@@elblueblazer I saw Radiohead on their O.K. Computer tour in Salem, Oregon. They played on indoor College Basketball court. It was an Amazing Fxcking Show! Still in my too 10 of all shows.
Opening night of the Oceania tour... I arrived alone and left with 5 or 6 other new friends. We met Elijah Wood, got hammered, rocked the fuck out in the pit to this all-time setlist and then went out to Korean BBQ. Maybe the best night I ever had in L.A. - this was the last time the Pumpkins were kinda underground. The mainstream didn't care anymore, this lineup made Oceania, which was/in an artistic triumph and it felt real, organic and like Billy was listening to us again AND having fun. Then, the tour kinda stalled after the big sphere thing they toured with, Billy sold out to Visa and well, now they're kinda just re-doing themselves after their Greatest Hits tour (which was pretty good for what that actually is)... The last bastion of fresh, collaborative SP music. No matter what, rock on. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
This lineup doesn't get enough love from the fans. Listening to the Oceania record you could tell that Billy had moved forward for the first time since Zwan. And unfortunately like Zwan this lineup last one record...
I was there too, my first time in LA, only was in town for 20 hours then had to leave again. I was in the pit, Nicole's side. Met some cool people, one couple- the girl was really hot, she was from basically the same town as me in Wisconsin, small world. Billy seemed grumpy most of the night.
I agree with a lot of the comments on here about this lineup. Not sure what happened but as far as I'm concerned Oceania was the last great Pumpkins album. Thank you so much for this wonderful upload!
Yeah Geek USA is definitely a great example of Jimmy's signature style and this guy did a great job with it. I mean I prefer old school Jimmy on the drums, but this guy is not bad at all.
I went to the Milwaukee show a week later, only my second pumpkins show since Jan 1997. Took a girl id met online, she loved it, said she never realized what a great guitarist Billy was, even called him sexy. But i didn't get laid.
Nice to come across a show from this era. While not all incarnations of the Pumpkins are equal I don't see the problem with this band being called "The Smashing Pumpkins". Mick Byrne is an exciting drummer to watch; not JC, but close enough in style to compliment the music while adding his own. The band is tight and they're having fun. Good stuff.
I hear the bass line of Nicole Fiorentino, and I think she is great (and graceful). But I wish I could see her much more in the video.... filming is wrong... too focused on guys!
This is a weird version of the Pumpkins where I think Billy is the only original member. I always felt they were never the same after the Mellon Collie era when they fired Jimmy for awhile and kept changing lineups, but this lineup does a great job backing up Billy on the old school tracks as well as the new ones. It's nice to see the drummer has some solid chops and does Jimmy's parts justice. Also it's crazy to see them play "Pissant," I don't think I've ever seen them play that song live before. I remember my sister had that B-side album they released with that song on it, and that was my favorite song from it so it's cool to finally hear it live even if it's not with the original lineup.
This tour was sadly under-appreciated. I saw them do oceania all the way thru, and the second act of the set they just ran thru classics. It really was excellent.
I got that show too but thought it was super boring to play an album in order, then the same old tired 90s hits that we've heard a million times. Hated it.. sorry. I prefer this show by a long way!
One day... i wish Billy would sit down on the stage, just him and his guitar, and do total acoustic versions of: Sad Peter Pan, Bye June, and Honestly.
I was at this show. After the show there was a Tequila after party at the Viper Room and it was hosted by Perry Ferrell and friends. I went to said party and met Perry, Flee and Billy Zane. Lol wut a sick damn night! 🤘
@reno82 actually yeah I do know what Billy was upset at. He wasn't happy most of the show. The volume in his receiver wasn't correct at the start. He thought they didn't get enough applause after the first song and motioned unhappily to the drummer to begin Panopticon. Then something happened side stage because Nicole looked over, drummer was looking at what was going on too. Whatever happened it only annoyed Billy more. Sound guy started playing the circus music after Panopticon instead of after Starla, that just pissed off Billy even more. It was a good show but he had weird energy all night. Something was off.
