John Williams may be the greatest composer of our time.
Without a doubt.

Yes!
Danny Baranowski.
Beautiful symbolism in this soundtrack. Like Rey, it starts out curious and innocent. As it develops we see Rey is quite a tenacious girl who is rather practical regardless of her poor circumstances. She has a knack for learning things eerily quick that would take others years in order to ensure her own survival. Very fitting piece for a great female lead.
+Aaron Francis I agree! I've seen a lot of people say it sounds Harry Potter-ish and while I don't think they're wrong, necessarily, I think there's more to it. The celesta and whirling flute sounds are not just "magical" but also delicate and intriguing. Williams said recently about it that “It’s an interesting challenge with her because it doesn’t suggest a love theme in any way. It suggests a female adventurer, but with great strength. She’s a fighter, she’s infused with the Force, and it needed to be something that was strong."
I think he's spot-on. It's really a wonderful new and very original female theme for Star Wars, and maybe the disappointment is that it doesn't recall that kind of masculine bravado and brute strength of the great epic Star Wars pieces. It's a little more sensitive, a shy and thoughtful theme, doesn't immediately call attention to itself, but still has the ability to grow into something huge. It can stick in your head and take you on a musical journey with a great sense of heroism, independent strength, and forward momentum. It's perfectly suited to Rey IMO, and I think it's quite unique that he was able to write such a wonderful piece of music for a woman that does sound quite broadly feminine in its way and yet still makes you think more of an adventurous and mysterious spirit rather than the stereotypical "love and beauty" tropes that come to mind a little more obviously with Princess Leia's Theme and Across the Stars.
+Dylan Burgess it's not that it sounds Harry Potterish, it's that Harry Potter sounds Star Warsish😂😂 But in all seriousness, I freaking love this, and everything John Williams has put out. He's The Man!!
+Dylan Burgess This may be the most perceptive thing I've ever read, and all of RUclips is better for it.
This theme has been stuck in my brain for the last six days. i can't shake the mystery, the excitement, the anticipation it leaves in me.
Calm down its just music ur not in English class
+lethalpenguin61: Sure but when someone has something on their mind about something and they want it to be perceived as serious, then they'll right it with careful thought and personal dedication.
Prequels, OT and Sequels have one thing together: awesome music by John Williams
I did a rewatch of the prequels and sequels recently, and posted my thoughts on Facebook. Even if I was critical of the movie, I could always find something positive to say about the music.
I think it goes Prequels then OT then Sequels all are great though
Got that right!
Except Rogue One which is just as awesome
No doubt whatsoever. Greatest composer to ever do it
I honestly love the three stages of the main melody at 0:32, 1:40 and 2:13.
It starts out young and adventurous, and then starts evolving into a much more stronger and serious tone. Say what you want about this character, but you can't deny her theme is one of the best

It's very fitting to be honest, since the movie seven has "A New Hope" written all over it's face. It has that hopeful air to it.

+Hatted Sandwich without being cheesy and absurd! it is totally believable!
+DeltaSpartan141 Alright smart arse. It's basically the same track ;)

The track will always remind me of December 2015, a special time for me, personally.

İ dont know why but i just dont like the musics
+zingodoom There was never any doubt in my mind. The world will truly be losing a miraculous composer when he dies. Truly a modern day Beethoven.
+Star Wars the reason you dont like the musics, is not that JW lost the mumbojumbo but JarJarAbrams and his sound editing minions are stupid enough the destroy Space Opera Melodramatic Star Wars movie way. Just remember binary sunset (ep4) as you close your eyes to remember you can hear Force Theme, or try to remember Emperor's Arrival you can hear that terrifying Imperial March. Now watch or try to remember any scene from ep7, and try to remember a song any song. If you have good eidetic memory only piece of track you can remember is Rey's theme. And anyone any other director could use this pick so much better but abrams couldnt. Even OST is great another JWilliams masterpiece but without proper movie it's just senseless rhyme.
Gotta say I agree. I think the editing really harmed the music

