Talking about the old course vlogs, these are definitely my favourite videos. I started watching the channel around 2 or 3 years ago and loved them so much I've been back and watched all the older ones.

Keep doing what you do, you are a hell of an icon in the golf world and I hope you continue to do this for many many years to come!
Definitely enjoyed hearing you guys talking about starting a new channel. Now I feel on every video I need to have clever translations, graphics, mix audio, color grade video, and bring humor while teaching something, while in 2012 you could just talk a bit in cut and call it a day. It’s definitely true how now you have to really have to bring a new kind of ‘Value’ which is the tricky part but feel there is a market for more (especially when you look at other niches). Also feel you’re right you can’t do it for the wrong reasons, personally it’s a fun hobby. I’m just trying to combined it new fun hobbies. Hopefully maybe in a year or so I might make enough to buy new lenses or wedges haha.
Love the podcasts, to be fair these are the first podcasts I have listened to, never been into them before. The setup of these feels just like having a chat in the clubhouse before or after a round of golf with your mates, very relaxed and enjoyable. Keep it up
My two biggest reasons for why I love the channel are number one, as you touched on during the cast, you don’t cut out bad shots and present yourself as a perfect golfer. It is nice seeing a professional that hits bad shots, that can laugh at himself, that takes the ball as his lies if you will. My second reason, absolutely no disrespect intended, but Rick does not have a professional athlete build. You are a normal guy that makes the rest of us normal guys understand that we are capable
Doesn't the fact that Bryson is not winning every week (or hardly any weeks) show that there's more to golf that being the longest hitter? I think it makes it interesting to have a few people that can bomb it to show what can be done, while still showing us that shorter hitters can compete. I don't really see that they need to limit it that much.
@@rhysbevan5544 Yeah but the point is, while he's consistently one of the biggest hitters, he doesn't win everything. He wins occasionally. Did he actually win a major this season? Matsuyama, Mickleson, Rahm, Morikawa.
You are right about Bryson. But in general in last years (at least IMHO) the results go continuously lower. I don’t remember much round like -12 etc. I liked more when the winner was -5 and PAR was really the standard
Rather than golf courses having to buy more land to cope with longer drives, could they just put in more bunkers at them distances to give the advantage to the more accurate drivers?
But having well designed golf courses apparently is too much. The average public course I am sure already does not care but on tour apparently the millions of they make at a tournament is not enough to put in one of those " Bunkers ". But in the same breath that bunker will have to be designed in a way to not allow an easy out to the green. I like that after the 300 yard mark to narrow fairways and at the landings areas maybe cut the grain towards the tee boxes so if you are choosing to hit it that long there is a reward from the fairway but if you hit in the rough with the grain into you and if the rough is grown out for a tour player it would protect from an easy up and down for a tour pro. or any level of tour pro. Set the course up to reward accuracy like you mentioned while leaving the length approach as an option but if you miss on those 340 drives you get punished in some way unless you hit the fairway. Tough call really as it can be discussed all day. I do think the PGA should look at course set ups first other than just equipment as they already missed that boat.
@@sooneron I think when last I checked don't only 4% of golfers have under an 8 handicap... these courses get one maybe 2 pro tournaments a year on them, for the rest they are played on by the members who pay for the privilege. Why are we destroying that experience for the sake of an arms races amongst tour pros who use the course least?
The Vlog from last week was so good. Seeing you all make mistakes and still enjoy the game is huge for new (and old players) to see. I have stopped being so hard on myself and I enjoy golf so much more since finding this channel. Thanks!
Used to watch PGA coverage in the late 90’s. It was fun in the beginning, yet sucked out my good nite sleep. After some time it got really boring, cause every freaking approach was all over the flag and nobody never missed a putt at that time. ”These gyus are Good - PGA Tour” was the slogan and all mistakes or errant shots were deleted from the broadcasts. Some commentators told every now and then, that pros too make mistakes, but you did not really believed it till later, cause you never saw bad shots at that time.
Great show! What’s your guys thoughts on how to approach golf club pros on coming up with leagues etc to make being a member more fun. I’ve always thought a club should have some sort of 2-man team leagues playing once a week etc. If they fail to listen or take advice should one just leave and find another course to be a member at? I’m a member at a Golf Club here and pay $400 a month and there is absolutely no tournaments, leagues, or anything. That’s the only thing that really is disappointing about the place. What’s your suggestion on how to approach something like that?
