  • Documenting our shop’s first Cummins N14 engine swap on truck #8.
    I was not involved in the whole process of the engine swap from mechanical 855ci big cam 400 to electronic N14, but I tried to document what I could during the change over 2 weeks time.
    This video walks you through the involved diagnosis, rationale behind swapping to electronic, the fabrication involved, & what donor trucks we used in the process.
    You’ll also see the initial startup, first test drive, loud straight pipe driving with Jake brakes, and the engine’s first load to haul.

    The red head cummins is the pick of them. Not that I have any complaints about the 3406 B or E. I do love a 2 stroke detroit but only to hear it drive past.

    This exactly what I did. I have a 91 KW T800 and it came with a Big Cam 350 Cummins. I did a complete Overhaul and it would still leak all over the place and overheat. Now I have a 91 N14 and boy you can definitely feel a huge difference 💪🏼

    An N14 is one of the best motors you could possibly put in that thing. Cheap parts and great power and fuel economy. A 60 series is almost as good but nothing beats that Cummins torque.

    • @jacob2483
      @jacob2483 2 года назад +4

      I love the N14 and the celect plus! Series 60 is good but they don’t last nearly as long. Also, to me series 60 sounds, some of the cats, but nothing beats the sound of a Cummins. Even the IsX or X15 deleted sound so good.

      @@jacob2483 you’ve got it the wrong way around , a series 60 will far outlast an N14. While not as much power I personally think they sound really good, maybe even the best.

    • @jacob2483
      @jacob2483 2 года назад +4

      @@keyboard101101 Maybe I am wrong; I just know we had a 12.7 that didn’t last super long, and heard that from a mechanic as well. However, I would say that ultimately an engines lifespan is only as good as the operator and maintenance treating it properly. I like a lot of engines, I slip seat with our company trucks, we have a few N14s, a couple isx, one 12.7 Detroit with a 500, and a pete I’m working on with a c-12 cat. So I’m really not super partial to a brand, on anything, whoever does it best, give me the best I can get. I love driving the 60 series and it’s great on mpg and you’re right they sound good. My favorite sounding engine though would have to be a straight piped isx or x15 Cummins at least IMO. On many of the new trucks though they are running Cummins, so if I was to be an OTR driver, and had a choice or just owned my own truck I’d go with Cummins because finding a mechanic and parts is probably going to be easier than finding a good mechanic to work on a Detroit or CAT.

      @@qsk2348 yeah I only know this because I watched high strung vlogs “Dakota” and I must say his truck is the best I have ever heard. I didn’t realize the sound of the isx on our trucks because they are muffled, actually still sound good, but once you get the True Tone of the engine with a straight pipe, ah music to my ears. The 3406, n14, my c12, series 60 sound great no doubt. However, I just absolutely love that deep isx/x15 sound.

    I did quite a few of these 25 years ago. I put Celect+ Cummins in 1980's International 9300's. In 1996 International used what they called an overlay harness to transition from Celect to Celectrt+. This took care of the electronics. I still have two of the converted ones sitting in the back lot in case I ever want to do another conversion. We are currently installing Celect+ in trucks I buy with owrn out ISX. The engine mounts are the same on an N14 and an ISX. I use the radiator for a 2003 International or earlier that had No EGR. The EGR radiator is about 6" taller so we put a spacer under theold radiator mounts to raise it up to where the fan is in the right position in the shroud. I can buy Internationals with a hole in the block or oil in coolant ISX for almost nothing. It is much cheaper to install a rebuilt N14 than rebuild an ISX and my seasoned drivers like the N14s.

    Sounds great and that's a great truck! As a former Service Manager for a fleet of mainly N14's back in the late-nineties, my one caution would be to make sure you keep close watch over the SCA level in the coolant and add your additives. It's a great motor, but you certainly don't want your liners to cavitate, and we did have that happen a couple of times!!

    • @gac914
      @gac914 2 года назад +1

      @@Freyes2017 The Fleetguard coolant filters we used and changed out during normal maintenance back then had a fresh "charge" of additive in the filter, and then you'd monitor between coolant filter changes what the additive strength was. The liquid supplemental additive is "DCA4." Cummins "Fleetguard" used to carry it, but I don't think they do any longer, although it's still available through 3rd party groups, (I believe Baldwin sells it.) Cummins used to also sell test strips (litmus-type strips,) that would measure the amount of additive to add, (as the additive would dissipate after running for a while, and you'd need to recharge it,) but we found the recommended level usually wasn't enough, and would add extra to keep the liners from cavitating. Try "Googling" DCA4 for results!
