I just saw Sam live in Seattle last night at a super small venue and he was so good. Goosebumps all night. He played a new song that he wrote about his dad who passed that he hasn't released. I can't wait for everyone to hear it! Can't wait for you to do Blind Eyed by him and Ren.
There's a very sweet story of how Ren and Sam met. Ren was done busking one day and on his way home when he saw a 16 -year-old kid busking but not drawing a crowd. He went up to him and said that the problem was that no one could really hear him. He told him he'd have much better luck with a guitar and mic. He offered to play for him, use his mic, and let him keep all the money they made. The beginning of a beautiful friendship between the two of them. Fantastic reaction!!! I knew you would appreciate Sam’s voice. They pair so well together. Ren is a great collaborator - he makes sure his partner truly shines. Sam’s career took off before Ren’s did and there was no jealousy, only love and appreciation. Blind Eyed, the song they wrote together, restored Ren’s hopes that he would still be able to pursue his dreams. Ren thought the years he lost due to his illness closed that door. Little did he know!! So the Ren x Sam duo is magical on so many levels. They love each other like brothers 💕
It fills me with some hope to see those two boys sitting right in front of 'the stage', listening to raw, real music, looking up to Ren and Sam as heroes. That was me 50 years ago. Music isn't dead, it's just waiting to be rediscovered!

I have been obsessed with Ren since I first saw Hi Ren about 1.75 years ago and am still awed by his talent for so many things. Even beyond his performing arts, which is beyond compare, I am awed at the way he is managing his career including the most creative Album promotion I’ve ever seen, all while battling disease and coping with ADHD, etc. And beyond his transparency, you know he’s a special human being simply by observing the love, loyalty and care of his friends, and longevity of both their friendships and working relationships. His and their whole story would make for a great, heartwarming miniseries. The way in which Sam T. and Ren met is a sweet story in itself. Someone even caught a little video of the first time they met and played together. Sam had been busking with no mic or accompaniment. Ren spotted him and offered the use of his mic, amp and accompaniment on guitar. In the video, you can watch little 16 yo Sam’s confidence building while 23 yo Ren sits behind him in his humble way just following Sam’s lead as a crowd began to form. Sam said he made more that day than ever before and was inspired to learn guitar.

If you hadn’t already realise when first encountering Chinchilla, Ren is a magnet for other talented artist. Understandable though. Who wouldn’t want to work with Ren if good enough to get the opportunity? Not only is Ren incredibly skilled in multiple ways, but he has a great ability to let others shine by complimenting what they do. No ego, just music. Sam definitely has that buttery smooth RnB voice. Personally though I prefer the raw and emotional qualities in Ren’s voice with all the perfect imperfections as well as the playfulness. Also his range is just stupid 😂 Ren breathes music. He not only lives for music, but is alive because music saved him. As he is now using it to save others ❤ Anyway I am still eagerly waiting for you to get to Crutch feat. Bibi for a different side of him 🐰🕳️
Sam is another Ren Friend who's solo work is well worth exploring. His song Lose It All is my favorite, but Time Will Fly is high up on the list as well. Ren and Sam created an original song together called Blind Eyed that took off online, and after that whenever they'd post where they're be busking, big crowds like this would show up. The MC Sessions version of Blind Eyed is by far the best for sound quality (but the other numerous versions are great for other reasons). HIGHLY recommend you check it out!

Ren discovered Sam singing acapella on the streets and invited him to use his mic and played for him. Sam was only 16. Sam has become famous in the UK in his own right. You should check out his solo work.
I love Sam and Ren together. I happen to think them performing Blinds Eyed(the "Music Crowns" sessions version) is one of the best songs ever. There is also a studio version with a video, but it sounds like a totally different song. There is ALSO a video of Blind Eyed performed by "Ren and Sam Tompkins vs Angry Car Park Attendant" that is both amazing and hilarious. While both are great versions, they have NOTHING on the Music Crowns version. So damn good.
The angry car park attendant may be one of their best songs even though it was all a live one take and Ren broke a string half way through. It's great!

