Thanks for pulling up the map. I think the plan with Rook's Rest is to cut off the Black's army by land. Dragonstone is like an island so their only path from Dragonstone without Rooks Rest/ the coast looks like through Driftmark and the Gullet which on the map it's all surrounded by water. Not sure what the plan would be for the Blacks if the Greens take Rooks Rest.
@@Stephie_L You're welcome. Yeah, they mentioned it in the episode that they are going to cut off their access to the mainland harbor with Rook's Rest. Greens make a huge advancement.
@@JodysCorner Yeah I'm team Black but Rhaenyra has not shown much smarts (yet) when it comes to tactics. The Greens seem to be better strategists right now. The Blacks have more dragons but they don't seem to have any land advantage. Daemon seems all over the place too...hope we get over that soon lol

So hear me out, Jodes. When Rhaenys decided to attack Vhagar and strap herself in, she was proclaiming "I am going to end this now or die trying." If she defeats Aemond in single combat, the war is won. She had a battle-seasoned dragon, Aegon just went down, and it was a do or die situation. If she flees, the war continues. She also still needed to defend the keep and Rhaenyra's banner lord. I think there were a lot of factors that led to her decision to stay and fight. I think that she believed she could have won. That's how boss Rhaenys was. She tried to fell the largest living dragon. No guts, no glory. Because we were not in her head, we'll never know, but blood drunk on the back of a dragon, would you not have the balls to take on the world? You forget these are Targaryens. The ego and sheer cohones of this house is a magnificent thing to behold. We've seen it time and time again.
Honestly, I couldn't imagine a more fitting end. She went out in a blaze of glory and embodied the words of their house. "Fire and blood."

@bigredcrazyk Nail on the head, also realistically let's do an actual tally. Rhaenyra (Team Black) is losing REAL BAD, to be completely honest they are getting their asses whopped. They haven't really had a legitimate "win" yet.
Rhaenyra got her throne usurped, lost her daughter, lost her son, lost multiple houses who have sided with the Greens and possibly more due to Daemon going behind her back & doing what he did etc. The Greens have also already taken more battleground victories so far, whilst Daemon is fighting his own demons at Harrenhal which is soon to be met with the green armies they have accumulated, possibly Aemond & Vhagar etc. So Rhaenys NEEDED to try to make this count for something so that all is not lost. If they continue to lose the way they have been, the battle is won before the war even started and Rhaenyra should just forfeit and bend the knee at this rate.
She has the most seasoned dragon, is also the eldest rider & knows that if she doesn't try her best (at the potential expense of her life) than this is it for her, her grandkids, niece and honestly just HONOR in general. To think in Season 1 she gave Rhaenyra so much shit and yet ended up being her BIGGEST champion and the amount of respect she ended up having for Rhaenyra is what makes her sacrifice a sad but beautiful one. She gave her a reason to make that worth something, to believe that her niece and her cause was worth fighting for.
Also in a battle sense, if she didn't try to take out Vhagar, what is stopping Aemond from going straight to Dragonstone (which is right next to rooks red) and finishing everyone up? Now with Aegon being nearly dead, the army's being in disarray and Vhagar being injured and not at full capacity, that's most likely to not happen now even though Rhaenys is dead. So yes, she may not have killed Vhagar but she finally was able to level the playing field a bit, and her death is about to put the battery in the backs of everyone on Team Black because they been wayyyyyyy too passive. Now it's like alright, yall need to be on daemon demon time now enough is enough.
Also! Rhaenys I think feels guilt knowing she ultimately could of ended the war before it started when she was in the dragon pit and didn't, so i feel like this was her way of making that right in a way.

Your lying, this was characteristic for her. She was tasked to go protect the castle in Rook Rest and she was determined to do that even though the odds wasn’t in her favor, which she knew. She was never a coward and ran away from a battle. There has been no story changes, what are y'all even talking about. You would have a point if she didn’t die like this in the source material.

