It's odd that you said the 992 gt3 doesn't move around in undulations on the road like the touring, because on Harry's Garage, he said that the new gt3 was way to twitchy on bad B roads compared to older models. What are your thoughts on his comments?
A completely brilliant video Damian it captures our day out perfectly, your commentary demonstrates real insight, thanks for the memories and for mentioning my channel, here’s to next time :-) - Roger
Excellent video! The fun factor, the engagement, the feeling of needing to guide a sports car thru challenging curves is what gives the experience richness. That then connects you to the personality of the car, in fact it defines it. I have 22K miles on my manual winged 991.2 GT3 and it is a joy to drive at sane speeds on tight twisty roads (mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee). I was offered a 992 GT3 Touring allocation at $30K over MSRP and I said, “no thank you.” “Competent” is just a euphemism for being unruffled at higher and higher speeds; that means less personality, less need for strict attention and engagement, and less of a dramatic experience. As cars become more “competent” they become more boring at the speeds you need to maintain safely on roads traversed by other people going about their lives with their children. Streets are not race tracks. The public is ever becoming less tolerant of speed, noise, and hooligan behavior on the public roads-understandably. We’re seeing an end of a motoring era evolve around us. I’ll stick with my 991.2, just as I will stick with my Speciale over a Pista of any new 296GTB Versione Speciale. Thanks Damian. (BTW Damian...I hope you get a chance to drive and review the new Corvette C8. I just bought one and it is phenomenal. NA 6.2L pushrod V8 that makes that distinctive American roar, no start/stop, incredible chassis-steering-brakes with more than ample power.)
You are 100% correct, I found the 992 GT3 to be benign, almost refined (in terms of the way it drives) and yet quite fidgety/trammy on certain types of road. I also didn't like the interior at all and it didn't offer anything over and above my 991.2 GT3 RS. In the end I decided to keep my 991.2 GT3 RS, dropped my allocation for the 992 GT3 RS and picked up a 296 GTB (non AF) to add a different flavour to my garage. I also agree with your take on the 458 Speciale, I didn't like the 488 at all in any guise - largely because of the engine.
this is one of the best videos you have made, two of my dream cars and two of the best presenters on youtube in my opinion, it would be good if Damian and Roger and Jason did future reviews together
Damien, the S/T single mass flywheel and clutch work in the 992 Touring … a few in Rennlist have done it and comments are game changer … the shorter ratio gear box is possible as well changing the ring and pinion with S/T OEM parts … compelling
@@TheCarGuysTVI think the shorter ratio S/T r&p OEM parts work in our 991.2 Touring as same trans … about 9% shorter … S/T single mass flywheel might be same issue as 911R … harmonic vibrations crankshaft damage main bearings
Agreed. The previous 991.2grn in my mind is better looking and will become the classic. Reminds me of the M3s where the e46M3 is still considers the modern benchmark in terms of design/proportions over its replacements.
The 0 to 60 I'm sure has been recorded in the very low 3 sec in one of these. Ps...I thoroughly enjoy your reviews Damien, you are such a natural entertaining reviewer, Jason too!🙂
Love the vid, well done Damien 💪🏼 Great editing, banter to the camera, stop-start 🤣 the lot - as is my tonic, more Porsche content please………but I am enjoying Drive Every Ferrari too 👌
Great review Damian. The only ‘problem’ with the 991.2 Touring, is that there are only something like 48 RHD cars in the U.K. - so future buyers for a used Touring will likely have more of a chance to get the 992 Touring.
Shows that whatever 911 you are driving, as long as its in good condition, enjoy it thoroughly, because you are just lucky enough to be behind the wheel of the most iconic Porsche of all time ! And be it it 991 or 992, I’d opt for the Touring any time, with the manual box.
Great video and I love your channel! I have a 991 Touring with 25,000 miles. I hope to put 200k. I just upgraded my steel discs for the Surface Transforms carbon discs. I highly recommend it. Cherry on top for the car!
