Taylor Made (actually the Creative Director who chose it) chose the photo that they chose not because of the specific year of the club model. Rather they chose it because of his stance in the amazing photo.
I know this because not only am I a creative Director who’s worked on a myriad of the largest ad campaigns on the planet, but also I’ve done a lot of work for the PGA and I know exactly how this is done. I’m the one that defines how marketing messages in the images are portrayed and I can guarantee with 100% servitude they chose that photo because that photo is an awesome photo. PERIOD.
You can’t hold them responsible for peoples inability to actually understand that it really doesn’t matter which club it is in their lineup under that specific name, the fact that he uses them all and plays that well should be a selling point enough.
We don’t worry about the lower wrong on the intellectual matter when it comes to marketing. We look for those people who actually want a solid product, maybe they can’t afford a new one and they see a professional playing with an old one, so they go out and buy a used one. That’s just as good for marketing for a company as selling a new product. Because the reality is, those who can afford new ones will pay them regardless.
A very easy marketing message to my clients is: don’t sell to the people who you already have as customers. That’s a separate part of the business. Work to the massive percentage of people who don’t have your product and you will sell more.
BTW Rick, as a creative Director, I have to say your logo is not befitting of your channel. Sorry.

Haven’t finished the episode yet, but quick thought about Cobra… have you noticed they kit out both the Bad Golfers, John and Alex, as well as Tubes and Ange? Is that what Cobra are aiming at perhaps? More the “everyday golfer” that has thousands of followers on social media as opposed to Tour Pros?

Long socks! had the same issue in South Africa many years ago. I hated them and kept pestering my father who was the club captain to change the rules to include tennis socks. Kept getting a no in response until reading through an ACTUAL Golf Digest magazine (this was early 1990's) that showed a picture of Jack Nicklaus wearing shorts and white tennis socks playing in a pro-am. Said to my Dad, if its good enough for Jack then its damn well good enough for a bunch of hackers and the committee adopted short socks thereafter

However, I feel you missed an opportunity, as a lot of the UK media including the TV crews did, in not even mentioning Bob MacIntyre's performance in the Open (and across all the 2021 Majors). Bob Mac has had a stellar year and is a super exciting UK prospect and FINISHED TIED 8TH!!!! His attitude is just so positive with him generally going for it, each and every time. Having gone OB on the 14th, he made an epic recovery. His final two rounds of 65 and 67 were superb and yet...not a mention on your podcast. I feel you owe him an apology.

After his round he went to go into the bar for a drink after his round dressed in his golfing gear trousers and polo shirt and shoes and was refused entry because he wasn’t wearing a sports jacket. Not sure what it’s like now but he has never played that open again.

  • @ytubepuppy
    @ytubepuppy 3 года назад

I had the misfortune of belonging to a club where a certain group of members (who were actually on the board of directors, and their friends) didn't want more members and set out to reduce the number of members we had. They started acting like they owned the club and everyone else was trespassing. Anyone not in "the group" faced open hostility on the course and they never played with anyone not in the group. Four members of "the group" would never play with an outsider because that would be a 5-some and too many, but they would play as a 6-some if two of their friends came along later and wanted to play.
Over time, participation in "men's night" dropped to 12 players (the group) plus three or four of us who fought them all the way. It was a small club with about 150 members and the first year of the purge membership dropped to 125, then 100, then 75 by the end of the 3rd year. I retired and moved away and somehow the club survived but I think "the group" lost power and were driven out.

Mini Drivers, in my opinion does have a market. I purchased the Original One last season; I played it for a spell and really liked it. However, I really bought it for my dad. He likes it visually because of liking older equipment, higher loft, and ability to play it off the deck (13*). It isn't a big market, but it does exist, for sure.

One of my local courses has a dress code that states, tops must have sleeves and shorts or trousers but no jeans on the course. To me that is a sensible rule. I played a course that I won't mention that had the long socks rule. In the spike bar I tried to order a drink and was flatly refused with no explanation, after the barman had served another couple of people I pushed him on why I couldn't get a drink and it turned out it was because I hadn't removed my cap.

Coming from the golf shop side of things, at least in 2018, Cobra is probably my favorite brand to have in a shop. They have great customer service, they work their tails off at demo days, they buyback unused product, and they are one of the more generous brands when it comes to taking care of the people in the shop. I’ll always consider gaming a cobra product because of how they are as a brand, not who they sponsor.