I agree. Rhaenys is a headstrong, determined person and has never shown signs of running away from anything. She went into this battle knowing she would win or lose. This seems very in character of Rhaenys to me. Rhaenys is not a runner even though I wish she did flee.
It's not about her dying. I've read the books, she fought a true 2v1 in the books and fought valiantly. Here, she got sneaked by a dragon that's bigger than the castle itself. The fight was legendary but the execution was poor. I'm a die hard fan, but i can't dismiss this.

This isn’t a fairytale, it’s supposed to be tragic. Thats GoT. People make mistakes, pride takes over, rage etc. it’s what makes the show what it is and so different than others.
She knew she was going to die. She didn’t need to kill Vhagar even she just needed to wound her really badly to up their chances.
She was literally on her way back to Dragonstone after her first and 2nd attacks, how would she die exactly fleeding from battle? She only died because her stupid arse went back make it make sense.

This wasn't uncharacteristic of Rhaenys, she went there to fight for her queen and she did exactly that. Meleys and caraxes are the only battle tested dragons that team black has at the moment. Once she saw vhagar I think she knew this was a one way trip, so she did as much damage as she could.
I think Rhaenys also fought Vhagar and went back to fight her/possibly cripple her because she believed that Vhagar posed a deadly threat to her husband and her grand-daughters (especially Baela, who rode a juvenile a fraction of Vhagar's size).
Pretty obvious why she turned back . What daemon told her has been on her mind ever since “what if I just burned them when I had the chance , none of this would’ve happened” she was atoning for that miss opportunity. & the show didn’t lose any viewers lol . Most people like way more than 2 ppl , yall just don’t like anyone . They didn’t do it for shock value , it’s literally IN THE BOOK BEAT FOR BEAT 😂

Just to clarify they understand that it’s implied that the guy that saved Corilis (the black targaryian) is possibly Corilis’s son. She wasn’t looking at him because she was attracked to him, she was looking at how much he looks like corilis. Something like that.

FYI in the books, Rhaenys/Meleys was holding it DOWN 1 v 2 at the same damn time. She almost killed Sunfyre and was holding off Vhagar while they tried to jump her; she was the only dragon that was specifically mentioned to have a chance at 1 vs 1ing Vhagar in the right circumstance. The book also made it clear that she was a G and refused to escape because she was willing to risk her life to end the war right now and then at Rook's Rest, and she -almost- did. Just as she was -almost- queen; her life had a lot of -almost- moments and its super poetic and bittersweet. But she went out in fire and blood; long live the Queen That Should Have Been

@@JodysCorner I like your channel and enjoy your reactions. I’m just saying that you’re wanting something to drastically change when this is legit already written. Deviating slightly from the books is fine but they won’t with something major like Rhaenys dying. It sucks and nobody wants it to happen but it’s apart of the story.
The problem was the directing and editing, not the story. They should have made it so that she got caught off guard, while being in the middle of the battle. But her almost retreating two times and turning back, while the odds are mostly against her, just seems irrational and stupid.

I'll tell you why she stuck around, because of that remark that Daemon made to her of how she could have avoided this war had she stood her ground and burnt down Aegon and house green before she made her big escape in season one. Guilt made her stay for this fight, making sure that she didn't leave anything undone.

She wanted to end the war. Take out Aegon, take out Vhagar. Period. Like an absolute warrior. Loved her and the way they looked at each other before, it’s like they agreed to do it at any cost. I also think she blames herself for not ending it when she could. She knew she had to try.
I think it's a combination of two things. One is daemons words to her in the first episode. The second is after watching what aemond does to aegon, she realises he's not a warrior with the biggest dragon, he's a lunatic with the biggest dragon. If she tries to flee to the safety of dragonstone he's crazy enough to follow her back and attack. She felt she needed to stop him there or risk him coming after her and the people she loves.
Right because Dragonstone is literally across from Rooksrest. Also in that moment, she felt that she had the chance to either end it all or do the most damage. She knew it was a 50/50 chance and she took it.
It’s crazy that Aegon ..this child who LITERALLY ran from the throne is now being frowned upon like he ever got the proper guidance…they set him up for failure ..everyone knew who he was before they FORCED him into that chair don’t be mad now 🤷🏽♀️

