  • This no bullshit video talks about an aggressive Mite treatment for bringing new sneaks into your existing collection that I have used for a few years now. I also discuss mite treatment in general with methods that I have used and a short initial talk on quarantine.

    Great video Jason. Really like how detailed you get about the process of aggressive mite treatment and other techniques as well. It's better to be safe about new snakes going in then having an out break on your collection .

    You mentioned using mite strips as a way to combat mite infestations. Curious on how exactly you use them, Do you just place them on a rack or in the individual cages and wait a 7 days? Appreciate any sort of help, currently dealing with a lizard with mites and a snake that may have IBD.
    EDIT: Just noticed you responded to another comment saying you just lay them on the rack. Will try that.

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles

    Hey brother, do you swish the water around after adding the dawn to make it soapy or do you just simply put the dawn in there?

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  9 месяцев назад +1

      I do, just to mix it up, but it doesn’t need to be soapy. The soap just break the surface tension of the water so the kites can’t float.

    Do the pest strips go on the outside of the enclosures or inside? Also are they the hot shot pest strips

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  6 лет назад +1

      lori murphy yes hot shot pest strips. I keep them sitting between the bins but you can put them right in the enclosure if it's a really bad case of mites.

      @@JasonsExoticReptiles is it for sure safe to use on the inside of the enclosure? Just had a sunglow motley shipped in and he has some mites in his scales. Just scared to death to kill my snake, and I'm seeing so much contradictory information on it.
      Right now I got a small square cut and taped to the outside of both my snakes enclosures the other doesn't have mites but I don't wanna risk it so I put some on the outside her her enclosure as well.

    Jason! So I have an adult Jungle Python that is relatively new and soaking in a big water bin non-stop. No visible mites, but definitely worried. My question is this, if you would be so awesome to give your opinion..
    He's in a 4x2x2 PVC enclosure, but the wood and large cork barks are secured to the enclosure with heavy-duty zip ties, so they are not easily removable. Would you recommend taking him out and doing the Dawn soak in a separate quarantine room for a good period of time and either baking or replacing the coco chips and leaving a test strip in there during that period he is out? I am wondering if the test strip will kill/sterilize anything that may be on the decorations, or if everything needs to be taken out and cleaned another way. I always value your opinion and would truly appreciate your approach on this. There is one other carpet python right under his enclosure in the exact same setup, so I could potentially run two separate bins with the soak in a separate room and nuke the other two cages with the strips at the same time. Thanks and Happy New Year bro!

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles
      @JasonsExoticReptiles  4 года назад

      That's a hard question because snakes will soak in their water for a lot of reasons. Sometimes it's too hot, other times it's not humid enough and sometimes it's just because that's where they want to be. It does seem like a lot of work if you don't see any mites but could prevent an outbreak if you think they could have them. That's a tough call without being there. It wouldn't necessarily hurt to do that but it also doesn't mean that you would get everything if they did have mites unless you were treating for a long time. I personally would let it play out and watch them closely but again, that's a tough call as I don't know your exact setup and how much of a pain it could be

      @@JasonsExoticReptiles I went vigilante and found what I didn't want to find. Have two bins set up with 85* water and the dawn soap going to do for about a week. Cages are being broken down today piece by piece, blasted with boiling water and reptile spray, then with only paper as the substrate. Any other preventative you would recommend. I watched yours and Kevin's videos and will never not do an extended quarantine ever again if I get another addition.

    • @wanik4
      @wanik4 4 года назад

      What's crazy is the other carpet never ever has soaked and there is nothing in his water bowl as afar as mites go. There were a few in the jungle which is how I found them. What are the chances only the one guy has them? Near impossible?

    • @JasonsExoticReptiles

      It would depend on how young but generally yes. I do this for all snakes at all size unless they are super new born like 1-2 weeks old. You just need to be very careful and make sure you don’t put too much water. It’s also a smaller snake so generally less mites and places for eggs so I would typically do for 1-2 days.

      Jennifer Menth - PaVel thank You! It's a little controversial because you are keeping the snake in water for a long period of time, but I can assure you it will not harm your animal and it will be much better off then if it had mites

      There are quite a few articles on the internet about "excessive soaking". The focus of said articles is on snakes doing it of their own free will in their enclosures and the negative forces that can motivate them to do it. The same topics come up repeatedly, mites, hiding spots, too cold, to hot, difficulty shedding, stress etc, there is nothing out there about why the actual soaking is bad for the animal. What possible problem could come from it, I cant think of or find anything about it.
