size listed here, others are almost double the size of the Regiment in this video's example.
    And then there's the Krieg Regiments where even just their companies dwarf even the largest Regiments of other Guard worlds.

    • @Seshins
      @Seshins Месяц назад +7

      Yeah the way formations are described vary so wildly - in some instances a regiment is indeed made up of a few battalions, with supported attachments (and very few of the 40K writers get this right) where as I've seen regiments described at company, battalion, actual regiment, division and even corps size! But @leonardomarquesbellini suggest a fair way to get around it if it's based on founding size and the quirks of that particular planet. But you would assume some sort of consistency in formation size in such a large and experienced armed force.....

    • @moffxanatos6376
      @moffxanatos6376 Месяц назад +22

      @@Seshins 40k exists in a system of space feudalism where any sort of standardization between worlds much less sectors is an exercise in futility. Even if they had real time communications anywhere in the galaxy you'd need such an insanely huge bureaucracy that even the Adeptus Administratum would balk at.
      That communication is slow and unreliable and travel even worse, means that most of the Imperium is left to its own devices when it comes to the minutiae of governance and especially organization. As long as they pay their tithes and follow the Imperial creed, the Administratum doesn't really care what they do or how they do it. Combine that with millennia of cultural drift from old night or even just since the Horus Heresy, and you can have Imperial Guard "Regiments" that don't resemble any existing or prior military force in earth's history.
      On top of that many regiments are raised in response to a crisis and trained during the organization (and transit to the planet in question), going through the latter stages of boot camp on board the transport. As it often takes months or even years for the Imperium to respond to an attack that isn't on a major world and Veteran guard regiments are constantly on the move from deployment to deployment.

    I suspect that's what not mentioned here are a bunch of regular trucks and truckers for the logistics train. The overall campaign logistics will probably be handled by Munitorum personnel, but a regiment likely has the ability to truck around water, food, fuel, spare parts, ammunition and men over its own designated operational area. Unfortunately, lightly armored, non-combat vehicles isn't really anything GW ever focuses on, so we don't really know what they look like or how prevalent they are. It just... makes contextual sense for them to exist. Not everything can be carried in an APC, and not everything SHOULD be carried in one either, especially if there's a nice, paved road available where you can drive over 30-40 km/h, lol.

    One thing to consider is that the Imperial Guard regiment is a force designed for space lift. The logistics tail is presumably going to be supplied by the Navy or the local government when they arrive in-theater. Transporting regiments to their theater of operations isn't fast or cheap. So IG regiments would be heavier on combat power and lighter on support than their PDF cousins.

      not what you'd expect from Million world's empire's regiments, each of which would be suitable to take control over failing planet. • @maddlarkin
      @maddlarkin Месяц назад +11

      @@dimas3829 GW really needs to expand the idea of the IG raising multiple regiments from a planet per founding to make up that 10%. The Cain novels touch on the idea but it's never really outlined definitively (the Taniths 3 regiments seem to be an exception as its a first founding), so you end up with most regiments capping out around the 10K mark max and then werid execpetions like the Grundite 50th who were 500,000 strong or the Kreig Seige regiments from Vraks where each company was approaching a normal regiments size.
      Bigger issue at the moment is how much the Imperial Navy ship crews have balloned, so you could have a ship with a crew of 80,000 transporting a Guard regiment of 2,000...

      @@dimas3829 That wouldn't be a regiment, that's not how military organization works. what you're talking about is a Unified Combatant Command.
      Regiments being in the single digit thousands is fine, it's what a regiment is after all. They are organized at that scale for a reason. Though 4000+ without any battalion subdivisions would probably make it unwieldy. (always strange how the Guard go straight from company to regiment with nothing in between.)
      Real militaries go from Fire Team to Squad (or Group to Section in the UK I think.) to Platoon, to Company, to Battalion, to Regiment, to Brigade, to Division, to Corps, to Field Army, to Army Group, to Combatant Command or equivalent.
      That being said, realistically Imperial Guard units should probably indeed be organized for planetary campaigns by UCC or Corps level at minimum, rather than by Regiment.

Considering absolute majority of human enemies are larger than us, more armored and Imperial guard is usually heavily mechanized, self-sufficient (meaning division between active combatants and logistics being at least approximately 1:1, i.e. fire-teams of 5, squads of 50, etc.) and extremely high casualties - those numbers would do.
      Realistically, they in their time absolutely should be organized as regional theater in our time, since our one single planetary armies were divided into several of such during the most devastating wars. Regiment of Imperial guard serves the same role as Wermacht did - conquer the planet and they failed at 18,2 milllion man army, while total Allies and Axis forces numbered 127,2 millions (and those numbers were sustainable by our tech, which is significantly less developed that Empire's one, with corpse-starch and shiet). Considering that only one of 10 Planetary Defence Forces recruits gets to become Imperial Guardsmen, the 10 Million Guardsmen per 100 million regular planetary troops seems legit. Call me a traditionalist but I believe trucks are superior to chimeras, for performing the role of supply chain behind the front lines, as they do not eat into their own supply as much, and they are easier to maintain and drive than tracked vehicles.

