I've quit a 17-year nicotine addiction and three years of intense alcohol use. Coffee is the most addictive thing I have experience with. I'm rating in terms of how much personal willpower it takes to stay off it, how many times I have fallen off the wagon, and how important it seems to me to get it regularly. I think people should be careful with substances that are so addictive.

When I was a preteen, there was a sweet elderly black man who worked for my dad in our family convenience store. Everybody called him "Major". Major was like a grandfather to me and my older brother and younger sister. Every morning my dad would always make a pot of strong coffee for he and Major to sip on. One Saturday morning, while I was hanging out at the store, I got a cup of coffee in one of those white foam cups. Major spotted me siping on it and came over and whispered to me, "That coffee is gonna make you black as I is, if you keep drinking it." I think about his words every time I drink coffee. I miss you Major.

Exactly. You just proved my point, which I'm trying to help others to see. Coffee is toxic and the more you drink, the more your body is stressed, the more it produces stress hormones and that is why you cannot sleep. Coffee is in no way good for you at all. Plus it's like an enema which flushes your electrolytes and minerals, thus depleting you. I'm really shocked that Ken would say these things because I thought he knew better. Avoid coffee or limit it.

Speaking as a carnivore… I’ve found that coffee does increase cortisol and stress because caffeine is a plant neurotoxin. I’ve lost more weight by getting off coffee and caffeine, and I’ve heard the same for others. I also stopped grinding my teeth after I stopped drinking coffee. Coffee gave me cravings for more food, which I theorize has to do with the increased stress it causes, which does influence blood sugar. Without coffee, now I can do OMAD where as before, coffee would spark my appetite within an hour or so of consumption. The fact is, stress is a hidden factor for a lot of people’s weight issues. Coffee also makes me pee more which tells me how the stress mechanism is so deep and internal. And the perceived energy and alertness that one gets from coffee can be easily interpreted as stress or mild paranoia rather than positive energy itself. Also, by removing coffee, I’m also not dehydrated anymore and desire to drink water now, which has a huge influence on my health.
Bottom line. Stopping coffee and caffeine was the best move I’ve ever made.

I do not find it to be dehydrating or unnerving, and honestly, it allows certain family members to continue their existence (my in-laws shall remain nameless to protect the innocent; me). My son has ADHD. Coffee calms him down and helps him concentrate. It's the same basic principle as how ADHD meds work. The ADHD brain is processing at a slightly slower rate than others, and hyperactive behavior (or inattention) is a resulting coping skill. If you give a stimulant, like caffeine, it speeds up the processing speed, reducing the hyperactive coping skills because they can then receive and process things around them at a rate that others do. For him, a cup of morning coffee works almost as well as a low dose of Focalin.

Thank you Dr. Barry - especially for your endorsement of the carnivore diet - which has been helping me so much. I now drink hot water from my ex-coffee mug and pretend it's coffee. That way I still "enjoy my coffee" without any of its questionable effects. Bottom line, coffee is a plant that I don't need any more. But the mug, the warmth, the liquid, the ritual of comfort - those are keepers. Sometimes I add butter and a few grains of celtic sea salt.

Regardless of the studies about the effects of coffee/caffeine one way or the other, coffee is a plant food, comes from a plant, is a plant, is a drug, and I am trying to be a hyper-carnivore and be free of all plants for the first time in my life and see how I feel by just eating meat and water. When I was 25 I had a bleeding ulcer. Surgery was recommended-I declined. I drank creosote tea for three months and the acidity or acidosis went away. One of the things I found out was avoid heating coffee, ie. ground coffee for more than 15 minutes because it creates tannic acid. Tanic acid when overheating and coffee burns and erodes the stomach lining. Also became aware of chili peppers and capsicum. When over cooking chili make sure it goes from its natural color to a brilliant green color emerald color or to a brilliant red color but never go beyond to make it more spicy because the capsicum becomes acidic and it burns my stomach. This chemical when taking to extremes the capsicum becomes very very hot and causes inflammation of the intestinal lining. Since then I would drink my coffee fresh brewed within 15 minutes and it has over 100 nutrients and it is healthy.

As such, I’ve made up my mind and finally get rid of it after the nth attempt (and I hope I would not have the n+1). Although it might not apply to everyone, to me coffee is additive like drugs and over time I need to consume more and more of it to maintain the same benefits when my body has developed higher tolerance on it.

longer roasting time). I've heard some say that coffee is not allowed on strict PHD's, but

When I was younger, I shook badly when I had a black coffee that it was embarrassing. So I stopped drinking it. Later Dr. Berry told the youtube world about checking B12 if someone has heart palpitations, and my doc totally was amazed. I had never been checked before and it was ridiculously low. My heart problems were caused by a super low B12. So I tried coffee again after having my weekly B12 shots (B12 shots leave my body in 6 days), and NO JITTERS, no shaking, no weirdness. I think my low B12 levels (which I may have had for decades) may have caused the over-sensitivity to coffee. Thanks again, Dr. Berry for making that video on B12. NO ONE ever checked it until I insisted after seeing your video.

Stupid me, I am one of those people that will believe everything. First of all I love coffee and never giving it up. It has affected me my whole life and I’m almost 50. I recall growing up in the Philippines we were so poor that my parents couldn’t afford formula. So they would roast rice and my mother would give me that instead. And it would also be their coffee. So I believe Dr. Berry as far as the essential vitamins and antioxidants from coffee.

Not for me. I love coffee 2 to 3 cups per day but I know for sure when I quit and I have done it several times I have less joint pain and inflammation, less joint cracking, I have more energy throughout the day, am happier and less irritable. Sleep better and just get more stuff done. I just quit again 2 days ago and already feel better....so I'm not at all a believer of those studies. Sure temporarily it will make you concentrate better but throughout the day all day it will actually make concentration worse.....there was a study done that said after drinking coffee for a long time the caffeine high and energy boost you get from coffee is just your body reaching it's normal state of energy because your output has been lowered. I think it negatively effects your adrenal glands. Like I said i love coffee and I will probably always have some but I also know it can have a negative effect on me. Can't wait for a cold brew in the summer.

Completely agree. It makes me jittery. Having said that, I've experienced times like when on holiday when relaxing and getting lots of sun, that I feel great. Maybe relaxing for 3-4 days or more, plus getting good amounts of sun can balance things out so I feel good and not jittery or anxious. Maybe more exercise could work for me too. Who knows. I'm just going to continue experimenting but definitely my rule of thumb is no caffeine currently if I want to feel my best.

It might not kill right away but if you drank a bunch of coffee, what would happen? It's toxic, plain and simple and the "energy" you get is actually your body producing stress hormones as a result of the toxicity of the coffee. Almost anything plant based is not good for you. It won't kill you right away of course, unless you take a bunch of it. Simple rule, if you have something that can hurt or kill you if you take too much, it's toxic.

I had a SAB in 2020 and went through 6h brain surgery. After this I had a pounding horrible headache for 10 months straight, 24/7. The only medication that actually truly helped to get me through this was 1 caffeine pill in the morning and 1 caffeine pill in the afternoon. I very slowly weaned myself off of these, when the pain subsided naturally. Now 3,5 years later, I still have a very sensitive head and get headaches very easily. Depending on heat, pressure, posture and I guess hormones also. I love coffee and on many days it has helped me to get rid of the headache and even migraines. In the past I used to drink up to 7 cups per day (possibly unconsciously self-medicating for ADHD) but now I drink a reasonable amount of 1-2 cups per day and I'm happy with that 😊 Thank you Dr. Berry!!
