Adam Savage's One Day Builds: AT-AT Walker Paint and Electronics!

- Adam finally completes his build and paint-up of this incredible studio scale AT-AT Walker garage kit inspired by the stop-motion miniature used for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back! He builds a snowy platform to mount the model and then adds a few extra elements: a crashed snowspeeder and a miniature Luke hanging from the Walker's underside! Lighting electronics and a few paint passes complete the build and give it an awesome sense of scale!

For the editor: if Adam's ok with it, would be nice to have a small scroll on the bottom of the video with the songs he's listening at the time. On my part, pure curiosity, tho i'd fully understand if Adam wouldn't feel ok with putting the songs he's into out there. Not all things should be public. Cheers, you're doing great work capturing Adam's shenanigans into a well edited video!
Remember when these movies were incredible.
I’m so geeked. 😊
This is cool, my only suggestion as to what I would have done different is to use .02mm enameled bell wire instead of the insulated wire Adam used.
Adam what brush was u using to put the wash on with
At the approx. 15 minute point when he gets the lightsaber to fit in Luke's hand and he has that happy, semi-maniacal laugh....I think EVERY single builder who has been in the process of trying to make something work, and in the end it fits perfectly, has made that similar laugh. It's the joy and relief you feel when you are working on something that you're not absolutely positive will work out comes together just how you saw it in your mind's eye. Bravo Adam, Bravo.
Same with paint. I emitted the same noise just yesterday, I'm building the battleship USS New Jersey in 1/350 and I'd been spray painting the hull. You can imagine the stressful moment when I removed the carefully applied masking tape, hoping to find a beautifully straight and sharp black waterline stripe on a model that big. When the tape was removed and the crisp black stripe was revealed in it's straight and sharp glory, I definitely sounded like a mad scientist for a second
Especially when the idea pops out into your head, you have no immediate true/false feedback just the desire to see if you were right, you meet the items you thought about and BAM you grin like a maniac.
I ended up 3D printing a replica of the E-11 Stormtrooper blaster, took me 6 months. I had MANY of those "perfect fit" laughs, and just as many "this ain't gonna fit" laughs... lol...
I almost spit out my coffee when it seemed like Adam was going to drop the AT-AT in the beginning, FAST editing! LOL
Yeah, my heart skipped a beat there.
I would love to see the following 10 seconds.
2:58
God my heart stopped when he did that.
@video editor Definition: Diabolical - showing the cunning or ingenuity or wickedness typical of a devil. Usage in a sentence: Diabolical, your editing at time 3:01 is. 😨😂
Not many people can say...."I'm gonna do it the way I would be doing it in the spray booth at ILM ". What amazing memories you must have.
doesn't matter how many times I've seen it or done it myself, the weathering is what sells it, brings it to life, makes it feel real. It's a magic trick every time no mater how often I see it.
The weathering is so easy, yet brings models alive.
Cliff is absolutely the singular HERO in "Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood".
I am simply staggered by how many tools Adam has in his cave and then blown away with a rack that he made containing STAR WARS paint set how cool is that !
Awesome project! Those LED filaments are the best.
Do you have any idea where he found the bulb for Luke’s lightsaber? I can’t find anything of the sort
"Aziz...lights..!!" Lol.. love that movie so much...luc besson rocks..
Wait wait wait... Adam.. I need a breakdown on how Cliff is a villian? that is breaking my mind and I may see this movie totally differently. Awesome work as always!
How in the Hell is Cliff a villain??????? He is an awesome stand up guy....we don't get the truth about his wife and everything we see about him is absolute cool calm ....explain Adam!! I've followed you for decades... it's like a friend suddenly declared the earth is flat!!
tarantino confirmed that he DID murder his wife with a harpoon on a boat for one. Inspired by the mysterious death of natalie wood. Also every action he takes in the film is out of self interest, not for the sake of others. He also breaks the law multiple times and seems to have no real moral compass.
He's a fun villain. Deal.
Maybe because he's a completely self-interested narcissist. He does lots of morally ambiguous and self serving stuff, maybe that's enough to consider him a villain. Or maybe there's something specific we're missing.
Fans of the movie know that he did in fact murder his wife. He picks up an underage girl trying his best not to be tempted by her in the process. He violently murders intruders although there for heinous reasons, he still brutally efficiently ends their lives in short order.
So happy Adam have discovered wago connectors. They are great, especially for things in modelmaking where you might want to change around on things a bunch.
Hanging Luke and sabre... SOOO COOL!
Im 48 years old and the AT-AT walker is still my favorate
Those "lightsabers" would also make for some epic looking blaster shots either coming from the AT-AT its self or out of a speeder going past
When the lightsabre initially fit first time in Luke's hands, that giggle that came from Adam was absolutely triumphant. I love it xD
The detail is really well done. The attention to the uniform Luke is wearing is pure Adam. Well done.
Looks nice, you could also add some very light blue hues into it for an extra cold look
As a miniature hobbyist i love your stuff. As a human i love your enthusiasm, desire, abilty and way of showing/teaching and inspiring.
