Hi everyone, if you're interested in having a play around with some of the RAW footage, we have both Prores and RAW test footage available here: www.dropbox.com/sh/ec12nhr92499c6n/AADWlXifk5wXDNsUr9_x1nWma?dl=0
I think we started going to MB/s once Mbps got too high. After 1080p Prores or Cdng it just makes more sense to go MBps for 4k as it's not in the thousands anymore. It just becomes a mouthful or it changes to Gbps, and if you're versed in computers or codecs then you you know what it translates to. Just like with ssd speeds. Now we're in GBps instead of MBps. Idk just seems to make sense to me.
Your three-part series on the BMD Pocket 4K should be the first thing anyone watches! Very good preliminary work that should satisfy owner-operators. Certainly, there will be people who are more interested in being video engineers than creators, who will want more. But I'd send everyone looking to purchase this system, or use it on a project, to you first. Hope you'll follow-up when BMD RAW is added. Thanks!
What i would really like to know is how the camera can handle consistently in actual shooting atmosphere. Is this camera truly robust to shoot a low budget indie feature or Gh5 is the way to go? Is it apt to shell our hard earned money on this for filmmaking or do you suggest something else? Compare with the usability and image quality of C200, C300, Fs5Mkii, FS7, A73, Gh5 and maybe a red epic. It's not about weather this camera is better or not, it's just to know how the colors look. Also the practical advantages of windowed 120 fps, what lenses are better if we shoot something like skateboarding/motorcycling etc,. Where 120fps is much more useful.
Thanks for answering the autofocus question! It must come with some sort of focus peaking function so that you can keep a moving object in focus, I assume? Thanks again for the good video on this. If you have a DJI Ronin S, I'd also be very interested to see if you can use the follow focus wheel with the BMPCC4K. But no worries. Thanks!
Thank you for taking the time and answering all these questions, it was veri informative. I would really like to see the mini xlr in the work, a sound test to see the quality of the preamp in the camera might be interesting
Markus Magnon Exactly. Being compared to actual cinema cameras is most appropriate. Those other cameras (GH5, A7III etc) are for photography with some video features.
Played with the camera at Cinegear specifically looking for rolling shutter. Was happy to see there was apparently very little, but would enjoy seeing a more detailed test of it.
It's a tool. The ASC Manual has always had pan speed data, which was driven by things like: focal length; frame rate; shutter angle. Digital imagers simply have to be treated in much the same way. Even with global shutters, the old rules should be taken into account for camera movement.
My original opinion is changing fast. I'm liking this camera more. To be fair, I also got a few things wrong in the spec department. It's a much better camera than I originally thought 👍 Many thanks for the overview.
thank you for your attention to details and professionalism in these videos. Everything is clear and even the info tab is well written and laid out. The team behind these videos deserve a pat on a back and an A+ score.
I'd love to see a video comparing the best MFT primes on this camera such as the Veydra and the Voigtlander lenses vs EF cine primes such as Xeen or CN-E with a speedbooster. Considering the set of four Voigtlanders is about £4k, while that will buy you just two Xeens or one CN-E and an adapter, it'd be fun to see. Wasn't smaller and lighter the purpose of MFT video cameras like this Blackmagic and the GH5s to begin with?
If you can, compare it to the Fujifilm X-T3. I know they are quite different, especially when it comes to codecs, but the video features on the Fuji are awesome so it would be very interesting to see how it holds up.
Get both, would be a lovely cheep A & B cam combo. Don't stress about Ibis, learn how to hold a camera and compose a shot instead of gabbling around to make it look more interesting. Both great cameras with fantastic skin tones.
I'm choosing between these two as well, I'm leaning towards the X-T3 and pairing it with the Ronin S because I figure any shot that will benefit from a gimbal (e.g. filming someone's face while they are walking) would benefit from continuous auto focus. The colour science is also good on it; the BMPCC's major draw for me is low light performance.
@@ShivaPrakash What did you end up going with? I have an XT3 and you are right in regards to auto focus. Doing stuff like a tracking shot, especially with shallow DOF, its just amazing to have. I am saving for the Pocket 4k though, the compressed RAW and low light performance look amazing, especially for 1k.