My favorite out of the soundtrack. Loved how it played during end credits. Rey is going to be so iconic and I love how she was considered the 'newbie' out of Boyega and Oscar Issac. Usually it's Oscar Issac that steals the movie (he was AMAZING AND AWESOME THOUGH), but this time it was Ridley that stole the entire film. She surprised us, she surprised as all. And it brought a smile to my face when I heard a little boy behind me say he wants a Rey action figure. This warms my heart. Such a terrific film, of course with its flaws but damn, I loved it. Definitely seeing it again. Rey is bae.
she totally nailed it. My favourite character is still Poe but Ridley totally acted amazingly.
+Cleostabtra agreed
I've seen it twice now, and I gotta say, everyone was outstanding. Daisy was exceptional, but I was also completely blown away by Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. He was superb.
Rey was awesome I loved her. Ridley is also supremely talented this was her first major role and she hit every damn scene, feel and line of dialogue. Finn and Isaac were also fucking awesome and all of their chemistry was so refreshing and great to see after three prequel movies devoid of any chemistry and emotion. Rey and Finn have bright futures ahead of them I look forward to their futures in Star Wars and other films Isaac too but he's a more established actor already.
+Cleostabtra She was such a Mary Sue, incredibly powerful out of nowhere. The best character in my opinion was Finn followed by Poe and Kylo Ren. Her acting was very good though

@@monojuice really you didn't know?
R c nope
It’s not different it’s literally palpatine’s theme sped up
For those who dislike Rey: John Williams' continued insistence on writing music for this franchise is BECAUSE of her. Sure, he has helmed Star Wars' music for some 4 decades now, but in one of his recent interviews, he specifically mentioned that he has fallen in love with Ridley's character, and he wants no one else to write music for her but himself. And it shows with this theme: there are few in existence that sounds as unique and whimsically inspired as this.
I went to a concert in which he conducted several of his own pieces, and I heard him say that himself.
I'm not a huge fan of the character because every scene she's in makes her seem invincible or without any discernible flaws. She knows everything about flying the Falcon, trains herself to use the Force, becomes very skilled at using a lightsaber, etc. Look at Wolverine for instance - he's an invincible character in film but he has different kinds of flaws. How interesting is a character when they're good at everything?
I'm sure they'll do justice to Rey in the future films, but right now her character is off to a somewhat shaky start. But her theme is fantastic, that's undeniable.
LordStarscream100 to me Wolverine was always a boring character. Theres a billon of x-men characters that are better than him.
motor4X4kombat While he is very overused in the film series, what I'm saying is his invincibility is handled very well in the film. He's given flaws, he's not always in control of every situation that he's involved in.
LordStarscream100 i don't care. At least rey have a likeble persona, Wolverine is just a grumpy steven Wright. Also You want to know a real mary sue? go and watch cinderella 2015
motor4X4kombat What do you mean you don't care? I don't understand what you're trying to argue now.
As of now, Rey basically is a mary sue. I think that's pretty undeniable. If you think otherwise that's fine, to each his own.

+Blue Whovian Really? What about the March of the Resistance or Kylo Ren's theme? I largely agree with your statement, but I thought while first seeing the movie that those motifs were pretty iconic when they showed up.

And a sense of mystery! As in, "There is just something about her..."
A Disney Princess
Well you got that wrong didn't you haha
This song certainly captures those qualities. It is too bad the terrible writing and direction the actress was forced to follow produced a dumpster fire of a story where not one, not a single one, of these qualities, was present in the character as portrayed on screen. Running away is not adventure. Cynicism is not youth. Selfishness is neither innocent nor sweet, and blandly able to do everything and overcome all threats with no trouble and no sacrifice is not fierce. It is boring.

