    My own calibration (limited by my projector especially) was just the old tried and true - set color to zero and then dial in the contrast/brightness as well you can with a black and white image, without color it's easier to see those differences. Once that's done, start turning color back up until it starts looking "real" and not neon. That alone can probably get you somewhere pretty usable, albeit most likely not down to these numbers. But, achieving a pleasing image that's so-so vs a real scientific calibration is doable. But even as to this calibration - it's still your display, at the end of the day. If you feel you'd prefer a less precise image with more pop, the calibration police won't show up at your house with truncheons if you decide to tweak things to your liking. 😃

      Exactly.

    • @Antimonkat
      @Antimonkat 5 месяцев назад +2

      yeah you aren't losing total possible brightness but the brightness loss per color is surely more signifigantly in order to make it "right" I'd be curios what the nit loss on some of those post calibrated scenes were. Only loss 3 on the top end but i bet the average loss in most of the color and luminance values is signignatly larger. But the point is, it wasn't supposed to be that bright anyway, by raising up to make intentionally dimmer things brighter, you are compressing the dynamic range and givving you less variance from thigns that should be bright vs shouldn't, it looks cool but it isn't correct. When he talked about proper spacing that's kind of where it clicked for me, Like the default mode say puts 75% of the color content into maybe 40% of the display's cabality so more of the content is brighter most of the time, but then you have less dynamic range, less steps between max and min so there is less definitoin or finess to the spectrum. It's kind o flike upmixing a 5.1 audio track to atmos so more of your speakers are used more of the time, using more of your systems capabilities more often, but it's having to create content that doesn't and shouldn't exist, changign the balance of sound but using more of what you paid for.

    When I adjust a Tv or projector of mine, I do it in the dark. I like a natural looking picture, I’ve been fussy for many years now. There is no way of magically increasing native contrast, the 64000:1 is 10% sure an error, that a skilled calibrator should be critical about, and dig deeper into what went wrong. The MadVr Envy can not improve the projectors native capabilities, and the projector could have been calibrated the same without, using the High bright mode to a-b compare is the most silly thing i have ever seen is a calibration video, there most be some kind of marketing motives to do i that way.

    I think a lot of it is personal preference. Personally, I find vivid to be unwatchable (overblown) and calibrated to be the exact opposite (dark and green with funky skin tones).
    I personally prefer Sony Standard switched to Warm 1 color temp (you could do Warm 2) and then I change the color by +7. If I bought a new TV like an A95L, the first thing I would do is put it next to the old TV and color match it because that's a bigger change than OLED vs Mini LED imho. If I can't color match, I would literally hire a calibrator, not to calibrate the TV but to color match it.
    Also, the Ambient Light Sensor is an absolute must so that you can get balanced brightness throughout the day. Otherwise, it'll be too bright or too dim depending on the surroundings.

      There is no confirmation as to why the measurement observed was as high as it was. What we do know is that we have multiple profiles with that same black floor, the correct exposure settings and multipliers were used per the president of Colorimetry Research, JVC’s first units of these new projectors did occasionally have sticky irises but Michael and I tested for this and AT THE TIME WE TESTED, there was no evidence of a sticky iris. At least one other Calibrator had experienced this issue with an NZ900 he had calibrated. These are the facts as we know them.

    I have to be concerned now about what the performance would be with just the projector alone?! The picture might be properly accurate - but I sure do not like the overall result. Way to dark and $15-20 grand to boot plus the MADVR for another $5-7000? Yikes. How do you spell DISAPOINTMENT!

      That is a great question Adrian. When we moved into our home 17 years ago, the floorplan had a "media room." My wife and I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to have a dedicated home theater. It's not ideal, and it's certainly far from perfect. But I can assure you it brings INCREDIBLE joy to myself, my family and guests that we have over.
      I absolutely could use velvet on the walls, completely darken the hand crafted cabinet that my friend built, and lay a black rug on the floor. But perfection isn't what I'm chasing. We created a room that allows us to unwind after a long week. A room that allows us to escape reality when needed. And a place that puts a smile on our face every time we sit down to watch a movie.
      BTW, the light floor was installed 17 years ago when we moved into the home and was already laid before we found the home on the market.

It's always better to go with whats more pleasing to you not whats the more accurate. Its a fact that nearly all (over 90%) of the worlds population prefers an image with more pop, so much so that its baked into all of our phones and apps as well as human genetics e.g. why a baby responds to a woman with red lips. Don't forget that most content we watch we have no clue what the actual scene was supposed to look like, where we don't really perceive a problem unless it looks completely unnatural.