I have a BMPCC4k and a Vitrox, Aperture and is works fine, as yet AF does not. Lens tested are, Sigma 18-35, Canon 70-200, Tokina 11-16, Ziess Dist 21, 2.8, All work fine, IS works fine, but no AF as yet.
This is truly the reviews that a tech head likes. Great job...ps I’m happy with my GH5S purchase over the BMPCC4K especially after seeing how some features of the GH suit my filming style more than the BM.
Really nice tests! Some input for the next video: 1. Does it really have the advertised 13 stops of dynamic range? 2. How does the camera compare to the Kinefinity Terra 4k (kind of similar sensor specs) 3. What kind of images can you get with a speedbooster and the sigma 18-35 or some fullframe lenses
Extremely informative video ... THANK you for doing this. Please , at the DATA RATE chart , put a label explaining to people that it concerns ONLY 30p framerates. Again , EXCELLENT work !!! Greedings from GREECE.
Hey Carl - amazing videos as always. Love what you're covering as we're waiting for our pre-order over here in Canada. A couple of quick questions: 1. Can you do a direct footage transfer from the camera to a computer with a USB-A to USB-C cable? I'm wondering if I can avoid purchasing a CFast reader. 2. How good (or bad) are the on-board microphones? 3. How good are the audio pre-amps with the 3.5mm jack? With the XLR input?
I would like to know how it can be set up for vlog style shooting. (Aside the BPCC, would you do a review of the Sony Z190? I know you have done one for the Z280, but I’m very curious about a comparison to the Z280 as well as how it sets itself apart from its competitors in the same price range). Thanks for your clear reviews. I always love watching them.
The big question for my next camera purchase is if it's worth losing auto focus. An image quality comparison between this, Gh5s, z6, xt-3, a7iii when using log would be very helpful! If you can only do one, my vote is the xt-3.
It does not have live view capability. You can control the settings and start / stop recording but it's not quite as capable as the Panasonic Lumix Image App.
Great job! Solid real-world review well explained. I am so sick of people just quoting specs and others in their reviews, great to see something actually tested by the reviewer. Wondered if the 5.1 is a typo. Mine has 4.1 (or perhaps the firmware needs upgrading).
Another topic I would like to see covered is practical power set ups. The battery life is one of the main things keeping me from pre-ordering, and coming from mirrorless camera's I don't even know where to start with bigger power solutions.
Thank you again. Excellent as always. I did think the C200 data was huge, did not comprehend the size comparison. Plus a great explanation about dual native iso. Excellent information to have.
Amazing video! Please compare it to the Panasonic GH5s since they apparently have the same sensor. I think a lot of people are curious about the differences!
Really good review. Like really good. Unlike other reviews where I come away feeling like I just got a generic understanding of the camera, you actually know your technical stuff and can explain the technical issues related to camera in a meaningful way. So not only do I get to know the camera better, but I learn something about the art of video. thank you. Definitely subbed. Btw, starting to like this camera
Lovely and informative video. My only request is how much of a difference in detail and recovery between ProRes and DNG Raw when doing low light. This is quite important for us wedding videographers. Thank You.
Hi, I'm falling in love with this camera ... I want to buy it ... but I have some doubts I have lenses with Canon EF mount 1 - What do I lose if I use adapters? image clipping? aberrations? focus? touch focus? 2 - can I record with this camera for one or two hours continuously, like a normal video camera? (obviously with banks of batteries and large hard drives) but the camera would support that? 3 - the touch focus works while the camera is recording? 4 - If I can not use my lenses with EF frames, what lens do you recommend? that give me quality and price blessings from Guatemala you have a new follower from here
Such a Pro Reviewer! Honestly, I look forward to seeing your further testing! I think you know best which to compare it to! Idk, Ursa Pro, EVA1, FS7, the bigger ones against the supernew Little one :D
What about the rolling shutter performance? Some quick pans would be great. I would also love to know how this camera rigs out. Does the form factor block it from balancing well on traditional shoulder rigs? (Tilta, Arri, Movcam) etc.. Do you need to over expose in their LOG gamma like you do with S-LOG for example? A candle-lit shot with lots of black shadow areas, exposed normally based on a light meter reading would be great visualize whether or not it's going to give you noisy shadows due to small sensor size and how much light the pixels are actually obtaining.