No Vermithor - Blacks only have 5 dragons at this point (Caraxes, Meleys, Moondancer, Syrax, Vermax) while Greens have 4 (Vhagar, Dreamfyre, Sunfyre, Tessarion)
funny thing is if Rheanerya had any spies they would have told her Vhagar is gone and not protecting the city she could have taken Syrax Jace on Vermax and Baela on Moondancer and took Kings Landing right then and there
They still have scorpions, that's still a risk. Rhaenyra should've let them take Rooks Rest and make the calculation that Vahgar would likely be there since Dragonstone is so close. She needed to think from the Greens perspective of what they think SHE would do (which is send a dragon). If there was an army on land via Daemon by this point he could've maybe handled Kings Landing and had another dragon on standby from Dragonstone (in case Vahgar was in Kings Landing). Team Black were not prepared at all. I know they're trying to flesh out Daemon's arc but so much time wasted in Harrenhal with those visions and still no army.
Meanwhile, Vermithor is just collecting dust. 🙄

Spoiler alerttttt - This is exactly the situation that happens later on in the books. Kings Landing is left open while the dragons are off fighting. It gets conquered easily.

Guys you are missing the most obvious. She was there to defend the castle. Fighting the King and Vhagar was an added bonus. She didn't leave whens she could have because she needed to confirm if the ground threat to the castle was neutralized. If you notice, when she flies over the battlefield for the last time, she is looking at the ground. This is to confirm the castle is safe and the ground troops are no longer a threat. She was leaving after that but Vhagar came out of nowhere.
Then why was she looking in the sky??

She clearly saw him fall to the ground. This is hen she began looking up and flying away. She knew he was somewhere but did not know where.

People are missing a big point by focusing on Alicent. The small Council including Otto were planning to put Aegon on the thrown regardless. Her stupid ass made it worse by not understanding what he was saying as he was dying. But the fact remains Aegon would have been king regardless. Lol remember Otto even suggested that Raenhera marry Aegon to which the King scoffed at. Thats how bad Otto wanted his Blood in the mix to get the throne one way or another.

Rhaenys I guess tried to end the single greatest threat to Rhaenyra's campaign: Aemond and Vhagar. If she and Meleys could kill them, the true queen's campaign would be that much easier. That doesn't mean it was a good idea. Vhagar is the most battle seasoned dragon in the show and was at least twice the size of Meleys and could withstand more damage and deal more damage. Even though Rhaenys was the more experienced rider, Vhagar was the one that truly had the advantage. She died courageously...it just wasn't the right decision.
I hated losing Rhaenys. She and Corlys are the only characters i really loved in this show. But I get it. Rhaenys has a dragon rider's spirit. She had to go back. Sure, she might die, but she might've won too. She had to try. I hate that we lost this character but i love that she went out fighting.

George did so good writing the outline of Daemon’s kids in Fire & Blood, I really hope they get more screentime. I like how he paralleled them to the Stark kids with Baela/Arya Rhaena/Sansa Aegon/Bran Viserys/Rickon and even Harwin’s son Jace with Jon
but Daemon is so different from Ned 😂😂 Rhaena’s egg is supposed to be pink I hope they don’t change that and actually give her a pink one that’s the only dragon I was looking forward to. She named the pink one Morning to juxtapose Baela’s Moondancer and I thought it was so cute

She flew towards the castle to retreat. If you look at the map, the castle is in between the battlefield and Dragonstone. But Aemond cut her off.