Hearing this in the theater, it made me think rey is full of potential, but a sweet innocent soul that's clueless to how bright her future is. That's how I interpret this theme
You can’t deny, the force is strong with all the music in Star Wars, even the sequels. John Williams has been carrying each movie from the beginning and really the silent actor in the saga.
I will never forget the chills I got when I first saw Rey sliding down the sandy road on Jakku. These are the moments in Star Wars that make Star Wars truly special!
Although I’m not the biggest fan of Rey as a character, I have to admit, her theme is definitely worthy of a Star Wars protagonist.
Her theme is literally just a sense of WONDER & ADVENTURE!
This theme makes me grieve for the Rey we never got to see. It made her seem like such an interesting potential character we could see, but we never did. None of the main characters in the sequels were actual characters, they were just plot devices. The three movies spent so long trying to explain their incoherent plots and logic jumps against the backdrop of two separate directors in a playground fight that there was never any actual time for character development, or even character explanation. The reason people hate Rey as a character, in my opinion, is because she isn't, she's not a character, she's a plot device masquerading as a character, and it makes me sad
Why not? She was a new character that people just couldn't accept just cos the writing was poor, like the prequels tbf
@@footballfan321-xt3ku the characters in the prequels (many of them) had so much more going for them than Rey. Not in theory, Try could have been just as cool in theory, but the way the movie played out, Rey had nothing cool about her wheras the prequels characters still had a lot of cool things about them
@@Jordblitz I guess so but now I'm gonna say something a lot of people won't agree with but igues sometimes it's okay to have an unpopular opinion, everyone loves the originals and rarely criticise them but they were kinda boring (in terms of action and special effects) compared to the prequels and sequels even the lightsaber battles where boring imo all that they really had for them was how detailed they were in terms of story and they were very story driven other than that they just don't have that more modern day vibe aboutthem (but this is probably because of the advancements in technology tbf).

At least most of us can agree her theme is awesome tho, right?
Edit: I would kindly ask that if you insist on criticizing Rey, please do it in a constructive and respectful manner. Thank you.
Of course!
Can someone explain why so many people hate Rey? I really don’t get it. I will admit I wish that she would have gotten more development in some spots, but overall I think she had good development. Some mistakes were made in the Sequels, but I think that Lucasfilm did a decent job with them.
According to Google, the definition of a Mary Sue is: “a type of female character who is depicted as unrealistically lacking in flaws or weaknesses”
So if Rey is a Mary Sue as so many claim, than can someone please explain these things:
1. Rey experiencing and struggling with loneliness and abandonment. (A very realistic and tragic issue for many)
2. Rey constantly feeling as though she is nothing, and trying to suppress that feeling. (At least, until the end)
3. Rey being either too down-to-earth and trusting, or too naive.
Additionally, I have several pieces of evidence that debunk many of your various complaints:
1. “Rey beat Kylo without even handling a Lightsaber”: The only reason Rey won was because Kylo was unbalanced due to him killing his father (as Snoke pointed out) Had that not happened, she would have most likely died. (And yes, this is the official reason, look it up.)
2 “Rey did everything perfectly”: No. Rey may have been skilled in some areas, but she was far from being perfect. (At least in the beginning) When Rey attempted to fly the Millennium Falcon, she had a very hard time handling it. (Not to mention the fact she caused massage property damage and barely made it out without a scratch. Tell me a Mary Sue would do that.)
3. “Rey never learned or grew as a character.” False. Rey attempted to turn Ben back to the Light Side, but Ben was unwilling to turn. From that lesson, Rey learned that you can’t trust everyone and sometimes people are unwilling to change.
But the most important thing she learned of all was that she was not useless and had meaning and a purpose in life, and finally accepted who she truly was.”
4. “Rey was able to use powerful Force Abilities without training.” Okay, but answer me this, why can Grogu use a Force Choke on others when he’s only a child? If he can do that without training, then why can’t Rey do those things too. I mean, I think it’s possible for individuals to inherit certain abilities from others. But they do still have to master them. (Plus, when Rey mind-tricked that Stormtrooper, she didn’t get it the first time)
Anakin was able to do some incredible things with barely any training too, such as guessing all the images the Jedi tested him with without seeing them, or blowing up an entire Trade Federation Battleship.
And what about Luke? He blew up the freaking Death Star just by reaching out to Obi-Wan’s spirit. Does this make Anakin and Luke Mary Sues/Gary Stus too?
Lastly, I would like to point out that several years ago, you people were totally against the Prequels, and now look at you! You’re all saying it’s the best thing to ever happen!
So what’s it gonna take before you start saying the same things about the Sequels too? Why can’t you just be thankful for what you’re given, instead of criticizing every single thing? Just let Star Wars be Star Wars and let people enjoy it.
@@mbishopp you are great