The broom handle putter I think they only changed the way you hold or swing it, not the putter entirely. I use a broom handle putter and a belly putter still today at times. Bernard Langer plays one on the Champion Tour. It helped with my back issues after an ATVs wreck back in the day. I heard from a custom club making instructor at Maltby Golf that there is a rumor they are going to ban the arm lock putters. I totally agree with you on the new change rule with drivers. I used to hit a ball 300+, but a total shoulder reversal, renal failure and kidney transplant I have lost a boat load of distance over the last 7 years. Some of the rules they make hurt the weekend warrior golfers and or high handicappers. All my drivers are currently 46” to 47” in length. I still play persimmon at times also. Great video!
So I’m new to golf I’m 36 and I’ve only started trying it out about a month and l really like all the content that are provided on all Rick’s platforms!! In regards to driver length why not just have a driver rule that goes off a ratio of your height???
"I don't want to change anything about your gear because you hit the long ball well in the same way that I don't want anyone to be able to lay a garden hose across the green because I putt well" - my Dad
It would be helpful to some viewers if you gave a "table of contents" in the description so we could skip directly to the parts of the show we were most interested in. Thanks.
Probably a dumb question, but surprisingly I can't find a clear answer from a Google search. Is 48" the maximum length for just the shaft or for the entire club?
on the topic of making golf more appealing to new members, at my club a few years ago they ran barbeque golf evenings, it was a nine-hole scramble with random teams, and a barbeque after, it was a good bit of fun with a good opportunity to find new playing partners at a variety of skill levels. it made the game less intimidating as it wasn't competitive and there wasn't such a negative to playing poorly because it was a scramble. great bit of fun definitely suggested for new golfers
Courses just need to add more hazards between 300-350 yards on par 4 and par 5's for the PGA instead of adding length. Make the rough longer on that 50 yard stretch or dig out a new bunker or new water hazard, or plant some trees.
Guy….. Having the same dilemma with my P-770 Irons mate. I love the look of them and wanted them for about a year but I just don’t know if they work for me. It so hard to pay all that money and then just bench the irons though lol. Ironically enough, my backup set is also the Vapor Pro Combo’s 😆.
1:03:00 - NAILED IT. I've been saying the same thing for years. Companies might actually start making more money with bifurcation and amateurs could play whatever equipment they want nothing is stopping them.
Hi this might just be me, but I have tried to get a lesson on the fly or a fitting but it’s been so hard to come by unless I plan weeks in advance. It’s a bit frustrating in a sense of maybe me being selfish but have tried at a few clubs or ranges when I am there just popping in the shop and ask if there is a lesson or even a fitting going and well the answer is no, book in a few weeks and mostly that’s in the day so I need to take time off work. I say fitting and few different places as the shops only have a few brands so if I want to explore more brands I need multiple fittings. Maybe I will feel different in the winter but when I can play I rather want to play it’s just on a day when the friends can’t make it I might want to have a lesson but none is available. Is it like that everywhere?
Worst thing I ever did was take lessons. I was a 5 handicap and wanted to be able to hit a controlled draw instead of a fade, so I took 5 hours of lessons strung out over a 3 week period and got where I could hit a draw, mostly on demand. Somewhere along the way, things fell apart and I'm now a 20 handicap.
In my opinion you need to find a coach you can “click with” and who you feel is on your wavelength and understands what you want as well as being able to communicate what they need you to do… my advice would be to have a lesson with a few different people and see who you prefer to work with
I definitely agree, when I played hockey I had a few coaches and saw some gains but nothing crazy. However once I found one that I ‘clicked with’ I was get 10 folds the results out of my training. There is definitely train and coaching, and train and coaching with a purpose. Very big deal. Still need to find that one myself for golf now haha.
I don’t think you can roll things back now that we have it. A solution could just be to tighten up areas where these long hitters are landing their drives. Create more of a risk reward scenario.
Agree, because what’s next. Seems like a great way to start detouring people from wanting to play if they start to struggle after changes. Just grow the rough for the pros and make missing the fairway a huge pain.
Guy makes a good point about distance not being as important as putting. But it won’t come down to the best putter, it will come down to hits closer to the hole. Longer guys hit wedge into greens. Shorter guys hit 6/7 iron. So the wedge player will probably be closer to the hole more often. So he only has to be a good putter. But the guys hitting irons in will be further from the hole, so they have to be amazing putters.
