The English Mentlegen why would a Netflix series be worse than the film? The film was great, but as films go, you know, being tops 2 and a half hours it has to cramp up a lot of shit. Most things that made me love the comics weren't even in the movie, and that's understandable, because it's a movie. But a TV show with at least six episodes could touch on a lot of stuff the movie didn't. So why would a Netflix show be worse in your opinion? I'm curious.
Well, Edgar Wright is extremely good at using visual comedy in Scott Pilgrim, and as a result it has become a cult classic of sorts. Its pretty unique as films go too, which makes me enjoy it a lot more. Netflix originals really haven't been consistent in terms of quality, I mean, sometime they are great like house of cards and stranger things, but they also have a lot of awful shit that gets cancelled after the first episode. As well as this, it is unlikely that Netflix would care enough about such a small franchise to give scott pilgrim as large of a budget as the film.
Search "Make your transitions count" Its one of many video essays on the many unique things that the film does, they are usually things you miss on the first viewing, but they give the film a lot of character.
It’s a shame these stylized comic adaptation films didn’t catch on, I love this style in a world where everything is so dark and “ realistic “ Like this, kick ass, speed racer, Zombieland ( while not an adaptation of anything it had that stylized look I enjoy) I think the only film doing a more stylized look of color over darkness are the Deadpool films, Thor Ragnarok did an amazing job with that style too, and let’s not forget the guardians of the galaxy, though it does leaving me wanting so much more
I think wonder woman 1984 maybe one of these. Dr Strange movies are all magic and Sam Raimi is making Multiverse of Madness so it means it has to be colorful crazy shit
Not really superhero movies or whatever, but if you like this stylized kind of stuff, then I reccomend hot fuzz and baby driver. Edgar Wright is a master at this kind of stuff.
Taika waititi (from thor Ragnarok) to me really has brought that "indie stylized" vibe into popular mainstream. Every movie I have seen from him is ridiculous and bright yet grounded and dark, and we love that from him honestly lol
Making Ramona the exact opposite of Comic Ramona was a nice touch. She was so happy and open in the comics but serious and mysterious in the movie. Some people don’t like the difference but I think its great.
My gosh. It’s insane to me that most of the movie cast are the same people who played the same characters in the anime. That’s dedication anyone can respect
Got to appreciate how they were able to bring back most if not all the actors from the film, even though it’s been 13 years and many of the names have gotten big since.
In my opinion the movie sucked, but everyone I know whose seen the movie that liked it never read the comics. The one to one recreation is so boring and everything they changed was for the worse IMO
I wouldn't say every way. I think some things the movie did are way better (action scenes in the comics brought to life come across better in motion than in drawings, and some of the encounters with the exes are done better in the movie, like instead of Scott mentioning a deus ex machina he actually tricks Todd into breaking his veganism, the rock and roll kaiju fight with the twins, etc.)
@@birchtree6975 I made sure to avoid that by reading the comics and then watching the movie. This can sometimes benefit you but also detract, for example I decided to read about half the How to Train Your Dragon books before seeing the movie back when it was coming out 10 years ago and ended up disliking the movie as a result. Personally I think the 1:1 recreations of the comic panels and the references to it are great because they showed a great level of respect and passion for the source material, even down to recreating characters' costumes for each scene where appropriate and mostly casting actors who look about as close to the artstyle of the books as you can get. You don't really get that level of attention to detail in many adaptations, I think. And while not every change works there's some alterations that are handled pretty well. Seeing some of the panels in motion also made them a lot funnier and more entertaining than just the pictures were (which were already pretty funny at times) and the fact that a majority of the dialogue is ripped straight from the comic and still feels like it fits into the movie fine is nice. But I definitely get not liking the movie. I personally thought it was hilarious when I first watched it a couple weeks ago, loved the visuals, and thought the action was great, and it's honestly to the point that I'm thinking of watching it over again pretty soon due to just how much I love revisiting clips of it on YT and how much it blew me away visually, (something I honestly have never done with any other movie, even some I consider my all time favorites) but I will admit I was letdown in many areas. Like the time frame for the movie versus the books and just how much more shallow it ends up feeling due to this, and the omission of several characters and subplots due to time. Most of the female cast especially felt underused and underdeveloped in the film versus the books. But as is, I think it's probably one of the best comic book adaptations ever made in my opinion, up there with the 1990 TMNT movie.
i think it was so people in the audience would think that his relationship with knives didn’t had such an age gap?? wasn’t knives 17? i mean maybe a 22 year old with a 17 year old is not as weird as 17 with 23 i guess