I'm not trying to convince anyone they shouldn't like it, and I wish I could like it myself, but it just sounds kind of clumsy to me. Also, key changes are never graceful in my ear.

Guys I need help. I've been thinking for a while now about this. How is it physically possible for people to click dislike on such an absolute masterpiece?
Some people accidentally press dislike when they meant like. this only happens to people blind in one eye and have that kind of milky film over the other.
I almost wanted to hit dislike when I first heard it half a year ago. But it took me just half a year to change my mind :P
The people that hit dislike thought it meant "Dis, I like".
***** But "like" is more intuitive
It's called a "stormtrooper."
I’m getting nostalgic for going to see episode 7 in cinema when I was 9

It's crazy to think that I already feel nostalgia for TFA. Going to see it on opening night with my family all dressed up in costumes, super hyped to see a new Star Wars movie in theaters. It's my favorite moviegoing experience ever, and TFA is one of my all-time favorite Star Wars movies partly because of that.

This soundtrack captures the child like innocence of Rey perfectly
Actually I thought it captured her loneliness at the beginning of the film when she was first introduced, living in that junked out AT-AT. But now that you mention it, you're right, it captures her innocence perfectly too.

Reek well...I‘m pretty sure being raped is way worse than watching a movie that Star Wars „fans“ just hate because its not how they want it to be.
I like how the song has overtones of hope, but its obvious that along with the innocence that comes with the new generation of Jedi, including Rey; the Jedi are never going to be the same again. The golden era has passed. John Williams is a true genius

Episode 3: Battle of the Héroes*
Episode 6: "The Emperor“
This so very beautifully defines Rey as a character. I also love how her theme can be heard in the background in several other scenes throughout the movie. Very well done, as per usual.
1:31 this melody moment is such inspiring
This song feels like curiosity, loneliness, and hope, which I think describes Rey really well. I love John Williams!
+202cardline I always think of her agility too with the little tunes that start the track and dance around the main theme!
And I love how the track starts off so small, and the first time you don't get the full version right away. Instead it kinda starts to back off, the melody moves down and doesn't sound like a fully "heroic" theme yet, which reminds me of Rey's own reluctant heroism. I noticed that's also the version of the theme that we hear when she's making the bread at the beginning, on the flute :)
And when it goes to the kinda transition bit with the French Horn solo at 1:21, in the movie I noticed he uses that in two scenes....when she runs away from Maz's, and when the Falcon arrives after the lightsaber fight. To me that kinda represents her "call to adventure", in the movie we hear it first when she's rejecting the lightsaber and running from it, and then the second time is just after she's defeated Kylo Ren and "accepted the call." It feels like such a bold statement and it's like it works two ways...at Maz's it sounds like a cry for help but in the forest, it becomes inspiring. And in this track, it's like once you hear the call, THAT'S when you get the full versions of her theme.
It's so thoughtful...there are so many connections with her theme in this movie and yet it also just works so great and simple as music! He has such a great way of capturing a story and expressing it without words. It not only matches Rey but to me it also mirrors the whole feel of Force Awakens, it's a theme that's overall light and fun and charming, kinda mysterious and intriguing to begin with but keeps developing into something exciting, and becomes sad and wistful as you get to the end.
The person who should've asked who Rey was should've been elderly Watto.
"Who are you?"
"Rey Skywalker"
"So do you want some podracing parts?"
"Credits will do fine"
RIP Watto
Lego Yoda *credits roll*
Yeah about watto.....in legends Maul killed him while looking for Kenobi on tatooine
Avalanche that was in legends tho, which isn’t canon
John Williams did it again. His reach went straight through my chest and touched my soul. This piece of music makes me feel a mix of super strong emotions I don't get anywhere else. It's mystery, it's hope, it's beauty, it's sadness. Every time I listen to this it just takes me back to Jakku sliding down sand dunes with Rey, storming through the desert with crashed star destroyers as our background, reaching the outpost to bargain for our share of food for the day and finally sitting in the sand with an X-wing pilot's helmet on as the sun goes down...
You summed up my feelings about this track perfectly.
+Ilkka Pättikangas beautifully said Ilkka.....nice job
The best piece of music in the new trilogy was the quiet part 2:38 of her theme. It makes you feel like there really is a whole galaxy of wonder and mystery to explore. These sequels had so much potential, all wasted.

