In this special One Day Build filmed earlier this year, mathematician Matt Parker visits the cave to build a rhombic dodecahedron with Adam! Be prepared for lots of fun geometry discussion as Adam and Matt try to make abstract math concepts tangible with a physical build. They also take this construction a few steps further by lining the inside of the polyhedron with mirrors and LED strips for an infinty mirrored effect!

Matt: *Nerding out about shapes.*
Adam: *Nerding out about tapes*
It rhymes lmao
Btw I have a good one,
lmao yeet
I peeled both of my toenails off of my feet.
Jamie standing somewhere, keep it simple, keep it simple. But no, Adam and Matt gotta overcomplicate stuff!.
I always loved Jamie's ability to above else keep project simple, almost to a fault.
They have no windows, so they can't nerd out about drapes. They have no refrigerator, so they can't nerd out about grapes.
@@skfok8472 ... Do you only have two toenails?
"This adds a lot of space to a room" that sentence made the 50 minutes worth the watch.
Knowing Matt, I wouldn't even be surprised if he thought of that punchline beforehand and it's what made him decide on this particular build
"It's bigger on the inside."
That throwaway line was so perfect 👌 😄
I read this comment and was like wtf? this was a five minute build??? check timestamp, well ok.
Apparently my adhd brain skipped all the boring parts and I didn't even notice
Came for the infinity box, stayed for the math puns.
"I'm psyched that there are ways to do this wrong"
I need this on a shirt.
What an epic statement
it's rrrrrrrreally interesting to see them work out the LED mapping. Not specifically for the outcome, but for the group dynamic and communication. Adam being brutally honest that he has stopped listening (well, his "brain has stopped taking on new information"), Matt trying to think it through on the fly under pressure (Adam started stimming by tapping his foot but caught himself), Adam identifying their difference in approach (satisfyer vs maximizer) and calling out their time shortage, Matt knowing when he has to resort to ripping fresh pieces of tape instead of trying to help with the complicated building, etc. You can see that these folks have worked in groups, know what to do and say to keep things moving without causing grievance, know their own strengths and weaknesses and play to them.
Hear Hear! this is quite possibly my favourite collaboration ever!
This is very well put, I thought the same thing watching, they are both amazingly adept at not getting hung up on the wrong things with one another.
"How many engineers does it take to change a lightbulb?" "Three and a lot of backtracking."
I genuinely thought that was a well known joke (may still be), and spent a few moments trying to understand the punchline, however, after googling, it doesn't seem to be. I understand it now, and feel like an idiot... perhaps using the word 'wire' rather than 'change' might have saved my stupidity, but that's purely semantics... did make me chuckle when I finally realised :)
I like that, "It adds a lot of space to a room", infinite space.
It’s bigger on the inside
This is what happens when you combine a theoretical genius with a practical genius. They're both so excited it's infectious!
42:59
Matt: "Let's not move these again."
Adam: *proceeds to spin the thing multiple times*
Demonstrates why he and Jamie would butt heads!
Matt: "we can no longer reorient either of these"
Adam: *instantly reorients one*
Unexpected chemistry between Adam and Matt, they need to do more!
I think it should be expected if you know both of them. And them also both being builders, math and science nerds.
Seemed like they were kinda pissed haha
Andrew Chapman I’m shipping them
Seriously! I don't know if tested is at all familiar with 3 blue 1 brown but he would make another great applied maths / making collaboration.
@@joediaz5330 Lol, given the different meaning that word has in the UK / Australia, your comment made me laugh 😂🍺
Tfw you realize you played with the toys Adam made in a museum as part of a school field trip and you have proudly remembered your stellated rhombicosidodecahedron ever since.
I remember back in elementary school, my class made regular polyhedra Christmas tree ornaments. Little did we know, when we were told to make two of them, one was going to a Christmas tree at the art museum nearby just prior to our field trip to that museum. I was so excited to see my blue cube sitting on the "Gee, I'm a tree" exhibit in the lobby.
My elementary school took us on a field trip to a pig farm! 😎
....😳
....🤨
I recently got a fidget toy called a Shashibo that demonstrates perfectly that the rhombic dodecahedron is the inversion of a cube. It's a cube made up of twelve half-rhombic pyramids (Rhombic pyramid cut in half lengthwise along the rhombic face) and then attached to each other by stickers (across the faces) and magnets. The result is a cube that can fold into a bunch of shapes, but one of them is the Rhombic dodecahedron. I... might have had a info-dumping session with my spouse when I realized that. She now knows I have a favorite polyhedron. Ya know, nerd stuff.
“As long as we don’t reorient this...”
*Adam immediately reorients it.*
when the two smartest kids in class get paired for the lab... lol
That is perfect
Lol well said ..
I was coming to say something very similar to this
lol this is them after they finish 30 minutes early and have nothing else to do
@@TheMcm1998 I was thinking 2 weeks early on a 4 week project but yeah 😆
“ infinitely many of them aren’t working” could we call this “the Parker infinity “
You are classic man! Love you both!
at the end he mentions "it adds a lot of space to the room". you could argue it adds infinite space haha.
I laughed out loud when he said that, mainly because of HOW he said it. These guys are great.
Best statement in this episode had me LOLing!
27:51 When you’re working on a group project/puzzle and one person has some part perfectly thought out which allows the project to move forward but no one else understands what happens at that part 😂🤣
"as long as we don't reorient that one, and don't reorient this one, we should be ok!" *moves them both*
Only Adam Savage can make a video entertaining enough to watch three men troubleshoot a physical math equation 😎👍
That was a cool build!
I have to say, this is quite possibly my favourite of all tested videos and collaborations ever! Matt and Adam have such great chemistry working together. This was a complete and utter joy to watch!
I was not expecting to hear them discuss the geopolitical situation of north-eastern Spain before the 3 minute mark. When it comes to dodecahedrons you'll usually need to wait for about 10 minutes. These men know their stuff.
And that even though Eugène Catalan, after which these are called Catalan solids, was a Belgian.

