- It's winter and great time for good German/PA Dutch sweet and sours! This recipe comes from viewer Valerie Raymond and is a bit of a different take on the one I use so had to try it out! Love the apples in this! Thank you!
Red Cabbage & Apples
1 small head red cabbage shredded
3 medium apples pealed, cored and shredded
1/4 C sugar
1/2 C red wine vinegar
1 tsp ground cloves
Combine all and can either put in crockpot for 6 hrs on high or bake as I did for about an hour at 350F.

Give me cabbage boiled with sausage, bacon, or just boiled, I enjoy it all…thanks Helga….Fred
I love Davey's market! I always come out with more than I intended.
I've got the old Cockney Cabbage song stuck in my head 🥰
Good eats, proud of some of the home vibes you give us.
My parents love Davy’s. My mom has always diced up an apple or two into her sauerkraut whenever she makes pork & sauerkraut
That looks delicious! I wish my family would eat this. My son brings me red cabbage from the German restaurant he cooks at every October when it is on their Oktoberfest menu and I freeze small portions for enjoying throughout the year.
Oh, wow, that looks delicious! I'm trying to convince my wife (after 30 yrs of mostly East-Asian and Mexican food [where she traveled & near where we live, respectively]) to start trying more PA Dutch cooking. A lot in the books I've seen are high in sugar, carbs, or salt but this seems like another in my growing arsenal of healthier suggestions to try! Thank you!!
That looked awesome, Helga. I have fried cabbage and apples but never baked it. Thank you for sharing the recipe with us. Stay safe and stay warm
Looks wonderful Helga, be right over!!!! ☕
I’m fixing fried chicken for dinner. I’m in West Virginia; about 30 minutes from the Pennsylvania line. If I leave in 90 minutes I can be there in time for supper or dinner or whatever you call it.
I wonder why it's called Red cabbage when it's the color purple 💜. But you know it tastes good.
That looks so good.
Looks Delicious, Helga!
So very pretty and I'm sure tastie as well! Will be on my to cook list. Thank you for sharing this recipe from a viewer 😊
You're welcome!
Looks great. All ways liked cabbage.
Lovely color in that dish!
Thanks Helga from the central Oregon coast. I will try this in the crock pot tomorrow.😁
This looks really great Helga. Love the Pa style that you cook .
The cabbage looks good. Are you doing anything for lent this year? I love it when you start your cooking for lent ideas. Blessings 💕💕💕
Looks good, and as you say it's good for you. Although, I would be sorely tempted to cook the tenderloin (or pork chops) on top of the cabbage, and save one pot to be washed.
Helga definitely a delightful delicious looking dish and so pretty in color too. Oh, sounds so good with pork loin and mash potatoes. Oh yum. Love from Ky.🍎🍎🍎🥬🥬🥬
I’ve had that, it’s delicious.
Sounds good.
Thanks
Execellent. Just like back home (Germany). I almost use the same recipe as you. I make it often especially with Rouladen and Sauerbraten etc.. Sometimes I cheat a little and instead of apples and sugar I just use applesauce. Works great as well. Love your cooking.
Thanks so much! Oh yes, applesauce is a great cheat, LOL!
TyHelga, I was looking for this
Awsome!
Add about 3 strips of crumbled bacon.
Sounds good!
I would add 1/4 cup of butter.
