I make my own pressing mats in several different sizes. They have a plywood base, and a fairly firm surface as I just add a layer of batting on top. Then for a non skid surface, I cover them with white canvas cloth. If having extra heat from below is something that you really feel you need, add a layer of ironing board fabric under the canvas. I have a very large one for ironing backing and tops, much larger than any wool mat and it doesn't need any extra support. And they cost a lot less to make than the wool ones.

Since it's been a year and a half since you made this video, I thought I'd ask if you've come to enjoy the wool pressing mat or not. Or did you give it away or donate it? Or maybe someone told you to use a regular sized iron so that the increased heated area around the seams would make a difference? If you have come to enjoy it, would you recommend that brand? Thanks.

I have come to enjoy it. I think steam plays a factor in its performance. I don’t use steam so I am not seeing its full potential. I haven’t compared it to other brands so I can’t really say if the brand I have is better. It serves my purpose. :-). Thank you for watching and those are great questions.

@@aprilscraftroom - Thanks for responding to my questions. Re. using steam, I've others say that they find the wool pressing mats so helpful that now they do not have to use steam and yet get the same results of flatter seams as they did using steam on non-wool pressing surfaces.