Great vid again 2 reactions ... I had my "Metalheads Golf" channel already but with another name. When golf came in my life the rename was pretty spot on what it is. The added value in golf might be limited other then the journey of someone picking up this beautiful game at 50 years old and see what the limit is. The most important extra is that my channel might invite other Metalheads to consider this game and feel at home with the music that is played in the vids. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 The other remark on the shaft length restriction for driver. My average driving distance is around 200 meters and some. I think it is super cool that the top of the world is doing what they do. In the end ... they will cancel each other out and one cannot fall to much behind. Let it just develop and not restrict. Cool again guyz. Stay metal, Eric. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Think Ian Poulter had the best proposal for restricting distance on drives, minimum loft on the big dog. Allows room for big hitters but not technical manipulations.
In playoff Cantlay was hitting 6-7 iron on 18, and on 17 was hitting an 8. Bryson was hitting wedges. Definitely big advantage to him but Cantlay was able to win with putter. Not going to happen most times I bet.
A Longer driver actually benefits a more accuracy oriented player in helping them gain distance. A primarily distance oriented player may not have the accuracy to wield the 48 in driver accurately enough to game.
I'm 57, not a big guy (5'10", 150 lbs). When I was in my twenties I averaged around 240-250 off of the tee (with a Powerbilt laminated driver). I stopped playing for twenty years, started playing again four years ago and, with a new driver and new golf balls of course, now I average 260-270 yards. WTF? I'm not striking the ball any better than I was in my twenties I don't think, and I'm definitely not as strong as I was then. Modern clubs and balls have completely changed the game. Hey, I love driving the ball further, hitting the occasional drive in the 280s, and putting for eagles several times a year when it used to be once or twice in the prime of my life, but these modern, huge, incredibly forgiving high tech golf ball launchers we call drivers have turned the game into a completely different game. It will never happen because distance is the biggest selling point in the industry, but I would love to see a focus on rewarding precise ball striking rather than simply facilitating any joe with average swing speed or higher to bash the ball farther than the longest hitters on the tour in the 80s could. Smaller driver/wood head size, a limit on shaft length...good ball striking to get distance. I don't know what they can do about balls. Whatever it is, is hitting wedges into every green what we want in this game?
Isn’t it CPD points? Continued professional development. Same in tennis coaching. You have to have so many points per year to keep your accreditation/affiliation. Completely agree about trainee pro exactly the same thing in tennis too.
Pros used to play the B&Hedges at St Mellion but the course fell out of favour because they didn’t have easy recovery shots if they went wayward, Bryson plays to the rules & the way the courses are set he gets away with it & is brilliant but he wouldn’t stand a chance at St Mellion. Another great podcast boys 👍
For my five year old, I drive and hit irons into the greens, then I let him putt. Loves it. The other day he was on fire so it made him really excited to come back.
I agree with the seperate set of rules idea, pro’s should have tighter restrictions than the average “hacker.” Baseball for example the pros use wooden bats but in college and below they are allowed to use alluminum bats. This allows for inovations to still be made for the golf companies but the pros are restricted.
I get the kid that says Rick is his favourite golfer. Golf is getting better, but you just don't get to know the players. Football does a lot to connect with the fans and I think that is what Rick does really well.
I think regulating equipment is easily more sustainable than constantly redesigning and lengthening courses. I know hitting the ball longer makes the game more fun, but that fun stops when your local course doesn't have the economy or physical space to lengthen and redesign. Amateur driving distance won't force courses into that yet, but 30-40 years in the future it might. The 46 inch driver rule isn't that insane, it's a change that won't have an effect on many amateurs as most people don't play a 48 inch driver. That said, I'm not sure restricting the shaft length of the driver is the correct way to go. I'd think that in general, changing the ball is a better way to go than regulating clubs, as buying new balls is a much easier pill to swallow than buying new clubs.
Guy's right about golf clubs should try to get everything right. It always amazed me so many members would moan about bunkers but my course didn't prioritise them. Also... I've only ever played with one golfer using a broom handle putter in 30 years
About skipping holes; As an old hag, there is a pitfall in kids learning to skip holes, shen they grow up, at least in their teens. Allready slow play is an issue, and if people starts skipping holes on a real course it is gonna become a real mess out there. Taken some of the faster players are allready really arrogant and selfish there could become fist fights even.