ProAV TV thanks for the reply! Also another thing I was wondering about: how’s the workflow with the CDNG RAW? Having shot ARRIRAW, you have to go into debayering to turn the image into an RGB image. Do you have to do that with the BMPCC as well?
Great stuff, guys! I guess I'll just repeat what I wrote on your other video: I would absolutely love to see a comparison to the URSA Mini Pro in terms of image quality with the different frame rate and picture modes.
Thanks for a very detailed informative video on this camera. I am still waiting for the camera to become available for general sale in Australia. The shops will have to honor their pre-orders first.
Excellent review. I was curious about the Bluetooth app. How well does it function with the camera and does the autofocus button on it work only center or can you preselected the position? Since they don’t have full WiFi functioning it would be nice to just need an external monitor and app to film yourself in a pinch, rather than adding a WiFi follow focus too.
Nice video, new subscriber here! I'm wondering if the touch screen autofocus works with a metabones speedbooster adapter, do you have one to test? I'm not fan of auto focus, but that could be handy on a Ronin S, without a follow focus device.
Great stuff as always from you Carl. I'd be interested in seeing a detailed test of the various media options using products from different brands/manufacturers. Q1: Does the camera still record audio when shooting in variable frame rates? Q2: When recording if a media option reaches capacity, does the camera continue recording onto another media option if it has enough write speeds to do so? For example, SSD to CF to SD?
Thanks a bunch for doing this. I have always loved Prores but I have never had a camera shooting in prores directly. I have used only Atomos. I am interested on the metabones speedbooster with any Canon lens, if you have a chance
I appreciate the thorough tests. This is quality work. Very helpful in my research and decision-making. I'd like to see a test of crop factor with various lens adapters. How is external video monitoring? How does it work running to an external monitor that does ProRes RAW. How does that compare to the internal raw?
It won't output a raw signal to an external monitor, so you wont be able to use Prores raw. You can record normal prores, but it can do that in camera so there isnt much point other than for backup really. Carl
Thanks, great info for anyone looking at this camera. I have a GH5 with Olympus pro line of lenses. I would like to see a side by side of the 2 cameras using the same glass ob both. Then pointing out the differences, strengths and weaknesses. Thinking of adding this camera. Also what accessories for the camera as well as best way to transfer to computer. Thanks
If you could include in your next video some affordable recommendations that would address some of the camera's limitations like lack of IBIS, battery life, and low light performance, that would be very much appreciated.
Very good job guys, best footage on the net. I would like to see some USB-C action for extended power and some super high end lenses in action on this thing.
Thanks so much for the review. I’m picking one of these up tomorrow. Any chance you could post a link to the data rates and record times slide in the description? I’m trying to decide what size SSD to get and this is very helpful. Also, what frame rate is this referencing? I’m assuming 25p?
Thanks for all this information! This is great. I'd love to see it compared to the GH5 or GH5s (probably the GH5s ideally given they are similar in a lot of ways). Thanks for putting out these well put together and informative videos. Some of the best stuff on the BMPCC 4k that I've found by far.
Thank you for the work you put into these reviews! I know you're going to focus on audio in an upcoming video. In that review can you include the results of audio coming through a mic mounted on the camera? I know the Micro Cinema Camera's fan noise ruined any audio coming through a mounted mic. Testing this setup may yield results applicable to those who would like to run-n-gun or create v-logs in quiet surroundings (I understand this camera is not for those purposes, but some of us would like to try ;)). Thank you!
Could you please compare the dynamic range and the rolling shutter between the 4K mode and the FullHD mode of this camera. Also, a comparison of the dynamic range and rolling shutter of this camera with the GH5s and the Fuji XT3 would be great.