When it lights in the first hanging test; that made me so happy. I happy giggled a long with you. Thank you for the constant joy you bring.
Norm's reaction was hilarious. Love that guy.
This is SUCH an inspiring video, Mr. Savage! Thank you for documenting your crafting steps and sharing the exciting geekness of light with Norm. You and your team are an inspiration to those who are making our own crafting home in the universe. Some Tatooine dust in my eye there. MTFBWY!
Thank you for your super thanks! We appreciate your support!
You are a very lucky man, Adam, to have found your passion and been able to make a living with it! It's fascinating to watch you so completely absorbed in your work.
16:53 Doc Brown vibes with the head torch and goggles (and the shirt!)
Adam, a little Lego light Saber hilt attached to the end of the LED would be the icing on the cake!
As always, thanks for the video.
I could imagine Mark Hamill and Adam having interesting insights while wandering around the shop or sitting in comfy chairs, shooting the breeze.
What a rollercoaster ride that was lol. From the near-drop to the drama with the neon, that was fun.
Another idea, if you were inclined - put a big AT-AT foot-shaped crush mark on Luke's crashed ship lol. So many options.
This has Boylei Hobby Time vibes.
Needs more calling it good
@@forcedtoregister100 😂 totally.
Well done finally finished looks absolutely awesome,
Abit scary at times l was on the edge of my seat thanks
I love it when Adam says, "Aziz! Light!"
I do this all of the time. 😀
I love how excited Adam gets about the small things. Puts a smile on my face every time.
I am amazed at how some of the things he does make no sense until it is done. He is a true artist. I wish I could do that.
Very Nice! I thought that I was the Only One sayin " Aziz, Light!" when I turn on the lights🤣
Used sparingly, micro clear glitter for cupcakes makes perfect sparkling frost on snow.
I don't know when this was shot. But, when you said you were finding it hard to see the tiny wire to solder, I immediately thought, too bad he doesn't have anything that might magnify his work. Something, maybe, with a custom stand...
That wire roughing through Luke was perfect!
Looks amazing. Love these videos Adam. Cheers Dave
So excited to finally see the end result
The wire routing was so satisfying and seeing him light up as he dangled was amazing
This model is beautiful. The Kenner At-At was my favorite vehicle growing up. Such an awesome toy.
10:49 The sound of this man's voice hit me like a ton of bricks. What a truly amazing, groundbreaking, entertaining show Mythbusters was. Am proud to say I was along for the ride. Edit - THE SNOW TAKES THE WIN! WOW Adds so much to the final product.
Norm saying "YES" then high fiving adam filled me with so much joy.
Happy Accident: how the dark areas between the hot spots in the red light make it look like there are the two pilots' silhouettes. Almost exactly like it does in movie when they are cresting the hill...I bet Adam will notice it once they go to take photos, sometimes you can't see how good a thing looks till it's done and you've walked away for a little. Love the love for the build.
Adam could even just cut out a two little people outlines (from the torso up) and glue it to the front of the block of acrylic and really sell the backlit pilot shadows.
Absolutely beautiful display! I felt Adam's pain with that saber break - like a punch to the chest. No doubt you've already ordered more backup bulbs. All those details really paid off!
I'm gob smacked how lifelike the small details make it pop. The ATAT looks so used and worn.
Just to let you know. You are a master. I love you my brother. I love your podcast. I have learned so much. We may not agree politically but I have been a fan scene the old mithmbuster days. Keep doing what you do to inspire the next generation of builders. You you man and Semper Fi
You've got there in the end Adam and it shows in your excitement, glad you got so much joy out of it
Watching Adam geek out over getting that lightsaber to light up pretty much made my day.
This is the coolest thing iv ever seen. For real
Fantastic Job Adam!!! You make me want to time travel back to the late 70s and work for IML. 😊
Picking up my Jaw sir… you’re a true student of your trade. Just Sick!!!
Great build, I'd say one thing to bring it more to life would be footprints, both from Luke and the At-At and some snow on Luke's boots and legs.
So, no one is going to talk about Adams special fx with the lightsaber connected, started as a kid sound, to a nice lightsaber fight lol 😂, what a great build, gorgeous work
Seeing Adam weathering something (whether it’s a proton pack or anAt At walker) with that soiled brush is something I didn’t know I needed to see!
OMG, I always saw the round things on the side of the head as the eyes sorta of like a chameleon's eyes. After 40 years I will never see an AT-AT the same way again.
I could watch you paint all day.
I dont watch ALL your videos. but your painting stuff is amazing!
The parts shot on phone are so much more calming than the hand held shots.
Whomever edited this deserves an award. The cut at 3:00 is a ( *chef's kiss*) perfect. Completely hooks the viewer until an answer is revealed. You... straight to the Pantheon of editors.
You are getting more spare light sabers , right....? Lol. Great build thanks Adam and the Tested team Tested team.
Fantastic job! You did such great work . Wonderful perseverance!
The "legally distinct" SW-esque music at the end kills me. Good job. lol.