What's funny to me is that the rules of golf don't really apply to the average golfer. Only if they're playing in sanctioned events and here in the U.S. that percentage is minuscule... MINUSCULE. I play by the rules and many do but I'd guess more don't based on just from what I've seen on golf courses. But to be honest, the rules don't need to apply as long as course etiquette is adhered to. For me, course etiquette is FAR more important than the rules of golf. I could care less how many golf clubs are in anyone's bag, nor do I care if they're using an 84-inch driver or anchoring they're putter on a chest harness!! As long as they play quickly, repair divots, rake bunkers, fix pitch marks and wave groups through if they cannot keep pace of play...
More simple than that Rick there should be pro sets of equipment for golf professionals that only they can get and another set for amateurs that have all the tech
I think the USGA are looking into it too much, making a static limitation like shaft length could potentially alienate certain individuals from the game, as you said Tall Paul is a potential example of that. Taking Bryson as an example seen as he’s the “biggest hitter”. How many events has he actually won since he stacked up, single figures I would guess and only 1 major. So is it really that big of an advantage?
I dumped Sky Sports years ago so see very little live golf. The most golf I now see is Rick. Your profile will be higher than any golfer outside of the top 10.
Hi Rick I got a message from someone who I think is posing (I think) as you? I'm not sure if it is you, but if it is I would like to carry on with the back and forth. If there's a way to get back with me to assure me either way that would be great. I'm a little concerned about where the conversation was going. Huge fan!
Honestly, there is a way to bring more finesse back in the game without equipment changes, but players would freak out. Tighten OB perameters on the course for tournament play. If you are offline...you are penalized for it in one capacity or another. I like seeing guys hit bombs, but what makes golf great to me is shotmaking. Its suppised to be hard. That's what makes it so great. Watching Cantlay stuff 6's and 7' close or phil in a bunker with a magic wand in hand...or watching Lydia knock a 5 wood stiff from distance will always be more exciting to me than drive, chip, putt repeat. Its the precision that needs to return to the game at that level which has little to do with the equipment. I dont believe there is a player today who could duplicate Jacks 1 iron, or be as good as Seve from a plugged lie even with the advantages of todays tech nevermind trying to do it with old VIP blades. Just an opinion.
Yeah. How about only steel shafts for 23 inch drivers for starters. Of course the big golf companies would not be able to make much money with that rule. I think that is the real reason the game has gone in this direction. You can make a lot more money with graphite shafts, high momentum large titanium driver heads and long golf balls.
In my experience, golf coaches can be like barbers. So busy just bouncing from lesson to lesson. They don't have the time to properly analyse, set goals and construct a solid plan to improve your game.
I wish I could join a club. No way I can afford that in the States though. Memberships here costs thousands of dollars for one person. For me and my wife would be 5 figures/year.
Golf courses need to toughen up,make the fairways not as fast less roll , make them narrower with bunkers in more strategic places, less free drops for the pro's they hit it up against the fence or over it .
Hell yes.....let's take ALL the fun out of the game. The rules committee have been doing that for at least 400 years. Let's make the fairways SO narrow that only a dead straight drive that deviates less than 10 feet will end up in less than 3 or 4 inches of grass. Maybe we can mandate leather-covered, feather-filled, or wooden balls too.
But arent the long drive drivers are using 48 inch shafts - r they trying to contain B Dechambeau??? This would be right because they should review the ball for the tourthe not add distance. But you get kids that are brought up as bombers and they will spoil the finesse of golf👎👎👎 Tony Finau bomber but then has had to learnt finesse non major winner but ????Got to love PM - he is spot on / on the money👍👍👍
Even when we play the same course we don't play the same course as the pros. Example. as a former member I've played Pinehurst 2 maybe 100 times. But NEVER even close to the US Open setup. Everything is different: Tee setups & angles, fairway & green length, fairway width, ruff height, green speed, sand depth and consistency I mean everything. That's why the close the course for nearly a year sometime to get it ready for the open. It's just not the same. SO while I Can play with a Prov1 and SIM driver and all the same clubs etc its never the same. So for 99.9% of the golfing world, we are already playing a different course so slightly modified rules or equipment for the pros vs joes is not a big deal its basically already occurring in the vastly different setups of the course.
I’m sorry, but Guy touching the mic just does not effect the viewing pleasure at all! People who have an issue with that i reckon have their own issues!