      @@KalashVodka175 Armoured vehicles are heavy, and tracks create drag which means they burn more fuel, even if you have a super energy dense fuel, that is weight in supplies you can carry. On roads vehicles with tires are much more efficient and are easier to maintain. It's better if your supply vehicles are weighed down with supplies rather than with armour, which is redundant on a vehicle that is operating behind the lines. The Chimeras can of course help distribute supplies to forward positions, like armoured carriers have always been used for.
      Of course you also have specialised carriers, the DKO Kreig for instance may find tracked carriers more suitable to carry supplies over muddy roads(although with their penchant for lengthly battles of attrition I imagine they would be more 'light gauge rail guys' with the amount of shells and soldiers they go through) and Valhallans might certainly use tracked carriers similar to snowcats for operating in deep snow. As tracked carriers, or wheeled ones might prove completely inadequate.

      @@rileyernst9086 Rules wise it's referred to as a "Drum-fed Autogun" It's just that this pattern used is more on the nose with the resemblance to a Thompson (albeit noticeably larger relative to the soldier). While the Agrippina/Vraks and Graia/Columnus pattern Autogun's resemblance to the FAL and AK respectively are more vague.

    I like your regimental struture. At the size of a full modern brigade, the unit is absurdly large by modern standards. But it is still realistic, unlike the "regiments" of some sources, which have 10.000-20.000 troops under colonel.

      @Nerdy4Life Месяц назад +1

      Some Siege Regiments are well over 100K strong, but this depends on their role and the circumstances of their founding. In the IoM, a "Regiment" isn't a fixed unit size but rather an organisational structure within the Astra Militarum. Larger regiments (10k+ troops) aren't really unrealistic; it's just that the definition of a regiment in 40k differs from what we typically see in contemporary military forces. Within the context of Galaxy spanning military bigger unit sizes probably make more sense, especially since the Guard normally rely on mass to achieve victory.

A single chimera per platoon seems rather pointless if everyone else is just on foot. I suspect there ought to be cars or trucks assigned to every squad and every command squad should have a jeep like vehicle. I also think there could be a string of much more junior officers in training serving under the command staffs of every command staff.

    The only small notes I can add (to an otherwise excellent video) is that it feels unlikely that any unit would have a company level medical unit. That's more a battalion level thing? And in a world without Battalions or Divisions (damn you 40k writers) the Regiment would likely have a separate Medical Platoon/Company under its own medical officer.
    ALSO, as someone else pointed out, there's no technical staff mentioned! The Omnissiah is deeply displeased. Priests and scribes are taken into account, but not the armourers, communications specialists, etc? All of those Chimeras and Sentinels need maintenance. There would most likely be a Maintenance and Material Platoon/Company, along with a Communications Platoon/Company.
    But, truly, its obvious this video is made with love. As someone who has spent HOURS in my own time crunching the numbers and doing the hard maths (down to how many laspistols vs lasguns a squad of Guardsmen would be carrying) this was great.

    There are also some representational things. Small things which I noticed. I believe that I saw 9 Ogryns, but in the table there are 10. Likewise, presentation of heavy weapon squads was unrealistic. They work in teams of two or three. However, only heavy bolter team was somewhat realistic. However, who is carrying rocket squad ammunition? Why mortar guy has to manage entire mortar by itself while spotter sits and looks at pretty sights all day long? Small things like that are not well refined.
    And I was kinda amiss why regiment has loose Chimeras around. It is not like they can fill up squads more than they already have. If they need armored punch, they need more heavily armored vehicle. Maybe Lemon Russ tanks instead? Sure, it can't be an armored regiment, but Imperium makes exceptions for combat performance and small, practical cases are routinely overlooked. Likewise, command squad of company was kinda light on chimeras and heavy on medics. This is where those transports should had went.
    Also, there are kinda too few conscripts considering that Cadians are using them to replenish ranks of regiments as they get their right of passage.

A regiment that has little in the way of staff to ensure the troops are paid, get their issued equipment, and maintain vehicles (if any) and weapons. Collect and organize battlefield intelligence. Ensure comm lines are set between regimental units at least. And so on. If everyone in a regiment is for combat then there's no one to handle internal regimental logistics and thus quickly degrades the regiment's combat capabilities. One thing of note is that Cadians are one of a select few who are allowed combined arms regiments. Cadian shock troops deployed off world (ESPECIALLY in more recent lore) often are combined arms groups, or are more mechanized than others due to the fact that Cadia can (or could) produce the equipment required for it. You notice a lot of exceptions to the whole “one specialty” rule are dedicated to one thing. War. And produce literally hundreds of these regiments. So it’s not a big deal if one or two regiments fall to Chaos here because there are usually two on either side who will have no problem smacking a heretic upside the head with their own tanks and artillery. Cadians are also very commonly assisted by direct support from the Imperial Navy, with what could be described as JTACs attached at Company levels which adds a whole other headache to deal with when describing a “standard” Cadian regiment. (Not including our favorite Techpriest Enginseers who help run every vehicle and weapon in the regiment.)