Love the Falcon Crest theme like tune at the end 😂
All that careful work paid off in such huge ways! And what an amazing idea from Norm to have the lightsaber work; seriously cool project.
man that lightsaber sound impression is spot on.
Now that's a BIG lightsabre!
Brilliant video! 21:24 is the reason every person who does this type of stuff does it.
Eyy I'm very excited, saw this months ago and we never saw it built but I've noticed it in the background of other ODB's so happy to see it be finished. You're all great, Tested
I've used Kayte's video for snow in a diorama exactly the way you did. It's saved on my "useful maker content" playlist for a reason!
That squeeze bulb would be perfect for filling it with baking soda and using it to cure super glue. Thanks for the idea!
When Adam made the lightsaber noises he made my week 🤣 He’s just like us.
Watching Adam putting the snow on the baseplate gives me vibes in equal parts of Doc Brown from Back to the Future; Fear and Loathing; and Breaking Bad... In all the best ways !! 😂😂
THAT IS SO EXTREMELY COOL !!!
Love to see some black blaster scorch marks, about the AT-AT
Duuuude. This is the kind of build insanity that we love to watch!
Adam makes it look so effortless and easy, slapping wash onto the entire model and using a rag to take it off. I would be sh*tting bricks doing that to my model. But it really inspires me to be more loose and free aging my stuff. Yoda Adam gives us another lesson!
That hanging LUKE is amazing.❤️
That is absolutely brilliant
congratulations a work of art in metal and snow
Talk about scary. At the 3-min mark my heart leaped into my throat!
Loved the subtle 5th element shout out. But most of all that lightsaber is cooool
It looks soooo cool. Like taken out of the movie. And I love the way you do weathering, makes it look so real. I always enjoy watching you paint models. You are the best dude !!!
That shirt! -Had to do a double take that I wasn’t watching a Heron’s Bonsai video!
Right? It's a gorgeous shirt too, suits him well!
Hey, I once made one of these out of cake. Fully stood up, not crashed on its front, which come to think of it would have been sooo much easier.
Great build!
That's incredible. Considering cake is so delicate.
Pure entertainment and fascination. Terror and then relief. And then remarkable satisfaction. :)
Master at work. I love the chaos Adam has in his approach. Makes it look easy but weathering is an art form in itself
The sheer delight filling my soul to see this AT-AT complete!!! Astounding! And Luke in the mix as well! I love the journey you take us on with this project (the highs and lows!!).
Beautiful end result!
Best wishes from Belfast!
My heart skipped a beat when you turned balancing the AT-AT on one palm and your hand tipped the leg of the AT-AT! Had to calm down to enjoy the rest of the video! 😂
I just finished doing bandais 1/48th atst for my niece and yes brought lighting up for interior and blaster shots
The AT-AT, the only armored personel carrier that makes the American Bradley look like a resonable solution.
Who else heart just stopped when Adam almost dropped it??? ❤😳😳😳
I felt a thump, in my chest, when it happened. You're not alone, with that feeling.
Thanks!
Looks incredible. With those tube lights I like to run a thin bare silver wire down the side, and then put clear heat shrink over the whole thing to protect it.
Adam I have loved watching you since myth busters started. But I haven’t laughed as hard as your fifth element reference. “Ahzize light!” Got it right away. Thx for your hobby.
ty adam! good info and good fun guy who we all grew up watching along with the old team, they opened minds of young n old. i wish to craft just like him including the others
to strip thin wires I usually just use a lighter. melt a little bit of the insulation on the end then you can just use your finger nails to pinch it off. (depending on the insulation sometimes you don't even need to pinch it off as it will just curl back leaving exposed wire at the tip... from dupont wires to anything thinner I don't even attempt to use wire strippers, a lighter is way more effective than risking chopping the end of the actual wire off with strippers )
the build turned out amazing. the weathering really brings it to life
love the weathering detail for the streaks. I usually do streaks with oil base pin washes. It usually leaves a really nice effect when finished.
34-gauge magnet wire works for fine LED wiring. The insulation is a layer of enamel painted onto the copper, which you burn off with a hot soldering iron. Two pieces of wire will twist into something that looks like a cable, especially with a coat of paint.
The hot spots you mentioned make the shadows look kinda like two guys driving the AT-AT. Very cool! Nice work.
That's mad, I actually suggested using an LED filament on the first AT-AT video,
Looking awesome Adam.
Immediately I knew I was going to like this video when you called it an AT AT instead of an A-T A-T like I have heard SO many people say today!
I don't really have a strong opinion one way or the other, but I feel like pronouncing the letters individually makes some sense in parallel with the AT-ST (since pronouncing that "at-sit" just seems silly :).
Adam., I could sit and watch your channel for hours.. I've learned so much from you ,I don't know where to begin.. I'm a model builder myself and I have a channel on RUclips showing my builds.. I just want to say..., thank you for the things I have learned from you. Some day I hope to meet you in person and tell you some stories on how you've inspired me.. take care my friend.... I'll be watching.
