But reaching out into the unknown has more meaning than just exploring shit you aren’t familiar with. It has very subtle undertones of “stop fearing every little thing you don’t understand you coward” . If you want to truly reach out into the unknown then start with the things that are right infront of your face that you have refused to “get to know” for the majority of your life. This world is way bigger than the precious little safe bubble you have convinced yourself that it is

Welcome into the TOOL's rabbit-hole and truly it is a journey. The title track, "Lateralus", incorporates the Fibonacci sequence. The theme of the song describes the desire of humans to explore and to expand for more knowledge and a deeper understanding of everything. The lyrics "spiral out" refer to this desire and also to the Fibonacci spiral, which is formed by creating and arranging squares for each number in the sequence's 1,1,2,3,5,8,... pattern, and drawing a curve that connects to two corners of each square. This would, allowed to continue onwards, theoretically create a never-ending and infinitely-expanding spiral. Related to this, the song's main theme features successive time signatures 9/8, 8/8, and 7/8. The number 987 is the sixteenth integer of the Fibonacci sequence.!! Please react to TOOL - Forty Six & 2...this one is an other turn in that rabbit-hole for sure.

Tool is usually classified as “prog metal” (complex and changeable time signatures with a heavy metal sound)…some say that Tool is in its own genre, rather like Pink Floyd. I tend toward that belief. Utterly original. One of the best bands of the last 30 odd years. Tool’s creative process is that the score is produced by the three musicians (drummer, bass and guitar) working out the arrangement, then handing it over to the lyricist (the vocalist Maynard James Keenan) to put his ideas to the music. Heavy on philosophy, spirituality, social commentary. Serious stuff. No love songs here. You do really need the lyrics before you, as the meaning is often the point. Tool music, like most prog rock and metal, requires pretty serious listening. Not for everybody….and even for those who love them, not all the time, IMO. They are just SO intense.

Tool is an entirely unique rabbit hole. You hit on several aspects simultaneously. They do take you on a journey (builds slowly into very intense prog metal). Dead right that it is primitive and tribal but also spiritual at the same time. There is so much going on musically and lyrically. Multiple listens are required.
This is older Tool (2001). Their most recent release “Fear Inoculum” (2019) is incredible. All of it great, “Pneuma” is a masterpiece in my opinion.

People always tell new listeners to stay away from the videos to TOOL songs. This is basically true for some songs but there are several songs that hit different and enhance your TOOL song experience when hearing the song and watching the video. The videos answer questions that all listeners have after hearing the song so as your are hearing the song you read explanations that help you understand the deep and complex meanings of the song and lyrics. Lateralus had a video that goes with this song that enhances the experience and explains what everybody is posting in the comments. Another song that 100% requires the video is Forty Six & Two. It keeps new listeners from looking at each other with that WTF look. Another song that 100% needs to be watched with the video is Parabol/Parabola which are listed as seperate tracks but have to be listened to as one song. Again the video will enhance your experience and answer questions everybody always has on first listen. You can say the experience and journey while you listen and learn what the meaning of the songs are will be on a religious level. Although the song Right in Two is one of their more basic songs as far as time signatures and lyrical content, there is a video that goes with this song that is animated that visually captures what the song is portraying to the listener. In my opinion those are Masterpieces that with the videos are enjoyed and no drugs required you will however feel like you are on some good shit during and after listening to the songs. God Bless all my fellow TOOL Army members and I apologize for the long diatribe. ✌️

There are catchier riffs out there and as you said other songs are easier to find the time signature, but the combination of elite instrumentation, intelligent song writing, a good vocalist and the quality lyrics/messaging makes the band second to none for me. Your first song should probably have been something like The Pot or Aenema, a lot easier to digest. You should always have the lyrics up for yourselves as well. When listening to tool, if the song has lyrics, you should have them on standby somewhere, preferably on another device, so you can follow along