Two questions I cannot find a concrete answer from reading the PDF manual: Does the pocket support auto ISO? Setting a steady shutter speed and a fixed aperture, the camera must auto-expose by adjusting ISO / gain? Does the pocket support common AWB? The manual on p37 names AWB what all other manufactures have as custom WB, where it is set via a grey card etc. Have you found a true AWB that changes depending on lighting conditions?
Thanks again for a great Video! I whould be interested in a Video Quality comparison of C DNG 5:1 to Prores. Whats the difference when you have nearly the same Datarate!? Thank you.
I'm really going crazy trying to decide between BMPCC 4K and the C100mark ii. I absolutely LOVE the look of the c100 but I can't believe this camera is only $1,300 new compared to the C100m2 ($3000) new here in the US. I also love that there is continuous autofocus in the C100m2. Although I don't ever shoot in 4K it would be nice to have it just in case. IDK, I need help! I shoot events mostly, run and gun, and some RUclips videos that's what it would be used for.
Great video, i know comparisons are difficult to make as everyone wants to have it with a different camera... nevertheless i would love to hear a comparison with GH5 and Sony A7SII since they are the class competitors. i would also love a comparison in image quality with the Canon C200 even thought it is a much more expensive camera... This is mainly cause i'm interested in getting the C200 but due to its codec, considered by many a faux pas, i was wondering if images on the BMCC4K is better in term of quality. Thanks a lot
I would love to see a video comparing uncompressed raw to 3:1 to 4:1. And is 4:1 that different than 422hq, at that point, is the smaller 4:1 better quality than 422hq?
Thank you for that informative video. Honestly the price point for this camera and so far what i have seen from some very lucky youtubers who happen to have it already; is just fantastic. Also hopefully with a firmware update we can get blackmagic RAW soon on it. Game changer until i the A7S3 comes out.
Great video, thanks Carl! Would love to see the FS5 in a battle! And, are the data rates shown in the table for 30 fps? I suggest for 60fps it would double the rate?
Thanks for your video, very instructive and serious. Can you propose what configuration a PC should have to process Raw Lossless and Proress video files?

Excellent review. I was curious about the Bluetooth app. How well does it function with the camera and does the autofocus button on it work only center or can you preselected the position?
Since they don’t have full WiFi functioning it would be nice to just need an external monitor and app to film yourself in a pinch, rather than adding a WiFi follow focus too.
Great video. Answered most things I have been wondering about. Only thing missing is how does it color grade to the Ursa Mini Pro? Perfect B cam?
We will be comparing it to that and to other cameras as well soon.
Carl
Well explained and detailed. Great effort put into this research
Thanks for watching
Carl
Finally someone testing moire and aliasing. Thank You!
Thanks for watching
Carl
Nice, quite thorough, well done.
Thanks a bunch for doing this. I have always loved Prores but I have never had a camera shooting in prores directly. I have used only Atomos. I am interested on the metabones speedbooster with any Canon lens, if you have a chance
Love your videos. Extremely informative. Thanks for taking time to make these.
Would like to see it heavily graded in a cinematic style. Teal and orange for example. thanks!
Teal and orange... ew.
#Basic But damn if we don't see this all the time.
Carl
Great detailed review! Please compare to GH5S if possible- low light, high frame rate noise, dynamic range.
GH5s will definitely be in the comparisons don't worry.
Well thought out and executed video.
Very good job guys, best footage on the net. I would like to see some USB-C action for extended power and some super high end lenses in action on this thing.
Thanks!
We are looking at rigging it out completely into a cinema setup for a future video
Carl
Thanks so much for the review. I’m picking one of these up tomorrow. Any chance you could post a link to the data rates and record times slide in the description? I’m trying to decide what size SSD to get and this is very helpful. Also, what frame rate is this referencing? I’m assuming 25p?
Great video! Lots of good information!
No problem, thanks for watching!
The GH5 and GH5s will be in the comparisons video don't worry.
Carl
Thanks mate! it’s a really detailed video, I’m curious to see how it compare with GH5s which is rumoured to be using the exact same sensor.
Thanks for watching
Gh5s comparisons are coming soon
Carl
Thanks! Really needed to see this- great work!
