I bought the Capstone Tundra to replace my '11 Platinum. The best part of the Hybrid is it removes all annoyances of the Start/Stop Feature. The worst part is it removes all storage from the interior. This becomes even more annoying when you pop off the covers to the "Batter Bank" under the seats to find it is mostly just wasted space. There is Zero storage in this truck cab. Coming from my '11 with Lots of room behind the seats and some under, that has been a pretty big disappointment for me.
There are small but IMPORTANT differences in off road ability. It matters to owners ONLY if you drive on steep, rocky, sandy, muddy, icy, or snow conditions off pavement. Me, no normal driver will need them… until you do… THEN you REALLY need it. As someone who has experienced the joys of a $4,000 tow in a remote area… I’m all in for those seldom used features.

Good video Tim-Thank you! I’ll stick with my Platinum. Have you heard about the fuel gauge issue Toyota’s having with the new Tundra? When you drive the new Tundra in forward or reverse under 3 mph on a incline or decline the fuel gauge will go to full. I’ve had to manually watch my mileage as this has happened at least five times in the past two months. I contacted my local Desler and He said they are aware of it and it’s a software issue? Do you have any contacts at Toyota that you could reach out to?
I’d just buy an SR5 with the TRD Premium package and since I don’t use 4x4 much on the 4Runner even while off roading… might as well do RWD. Color would be blueprint or a magnetic gray.
I’m pretty sure the PRO got 22.5 while his Limited, non-hybrid said 24. I believe you are correct. That difference comes down to the added weight of the larger/heavier tires and no auto air dam up front. My guess is that’s 75% off the difference. The rest may be due to the extra weight of the hybrid battery pack that weighs about 600lbs.
I have a neighbor that added the TRD Pro badges to his normal Tacoma. I'm not sure what's up with some of the Toyota crowd. But he would be some jealous of this bright one. I think in a normal color that truck would be quite nice. I don't know though Tim I don't think your limited was a bad choice, it was the earliest for views too. I think I'd rather a Coyote Tremor in XLT trim over both of them to be honest though.
Tim, I like your reviews and opinions and I know you're limited to specific comparisons based on availability, but this question would be better asked if you were comparing a hybrid Limited with TRD Offroad package and the TRD Pro. Doing that would eliminate any questions related to the powertrains and just compare the trim levels. A Limited 4x4 with the hybrid, Crew max and 5.5' bed with max option package comes in at $63,925 whereas the TRD Pro comes in at $70,315. So, with equal powertrains, do the TRD Pro features justify the $6,390 price increase? Unique interior and exterior stylizations, 1.1" factory leveling kit, Fox Suspension, Larger tires and 18" BBS wheels, & TRD Exhaust are the notable differences I know of and for under $6,000 a lot of things can be done to a Limited.
This would be the way I would spec mine. Just like the current Gen 4Runner & Tacoma. I recommend to my clients to explore the TRD Off Road premium packages when shopping for the TRD Pro (with the money you save you can get a very nice lift, wheels, and tires) & you can take advantage of Toyota Financials rebates/financing incentives. They do not offer any incentives for the TRD Pro’s
Hey neighbor to the north up here in SD. You can get all the fancy screens, turn nobs for modes and 4x4, and hybrids all you want which I'm not against. It's just not for me. Ive just come to the sad conclusion I will never be able to get a new half ton truck when I can afford it. I dont want electric air dams, grill shutters, etc. Simple crank windows and shifters for this 33 year old.
Without being able to add a brush/grill guard to the front the Tundra isn't on my list for a new truck now. I will probably just get another Ram Cummings.
You want to add a damage multiplier to the front of your trucks? Never understood why people put those dumb weak things that collapse when you strike a pillow. If you want a real bullbar, theres already a bunch of companies making winch capable bullbars for the Tundra. As for buying a Ram with a CUMMINS not Cummings, apples to oranges, bud. Nobody who uses a 2500 truck cross shops with a half ton unless you're just one of those posers.
