I'm so glad that Kaiba is on this list. This show definitely deserves the spotlight, and I hope someday you can make a separate video delving into the great lore of Kaiba, and it's crazy plot twists!
I recommend Planetes. Why? Because it's like Space Brothers, except it actually has an ending. Also the OP is like the Opening to Enterprise(showing the advancement of exploration) only better. Also Gunbuster/Diebuster. You don't need a reason, just go watch them.
I'm REALLY glad that you mention Dennou Coil. NOBODY knows this anime and it makes me super sad since this is my personal number one of all series that I've watched (and I've watched A LOT). Cool that I'm not the only one that know this anime :')
I WAS THE SAME. I was beginning to think the anime didn't exist or something since I couldn't talk to ANYONE about it. Although for me it's not my number one, but it is my top.... five?
You perfectly captured my sentiment on him mentioning Dennou Coil. If they're finally doing an official NA release as he says, I can only hope it gets picked up as a catalog title on Crunchyroll so I can finally just say "Here's a link, go watch this now!" The only series I've had more trouble getting people to watch is Monster. Also, Dennou Coil's OP *really* needs an analysis vid, which I really hope he's going to eventually do.
I LOVED Dennou Coil! What he doesn't mention is how...good it makes you feel. The main characters actually look and act their age. They really get the feel of running around town with your group of friends down. Of course, all of their adventures are, ah hem, augmented by the AR, and it has an interesting plot, but some of the slice-of-life bits of the show were my favorites. It's a true science-fiction show though, so even the slower episodes have an interesting spin to them.
OH MY GOD SOMEONE IS FINALLY TALKING ABOUT LEVEL E!!! I've been trying to get people to watch this show for AGES! Basically since it first came out (which admittedly isn't that long ago but still)
Dennou Coil was amazing. It's about time it was licensed by someone. If the BDs are under $50 I might pick them up. Not a ton of disposable income at the moment.
Could you maybe in the future bring up the name of the show again near the end of it's segment, or a a list to the description? I wanna hear your summary first, before deciding if I note add a show to my list or not, and in such videos I almost immediatly forget the name once it isn't shown anymore, therefore I always have to pause the video, go back to start of the segment and then back to the start of the next segment when I am interested in a show.
I appreciate the constant use of Ace Attorney BGM as well as the spoiler skipping thingy. Great video as always and I'm positively surprised to see Tokyo Magnitude on this list!
This probably won't be seen but.. where is ''Space Dandy''. it is the most underrated masterpiece you probably never bothered to watch. everything about it is perfect, from songs that make my ears orgasm to it's gorgeous animation, and don't get me started on the comedy and the drama. Just watch it.
Gargantia on the Verduous Planet is one of the most classic character-centered sci-fi stories I have ever seen or read (and I've read all the classics). It not only is amazingly written and beautifully animated, it catches you by surprise at the end as you realize it's actually a story about what it means to be human - as an individual, a society, and as a species.
Oh my. When I started watching this I was thinking to myself "I wonder if Captain Tylor will be in here... nah, there's no way." Then you started talking about the Space Opera genre and I got kinda excited. THEN you actually talked about it and I lost my shit.
OH MY GOD I'M SO GLAD YOU WENT OVER DENNOU COIL! It's my life's duty to make people watch it, and you summarized it in such lovely terms. I also hadn't heard that it was being licensed, which is SO EXCITING!!! I really hope it does well, it's such a good show and one of my very favorites, it doesn't deserve being so obscure.
I was so happy you just mentioned Dennou Coil, but informing me it's coming out on Blu-Ray NEXT MONTH? This may have MADE MY ENTIRE DAY! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Checked out Captain Tylor. The premise had me hooked at first, and the comedy DOES start out rather strong, but I made it to episode 3 before it started getting old. "TYLOR DOESN'T CARE FOR REGULATIONS!" "TYLOR IS SUCH A SUCKER FOR PRETTY WOMEN!" is pretty much all the comedy by that point. He doesn't even really have his own goals to bumble towards, he's just... There. I like the idea of a guy bumbling through a space opera through pure luck and changing the tone of the plot by his very existence, but there needs to be more than just that going on to keep me interested. Still, I like it when people cover older anime that slipped through the cracks! Hoping for more lists like these from you in the future.