No one expects the spanish inquisition.
I've lost count of words I've never heard prior to this episode.
Felt so dumb dude
@I OFFER YOU THIS you should have watched the whole thing lol
43:20 When they start to trace the steps where the LED strip should go - the tango music was a touch of genius. Someone give a cookie to the editor!
"it adds a lot of space to a room" feels like something matt thought of months ago when they were planning this and has been waiting to drop it this whole time
"It adds a lot of space to a room" made me smirk like a dork. This is amazing, I love it!
I noticed this comment just seconds after I started smirking at that line.
also infinite many of the stripes are off. But on the other side - 3 times as many are on^^
Does that mean the room would be bigger on the inside then?
"Branching?"
"Infinite amount aren't working"
I died.
This one day build is my favorite by far. I hope to see other people from Perodictable to Deepsky , I think they all have some build idea that'll be great. Sixty symbols! dang.
Adam Savage and Mike Merrifield, make it happen ! Or Philip Moriarty.
Lifari.
make this happen please and thank you
I run my own wood working business and I have used a dodecahedron shape before to make a hanging light. Each face had scroll sawn Celtic knot elements on them. It was hollow to allow for a light to go inside. You guys have opened my mind to the possibility to utilize other solids (including this one) in the creation of even more varied light boxes. Love my man Mr. Adam Savage, always an inspiration.
When they turn the light on, it genuinely looks like there‘a a whole other place inside of it! It works so well!!
"It adds a lot of space to a room!" Haha - It's bigger on the inside.
So then they actually built a TARDIS from Dr Who?
Haha. Parker's the best!
So the doctors real name is parker
It's smaller on the outside!
They both looked so awkward at the beginning like "oh my god it's really him!" but their personalities collided in the best way, this was an awesome episode from two of my favorite mathematically-inclined RUclipsrs :D
They were definitely both star struck
I have hated maths for so very long because I found the numbers difficult to imagine, but Matt just gave me the key to better understanding and being able to visualise those numbers in "finding and exploding patterns." Thank you so very much for that. Mind Blown!
So you know it's "exploiting" the patterns. You find a pattern, then you use it. :)
Watching these guys geek out about shapes reminds me of how I felt when I solved a shape problem at work. Basically, I needed a shape for which the smallest box that could enclose it didn’t share a face with the mystery shape. When my coworker and I figured that it was a tetrahedron it was so satisfying. We immediately mocked it up by folding post it notes.
Both stand there looking at the finished build
Matt: -"In theory, this should look incredible."
I love the fact that Adam knows what a "Parker-something" means
There is no escape.
@@monoamin_ The full term is Parker Square, see also: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Parker#Recreational_mathematics_contributions

This was an “infinitely” satisfying build and collaboration!! Definitely one of my favorite videos on this channel. Thanks Adam and Matt!
I love that solid! Not only is there a cube hidden in it that can be revealed if you draw line on the shorter face diagonals, as they showed in the video, but if you draw lines on the longer face diagonals, you get an octahedron!
“We can no longer reorient these”
*immediately starts reorienting both of them* 😂
Matt wanting to continue to experiment so zealously but Adam having to ground him to get the project done was so wholesome. Such a wonderful interaction between you two.