@@CACressida Towing specs for my 2004 2500 Ram is about the same as the current Ram 1500 if not better. 1500 trucks have come a long way from my old Dodge 2500. The grill guard is mostly for going through pastures in Texas. It helps a lot with scraps, pushing small cedar bushes out of the way, etc.. on the front of the truck. Even the payload on the new 1500's are really good compared to my 2004 2500 truck. Just need some basic things that the Tundra doesn't seem to have. Hoping for the Toyota reliability compared to the dodge stuff around the Cummins engine. The Engine is great on my 2004 but the rest of the Dodge parts keep falling off :)
I have the CrewMax V-8 but I also have a Highlander Hybrid, it runs like a scalded dog, I had the non-hybrid version but the hybrid is way better. Oh, 2011 CrewMax 253K 😁
So no one is gonna do a test on that light bar in the grill at night? I’m guessing it’s crap so it’s just for looks like all the other Toyotas that run the Raptor amber lights in the grill.
I wouldn’t buy a hybrid unless it got me another 5 mpg at least. More stuff to go wrong there’s already enough tech and twin turbos with problems. Hopefully a PHEV soon before they go all electric tundras
I wish they would bring these out to Australia. There is talk of it happening, but again Toyota wont build the truck in right hand drive, rather sending left hand drive trucks to be converted in a mum and dad factory, making the truck way to expensive for the average family. Silverado, Ram, are all between $120 grand Australian and $160 Grand Australian, these Tundras will sit the same in price.
The pump wasn’t accurate at all so we cut that part out. Likely a faulty gas pump. I’ve been doing these tests for years and it happens more than you’d think.
Since you strive for accuracy. The 3 lights above the grill are NOT marker lights, nor are they identification lights per FMVSS 108…They are just bling in a blatant attempt to copy ford.
Own the 1st Gen '06 D.C. 4X4, tried to love the 3rd Gen, outside is very nice but the interiors just GAWDY (JUST MY OPINION) and the MPG is HORRIBLE compared to mine. But the new ones I just CAN'T get into, Toyota really IMOP just messed up the whole look fo the truck. Could have done ALOT BETTER WITH THE EXTERIOR just see too muc CHEVY styling in it.
New fullsize truck are varying degrees of jokes. They're getting way too expensive, and keep getting lower and lower to the ground. No way would I would pay $70k for truck with 9" of ground clearance.
Yea, you definitely got the wrong one… should have gotten the naturally aspirated tried and true 5.7L V8. If you’re buying a truck for gas mileage, it’s for the wrong reasons, Toyota made a big mistake once they decided to get rid of their V8.
Not sure I agree with that. All the other brands, except nissan, is down sizing their engines and toyota doesnt offer a whole bunch of engines like they do not do they have the market share to do so. Their power numbers are just as good, it just hasn't clicked in their head yet that payload matters to a fully size truck so its can do full size truck things.
The tried and true close to 20yr old 5.7 ... This engine especially the hybrid makes more power through the entire range. I traded my 14 limited in for a TRD pro last week. There's no comparison.
The Trd pro will hold it's value much longer. I think when in the $70k plus price range it's the best buy in my option.
DO it, buy a Pro for next year, and review it.
Yeah, you picked the wrong truck. The TRD Pro definitely fits your personality better. Needs more tow hook though. 😉
Can you compare the TRD pro Tundra to the Silverado ZR2?
I’ll try. Pretty damn difficult to get those trucks together.
Howdy. Sadly, good luck finding a new truck without the fancy tech.
Of course you bought wrong BUT you
bought was available to make videos!! Now buy a TRD Pro and make more videos!!!
Buying 1/2 ton truck and stressing about mpg is kind of dumb.
That says a lot about the buyer🤣!
The TRD Pro Engine Undercover is a single plated piece😅😅
This dude loves hi bred!