Episode there are a few episodes early on and a bit in the middle section that just drags, but the really hilarious episodes and the actual episodes near the end with feels in them, are done AMAZINGLY.
So awesome seeing some that includes Anime made before 2010 lol. Sometimes feels like most people don't even know there was anime before then. Judging by your lists you seem like the type that would really love the Project A-Ko series.
*cries softly while my insanely long PTW list gets ever longer* that said, these were some interesting and very unconventional recommendations! Great video.
I just happened to watch Level E's third episode right before this video and I can only agree. This was certainly one of the best plot twists I experienced in quite a while. The more I hear about Dennou Coil, the more interested I get, so I'll check this one out once I' finished Level E. The other three were on my list anyway, so thanks for the recommendations, or, in my case, a friendly reminder.
One show I was actually expecting for you to mention (for whatever reason)was Infinite Ryvius. But, Dennou Coil is another cool one to recommend that wasn't on my mind when I clicked on the video. Also, I love how the AA music fits here.
+Prideful Master +memphis407 It's a shame how obscure the show is. I could see it being liked by many people but lots of people don't know about it. The main thing the drew me in was the dynamics between all the kids. I heard it was similar to Lord of the Flies, but goddamn lol.
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is my absolute favorite anime series, it is amazingly good and I never pass an opportunity to sing the show's praises. I've shown it to many people and nobody ever comes away unsatisfied. Also debating with friends on whether or not Tylor is a genius or a fool is gobs of friendly fun. On this list Dennou Coil is my second favorite. I'm mad they released it in 2 separate Blu-ray sets, though, that's a little hard to afford.
Oh my LORD, thank you, Mother's Basement! I had actually seen two episodes of Kaiba at a friend's house years ago and I didn't remember what it was called. Only that the series was really trippy and WEIRD. Likening it to an art house or college experimental film is pretty spot on. You will either enjoy it or be like me and just be "what."
Immediately clicked the like button when you mentioned Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. I feel like nobody knows that anime and it's really good. I'm looking forward to checking out The Irresponsible Captain Tyler at some point. I also added Level E and Dennou Coil to my list. Thanks for the interesting recommendations!
Planetes is also a hidden masterpiece that many people didn’t know about. It’s also about a relatively near future where space travel becomes common, but the space debris becomes a big problem. The story follows the debris cleanup crew, which is considered a lowly job. The fantastic world, moving characters and stories, stellar animation and soundtrack really makes it a fucking magnus opus. I am aware that I am biased but this show is one of my top series of all time, even beyond anime series. I really hope people give it a check.
Yuasa also did an episode of Adventure Time called Food Chain, the one where Magic Man turns Finn and Jake into caterpillars, plants and birds to experience the circle of life. One of my favourites and wouldn't have been anywhere as good as it was without Yuasa. Has his style and everything.
Thanks for mentioning Dennou Coil. Some worthy mentions: Valerian (because Time Travel is Sci-Fi); V.O.T.O.M.S. a brutal realistic interstellar mecha show (Armor Hunter Mellowlink is a worthy sequel); Gasaraki, also a brutal semi-mystical-mecha story; Future Boy Conan (Master Miyazaki does Waterworld, only better); Uninhabited Planet Survive!;
YES. There's a new Crest of the Stars manga series coming out right now with some solid art, and I'm hoping that it might spur interest for another season.
Captain Tylor is my jimmy jam. I actually was reminded of Macbeth a little (is Macbeth sane or insane vs. is Tylor a genius or an idiot). It gets really unsuspectingly political later too.
Few things: - Why did that tachicoma have to blink? It's a robot! - 'Garbage light novel harem' *shows SAO*. Thank you Based Geoff. - 'Think accelworld but not garbage'. I like this.
Irresponsible Captain Tylor is one of my all time favorites that I just stumbled into. The underlying question of whether Tylor is a strategic genius or the luckiest bastard this side of Lucky Ted makes a lot of the scenes even funnier.