Superb video! I watched it to confirm my prejudices, which it did. I got a 991.2 Targa after seeing Roger's vid and would not swap it for the 992. The new one sounds much worse (PPF?) Doesn't the GT3 have one? BTW at 25:30 your watch miraculously changed, good editing but no cigar!
wow Damien you seem to be loving this (those 'worrrrs' reminded me of Tiff when he first tested the Maca F1 and Harry when he tested the one 77) the sound of the 992 is perfection; a cup car on the road Roger is a lucky fella.
Great video! The 991.2 touring with the slick manual is one of the best all around drivers cars. Porsche is sandbagging the numbers on the 992. I have a feeling we are not getting the whole story. Lastly, I have no idea who the hell is gonna properly drive the 992 RS 🤣
I prefer your car Damian ,mostly for the reasons YOU like it so much. I dont like the digital gauges, the excess of "intrusionist" tech , the fake manual lever and lack of a manual(in the model you tested). A thing that you maybe didn't get from your driving BUT Harry Metcalfe showed in his review is how horrible is to drive the 992 GT3 in anything that is not smooth asphalt, the combination of wider track, huge tires and the wishbones in the front makes the car "rails in" into the imperfections on the road, and if you ever had a fast car that does that ,i had it,its detestable after a few months driving everyday, serious NO! NO! business in my book.
I agree with you, the 991 GT3 is more playful because it moves under you and with a Manual it engages you like no other car. The 992 GT3 front end is the highlight honestly but that’s about it for me. I don’t like the interior or the size of the 992 and if I want to add a 992 to my garage it would be the 992.2 GT3RS with the 4.2 flat 6 NA making 550HP at 9250 RPM. That is the one i will be buying.
Well done Damian on the comparison, and a BIG thanks to Roger too. For others, please do check out Rogers RUclips channel, he is a brilliant car reviewer and the best at narration...he takes you on a journey with him. As for the cars. Well some things I agree with you and some not, but that is why Porsche have different models to suit all in the market place. Mine is manual with steel brakes (better feel and cheaper, and lets face it, I am not ever going to be able to drive this like a pro, but I have FUN on and off the track!). My Summary. The 992 GT3 is the BEST GT3 ever, without doubt! Driven them all, this is an engineering masterpiece! Is the GT3 the best Porsche ever??? Not sure yet but for driver engagement, I still love my analog 993 turbo the most, but the 992GT3 is a very close second. AIMO. Thanks guys, well done. Both of your Spyders in Wales next??
992 is really NOT a thing of beauty though...way TOO big. 992 screen is TOO busy & confusing & Stop / Start has NO PLACE in such a high performance car! Roger has no choice but to be so positive otherwise he will be ex-communicated by Porsche Chester! (i.e. he is not really impartial) so I agree with almost everything you said Damian. No doubting the technical prowess of the new car but maybe a bit too slick, a bit too 'Audi' in places. Great Vid! Thanks also to Roger for loaning his nice motor! Well done guys! 👍🏻
Both fantastic cars in there own right. In my opinion the 991 is the last proper 911. The new 992 is to clinical and more and more heading in the Audi way.
Am I the only one who finds Roger a bit.. creepy in his delivery? Give him a set of Dracula teeth and a black cape and it would complete the ensemble for me 🧛♂️ Only joking! 😄. 991.2 GT3 touring every day of the week! It’s just that bit more analogue. Awesome review guys!!
Huge fan. It’s interesting your comments about the older car having more character than the new one. I’m 60, had 911’s forever (since switched to Ferrari), and just about every new 911 review I can remember nearly always stated the prior one had more character. Going by this logic means we need the very first one! I believe out of Jerry Seinfelds incredible Porsche collection his favourite is a 1973 911 Tangerine RS and his ultimate Porsche is not even a 911 but a 356 convertible which he describes as “sports car perfection” 🤔
Great video, bit surprised that you felt new 992 was less twitchy on the road compared to the 991.2 as a lot of the other car reviews (eg harry metcalfes) suggesting otherwise.