Nah the writing around Rhaenys is one of the weakest in the entire show. That entire crowning scene last season and now this. It seems like the directors felt the need to portray her in a strong female lead light, when they should make it more realistic.
Almost there. The page ripped from the book is absolutely significant. It's a page from a story about a Queen of had to flee her homeland, did what she had to do to save her people. She was a warrior Queen, and she married correctly and made the right allies. And she did save her people. It's Rhaenera and Arya's favorite story. That Queen was Dornish and hundreds of years later, Dorne is still ruled by a woman.
When Alicent gave her that page it was a reminder of what Rhaenera said. "She didn't care if her father had a son and she's no longer his favorite." And it was saying "You should run and save yourself and your people. Start over, somewhere else."
Dorne is ruled by a woman or a man, whoever is firstborn into the ruling line of the Princes/Princesses of House Martell.

I agree they didnt flesh out enough why Rhaenys went back. The logical decision is to flee and fight another day. From her POV Aegon is probably dead. She did her job.
They make these decisions to make things look cool but it takes all logic out of it. In the book it was a 2 on 1 that did her in, not her turning back stupidly when she was about to escape after damaging the King
She isn’t a soldier, she has been giving dumb advice to the queen and made lots of stupid decisions herself. She killed a lot of people in the dragon pit and didn’t harm the king instead 😂

The small council has no interest in the dead king’s wishes or last words. They crowned King Aegon because they don’t want a ruling Queen. The show misleads the viewers that Alicent could have stopped Aegon from being crowned king.
Another obvious reason is that they will lose their positions of power aswell if Rhaenyra succeeds.
also Daemon and Caraxes are the GOAT'S for a reason this episode proved it. Daemon said in episode 1 of this season he and Rhaenys could take Caraxes and Meleys to take out Aemond and Vhagar RHAENYS said no now look at her. Daemon is ALWAYS RIGHT they coulve took out Otto last season in the finale Rhaenyra said no.

It does not matter WHAT Viserys said! No one cares what Alicent or Rhyneara have to say. They are not ready for a woman to sit the throne. Viserys was fine with that too until he killed his wife. He also heard and believed what suited him.

Yall critique is vlid but tbh its the shows fault. They didnt do a good job of showing how strong Rhaenys was so it looks like a suicide mission. Its not supposed to be. In the book, Aemond + Aegon fight her on purpose bc she would kill them in a 1v1. Melys is the 1 dragon that stands a chance against Vhegar in a 1v1, and Rhaenys is more battle tested than anyone not named Daemon and the show REALLY didnt show that well at all. If they did it wouldve been clear that she was going back to finish the job bc she legit could. They fumbled it fr. Rhaenys isnt stupid at all they really just did the fight bad. If they did it right Aemond wouldve likely still won but it wouldve been close. She's a soldier she cant abandon her post

Guys, they have a problem with how the show executed Rhaenys death bc so far how they portrayed rhaenys in the show is way different than how GRRM portrayed rhaenys in the books. Like as someone who also read the books, I can agree that It didn’t make sense for Rhaenys to go out the way she went out. In the books, she had no choice but in the show, she did so it’s more of the show direction issue so I believe they’re valid for feeling like that. I didn’t like how she went out either. I can respect it but I didn’t like it because I personally wanted more Rhaenys in the show and I feel like we didn’t get to spend more time with rhaenys.
We all know that since this show relies on the foundation of the book (which have unreliable narrators), there are going to be some tough pills to swallow such as faulty directions from the show & writers, slight deviations from the books, etc but to jump down their throats bc they feel disappointed with how the writers handled rhaenys and attempting to dismiss them & be condescending bc “yOu dO kNoW tHiS hApPeNeD iN tHe BoOkS rIgHt ..lol you guys know nothing” is the reason why many fans, especially them, can’t stand us book readers.