Also, not sure if it was archived online anywhere and don't remember what year it was, but ages ago before the movie came out, I got a Free Comic Book Day exclusive Scott Pilgrim comic!
@@SilverSphereSorcerer I gotta see that free comic book day comic. I like the Romana ending better too, I understand how it kind of toxic they end up together and some people wanted Knives. Maybe I'm just hella attracted to Mary but I know I not alone in that lol. Michael Cera is the perfect scott pilgrim in my eyes too. I honestly can't think of another actor who fits the comic mold, he's a little more confident in the comics and less anxious and like lowkey badass? but I kind of like the extreme anxiety of Scott in the movies and the way he was played, plus Michael Cera is Canadian like Scott unlike most of the people in the movie and that's a win in my books lol
Thanks! I've thought about making more, problem is is that after this point in the movie, it starts lining up with the comic less and less. That being said, that doesn't mean it would be impossible for me to make more. I'm glad that you like it!
Hooper J. Cooper You're welcome! We need more heroes like you. :) Nobody is doing it, except for _this_ video (sound from the movie, not music playing like another video) which sucks because I honestly love Scott Pilgrim VS. the World and want to see more 'comparisons'. But if in any point you consider doing it again, I'll be here waiting. :P You got yourself a subscriber.
Even though, they added some lines here and there, the scenes literally feel like a shot-for-shot adaption of everything in the comic. It's like an anime getting everything in the manga right without adding excessive fillers and random characters that weren't in the manga from day 1.
Fun fact: The director told the actors to try not to blink to make it look more like a comic- there's only a few times in the movie that you can catch someone blinking!
I think graphic novels make for some of the most interesting film adaptations because the visuals are already there. It’s a matter of what the director makes of them, so there will always be the visual equivalent. Persepolis, for example, keeps the visual style, shortens many plot elements, and also gives certain characters more development and visual uniqueness. I consider it and the comic it’s based on to be of equal value, because each does something the other doesn’t while respecting the style of story being told.
I read volume one of the Color Collection for the first time last week. I’ve only watched the movie twice, but I was shocked to realize-the wrong way ‘round-that it’s probably the most comics-accurate movie ever. I love that they filmed at the real-world locations O’Malley used for his artwork!
The fucking comedic comic series about a 23 year old dude dating a 17 and another 23 year old girl has better fight scenes than any page of the demon slayer manga can ever fucking have
It's weird how Scott in the movie os like "im silly and clumsy" and from nowhere "BAM! BEST FIGHTER IN THE TOWN" It's kinda weird, it doesn't seems right with the movie character.
I was in class once and over some kid's shoulder i saw the page where he's in the desert. I never saw the title. A few months later I watched this movie and got to that scene and I instantly remembered the one page I saw. That's a good adaptation.
I always found it interesting how Scott in the comics seems way more assertive and confident, and I think thats solely in the way he’s drawn. Meanwhile, Michael Cera’s performance makes him seem more naive. Whats cool is that both of those personalities, no matter what, feeds into Scott being an asshole. Great work from Edgar Wright and Michael Cera on that front;
Scott's character in the film was incredibely different from the comic, but it wasn't a negative. I really liked the take the movie had on Scott. I just wish there could be an animated version of the Scott Pilgrim comic with the early Vol. 1 art style.
Was 12 years old when I first saw this movie and I thought it was amazing, about to be 22 and it still rocks. Took a small look at the actual comic and I'm surprised that they managed to adapt it this well.
