i think the appeal of music critics is that they can articulate stuff better than the average listener, and that's what draws people to them. understanding is a good feeling, after all. but yeah, hearing someone else's opinion can def alter your expectations going into an album. i prefer getting to know an album myself first before watching or reading a review (unless it's a positive one)
I like album reviews just to see other people's perspective, never watched a review without listening to the album myself beforehand and forming my own image that's probably not going to get influenced by an internet random

But It's not entirely subjective; at it's core is a base science as to what works and what doesn't, how it looks and feels just fluctuates over time.