Watching this back 2 years later and I realize that you kinda say that it was a post-star wars sci fi craze that spawned stuff like Yamato, but the reality is that Yamato started in '74 and Star Wars didn't come out till '77. Not a huge deal as I think its a relatively fair assumtpion to say Star wars was in part responsible for the sci fi boom in the 80s, but when its a simple matter of dates you should probably get this right. (Not that any of this matters on a 2 year old video anyway, but I saw it and it bothered me)
I've had Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and Dennou Coil on my list for years (although really hesitant to actually watch the former, for fairly obvious reasons), but you successfully sold me on the other three on this list. You had me within the first sentence of Kaiba - post-singularity? Yes, please. I'd actually heard the name Irresponsible Captain Tyler before, but didn't know anything about it before now. Thanks for the recommendation.
Video 2 of 2, you've gained yourself a subscriber sir. Please, what ever your method is for how you choose what anime to share about, keep it up. You are the Punk Rock Rebel in a digital sea of "cut-pasted xeroxed and plagiarized" content.
OMG somebody FINALLY talks about Irresponsible Captain Tylor..! I thought I was the only one because I have never heard anyone talk about it, but it was genius!! I even got my anime club to watch it I liked it so much....
I cannot thank you enough for bringing attention to Kaiba. Planning my own video series that'll lead up to it, as it is my absolute favorite piece of the medium, and it's just nice for it to get some love since it, too, has yet to see a North American release. Closest we've come is Siren Visual with a Region 4 DVD, but what I would not give to have the money to purchase its rights and dub it myself, man. All good recommendations here, too. Some I need to check for myself.
You mentioned the Incredible Captain Tylor. Instant Like. And for anyone looking for some more recommendations, I suggest Saikano. It's status as a Syfy might be questionable given the sheer impossibility of the physics but nonetheless it is quite an interesting show and only 12 episodes to boot.
Fucking great list mate! AND ABSOLUTE RESPECT FOR MENTIONING TYLOR! Like holy shit, that has always been one of my faves. Every show in this video is pretty damn good
I'm surprised he didn't mention Jyu Oh Sei: Planet of the Beast King, or Seikai no Senki Banner of the Stars. Their animation was really nostalgic feeling like something from the 70's and 80's .
Just curious if you heard of/seen Martian Successor Nadesico? I think that it's a series that might be worth a watch for people who are tired of the same-same tropes in Sci-fi shows, it still holds up today.
I think most people do not actually get what is going on in Dennou Coil. You have reminded me that I need to make a video explaining what is actually going on. The short of it is, what we see in that anime is not augmented or virtual reality in any sense that we have seen before in Sci-Fi or the real world.
Have you ever considered or would you ever be interested in providing recommendations for anime to watch just for the story? Like, not necessarily genre bound but just general anime that are overlooked but which have really riveting plot lines or compelling story ideas? Also, I think it'd be cool to have a video for hidden gems of the mystery genre.
Dennou Coil is such an awesome anime. Also if you liked Summer Wars it feels similar to that. Kept telling people about it when it was new, and looking forward to the next episodes released. While it probably has more episodes than it needs, they are all solid and some are REALLY great
I hope you'll link the times in which you start talking about the next series, I usually like hoping into a series without knowing much, the less the better; I already trust your recommendation sometimes the first 5 seconds of the recommendation can be enough for me, and I'd like to hop into the next recommendation
1:27 wait aren't you forgetting that a 9.0 hit the city (plus a tsunami) 5 years ago? Or are you talking about the fact that Tokyo might be an epicenter for a big earthquake?
I typically focus on your seemingly-stream-of-consciouness-speech that's clearly drafted several times because it takes a lot of effort to follow you. And then I hear Ace Attorney music.