It’s always been a theory to me that Scott was never physically fighting anyone, but rather fighting Ramona’s insecurities and baggage from past relationships. Hence the fact she never really talks about her exes until a fight happens. Which also kinda explains why they “respawn” bc insecurities naturally comeback and anybody with a gf knows she needs validation
Not to mention that some of the fighting is clearly taking place in Scott’s mind considering that no one else sees most of the things that he does. I think it was even stated that all the video game references towards fighting scenes in general are meant to just be Scott’s take on the world and not necessarily what’s actually happening.
@@cyclops8238 yeah it was confirmed that the video game references and fights were all just Scott’s perspective on how he understands himself and the world around him. Which also played a part in my theory because he was never actually doing those things but probably rather dealing with Ramona’s baggage like a normal couple: 🌈communicaaaation🌈
@@HexAddams I think that is the symbolism, but I would rather believe that all the fights are real because them being inside Scott's head the whole time would make it less fun
As much as I love this movie, I can't help but feel it pales in comparison to the comic, mainly due to Michael Cera playing Scott as way more of an awkward loser than I feel he was in the comic - I mean he was still a loser, but he had this sort of snarky, sarcastic charm to him, and was more of a loser/slacker prick than the awkward geeky guy that Michael Cera plays. It's not a BAD performance at all, but compared to the Scott Pilgrim in the comic, who just has this sarcastic wit and almost pride in being a loser, I feel the movie doesn't give as great a character. Plus, Ramona Flowers is played to be emo, which isn't her character at all in the comics (in fact, since I saw the movie before reading the comic, I was super thrown off by how she was in the comics; more of a laid back skater chick whose more nonchalant and chill than emo or deadpan).
REMEMBER The movie was written after the first book, there are very little similarities after VOL 2 for that reason. After that the books are slightly working off the movie so you may see a few similar scenes in the book for that reason
Never seen this movie(or read the comic) but damn I love the art style in the comics. It’s just the right spot between cartoony and consistent, simple and complex, and the video game motif is really good.
2:47 Wallace: It’s Not Race Guys! Crash: Alright, THIS SONG IS FOR THE GUY WHO KEEPS YELLING FROM THE BALCONY, IT'S CALLED "WE HATE YOU, PLEASE DIE." Wallace: Sweet! Love This One.
Notice in the fight scene between Mathew Patel and Scott Pilgrim in both the movie and comic, Scott is wearing a Plumtrees shirt. Plumtrees made a song titled Scott Pilgrim, that Bryan Lee O'Malley listed as part of the inspiration for Scott Pilgrim, as well as many other songs and mangas.
I always thought Ramona and Kumatora looked similar lol. Ramona in book 2 looks especially like Kumatora. Although Ramona came into existence before Kumatora so it’s Kuma who looks like Rammy.
I really wish they kept “The glow” when they made the movie, it would’ve made the fight with Gideon a lot more intense. I also wish they kept subspace, but honestly the movie is really good. Mary Elizabeth Winstead played Ramona so well, and for some reason Micheal Cera just fits Scott perfectly, like you can even hear Micheal Cera’s voice when you reread the novels it’s kind of scary, but yeah! I love Scott pilgrim books and movie and all, I’m pretty excited about the Series theyre planning on making.
One thing to note about this comparison is that it glossed over this important detail: In the movie Scott tosses something at Matt, thereby taking him out himself. In the comics they make the power of friendship power pose, which IMO is one of the few faux pas the movie fixes. Afterall, Scott is oblivious to how dysfunctional his little circle is, and the comic actually kind of misdirects from that story detail by making them all have a "power of friendship" ability that they took out in the movie in favor of Scott doing it himself.
i think i read once that the team was fine with mary elizabeth winstead reading their names from a sheet of paper but she ended up memorising and reciting them anyway

