    #wheelchairlife #accessibility #disability
Dan and I had a frustrating experience at the eye doctors’ a couple of weeks ago. Most people in office settings and other businesses could not be nicer in helping Dan out. Not every small business is accessible, but with a little aid usually we can make do.
The remarkable thing about this experience is that the facility was actually very accessible; it was the people that were not. They had it in their heads that they could not examine Dan; the he needed a specialist; he couldn’t communicate, (which he can as the video shows) and every other excuse they could dream up. Bottom line? They didn’t feel like doing it. And if they had said the phrases “patients like Dan…” or “cases like his” one more time I would have screamed so that you all could have heard it, LOL!

I’m sorry to hear this happened to you both. There is such an incredible need for eduction of the general public when interacting/treating individuals who have special needs or challenges. I also had a poor experience at an eye exam. It was a new doctor and I was incredibly nervous (if they put certain drops in my eyes, I have a violent reaction, and pass out completely). The doctor was less than understanding (like I was lying) which put me into a full blown panic attack. The doctor’s attitude worsened. He began to treat me as if I was delusional, and it was obvious he just wanted to get rid of me. He even had the gall to tell me that I didn’t need glasses! Mind you, I’ve seen multiple eye doctors over the years and have always received a corrective prescription. I had to assert myself to get him to complete the exam and to give me a script. (I really needed new glasses.)
There is so much discrimination against people with disabilities (visible and invisible). I felt completely demeaned and demoralized. He also dismissed my concerns about pressure I was having in my right eye. His behavior really hurt me on many levels.
I’m so glad you and Dan asserted yourselves and that Dan was able to get needed glasses. Not sure which pair he selected. I thought they all looked nice, hard to choose…
Keep making content like this. It’s important and more people need to understand and be informed. That’s the only way things will change. Love you guys! 🤓

That you didn’t need glasses? That’s a good one, and about the only thing these guys didn’t try on Dan. I think it is more difficult when there is no “apparent” disability. It just kills me because he works so hard and is so capable. I do want to do more of this education type of content, thank you for the support. And finally, what is it about eye doctors? ?!? Love you guys too! ❤️

Agreed. Stereotyping and discrimination is hard to overcome even with people being better informed.

I’ve been going to that location for years… had mixed results and I’m relatively able bodied perhaps not mentally… last time I got glasses I asked them to coat my old lenses into sun glasses… they told me I need all new lenses I said wait but you’ve been doing this for me for years… oh no not here so I walked out without sunglasses… everything is just profit motivated now…. I wear Ray ban frames brought them in with me .. oh we have to charge a set up charge … but wait don’t you sell Ray van frames ? Ehhhh yes… then why the set up charge … eh because
Customer service for everyone sucks now especially after the pandemic.
Obviously medical professionals should be comfortable around special needs people or at least speak to you prior to the examination with any concerns … but denying service is not an option.
I appreciate your tenacity but I’d make life easy for myself and deal with folks that will not give you a hard time… I would not be surprised if next time there is a vague regulation about denying service if the patient is blab blab blab insert excuse here
Btw I still need my old lenses turned into sunglasses

I’m generally with you, it would be interesting to show up with your frames and in a wheelchair, asking for the coating and new lenses, lol! But I can’t tell you how angry this one made me. The irony is that the facility was better equipped than most similar places are, and it was the PEOPLE that were inaccessible.

Also, the place that would have maybe welcomed Dan would cost $1,000 for the exam and one pair of glasses, while we paid $80 for a pair of readers and a pair of distance glasses. We dont have vision insurance, and are knee deep in other medical bills.

...soon there will be restrictions on age (because serving older people has more challenges... !) ... " ...sorry, we don't serve anyone over 80... 😀 )

I think there are glasses that can help people communicate. & "talk", yes?
( Like Stephen Hawking dictating the text for his books via his "good eyes"... looking at images and the alphabet and blinking to tell the computer what he wants to write or say. If I were in a condition like Hawking - I don't think I'd have the "smarts" or patience to spell each word to initiate a conversation much less scientific knowledge 😀 )

There is no one who can communicate with Dan the way you can - beyond yes- es or no-s. It must be so frustrating for Dan (being a really intelligent guy) not to be able to initiate a conversation - maybe he can - but in ways only you can understand ??? 😞 ... ❤️ ...

He does. It’s easier for me because I’ve known him so long. I also have an idea what he is LIKELY to say. He’s also using a head mounted laser and a word board to spell things - we’ll have to put that in a video. 🌻