Aah, Dennou Coil was something I found on a whim. I thought that the style looked similar to Digimon so it may be worth a shot. Oh boy, was that ever a right decision. This show pulled at my heart strings, from scared to crying to hysterically laughing. Compared to Digimon, Dennou Coil is more serious and dark while also keeping the playful, childlike theme. I really wished it was more well known. I hope Mitsuo Iso gets another chance at directing because, damn, Dennou Coil is good show!
watching Dennou Coil per your recommendation. i don't think it's as objectively great as you say it is, but subjectively i'm enjoying this a ton! spirited away, digimon, and summer wars are all some of my favorite animes, and so i'm really happy to see another good series in this mood space. thanks for a great recommendation :) p.s. the facial hair episode is one of the funniest episodes of anime i've ever watched.
Mother's basement , can you do an OP review for Assassination classroom? Especially the last season's OP. I think Funimation has it on their site for premium members, but maybe youtube has some vids too.
Don't know why these aren't in the description: 1. Tokyo Magnitude myanimelist.net/anime/6211/Tokyo_Magnitude_80 2. Kaiba myanimelist.net/anime/3701/Kaiba 3. The Irresponsible Captain Tylor myanimelist.net/anime/569/Musekinin_Kanchou_Tylor 4. Level E myanimelist.net/anime/9834/Level_E 5. Dennou Coil myanimelist.net/anime/2164/Dennou_Coil
I couldn't agree more an Dennou Coil. It's a fantastic show and bit of sci-fi. I'm really happy we finally got an official release in the US so I can own it and so more people can see it.
9:58 Well Digimon Tamers kind of gave a pretty good idea of how Digimon would be if they became real IMO, heck they even explained how they'd become physical beings
Dennou Coil is so underrated it hurts
Indeed. It's mind blowing how it was snubbed.
@@kirbyjoe7484 Seriously. I'm still amazed it got a solid dub.
Mmmh... It's not necessary underrated but underknowed if that make sense
And Netflix just released it along the new Mitsuo Iso's anime - The Orbital Children.
I'm so glad that Kaiba is on this list. This show definitely deserves the spotlight, and I hope someday you can make a separate video delving into the great lore of Kaiba, and it's crazy plot twists!
I'm a simple man. I see someone mention Irresponsible Captain Tyler, I click like
I second that.
how irresponsible is he tho?
Very, here's a link to find out. It's legal to watch on here for free. ruclips.net/video/HdvNYHoB5qk/видео.html
"he gets by dumb luck" what part did you not understand?
i didnt actually watch the full video. only some parts
I recommend Planetes. Why? Because it's like Space Brothers, except it actually has an ending. Also the OP is like the Opening to Enterprise(showing the advancement of exploration) only better.
Also Gunbuster/Diebuster. You don't need a reason, just go watch them.
I second Planetes.
I can reassure you, that this man is right.
Planetes
I also back this Planetes recommendation
Maybe it's just because I'm a space nerd, but I always watch the opening, so epic!
I'm REALLY glad that you mention Dennou Coil. NOBODY knows this anime and it makes me super sad since this is my personal number one of all series that I've watched (and I've watched A LOT). Cool that I'm not the only one that know this anime :')

when i first saw the Microsoft Augmented Reality Glasses, i first thought of Dennou Coil.

It's nice, except for when it gets really, REALLY mean just for a second a couple of times.
OH MY GOD SOMEONE IS FINALLY TALKING ABOUT LEVEL E!!!
I've been trying to get people to watch this show for AGES! Basically since it first came out (which admittedly isn't that long ago but still)
I know that fell. Im happy
Was it really not that long ago? Cuz it sure as hell feels like it.
level`-E is masterpiece i dunno why peeps are not paying attention to it
Three episode rule, skip it.
Dennou Coil was amazing. It's about time it was licensed by someone. If the BDs are under $50 I might pick them up. Not a ton of disposable income at the moment.

Your picks made me happy. I have see all these except Level E, and I'm going home after work to look for it.
Bless you for mentioning Irresponsible Captain Tylor! Also, I love that Dennou Coil-to-Spirited Away transition.
God, I really need to watch Kiba.
I like to pretend he is "The Dude" Lebowski, because Tylor just Abides. But that's just my opinion.