They power through and it's musically fantastic. Ren has an Angry Car Park Attendant plushie in his merch store. Sam's video for "Time Will Fly" is both a great song and includes some footage of him growing up that includes footage of the day Ren saw a kid busking alone and offered to sit in - the start of a long time friendship and collaboration. Another of my favorites is Sam's "Lose It All (Live)" - just Sam and a pianist in a warehouse. His song "Hero" is already heart wrenching, but there are two versions I recommend - the official video is great and maybe should be seen before seeing "Hero (Live from Hammersmith Apollo)". If the first one doesn't leave you in tears, I assure you, the second one will.

Ren rolled up on Sam singing in Brighton on his own, no mic, no amp. Ren offered his mic and amp and a friendship was born. Sam has opened for Justin Bieber and some other acts. The Ren Sam dynamic duo is a joy to behold. Blind Eyed is a treat. Can't wait until you uncover that one.
Sam is absolutely amazing. Not necessarily my type of music, but his voice is just beyond. Keep listening to a Ren, and you will keep finding new artists to love.

Interesting to know, Ren talks about using "flow state" when performing which is obvious here (watch when he closes his eyes while playing, etc.) But also, this particular time period is when he had just gotten a second chance at life and music which he never thought would happen again. You took my advice and played this video; I knew you would love it. My other recommendations for Sam and Ren is "Blind Eye" the MC Sessions (I like this one over the live version) I think there would be more to analyze vocally than the street busking one. For Sam by himself, I think you would love "Lose it All" (live). Just him and a piano player. Enjoy.

It is a song he wrote during a time he was severely sick you can see bc how he looks, but the song was ask4d to be in a movie which it is. Oh this song is one of my favorites. Was this was around the time when he made the video blog when he was so thin, frail and in tears .. it makes me cry every time.. it hurts my heart seeing him so sick, vulnerable and frail. Makes me wish I could hug that baby Ren and comfort him. ❤❤
I originally saw him play this in the documentary he wrote it for and that was my first introduction to him. As someone who also exists (but doesn't really live) with an invisible auto-immune condition, the documentary felt so personal and I immediately went online to try to find out more about this young sick musician. Years later, as an incredible fan of Rens still, I cry absolutely every time I hear or watch this song. Even after dozens of times experiencing it. He really is something else isn't he. ❤

Hi Tim, I just found your channel today through your Chappell Roan reactions and I absolutely love your breakdown videos. I've been binging them for the last few hours and am learning so much about how to listen for and appreciate different types of vocal technique and color. I also love that it's very apparent that you're so passionate about singers (and all the other musicians) as human beings, that you highlight and celebrate everyone in the band and are genuinely enjoying the performance. My favorite song by Chappell is by far "California", I really gravitate to super emotional songs that can make me cry and feel all the feelings. On that note, I'd love if you could check out (and maybe do a reaction) to Jorgen Dahl Moe's cover of "Dancing in the Dark" by Springsteen that he performed on the Norwegian version of The Voice. Yaaaayyyyy! I love Ren and Sam together, and this performance is such a fun one. Ren always seems to enjoy letting whomever he's performing with truly shine, and this is a great example of that. Someone probably already commented this, but Ren was walking home one day and passed Sam, who was busking with no mike. Ren stopped and loaned Sam his mike, and then hung out to watch Sam have a lot more success that evening. Ren described hearing Sam's "angelic voice," and a great friendship was born! Ren and Sam have done a lot of amazing music together. Sam's album "Hi, My Name is Insecure" charted at number 8 when he released it in August this year. I'm sure Ren is so proud of him!

Sam's video for "Time Will Fly" is both a great song and includes some footage of him growing up that includes footage of the day Ren saw a kid busking alone and offered to sit in - the start of a long time friendship and collaboration.
Another of my favorites is Sam's "Lose It All (Live)" - just Sam and a pianist in a warehouse.
His song "Hero" is already heart wrenching, but there are two versions I recommend - the official video is great and maybe should be seen before seeing "Hero (Live from Hammersmith Apollo)". If the first one doesn't leave you in tears, I assure you, the second one will.