Meleys is red in color, not black, she is called The Red Queen. Fun Fact: Meleys' rider before Rhaenys was Alyssa Targaryen, sister-wife of Prince Baelon the Brave, mother of Viserys and Daemon. Did Jody forget that Criston Cole is one of the few knights in this era who has actually been to war? They say this in episode 2 of season 1 when Rheanyra was choosing the new king's guard. It's the reason she chose him because he has actually seen combat. Also Cole has been mentoring Aemond, teaching him how to fight. We see this in episode 8 where we see grown Aemond for the first time, training with Cole and actually besting him. Then in episode 9, while Cole and Aemond were looking for Aegon o crown him King, Aemond vents to Colde saying that he studies philosophy, history,tactics and trains with the same, furthering saying that he should be king. Then in this very episode, you have Alicent telling Aegon where are Viserys' history books are and that he doesn't understand the knowledge an wisdom they hold, further letting you know that Aemond and Cole knows what they are doing.

The council is completely competent, they made alliances throught political startegy unlike rhaenyra who relied on peope to remember oaths and offered nothing in return. Cole is a great commander, aemond has proven quite effective in strategy and leadership. The greens have the best pr team because their perception is that they care about the people. All the people know about the greens negatively is that aegon is a drunk n he killed a bunch of rat catchers.

Everyone wants to be King, but Jace actually proves true kingship. Out of everyone, he has been the most successful at actually gaining alliances through diplomacy. He got the greybeards from Cregan Stark in the North, he got safety and support from Jeyne Arryn in the Vale, and now he's secured the crossing at the Twins from the Freys. He might be young and wants to fight, but he is also not so rash as to not understand the importance of diplomacy that even many adults do not seem to grasp. He would actually one day make a great king.

To me what aemond did was reckless. What if aegon had made it out of the way and why kill Sunfyre with him. He could get aegon alone and kill him and still have have Sunfyre healthy and able to fight. Aegon is useless but his dragon. Rhaenys knew the moment Vhagar appeared that she was going to die. But she thought she had to do as much damage as possible against her. So she did. And Meleys seriously hurt Vhagar. She also decimated and demoralized Cole's army. What Rhaenys and Meleys have done here is incredibly important.

Aight ima tell you why Rheayns turned around and spun the block.
1) Black has only been taking lost after lost, from Coles campaign. They look as if they cant protect their allies. Especially if she runs away now.
2) As Aemond said. Them taking Rooks Rest cuts Dragonstone off from the rest of the crownlands, and isolates Rhaynara to Dragonstone and away from all supporters.
3) With Rooks Rest, the Greens can start seiging dragonstone, unless Corlys pulls the blockade around kings land to prevent that.
3) It was Rhaynara, her Heir Jace that committed to the plan. And Rheayns took up the task. So she was Honorbound to get the job done. Evey Dragonrider has to take a Vow to never run from a fight. No matter what. Because a dragon does not flee.
4) Even if she said fuck that honor, Vhagar would been able to attack Dragonstone, before the Blacks to gather, and monut their dragons in enough time respond to Vhagar before it burned down half of the castle.
5) Lord Stanton. The one getting pissed at everyone for not doing anything. He would of definitely switched sides hear not only has his lands and Castle been taken. But that Rheayns gave it up so easy.
We Rheayns took that task up. It was only do or die. And the crazy part is. Though he is being an ass about this. Stanton has been 100% correct. If the blacks made moves way sooner, Rheayns would of never been put in this situation to begin with. Oh well. 💚 💚
Rhaenys could not flee, even though she was smart enough to know that Vhagar would probably kill her. War was declared, her queen needed her to complete her mission, to protect Rook's Rest, to cripple or kill Vhagar. Rhaenys was a Targaryen princess, and the daughter of a Targaryen prince who was killed on a military campaign protecting the realm. She knew her duty to her queen and her family, whose lives were all endangered by Vhagar's continued survival.

Eh they sent her there to help/protect an ally. She decimated the army but as long as Vhagar is up the ally/Lord Staunton is screwed, so she went back instead of abandoning the mission. They should have sent two dragons at least knowing Vhagar is on the board and they’re being ballsy enough to attack a keep right across from Dragonstone.