This music encapsulates Rey's character so well. It gives off that vibe of childlike, wide eyed wonder, which is probably what she felt upon discovering her force powers. The very same powers she heard about in all the stories she grew up with, the stories she then became crucially involved in. She's a great stand-in for the fans in that sense, since most of us have probably dreamed about having force powers, being a Jedi, or at least being a part of the Star Wars universe in some way when we were younger. Getting to watch her learn more about her powers, and the path of self-discovery it took her on towards saving the galaxy is something I really enjoyed.
When I saw Force Awakens, I honestly didn't like her at first. But after watching her complete arc play out, I can honestly say she's one of my favorite Star Wars characters now. If we ever get to see Ridley return to reprise the role, I would love to see an older, wiser Rey make her comeback.
what character
Genexican she is actually my favorite Star Wars Character. I also love your own take on this theme here which was great
wtf dude that was long!
@@thekfc-kevinsfilmcommentar4855 she's mine to also your name is super long
What character? What arc? Rey is just some little dumb girl on a desert planet who, because of having a lineage of strong force usage is able to fix the freaking millenium falcon quicker than its goddamn owner, defeat the most powerful and iconic of the jedi in lightsaber combat, perform lightning strikes and kill palpatine, who should have been vapourized twice and then been in the literal vacuum of space. Rey is not a character, she is an action figure who JJ Abrams and Ryan Johnson arbitrarily change as they please, giving her new powers which don't make sense for no reason other than shock value. There is a difference between gaining attributes through fair and reasonable ways and just doing whatever the hell looks cool because "wow explosions!".
John Williams loves Rey and wants to be the only person to compose for her character.
I think it shows here.
^ This is true lol.
michael cooper k lad
michael cooper At least she has a character unlink the boring static cardboard cutouts we got in the prequels.
Darth Daddy
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA what character does Rey have? She's the most one dimensional and boring protagonist in the franchise's history. Does she even have a motivation?
Anakin is a million times more interesting than she is. Fuck, most prequel side characters have more interesting personalities than Rey.
Rey's main character traits are being a woman and being extremely competent at everything without having any precedent or explanation as to how she is.
Such a good character...
This song is single handedly the best thing to come out of the Sequel Era.
Rey's got a theme just as beautiful as her.
I instantly felt for Rey because of her lowly, lonely, and exploitative situation. Anakin and Luke had baller lives compared to her circumstances. Seriously, Luke's struggle was that he was bored. I myself can't believe I just criticized an element of ANH in comparison to this film. They really needed to nail the main character of this trilogy and they absolutely did that.
Well, Anakin was being exploited even more. He was a slave. Rey's struggle is one of loneliness. Anakin couldn't wait to get off Tatooine, while Rey wanted to stay on Jakku in the vain hope that her family would return.
+Cybermat47 well at least rey had more emotion and likablelity than anakin....and she didn't say this shit watch?v=2tLf1JO5bvE