I didn’t see it as disrespectful. If they played the Open every year at St. Andrews it could be at least a discussion if talking to a Brit or European. I still maintain if they walked the grounds at Augusta they’d change their mind. Walk up the hill of 11 and see Amen Corner materialize in front of you. Heavy moment for a lifelong golfer. 👍🏻

Long socks don’t bother me. In fact, I’m supposed to wear compression socks, so a well designed pair stands out, while a solid black or white gives an ‘old man’ look. In the US, we are seeing a lot of tv ads for compression socks so seeing them everywhere is not shocking. As far as Augusta National is concerned, they are putting their best foot forward for the telecast. The grounds crew makes sure that everything is in order and looks the part of a most prestigious country club. A lot of how the course is built is to make this ‘look’ be the envy of all who see it. It’s not open very long for the members because it’s almost always having renovations for the following year’s Masters.

Here is how I rate the majors from most prestigious to least:
    1. The Open at St. Andrews
    2. The Masters
    3. The Open at any other course
    4. The U.S. Open
    5. The PGA Championship.
Although I'd rate them as equal in measuring greatness.

The Open for me as Best Major with Masters as very close second. Can’t beat classic British Links courses where the rough and bunkers are impossible to get out of. Masters absolute classic and love the tradition it has

Looked on the Krank website and they say their drivers are non-conforming. Also if you ever watch a long drive competition, see how many times their drives are out of play. With how Bryson is swinging it’s going to be really tough to engineer a driver that will be any different than Cobra. Like JT said “You’d think Mr. Physics would know that”

British Open isn’t very interesting if it’s not windy ass hell and raining sideways. Guys just fire at every pin. Those old Links courses aren’t very hard without bad weather

Rick, I think you should work with St. Andrews to get Tiger to the Open next year and you two should play the course backwards together.

By the way ... I'm so happy the dress code is very under discussion ... keep that up as it might be this ridiculousness might change. Representing a club in tournament or competition ... any functional clothing would go to my opinion. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 Metal band shirts would be my go to clothing of course.
Mailed the email address for a point/question/remark ...hope it will be picked up.
    Stay metal, Eric. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

I think the Open takes it as the best Major, most of the courses are accessible to the general player.
I spent 5 years living close to St. Andrews in the early 90’s and seem to recall not much of a dress code for the local municipal courses in Fife and the surrounding area.
How about a break 75 series at The Open regional qualifying courses.

I hate golf shirts so much I avoid any golf club that mandate them which makes me play almost only at Public golf courses.
I think people should be allowed to wear whatever they like as long as they're not provocative or offensive in any way. that would definitely make golf more accessible for a lot of people.
🤙🏼for you to talk about this!

Love both the Masters and The Open. On the down side, the TV coverage for the Open is terrible because it is difficult to see the ball in flight. Obviously, that is because of the camera work, however that has a negative impact for TV viewers like myself half way around the world.

I put a different shaft on my F9 so it doesn’t “suck “. Taylor Made’s mini driver seems more like a fad, use a 13.5 degree 3 wood instead of wasting $400 US on this. I like the Open for the variety of courses and more world flavor. I like the Masters because it’s just the one course but you never know who is going to do what.

To be fair, Americans don’t insist on calling our Open “THE Open” even though it’s historically a much more severe test and has just as grueling a qualifying process. Also a lot of thanks is due to Arnold Palmer for repopularizing The Open in the late 50s, as top pros had just about stopped bothering to make the trip at the time. I know The (British) Open is older (1860 vs 1895), but is that really an argument in the 2020s?

  • @chevy4x466

The best major of the year depends on the venue. The venue of the British open and us open were played at sub par venues this year. I think the pga was the best major venue this year. The at andrews opens is always special, as are the traditional northeast us opens and pebble beach. I think the British open and us open should have a tighter rotation, I don’t ever need to see royal george or chambers bay ever again

I'm not a dress code snob, but I do catch myself muttering under my breath about the goofballs showing up to the course in jeans and t-shirts. But, only if they're lining up every shot like they're Tiger trying to win the Masters. Dude, you're in jeans....just grip it and rip it 😂😂.

The Masters is difficult to get into, you can’t play the course, and it does look like they send swarms of people out onto the course daily to ensure it is pristine. They can jack with the greens through the air systems and for whatever good luck, they rarely have terrible weather.
The Open is open, you can usually play the course, the course is the course, and if there is no rain, there may not even be much grass, or it can be super lush, they can’t change the course except by distance, and it seems having good weather is a 30% proposition.
They both have tons of drama for good reasons though. Speith hits a ball by right 100 yards offline by trailers on the 13th, takes a stroke etc. wins the claret jug. Likewise on a relatively simple 150 yard par 3, unforced, he collapses in perfect conditions. Love them both.

Just on your point of saying you’ve heard more shouts of FORE recently. They’ve played in Ireland, Scotland, then the Open in England. I wonder if word got around that not shouting FORE over here is not the done thing.
