      In all honesty putters are the most overpriced club. Is there really a difference between any modern putter be it $100 or $600?

    Because of you Mr. Shiels, I've learned to laugh at myself more. If I shank a shot I don't get so frustrated anymore. Watching your content and observing your personality along the way has rubbed off on me. I find myself enjoying the game of golf more nowadays.

    Those last three holes proved to me that professional golfers can properly strike and shape shots at will with nearly any equipment. They play at a level I simply cannot comprehend. Also, Mr. Shiels played amazingly well having never touched those sticks prior. Only took him a few holes to make adjustments. Great playing by both men and was very entertaining to watch.

    My Grandfather was junior champion at St Andrews. He born and bred there. His father was a caddie and carried for Jock Hutchinson as an Open winner. Both worked for Old Tom Morris as club makers. His record with Hickory clubs was 68. I have a dozen hickory clubs that he made. ST Andrews is a special special place. GREAT video.

      Well the old timers ended up actually carrying 30-40 clubs eventually, before the 14 club rule was introduced.

      ​@@madisspiegel When that was though was in 1915 up till the 14 club rule and mostly used before the iron or Steel shafts in all the clubs in the 1920's that were labeled often as a rustless metal as a true stainless steel or stainless iron was hard to find in the clubs was the the need with hickory to have replacements due to how the hickory shaft would break after time or on hard shots in rocky rough not earlier then 1910 due to mass production of golf clubs was not really yet a thing so getting the same club that the head and shaft would be rather similar in flight for spares was hard.

      Hic stx each have their own personal flex points. They are primitive sticks of nature adapted for primitive games. Finding the flex point is key to executing what shot you are trying 🎯. Each club was cut, cast, or forged with breakthroughs like dimples.
      That's y old masters would say "Golf is a stupid game played with inadequate tools".

      Sounds like a personal problem. Get lessons my friend. We always can improve with help but improving on our own is the greatest conundrum to playing golf.

If we buy balls can we return them if we didn't use all of them" never set foot on a golf course in their life, no etiquette no understanding. Its like skipping training wheels to a racing motorcycle. Doesnt work that way

    This is your best video hands down Rick, you had a great time and it showed. Jealous but at the same time happy you got to play the round this style and the cherry on top was using time period accurate equipment. Any golf enthusiast would've been over the moon with this opportunity and it's great to see you took the time to enjoy it. I'll be cheering for Min Woo Lee on the tour, what a great example of a class act.

    I recently played a course in Michigan called "The Loop" which replicates the originally intended layout of St. Andrews and even has the same grass seed used as those courses. It plays two ways every other day. Incredible.

According to the guy's in the next stall I have a natural draw shot. 2nd time in my life going to the driving range. I'm picking some Taylor Made Rs1's up tomorrow from one of the guy's we met and they want to take me practicing. 36 years old so maybe the technology is maxed out if I can do it lol. Wish me luck lol.

    Fantastic video! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if just one of the 4 majors was a hickory club major...... no more 7000 yard courses needed... it’s good for the environment... good for quicker golf rounds... just skill skill skill and great tempo golf swings .

    Been a huge fan from the very early days, and you can go back and easily pick out the top fan favorites from the channel, the battles with Pete and M&MG, the Dubai rounds with the young lads, the Turkey trips; the night golf series, the Orlando vlogs with The Hammer, playing in Santa outfits in freezing windy weather, I mean these are classic fan favorites. This video here though, now ranks at the top of the list, hands down number one pick! Thank you for this incredible experience to watch!

    This was a great video Rick, easily my favourite of all the vids. The amount of respect for the pioneers of golf playing with that equipment is off the charts! Min Woo Lee was a great sport and appreciated how difficult it was to even hit the ball cleanly with the old clubs.

      I have a set of blades from the 70s, and I think the same thing. Modern day blades look like game improvement comparatively lol. In a way it’s confidence inspiring 🤣

      And not just hickory clubs, those things go back to Old Tom Morris I think. I have hit balls with hickories from the 1920s. Very stingy sweet spot and a club or two less carry (and, do not hit into rough). They would probably feel like game improvement clubs to Rick after playing with those relics.

    Played my first hickory event last month - grew to love the mashie niblick, and the challenge of hitting each shot as pure as you can. Makes you think about how much modern clubs hide one’s frailties

      Definitely my number 1 bucket list trip. Even if i just get to walk it on a Sunday. But to play it would be a dream. Not sure i could stop my knees from shaking the entire round!!

    Rick, the "Gutty" ball you unveiled on the 16th tee is not filled with feathers. The feathery balls were used before the "Gutty" came along. Gutty is for Gutta Percha, which is the rubbery sap of the Sapodilla tree.

      Also he didn't mention that it's smaller than current balls - "The standard size golf ball today is 1.68 inches, but before the nineteen eighties, the minimum size was 1.62 inches."

      and the "play club" (a long nose driver in this case) a little mound of sand was used instead of a tee (which hadn't been thought of then).

      and Old Tom had a son with the same first name. He's the fellow who won the challenge belt outright in 1870 after winning it also in 1868 and 1869. You actually showed a picture of him at the start of your video; Young Tom Morris. Because Young Tom got to keep the challenge belt for winning it three times in a row, the next year they played for a claret jug of all things.

    I'd love to play the Old Lady reverse! Bottom line: this just shows how incredibly good players Vardon & Braid, Hagen & Jones and many others where. I sometimes wonder what they would've managed with modern clubs.
    PS: This vid 'explains' why some of the bunkers on the Old seem to be facing in odd directions when you play the course the 'regular' way.

    Love it! I am actually in the process of switching to hickory as my primary set. Right now, I am shooting the same with hickory as with modern and find the creativity needed with fewer clubs and different technology an amazing challenge and has increased my enjoyment of golf substantially! Great stuff