Ren rolled up on Sam singing in Brighton on his own, no mic, no amp. Ren offered his mic and amp and a friendship was born. Sam has opened for Justin Bieber and some other acts. The Ren Sam dynamic duo is a joy to behold. Blind Eyed is a treat. Can't wait until you uncover that one.
Sam is absolutely amazing. Not necessarily my type of music, but his voice is just beyond. Keep listening to a Ren, and you will keep finding new artists to love.
And on that note, I would love to see you react to Dirt Miller (not a previous Ren collab, but a Ren shoutout as an artist who deserves a much larger audience). I'll call him.... unusual. I think people either get him or don't and there might not be much in between... but I think he's great.

I think “Time will fly” by Sam Tompkins is my favorite, and you see a little footage of young Sam and Ren when they first met.
Interesting to know, Ren talks about using "flow state" when performing which is obvious here (watch when he closes his eyes while playing, etc.) But also, this particular time period is when he had just gotten a second chance at life and music which he never thought would happen again. So art for art's sake only is on full display here. ❤️❤️❤️
You took my advice and played this video; I knew you would love it. My other recommendations for Sam and Ren is "Blind Eye" the MC Sessions (I like this one over the live version) I think there would be more to analyze vocally than the street busking one. For Sam by himself, I think you would love "Lose it All" (live). Just him and a piano player. Enjoy.

If you want to see Ren being playful with his voice, you should check out "Ren ~ Spontaneous Stream Jam" on Hexenkind1's channel. Ren was livestreaming on twitch, and toward the end, he sang for a bit. It was unplanned, and organic. This video is an excerpt of just the singing portion. It's not quite 15 minutes long. Well worth a view.

It is a song he wrote during a time he was severely sick you can see bc how he looks, but the song was ask4d to be in a movie which it is. Anyway about 1 yr ago this man reached out to Ren and told him he was dying from lukemia and he wanted to play the song at his funeral but didn't know how to edit the beginning out and Ren did it all for him and sent it to him. 😢 Anyway here i am all teary eyed again about how Ren is such a beautiful soul.

Oh this song is one of my favorites. Was this was around the time when he made the video blog when he was so thin, frail and in tears .. it makes me cry every time.. it hurts my heart seeing him so sick, vulnerable and frail. Makes me wish I could hug that baby Ren and comfort him. ❤❤
I originally saw him play this in the documentary he wrote it for and that was my first introduction to him. As someone who also exists (but doesn't really live) with an invisible auto-immune condition, the documentary felt so personal and I immediately went online to try to find out more about this young sick musician. Years later, as an incredible fan of Rens still, I cry absolutely every time I hear or watch this song. Even after dozens of times experiencing it. He really is something else isn't he. ❤

Hi Tim, I just found your channel today through your Chappell Roan reactions and I absolutely love your breakdown videos. I've been binging them for the last few hours and am learning so much about how to listen for and appreciate different types of vocal technique and color. I also love that it's very apparent that you're so passionate about singers (and all the other musicians) as human beings, that you highlight and celebrate everyone in the band and are genuinely enjoying the performance. My favorite song by Chappell is by far "California", I really gravitate to super emotional songs that can make me cry and feel all the feelings. On that note, I'd love if you could check out (and maybe do a reaction) to Jorgen Dahl Moe's cover of "Dancing in the Dark" by Springsteen that he performed on the Norwegian version of The Voice. I agree that the next Ren and Sam to hear is Blind Eyed - Music Grounds version. For solo Sam I recommend Lose It All live - it’s crazy. And if you like looping I REALLY recommend reacting to Reggie Watts (very different but absolutely brilliant) a good place to start is his TED Talk.

Yaaaayyyyy! I love Ren and Sam together, and this performance is such a fun one. Ren always seems to enjoy letting whomever he's performing with truly shine, and this is a great example of that. Someone probably already commented this, but Ren was walking home one day and passed Sam, who was busking with no mike. Ren stopped and loaned Sam his mike, and then hung out to watch Sam have a lot more success that evening. Ren described hearing Sam's "angelic voice," and a great friendship was born! Ren and Sam have done a lot of amazing music together. Sam's album "Hi, My Name is Insecure" charted at number 8 when he released it in August this year. I'm sure Ren is so proud of him!
