      I'm with you. "Do you think I want to do this Violet?" Always gets me. That combined with the way he slaps his chest as he says it, makes me wince and kinda jolt. It's painful to hear.😢 Ren does this really well.

    I have watched a number of "Reactions" to this piece.... I must say that your breakdown and quick uptake of the theatricality and use of music shifts to move the story along... is top drawer. You got the technicality without ignoring the raw emotional value of the pieces. I have great respect for your coverage. Thank you.

    I missed the premiere 😫😫😫
    I was a Violet for too long. I also almost died! Ren's music, these Tales specifically, helped me get away from being Violet as I staggered out of my grave and said "Not like this. Never like this."
    It's a long road to recovery, but I'm on it. Thanks for the love, Tim. The reactions to the Tales have given me a lot of tools for healing, including the knowledge that it is never, ever, ever the abuse victim's fault for being abused, no matter what their abusers say
    Also, I saw you catch the off chance laugh in the background. That timing was incredible

    I’ve watched countless reactions to the Tales at this point and one thing I don’t remember anyone calling out is the change in accent or articulation he uses. An example would be at the beginning of Violet’s Tale with “London ci-iy, far from pri-iy,” where the Ts are a glottal stop instead, which is indicative of a London accent. That opening seems to be from her perspective with his eyes scanning the room in confusion. After the wind forward, the Ts in “London city, far from pretty” are articulated because that moment of perspective is coming from the doctor whose elocution would be different from a girl growing up in a council estate.

    I caught something on this listen at the very end where Violet is pleading with the doctor: "Please let my babies stay alive." The s at the start of "stay" disguises the fact that babies is plural and protects the dramatic reveal in the last line. Ren is a genius!

    • @rebeccaburnell9319
      @rebeccaburnell9319 2 месяца назад +35

      My preferred interpretation is that Violet DID say "let my baby stay alive" - that's how Ren writes it in the lyrics - because she hadn't had any prenatal care due to the violence in her relationship with Stevie, so she had no idea she was carrying twins.
      However, it does work so well either way!

    • @obsidianred9833

    Great reaction as always Tim - what a piece this is! Totally agree that it's so notable that Ren, someone who lyrically has the ability to say so much, also uses silence (and stillness) so effectively. This is particularly evident in Violet's Tale, with the way he lets the "I'm sure her mother knew" line hang with any music for a beat; how he stops walking and allows the camera to move away from him on the "you see Violet, she was pregnant" line and, my personal favourite, Ren moving from stumbling to regaining his balance right on the line " the doctor soon regained composure" - genius! While we are swept away by Ren's guitar skills, his acting ability and his storytelling, it's easy to forget the each part of the trilogy is a one-take. Who else can do all of this?

    • @kellyt5341
      @kellyt5341 2 месяца назад +12

      Nobody....how about in VT...he is playing a detailed part on the guitar, he is rapping, speaking poetry and singing while walking AND is looking at the camera as he is coming to a stop. His body is working on muscle memory, his guitar playing is using muscle memory on another section of the brain and then he is rapping/singing his words and concentrating on them because he needs to act the part and bring the specific emotion to that section. WoW.....he is a musical genius.

    The way I see the cell phone scene.... we have to remember that Screech is 14, just killed someone, and is looking for safety. He's freaking out. Ren does have a back story that alludes to the idea that his first buddy is hooking up with his girl, but to me it shows the REALNESS of the chaos trying to find way out of what he just did.

The sounds anchor the story to life in the present. There must be a pier nearby and a fishing boat or ferry came in, or there’s a processing plant and the gulls got lucky. I love Ren’s live videos. 72yo Ren-egade here. I've seen several reactions to this work but no one has analysed the scintillae of music and theatre that Ren employs the way you have. Nothing is accidental, everything is there for a reason. I remember the first time I heard this and found myself in total denial and grief, it was so real. I often wonder where music can go as it sometimes feels like an exhausted medium. Ren shows the way. I grew up through the era of rock opera and know the power of theatrical, musical storytelling. Imagine if you will, Screech just murdered Jenny one street over. 1st he turned to his friend who was not home, so now he turns to a girlfriend for support and she also is not available. Great reaction Tim - just a little surprised that you didn't highlight Ren's use of different acoustic environments in Violet's Tale. I always find it interesting/amusing that even the most pedantic of breakdown reactors shift through the Trilogy (and Hi Ren) from starting off with purely technical reactions to invariably ending on purely visceral/emotional ones - this, to my mind, is the highest compliment to Ren's art, that his message invariably transcends the medium he employs to share it, even though (in fact, because) that technique is exemplary.

Not sure if you caught the use of the knocking on the guitar in Screechs Tale (I'm sure you probably did but didn't mention it), or also after Violet is beaten, he reversed the hands of time scale to return to where he had taken us back in Violets tale, just masterful storytelling.