TRD pro. Resale holds better and it’s unique. Not many tundras on the roads and you have a TRD Pro.
trd pro is a buy
Hahahaha I'm watching a video on two different Tundra trucks and RUclips puts a commercial for the F150. Oh RUclips!
LOL.
Excellent!!!
You’re not going to bring water to the firefighters in Gering?
That fire was weeks ago now. They had tons of supplies to help with the fire.
The more you know star...loved it! HA HA!
I used the heck out of it on our off-road videos. It’s cool, but not omg 😎 - ruclips.net/video/zz5T_qjyWk8/видео.html
Can't buy a truck in North country without auto 4wd . Sorry toyota.
Ride could be difference in shock absorbers between the two.
Nice review.
I wouldn’t buy a hybrid unless it got me another 5 mpg at least. More stuff to go wrong there’s already enough tech and twin turbos with problems. Hopefully a PHEV soon before they go all electric tundras
Regular engine has more than enough power for me,
I wish they would bring these out to Australia.
You did all that and then you didn't fill the tank and get a real MPG measurement?
The pump wasn’t accurate at all so we cut that part out. Likely a faulty gas pump. I’ve been doing these tests for years and it happens more than you’d think.
@@Pickuptrucktalk I guess it happens.
Since you strive for accuracy. The 3 lights above the grill are NOT marker lights, nor are they identification lights per FMVSS 108…They are just bling in a blatant attempt to copy ford.
Ford could never!!! YODA Will always be number one.
k. u want a 🍪?
Maybe I'm an outlier here, but I think the 2022 Tundra looks like a Taco on steroids.
You should stay in a midrange truck. Above limited model is fewer viewers.
Thought it was just me who noticed similarities to the Chevy.
all that extra HP and torque and it can only tow like 55 more lbs????
Towing isn’t only about engine performance. Lots of factors.
The limited off road best price
Tim is buying something with a diesel for his next truck. That’s my guess!
Only if you have money to spend and if you like it. I don’t have money for it
TRD PRO!
Do you have to use premium fuel on the TRD PRO?
No.
Is Toyota tundra for sure
New fullsize truck are varying degrees of jokes. They're getting way too expensive, and keep getting lower and lower to the ground. No way would I would pay $70k for truck with 9" of ground clearance.
Trd pro!!!
No one can afford new trucks anymore! 60 to 70K per truck.
You bought the right truck. TRD pro is not worth the money.
Pro all the way, babe 😂
TRD pro
These are over priced Toyotas. Who in the he'll is paying these prices. How about some production.numbers on the different models
As far as mpg goes Toyota didn't engineer this engine for fuel economy. So far I'm only getting 2 MPG more than I was with my 5.7
@@kst338 my point exactly, I don’t foresee this engine being as reliable as the 20 year old 5.7, only time will tell though. I wish you and your new Toy the best though. 💯🤙
@@kst338 This makes no sense. They definitely tried to engineer for better fuel economy and failed. "The real world" mpg's aren't even close to rated. "Wait until it's broken in!" What a joke, you're not gonna gain shit. Way more expensive, less reliable and all kinds of compromises. Maybe they'll do better on the 4th gen in 15 years!
@@ultraneight I should have worded that differently. Fuel economy wasn't their biggest concern from what I read. What's less reliable? This engine hasn't been out long enough to determine that. Funny thing is, 90% of the people bashing this new generation hasn't even seen one in person never mind drive one. I had my 5.7 for 3 years. Needed a timing chain tensioner @ 60k miles. That's a pretty big job. The 5.7 had a great run. Time to come out of the stone age. This truck shits all over my 3rd gen in every category so far. Time will tell as far as longevity goes.
TRD Pro for the win!
Out of these two trucks, I'd get a V8
Tim, time for a new Silverado or new Colorado, if the new updates are available.
Both the Tundra's are nice.
Frigging trucks are expensive. Thank you Brandon!
Mostly cosmetic differences in reality...