@@reno82something happened to Nicole’s bass, the sound went out or she messed up and missed some notes… that is the first time he looks at her with kinda of a “wtf” look… he then asks the sound guy to raise his monitors’ volume, maybe twice he does this and once more looks at Nicole but it was for a good reason… i was at the show too and not sure what braddittner means, Billy was in high spirits for this show… he was fired up and anytime he plays a setlist like this (which isn’t often) it means he’s ready to show the world he’s the best… and I’ve seen SP dozens of times, this was a special, special show 💜
After watching this concert I can really see why Billy likes playing with Jeff. Jeff can actually play the lead guitar parts quite well, so Billy doesn't have to drop out on his vocals. Jeff's keeping it real to his right and not hitting shitty pitchy notes like James Iha used to (I thought he was cool, but man he blew at guitar live). Anyway, they sound better then ever.
Some of the soul might be missing without the original members, but this Ocenia lineup was technically the best. They are more polished and crisp sounding.
imo Nicole Fiorentino was the best thing to happen to SP lineup since the original one. And I don't mean just technically, but also the creative/artistic/vibe/soul aspect... nearly as good as d'arcy (i know, people talk shit about her and her playing, but in my opinion and ears, corgan&melissa played bass technically well, but relatively boring too, when compared to d'arcy playing bass on mellon collie or even playing the same siamese songs live (if i ignore the ones where she probably had a bad day)
Since there are no members of the original line-up, I always thought that it would have been "honest" to present these concerts as "Billy Corgan in concert". That said, this performance remains very good.
werideatdusk Just saw them a few days ago in Chicago. They put on a great show, and Jimmy Chamberlain was drumming which made it even better than this tour. Awesome set-list too.
Love Billy's talent, and output, but I feel (not just this situation, it's a pattern in some rock bands) that it's disrespectful to the other members of Smashing Pumpkins to call this project 'Smashing Pumpkins'. Call it anything else. Noel wrote all the important Oasis songs, and he doesn't tour as Oasis. It's a shame the band dissolved, but it did. Keep rocking Billy, but change the name.
KeepItSmooth You are right but unfortunately Billy is still performing as Smashing Pumpkins in 2015. Obviously he was an important part of SP but he isn't on his own Smashing Pumpkins. D'arcy, James and Jimmy did add to the band and whatever bad blood there is between Billy and them he is delusional to think he can just recreate SP with different people. He should let SP go and form a new band. But some people seem to really like it so maybe I'm just jaded being a fan of the original band.
My favourite band since i was a high school kid 20 yrs ago but never had an opportunity to see them live. I just feel that that the Pumpkins were at their peak when they released Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. All the Lyrics you hear after this album are just lame even though Billy is a great poet, he just never reached his true potential. Love the Pumpkins unconditionally all the same!!!!
I would encourage you to check out machina too. I think from a live standpoint, given the choice, I would either see them live now or in 2000 on the machina tour. Machina would've been another mellon collie, had Billy not used D'arcy leaving as an excuse to scrap a lot of the concept of the album. It's freaking epic, and their best album sonically, neck in neck with Mellon collie. So really, they're tied in my mind.
They sound like a proper band now....and not a bunch of ropey hired hands. Dunno why it surprised me? I suppose it was prejudice....one either gets over it or invests no more time in what it is now. The new album is good....Billy still has plenty left in the tank.
Something happened side stage, guitar fell or something. Nicole looked over first, Mike was looking too. Billy was annoyed with something before the show even began, so whatever happened side stage pissed him off more. He seemed grouchy all night.
no offense to JImmy, but when Jimmy plays they seem to be playing quicker - this kids got him down, let alone better tempo - not jimmys chops at all, but this kid is damn good.
Concerts seem so boring anymore. "Stand in your 1' square and respect my 1' square and we'll all go home happy and talk about the energy of the crowd". Good luck with that technique when SD and MC were huge.
Man it gets sadder every year he actually tried to pass these kids off as "Smashing Pumpkins." Byrne in for Chamberlin...Billy is literally fronting a HS Pumpkins cover band.
Every touring member of The Pumpkins is great. This era was technically polished is every way and they put on some killer shows, but thanks for your opinion. You can go back to reading Alternative Nation articles now.
Billy Corgan is the Smashing Pumpkins. Yeah Jimmy isn't there(the only missing element), but Corgan has virtually written all the songs in their career.

I feel bad because I totally took this lineup for granted. And the Oceania album is even better than the reunion album of the classic lineup