on the topic of making golf more appealing to new members, at my club a few years ago they ran barbeque golf evenings, it was a nine-hole scramble with random teams, and a barbeque after, it was a good bit of fun with a good opportunity to find new playing partners at a variety of skill levels. it made the game less intimidating as it wasn't competitive and there wasn't such a negative to playing poorly because it was a scramble. great bit of fun definitely suggested for new golfers
I would like that idea
Hard to make friends as an adult
We don't get bored, at least I don't. Do what you do, but longer videos are huge for me.
I play golf at a club in Bulgaria. Even the Bulgarians all know and watch Rick Shiels!
Got my ticket, can’t wait to see you, hopefully get some merchandise
Denny McCarthy has been the best putter on tour for a while
Great vid again 2 reactions ... 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
The other remark on the shaft length restriction for driver. My average driving distance is around 200 meters and some. I think it is super cool that the top of the world is doing what they do. In the end ... they will cancel each other out and one cannot fall to much behind. Let it just develop and not restrict.
Cool again guyz. Stay metal, Eric. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Funnily enough, I just watched a jetspeed driver review from 7 years ago, and commented how much Rick has grown in front of camera
can you put the link to the Mickelson video in the comments? Ta
Anyone got a timestamp for talking about switching coaches?
Rick, Guy, the red wallpaper on the desk, where did you get it!
It’s not wallpaper it’s 3D cladding
Think Ian Poulter had the best proposal for restricting distance on drives, minimum loft on the big dog. Allows room for big hitters but not technical manipulations.
Great show again lads must get back into golf. 20 year break🥲
In playoff Cantlay was hitting 6-7 iron on 18, and on 17 was hitting an 8. Bryson was hitting wedges. Definitely big advantage to him but Cantlay was able to win with putter. Not going to happen most times I bet.
I wish you spent more time on the new rule changes.Tbh I skipped through most of the video to find just that section.
I think There should be an entire Rick Shiels golf course with a full driving range and club house….👍
Stacked Golf also uses the clubs on the course and have small competitions
Well done reaching out to the kid champion!
Also... I've only ever played with one golfer using a broom handle putter in 30 years
Anyone got the timestamps?
Absolutely agree, if Ping re-released a new version of the Eye 2’s…
Would love to come but who's going to Manchester! C'mon, Bristol next.
I love that Rick just admitted that he has a vanity prompt through google 😂 honest to a fault
😂
If ping came out with modern eye2s I would buy two sets sight unseen tomorrow
This podcast was mostly about your podcast??
CPD - Continuing Professional Development
Would love timestamps :)
Fun podcast.
I dumped Sky Sports years ago so see very little live golf. The most golf I now see is Rick. Your profile will be higher than any golfer outside of the top 10.
I wanted to like the T100s irons but I hit them worse than any other iron I've ever owned.
Are you going to wear the headphones and speak into big mics for EP100 ?
CPD - Continuing Professional Development 💪👍🙂
Hi Rick
I got a message from someone who I think is posing (I think) as you?
I'm not sure if it is you, but if it is I would like to carry on with the back and forth. If there's a way to get back with me to assure me either way that would be great. I'm a little concerned about where the conversation was going.
Huge fan!
I like how Guy said the new irons don’t work for him yet he hasn’t even played a round of golf with them yet. That makes no sense.
Lmfao little Ricky comes out again
ALWAYS does hahaha
14.30 - wrong way round - we think oh Rick can hit a good shot in between the duffs and the yips...
Only joking - good stuff
Totally agree. My experience in trying to get lessons over the years (play off 15 but want to get better) isn't a good one.
But you get kids that are brought up as bombers and they will spoil the finesse of golf👎👎👎
Tony Finau bomber but then has had to learnt finesse non major winner but ????Got to love PM - he is spot on / on the money👍👍👍

You have plenty of Irish fans! Classy thing to do to ring that young lad who won in Ballyhaunis but horrific accent.
I’m sorry, but Guy touching the mic just does not effect the viewing pleasure at all! People who have an issue with that i reckon have their own issues!
Can someone be a hero and time stamp
I Agree
Holy adverts Batman. Completely spoilt the flow.
New clubs / fashions / themes - full circle with a twist
Eg music - covers / back in lay tracks with new lyrics / rapping over the top.
Quality is quality no matter how old - sometimes 🤔😉💪👍🙂 Rick S Peter F Matt F Andy C 🤣🤣🤣😉💪👍🙂