Glad it helped, thanks for watching
Carl
I'd like to see some battery tests, and when comparing against other cams the GH5s is a must
Gh5s will definitely be in there dont worry!
Carl
Great video. Could you do a comparison to the Sony A7III?
Thank you for the work you put into these reviews! I know you're going to focus on audio in an upcoming video. In that review can you include the results of audio coming through a mic mounted on the camera? I know the Micro Cinema Camera's fan noise ruined any audio coming through a mounted mic. Testing this setup may yield results applicable to those who would like to run-n-gun or create v-logs in quiet surroundings (I understand this camera is not for those purposes, but some of us would like to try ;)). Thank you!
Great idea, I've added that to the list! We will test the internal mic's plus a rode videomic
Carl
Could you please compare the dynamic range and the rolling shutter between the 4K mode and the FullHD mode of this camera. Also, a comparison of the dynamic range and rolling shutter of this camera with the GH5s and the Fuji XT3 would be great.
Can you do some tests with the Veydra mini primes, as that's the combo I'm thinking of getting.
Great stuff by the way
Two questions I cannot find a concrete answer from reading the PDF manual:
Does the pocket support auto ISO?
Setting a steady shutter speed and a fixed aperture, the camera must auto-expose by adjusting ISO / gain?
Does the pocket support common AWB?
The manual on p37 names AWB what all other manufactures have as custom WB, where it is set via a grey card etc.
Have you found a true AWB that changes depending on lighting conditions?
Thanks again for a great Video! I whould be interested in a Video Quality comparison of C DNG 5:1 to Prores. Whats the difference when you have nearly the same Datarate!? Thank you.
A comparison to Fujifilm XT3, especially dynamic range and high iso noise performance would be very helpful thankyou
I'd LOVE to see your thoughts on different battery solutions
Thank you for doing these tests, very helpful information, much appreciated.
No problem, thanks for watching
Carl
good information
Glad you found it useful
Dan
I'd like to know what the rolling shutter jello effect is like. Passing cars, whip pans, traveling etc.
Next video will show a rolling shutter example
Carl
I'm really going crazy trying to decide between BMPCC 4K and the C100mark ii. I absolutely LOVE the look of the c100 but I can't believe this camera is only $1,300 new compared to the C100m2 ($3000) new here in the US. I also love that there is continuous autofocus in the C100m2. Although I don't ever shoot in 4K it would be nice to have it just in case. IDK, I need help!
I shoot events mostly, run and gun, and some RUclips videos that's what it would be used for.
Can I add EOS R to the mix? If you like the canon look, continuous autofocus and only really interested in 1080p could be a great choice?
Carl
Would like to see a test of the UMP vs BMPCC4K. I am wondering if this could actually replace the bigger camera for most of my shoots.
*Rolling Shutter is super important* This will decide everything for me. If it's worse, there is not way I'm gonna give up my GH5s for the BMPCC4K
We will cover rolling shutter in the next video
Carl
Great video, i know comparisons are difficult to make as everyone wants to have it with a different camera... nevertheless i would love to hear a comparison with GH5 and Sony A7SII since they are the class competitors. i would also love a comparison in image quality with the Canon C200 even thought it is a much more expensive camera... This is mainly cause i'm interested in getting the C200 but due to its codec, considered by many a faux pas, i was wondering if images on the BMCC4K is better in term of quality.
Thanks a lot
We are looking into comparing it with both small mirrorless cameras, and larger video cameras like the c200
Carl
Awesome! looking forward to it.
Please do the test with Sigma 160-600 mm leneses
Great testing, very useful info. Thanks Carl.
I’m sure the next version will come with inbody stabilization.
Great video, thanks Carl! Would love to see the FS5 in a battle! And, are the data rates shown in the table for 30 fps? I suggest for 60fps it would double the rate?
Yes, the table is based on 30p.
Blackmagic havent specified that 60p is exactly double the frame rate. But it is possible.
Carl
Thanks for your video, very instructive and serious. Can you propose what configuration a PC should have to process Raw Lossless and Proress video files?
Nice review~ love this channel, btw.
Would be great to see a comparison between GH5s, Eva 1, FS5mk2 and C200