The best part of this is watching them struggle the same way I do while trying to visualize all this. I love that it's not simply explaining "this is how it works" it shows the struggle to get there too.
That was awesome. Been watching both these guys for years & it's just a blast to see them collaborate on something like this.
PURE JOY!!! Proving once again: "Do we stop playing because we grow old, or do we grow old because we stop playing?"
There's also the crucial time aspect when you're an adult. This video makes money and if it didnt it wouldnt have happened. Unless of course they meet on a weekend. But if you have a family... Worked hard entire week.... Its obviously possible, just difficult in actual real life.
The smile on Matt's face when Adam called him a friend is so wholesome.
Just that makes it look like he hasn’t had many friends growing up
IKR! I sure hope they are now nerd-besties... nerdsties...? Besterds...? Anyway, it’s not hard to spot someone who grew up alone, outcast from the “normal kids”. It’s a vulnerability that never fully heals. What stands out the most is the fact that they are eager to comfort and support others, though. Empathetic souls.

When 1 question just flips the table lol
That one thing just really changed the whole thing from what it was to is lol
11:02 It makes me happy that Parker had to think about it for a moment.
So funny that at 8 minute they talk about 'how a math teacher would use this' - im sitting here (a math teacher) going, how can I have students play with this in my Geometry class...
Thank you for going the extra mile to get your students more interested in math, Teachers are an investment in society and it's a damn shame you folks aren't paid what you're actually worth.
I'm going to go against popular opinion here, but I feel that teachers who do not give students real life examples to relate the information to, are not worth paying as much as teachers who help the students discover the relevancy of the information through experimentation and self discovery. Not all teachers should be paid well. HillMath90, please do as you are thinking. My math teachers (private schools) has masters and doctorate degrees in math. They were not able to help me truly understand the subject. I ended up having the self educate using real world examples on my own time, outside of school, in order to understand math.
@@alexgagnon9414 Just because that's not how your learning process works, does not mean they're not worth paying less attention to for the general public.
@alex Gagnon I bet you are against the popular opinions quite often amirite
Please do that. You're sure to spark someone's passion if you let yours shine through your work. Also, if I recall correctly, Professor Matt Parker has a store with all kinds of interesting things. Mathematical puzzles, games, weirdly shaped(or numbered!)dice and even some excentric paperweights, literally and figuratively. I'm not sponsored, but I'd recommend you check it out if you havent done so already. There's probably at least a couple of things you could use in class, per subject, up for sale on the site. Cheers and utmost respect, Sir! :D

Havent seen this in a while, and now rewatching it, I can appreciate the use of music (tango?) when they are wiring the inside of the mirrored shape. Nice job.
Love to see Adam so giddy and blown away by anything, ever.

Now give us your wiring diagram for the dodecahedron ...
I was really hoping they went down that path. But oh well. Maybe in the future ☺️
While not screaming, I was groaning inwardly at how simple this way overthought problem would be and amazed why they did not see it. Oh well if math is what mathematicians enjoy doing, electricity is what electchickens enjoy doing; obviously non overlapping fields of study. (yes I can spell electrician, if you don't understand the intentional misspelling your missing out on a great channel)
It depends if it's a 5v strip, which you can cut/splice anywhere or a 12v+ strip where you can only cut/splice every n LEDs.
Ah, to be specific, it only matters if the strip is wired in parallel or in series parallel. These strips are parallel strips and would be fine to wire up from any point where there is a plus or minus.
Loved this build, start to finish. Just listening to these guys: their brains working solutions, bouncing ideas, processing results in synchronicity. Please do more projects together soon!

Sam Sowden García thats unfair because it’s a made-up word that gets the point across

adam: "is there a solid where all the faces are the same but one"
pyramids: "am I a joke to you"
@@Daiceto Works the same with pyramids...
@@Daiceto Actually he specifically didn't mean a tetrahedron since all the faces on that are the same.
I would assume so as he suggests a hexagonal base pyramid not the typical square based one.
C Lopez Why not?
@@hazerod833 To be a true "geometric solid", all sides must be equilateral. In this case, all but one side. If you cut an equilateral hexagon into 6 pieces, you'll get 6 equilateral triangles, all laying flat. There is no way to make them into a pyramid. Now, take one out and you can make a pyramid with a pentagon base, but you'll never get a pyramid from 6 equilateral triangles.
drawing the lines of the cube and explaining the "inside out" aspect of it was fascinating!
If you connect the other points of each rhombus, you get an octahedron. Wish they had mentioned that fun fact