I think it turned out way better than trying to squeeze every little plot point into three long, drawn out films with lore like The Hobbit or some shit.
1:48 the part where she names all the tea is oddly satisfying
I appreciate that the wardrobe department actually got everyone in the same clothes as in the comic. Like, it would be so easy to just have them in generic t-shirts or whatever, but the shirts Scott and Neil were wearing matched what their comic counterparts had on.

why couldn't they just make a complete animated or better yet, a Netflix series out of this.... T.T
there is an animated one, and i think a netflix series probably would have been worse than the film, which is amazing
Search "Make your transitions count" Its one of many video essays on the many unique things that the film does, they are usually things you miss on the first viewing, but they give the film a lot of character.
agreed, that video really opened my eyes to how great the editing made this movie
this movie is sucha love letter
One of the most accurate comic book movies ever
Bro not all. Scott is so awkward here and Ramona is a depressed chick.
It’s a shame these stylized comic adaptation films didn’t catch on, I love this style in a world where everything is so dark and “ realistic “
Like this, kick ass, speed racer, Zombieland ( while not an adaptation of anything it had that stylized look I enjoy)
I think the only film doing a more stylized look of color over darkness are the Deadpool films, Thor Ragnarok did an amazing job with that style too, and let’s not forget the guardians of the galaxy, though it does leaving me wanting so much more
I think wonder woman 1984 maybe one of these. Dr Strange movies are all magic and Sam Raimi is making Multiverse of Madness so it means it has to be colorful crazy shit
Kick-ass was my favorite
Not really superhero movies or whatever, but if you like this stylized kind of stuff, then I reccomend hot fuzz and baby driver. Edgar Wright is a master at this kind of stuff.
Fresh Dark Dreams yeah I agree or even Shaun of the Dead
Taika waititi (from thor Ragnarok) to me really has brought that "indie stylized" vibe into popular mainstream. Every movie I have seen from him is ridiculous and bright yet grounded and dark, and we love that from him honestly lol
Making Ramona the exact opposite of Comic Ramona was a nice touch. She was so happy and open in the comics but serious and mysterious in the movie. Some people don’t like the difference but I think its great.
Knives was happy and open
My gosh. It’s insane to me that most of the movie cast are the same people who played the same characters in the anime. That’s dedication anyone can respect
Got to appreciate how they were able to bring back most if not all the actors from the film, even though it’s been 13 years and many of the names have gotten big since.
It’s weird, I think the comics are totally superior in every way. But the film did introduce me to the comics so I should thank it for that.
In my opinion the movie sucked, but everyone I know whose seen the movie that liked it never read the comics. The one to one recreation is so boring and everything they changed was for the worse IMO
The scene transitions are cool though.
Liked the music.

I mean, they changed the personalities of the main two characters. Kinda feels like a drastic change.
Fun fact: The director told the actors to try not to blink to make it look more like a comic- there's only a few times in the movie that you can catch someone blinking!
Edgar Wright literally shows how much he's a fan of the comic.

They really did a good job of casting baby-faced actors to fit the artstyle
Ramona was a lot less cold in the comics
I read volume one of the Color Collection for the first time last week. I’ve only watched the movie twice, but I was shocked to realize-the wrong way ‘round-that it’s probably the most comics-accurate movie ever. I love that they filmed at the real-world locations O’Malley used for his artwork!

It's weird how Scott in the movie os like "im silly and clumsy" and from nowhere "BAM! BEST FIGHTER IN THE TOWN"
It's kinda weird, it doesn't seems right with the movie character.
That was the point if I remember correctly basically it was to catch the audience off guard since most of them probably didn't read the graphic novels
This is one of my favorite movies it never gets old.
It's uncanny how similar the actors are to the comics
I was in class once and over some kid's shoulder i saw the page where he's in the desert. I never saw the title. A few months later I watched this movie and got to that scene and I instantly remembered the one page I saw. That's a good adaptation.
I love how in the comic crash and the boys help Scott fight but in the movie they just fucking die in a fiery blaze
I always found it interesting how Scott in the comics seems way more assertive and confident, and I think thats solely in the way he’s drawn. Meanwhile, Michael Cera’s performance makes him seem more naive. Whats cool is that both of those personalities, no matter what, feeds into Scott being an asshole. Great work from Edgar Wright and Michael Cera on that front;
When I first saw this movie (felt like no time ago) Scott was way older than me. Now I’m a month from 27. What is time??!

Woah.
Which also played a part in my theory because he was never actually doing those things but probably rather dealing with Ramona’s baggage like a normal couple:
🌈communicaaaation🌈

Sometimes in the movie you can see Ramona scratching the back of her neck where Gideon’s chip is, so that’s probably the equivalent in the movie.
My mom bought a DVD of that movie. I was a child back then, now that I'm a bit old I watched it again and the movie is still enjoyable.