This is one of the many new original themes in the sequels where John Williams nailed it, I don't think the sequels have as many great new tracks like the prequels, nowhere near but this theme will be remembered with time I think and will be remembered as one of the highlighted tracks of the sequel era.
But the time will eventually come where we will lose Mr. Williams but until that time be grateful he was alive to score all nine films in the saga and provided us with the sound to star wars cause without the music I dont think star wars would be as iconic as it is
Rey's Theme has that lingering sense of hope, a sense of adventure and a new journey.
Luke's theme and Rey's theme share enough motifs for listeners to draw parallels without knowing it (kinda the whole goal of TFA if we're being honest) but unlike most of TFA, this theme's melody and instrumentation is different enough to separate itself from what came before.
March if the resistance and scherzo for X-wings definitely match battle of the heroes and duel of the fates tbh
I love how you hear that little bit at the end of the recent D23 trailer. I'm glad that John Williams get to finish her musical journey

A lot of haters claim Rey's a Mary Sue. She's not. A Mary Sue is someone who is so flawless, so perfect, so powerful that every character fawns over her and she has perfect upbringing.
Rey's not perfect. She started out on a shitty, bomb-out (but really pretty) desert planet where she has to scavenge for scraps to live by. She makes mistakes, like when she accidentally releases the Rathtar. She runs away from fighting Kylo Ren (twice). She's just as surprised as the audience about how she got the Force. She is however loyal and kind to her friends. And unlike some other "strong female characters" who act like emotionless robots or being dicks, she can actually grief for death or hurt of her friends.
Having an allegedly Skywalker legacy is the one thing that she almost make her being a Mary Sue, but she's not there yet.
+Zedfinite No œne is saying, but she's totally Lukes daughtee. Only a Skywalker could be that powerful with no training.
+Fldmjsw Yeah, she was just too strong in the force without even being trained and even though Kylo Ren was injured (the pos)she held her own in their lightsaber fight. Well, she whooped his ass. Cousins shouldn't play so hard.
+Brian Mc Master And m yeah, she immediately learned the Jedi mind trick . You can't tell me that she isn't a Skywalker.
+Zedfinite A lot of people miss what is implied in the vision she had when she touched Luke's lightsaber. I don't see it so much as a vision, rather a flashback to memories she repressed as a child. She appears about 5 or 6 years old when left on Jakku, which we know from the prequils is old enough to train as a Jedi youngling, even with a lightsaber. This explains why she took to defending herself with a staff. It was a subconscious decision and felt natural for her. I predict that she will make herself a double bladed lightsaber, much like Darth Maul's, but with blue blades. And her fighting style will not be crazy choregraphed like the prequils. Back to the vision, or flashback. She was there when the Kylo and the Knights of Ren arrived and slaughtered all the Jedi. She was hidden away for her safety, and also witnessed Luke arrive and collapse in grief. These memories were too painful for her at that age, and she repressed them, along with her training and knowledge of the force. The Force Awakens; the title of the film is the key to understanding this. Her training and skill that she learned when she was young is awakened by her experiences in the film. Piloting the Falcon (Jedi are usually skilled pilots), touching Luke's lightsaber and the vision, her conversation with Maz Kanata, having her mind searched by Kylo Ren, her use of the force mind trick to free herself, and her fight with Kilo Ren and him reminding her of the force. When Snoke says "There has been an awakening. Have you felt it?" This is much like the emperor saying to Vader, "I sense a disturbance in the force." That disturbance was Luke. The awakening is Rey.
I agree, she is the powerful awakening in the force. No training and already that powerful.