      Silence is magic, even really quick - It gets (oh so quickly) so quiet YOU CAN HEAR THE PIN DROP from the grenade in Animal Flow, for instance. Another cool example is in Right Here Right Now Retake when the brother knocks on the door lol

    This song really showcases his heritage being Welsh. They have such a long history of being amazing story tellers, and bards. They use to have festivals to celebrate and tell stories that still go on to this day. He amazes me with every song he does and how he's such a brilliant wordsmith.

    Tim!! Your reaction, analysis, and expertise is so appreciated. We always learn from you I’ve watched 1000 reactions to this but you bring a perspective and knowledgeable appreciation that is unmatched. I swear I could hear your heart pounding on that first run through of Violet’s Tale. I have said many times that Ren has brought us something we’ve never seen before. That is really hard to do in the entertainment business. Thank you so much for doing what you are doing. You’ve gotten me through some lonely nights and I’m always better for it.

    A couple of points in 'Violets Tale', when Ren is singing hauntingly (in the bed), looking around as if confused, he is portraying Violet waking up in the hospital confused; also, many reactors miss that at the foot of Violets bed is a sign that says, Violet, Bed 3. Also, at the end of Screeches Tale, Ren sings, "our story it (ends) right at the (start), 2 bodies lying one street apart" is an Easter Egg, relating to Violet giving birth to twins, "two twins, aligned side by side"; they were born on the same day, lying side by side (beginning), and died on the same day, lying one street apart (end).

      To your last point, it's an interesting use of bookends in Screech's Tale. "Our story it ends, right at the start." At the start flipping convention and then ending the tale with, "Our story it ends, right at the start."
      Flipping conventional ordering and mirror flipping the start like he did in the beginning.
      Another tidbit that is interesting. In Violet's Tale, the audio manipulation of Ren's acoustics mirrors Violet's situations. When she's trapped within the cycles of abuse, the camera is close, and the audio acoustics are closed in. As she "escapes" the cycle moving out at 16, we've moved out spatially introducing more acoustic reverb. And then back in close again as the abuse starts again. Intentional? Idk, but knowing Ren and Samuel's body of work, I'd say it must be.

    The Swedish translation of the play is called Tolvshillingsoperan (12 shilling opera). I did the role of Mrs. Peachum many years ago 😊 Fun but challenging with Kurt Weill.
    I also associate Jenny, with that character in the play, although I remember her as quite tough. James/Screech might have belonged to Macheath's gang, if his character had been in the play 🙂
    I experience Ren's work as a mix of the Twelve Shillings Opera and Alan-A-Dale telling stories with his lute in Robin Hood 😊

    Thank you Tim, one of the best artfully balanced and heartfelt reactions to this trilogy I have viewed for sometime. Ren's performance is outstanding and, often because of how this draws us in, the absolute genius of Sam Perry-Falvey, Ren's long time friend and videographer, is sometimes overlooked. Sam's brilliant work on focus, e.g. closeup on Ren's eyes at 'pinches the eyelids and folds them up' is just amazing camera work - particularly as these pieces are each a live one-take whilst on the move through alleys and a building. Also many miss the wee easter egg - the hospital bed Ren is on in the opening scene of Violets Tale: 'Bd 3 Violet', plus the 'guitar wind time forward again' at the transition after the beating scene. One of the top reactions for this one. Kudos. Kia kaha from NZ

    These are dark tales but oh so needed in order to shine light on the shadowy subject matter. I love how Ren is giving voices to Jenny and Violet. Neither of them speak during the horrific events they both endured during their tale (though Violet does plead for the doctor to save her baby).
    Too often victims of such dark acts are silent (Violet), or silenced by those that commit the acts, or silenced by wrongly self-inflicted guilt, shame or fear, or silenced by societal stigmas, or actually die in silence (Jenny and Violet afterwards).
    Ren is allowing them to be heard and giving a voice to Jenny and Violet and all those that suffer through real-world trauma and have lived through unimaginable darkness.
    They deserve to be heard and their voices matter.
    Wonderful breakdown, analysis and reaction to Ren’s dark, yet beautiful, masterpiece of a trilogy. It’s amazing to see how Ren’s work has inspired you and so many others, and how you’re likewise providing inspiration to those around you.
    Brilliant job 👏🏻 ❤️🍺

    I love that you listen to each part in full before going back to deep dive/react / it allows you to get the full experience of how the story breaks down. Too many reactors stop every 15 seconds on their first listen which I think means that they miss a big part of the beauty of the story telling. It was clearly designed to be listened to as a continuous flowing story.
    Keep up the good work! Money game trilogy soon??

    I just want to add that Jenny's Tale was first released as a digital download back in 2015. That is four years before he made the video for it, which was released just before Screech's Tale in 2019. And then, three years later, Violet's Tale was released in 2022. So it was not a pre-planned trilogy, but a story that evolved over seven years.
