  • The Aussie Fisherman Greg, teaching a couple of rising sports stars about catching mudcrabs in the saltwater muddy mangrove creeks in Northqueensland. I like to go right up to the top of these little gullies on certain tides. I usually catch a lot crabs.I would have gone up a lot more, but the creek was blocked with mangroves. The boys pulled up the crabpot, and most of the time, the under size crabs and the fish get out of my crab pots because I have always had excluders. This flathead was still in the pot, so we released it.
We pull the crabpot into the boat upside down for two reasons. One so you can put the mullet heads in the pot straight away. Next is to get the crabs out of the pot without damaging them. This way, the crabs are sitting on the door, so you just unhook the door and lift one side and let the mudcrabs walk out. You don't want to be turning the pot over and stirring the crabs up. They will start biting each other. If you are an experienced crabbers. They probably won't do it this way. I am trying to teach people who are not experienced the safe way
The big mudcrab that was in the pot was empty. I know just by looking at them. When we catch an empty mudcrab, we release it so it can fill up. Watch some of my earlier videos, and you see how to check if the crab is full of meat. It takes around three years to get to that size, so for the sake of another three or four weeks, the mudcrab will be full of meat. So why not let them go.
The boys did most of the work that day, made it easy for me just driving the boat and tying the mudcrabs. They made it look easy marvellous what a small ege defence makes, haha.

Good work mate , i enjoy your work. Is it a rule to release bycatch ? or just for pros . A mate in Townsville reckons it is for everyone , I am 62 and never heard that before .