Hence the dynamic laser dimming. The goal is to get the colors to the right value's globally, then you can adjust and play with the overal brightness to bring back some of that impact. Kinda buried in this comment but I was surpzied hwo well brown looked , the guys face post cal, Brown is a VERY hard color to get to look right with light output vs light reflection. I find that I care more about it looking good than looking "realistic", much like when I'm editing photos I take. @@Youthman I believe that if your calibrator is using the color filter on the JVC that may be accounting for your brightness loss. The JVC Color Filter ends up with a 32% light loss when used. You can still have a calibrated picture without the color filter in place, it just means you get ~85% of DCI-P3 instead of 100% which you may only notice on a few scenes in colors. I would take the extra brightness over the few scenes the color filter may benefit you. YMMV.

      @@spizzy7996 It sounded liek they weren't using the filter, though it also sounds like you can, and likely did calibrate for both it in and out of place. I think it did dim some, I went in to more detail in another comment as to why and the pros and cons, but I also think it's very likely that, you just aren't getting a very accurate representation of the before and after without both images on same time side by side because of the camera. Even if they were side by side vs a/b the differnces in what we see on our displays through his camera and the file compression won't really track. That's probably obvious, and unavoidable. Just on it's face, we're looking at a calibrated image captured on a likely uncalibrated camera, run through editing sofware and whatever color work it's doing, plus likely a change in file formats, possibly more than once. And all that's before the very simple fact that camera sensors do not see light and colors the same way as our eyes, nor are they as good at adjusting. He probably had the exposure on the camera locked down, so it's "fair" and so one didn't clip/blow out the image going back and forth or have a lot of noise introduced, but I suspect after a few seconds their eyes properly adjusted to the new average picture leval and the images perceived brightness were a lot closer and not as jarring. I'll be the first to admit the post calibrated representation felt lifeless and dull by comparison, not a fan...right now. MadVR Envy gives you the ability to do highly accurate 1D and 3D luts which are theoretically much more accurate than what you can do with JVC alone. Also these luts are automatic so you basically just get everything setup, point the meter and Calman and Envy can then do everything automatically. Daniel was talking with Kris Deering and Sammy Prescott a few days ago as they are all good friends and they wanted to make sure the iris was not stuck, even though the indicator in the projection menu shows it open.
      So I did a test with Daniel on Facetime to see if the iris might have been partially closed. We turned on the projector, let it warm up for 20 min, took a measurement of a paused image. And then close the app all the way down, opened it all the way up, closed it all the way down and then all the way back up again.
      And we got the same exact measurement with the iris wide open before and after the test. I could also see the projector dimming each step of the aperture in the menu.

    this proves the JVC tone mapping is inferior to Sonys. JVC artificially adds way too much highlights especially to dark scenes whereas I bet your calibrated picture + mad VR is very similar to what the Sony projectors would display especially in dark scenes.

    It went from 90% there out of the box just needed a bit of tweaking to tone down the saturation in especially green. The demo scenes are designed to show the colors pop not to be real life accurate. The demos looked like a Windows XP commercial from the 90's. Myself personally I know what my eyes like and when something is off and needs a bit of adjustment to get perfect, as far as this calibration goes I am not a fan it just looks off and not right even though it is right on measurement and photography for movies it lacks luster.😊

      Well, we are seeing it through our own screens and its calibration, after it has been captured by a camera. It's also different when you're in the room with a giant screen and your eyes adjust. With RUclips you also get compression. Basically, when it comes to either audio or video conveyed via a RUclips video, the most it can do is give you some idea of the difference, not really an idea of how the end result is on site.

  • @kurthjmark7209
    @kurthjmark7209 5 месяцев назад +6

    This is a typical RUclips video misleading consumers, why do a/b comparison with a JVC in high bright mode to a calibrated Envy profile? why not just do a proper JVC calibration? And the calibrated image looks off on camera.
    How about the contrast measurements? Any calibrator knows that off the screen measurements is very unstable and can have huge errors, and the CR100 meter used is not a specially good low light meter, so the 60000:1 native contrast should ring a bell, and demand a proper off the lens measurement, and investigation into what went wrong, but doubt the calibrator knows how, and when he is at it he could document the 1-2-3-4-5% ire gamma tracking, and see if the envy got that right.
    Its not uncommon to see calibrators mess up display so they are worse than uncalibrated out of the box settings. So the word calibration holds no quality stamp or value these days.
    Try again.

    This video is deceitful. You don't gain contrast from calibration. You gain it by closing down the Iris, which causes significant brightness loss, so you have to crank laser power to compensate (assuming you have the headroom to do so).
