I'm curious is there a reason you use hand tools only or is it just aesthetic. not gonna lie, I like the smoothness of, the low intensity. Also, they say you can cut soft metals, brass, bronze, and aluminum with woodworker's power tools, so a card scraper shaving brass (I didn't know it myself) is not surprising. Nice Shooting Board! :D
Thanks for the follow-up video that implements the new changes. I purchased those plans a while back but still haven’t unpacked my shop to build this. Great work, and I love seeing all of your answers to comments here! Many of my questions already answered.
Question for you James: Can you micro adjust the fence zero stop to zero, so that you don’t have to micro adjust to zero if the fence stop is off a quarter of a degree or so using the gyratory handle?
Yes. I have the detent setup that it is exactly 90° out to about a 5-in board. If I need more accuracy than that then sometimes I might have to do a little bit of tweaking.
Well, now that I have the miter gauge thing, I have been pondering if I should make one board for the square cuts, and another one for the miter gauge. It almost looks like the gauge and the square board would get in the way of each other. Side note, those drill bit depth gauges look pretty cool. Are they available on one of your links?
Thanks for that link. I did get some of that green 60,000 grit honing compound from Tay Tools, and love it for my plane irons and chisels. Might have to go back to them.
Thanks for the great instruction! Just grabbed all of the hardware and materials for this to use with my shiny new Lie-Nielsen #51. Looking forward to getting started!
Hi from the UK. Love your channel. I’ve a question about the fence.. when you change the angle from 90 degrees the end of the fence protrudes over the channel where the plane runs. If you were shooting 45 degrees you’d have to trim the fence to 45 degrees also. The alternative would be to have a dedicated 45 degree fence. I can’t see how you can just change the angle without some time consuming adjustment to the fence also. What’s your fix for this?
That's why the wooden piece on the fence adjusts in and out so you can move it to where the plane is at 45° or at 90° or anywhere in between. The two brass knobs in the back can loosen up in the fence. Can slide side to side easily.
How did you get the epoxy glue off the big 3/4" brass fence insert that locked it in the hole? You did reuse this from your first shootingboard, or did you use a replacement screw? Is this available as a spare part?
I talked about that a bit on the how-to version of the video if you want to see more detail on it. But I called up veritas and at the time they did not have one for sale so they just offered to send one to me. When I asked how much they said free and put it in the mail. I've been told they since now listed for a buck a piece.
I'm curious as to what is it about it that makes it "exactly what you want?" It doesn't do anything different than the one you have positioned on my right. I can see the track makes the plane glide, but there is never friction issue without it. So what makes it exactly what you want? I'm not trying to be a smart arse, I'm just trying to find out what I'm missing here.
It has an adjustable fence it has the stop that slides out farther on the bench to keep it level. It has the mounting place for the donkey ear It is longer than the original one so I get a longer stroke. It just has a lot of other bells and whistles that make it a step better.
If you want to see more detail there's a link in the description to the second channel. On that channel I do more teaching and talk through the project. This channel is just for show for people who really don't care about woodworking they just want to watch it being done.
You said the new one is longer but they both look to be the same length in the video. Did you use the 24 in track for the new one and the old one used a 16 in track?
They are very old and collectible. And therefore very hard to find. If I were buying one just to use I would buy the new veritas. It is a phenomenal plane and in my opinion better than the old Stanley's.
Two things: I didn't see plans for this on your site. And is there an 'in use' video demonstrating the board and why you like it so much over previous versions?
Here's the link to the plans. www.woodbywright.com/shop/shootingboard and yes on the second channel I have a whole video that is the how-to version of this one. On this channel I usually just post the easy watching videos and the other channel has all of the how to versions of the exact same video. ruclips.net/video/NomRxPUY2Nc/видео.html
You can shoot with just about any plane. However a low angle plane is generally better than a high angle plane. And in this case the plane I'm using is a low angle bevel down skewed plane. So it's a step farther than just a low angle plane. As to sharpness the sharper the better. The dull planes have a very hard time with end grain
If you are like me, it will be exactly what you want - until you have used it for a period of time. Then you will start thinking of other modifications that you need to make - so it will be exactly what you want! It's a viscous cycle.
there is a tool colectign group sown there that use to do meets. not sure if they Still do. i think I have them listed under groups on Handtoolfinder.com
I like your videos, but I do not like how you do not narrate why you are doing what you are doing. It is hard to follow at times and requires going back over the video a few times to understand what you are doing and why.
This is the ASMR channel. This channel is for the people that just want to watch and not learn. I have a whole nother channel for the how to and teaching. Wood by wright how to. If there is a video here then there is a corresponding video there with voice over.
This is an all hand tool channel. I teach how to use hand tools here. Using power tools would not aid that. On top of that I find it more enjoyable to slow down and do things the more patient way.

I've been watching your stuff for a while. This was very special. Nicely done sir.
I always cut my nails at the worst times too. Great work.
Thanks James!
I found the track and stainless steel bar part, started to mark my LN no51 quite bad
That is why they include the nylon slides.
On your ultimate shooting board ,where did you get your piece of metal that the plane rides on

I think I missed it somehow, but what is the detachable piece used for?
It supports longer boards further out on the bench.
@@WoodByWright ah ok, so the magnets are just used as a neat way of storing and more importantly not misplacing it.
bingo. no more hunting for the board that is the correct height!

Here you go. lddy.no/u17z I did a video on them on the second channel a few weeks ago if you want to see detail on them.

What is the board with magnets for?
That is so you can slide it out away from the shooting board. It allows long boards to rest on it.
Is the track wide enough for a veritas low angled jack plane?
Yes.

Awesome build!!! 🙌🏻
Where did you get the track for your shooting plane?
It is a kit from veritas. There's a link in the description and in the pinned comment at the top of the list if you want to see the exact one.
What the tape you're using at the 7 minute mark?
That is a nylon tape that comes with the kit from veritas.
Nice! I’d never looked at the cost of the old Stanley 51/52 until now. 🤯
Yup. It is the most expensive plane in my shop!
Big horn sells a kit of counter sink bits on Amazon
What did Rex say about it? :)
Don't known if he has seen it yet.
Great job, wish I could go to your Yankee swap meets, very jealous! Aussie , hi to all!

At 4:19 "You can shave brass with a card scraper."
Yes, but not for long.
Good thing it only needs two strokes.
I tried making a simple shooting board. And believe it or not, it didn't work. 😭

Amish?
No. The Amish used way more power tools. I used to work near them and they would laugh at me for being all hand tools.