The first 4 episodes are character introductions with Tylor injected to unify them to some extent. The main plot kicks in around episode 5
Just watch. Persevere. Youll endure it for sure. And youll see its 26 eps of sheer brilliance. 😁
So awesome seeing some that includes Anime made before 2010 lol. Sometimes feels like most people don't even know there was anime before then. Judging by your lists you seem like the type that would really love the Project A-Ko series.

Man, I wished Ryvius was on here. Barely anyone really takes about it despite being one of my favorites
I feel you man, its one of my top 5 anime and every time i mention it like no one has seen it
+Prideful Master +memphis407 It's a shame how obscure the show is. I could see it being liked by many people but lots of people don't know about it. The main thing the drew me in was the dynamics between all the kids. I heard it was similar to Lord of the Flies, but goddamn lol.
+WalkingGirlKoi I stand by the show having some of the most realistic characters, to the point where it hurt knowing how similar I am to some of them.
Prideful Master the realism of the characters make it so much more believable and makes you think what would you do.
10:25 I saw what you did there. Great cheeky transition! :D
I avoided your spoilers for Level E then went ahead and watched it. It was quite good. Many crazy twists and turns throughout.
Magnitude 8.0! Kaiba!? Dennou Coil?! I'm liking this channel more and more! Keep up with the great content!
Ahh I love Level E
It has such a great opening too! I hope you do a video on it one day!

Irresponsible Cap Tylor is one of my favorite Animes. It's good to see it get a mention.
"Think Accel World but not garbage"
SAVAGE
I admit, that was savage, but what was so bad about Accel world, I quite enjoyed that anime.
The bad part was the school life with all its cliches, everyting inside the game was a really good action show
+GinHindew110 I agree on that part, but a show shouldn't be call shit just because of having some cliches, I mean not everything can be unique.
Its fine to start with a cliche, it is wrong to finish with a cliche
TheKalluto I think he just hates it because it has the same author as SAO
Thanks for ICT. It's just like how you describe. Some hidden gem apparently I decided to give it a run. Was not disappointed at all. Thank you Geoff!!
Somebody actually mentioned Patlabor in a video, my life is now complete.
Now for that Soul Eater remake.
SENTAI JUST LICENSED DENNOU COIL
YOU DID IT, GEOFF

I'm so glad you mentioned Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. I find that to be a criminally underrated anime that deserves more attention.
"Frankly irrisponsible", lol. I love your quirky humor and ability to manipulate words.

I'll have to consider these. Irresponsible Captain Tylor is so good. Really wonderful characterizations for the entire cast.
Already seen 4 of 5 mentioned series and couldn't agree more with your words. Good joob of introducing those niche anime to the crowd.
Man Level-E doesn't get the love it needs... One of the most particular and interesting anime out there
Magnetic Rose. Somehow nobody seems to be aware of it's existence. Maybe the best scifi-anime piece ever.
THANK YOU
Woah woah little far. But i geuss we all lime different stuff
Dennou Coil was hilarious. Comedy gold.
Now I have 200 shows to on my to-watch list...
I have over 500.

You had me within the first sentence of Kaiba - post-singularity? Yes, please. I'd actually heard the name Irresponsible Captain Tyler before, but didn't know anything about it before now. Thanks for the recommendation.
I've already watched more Captain Tylor than I'd like to admit since watching this vid. Thanks
You mentioning Gantz brings hope that there may be an episode of it in the future.
Sorry man, too busy buying Zero Time Dilemma to buy Dennou Coil. I hope you understand.
O shit same
Love the underlying Phoenix Wright music. Great video!
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 was sooo good :P
The last few episodes really picked up and gave me a surprising and satisfying ending.
I still love The Irresponsible Captain Tyler. The destroyer battleship Tyler leads is called The Gentle Breeze (Soyokaze).
Ahh, Captain Tylor... the nostalgia...
The princess was my first platonic crush when I was 6...
No Planetes ?
Dude that anime have great story , strong MC , awesome OST/OP/END and satisfying ending.
2:44 The concept reminded me of Bakuman's "The World Is About Money and Intelligence"
"Darker Than Black," you'll get the love you deserve some day.
Yeahhh
I think most people do not actually get what is going on in Dennou Coil. You have reminded me that I need to make a video explaining what is actually going on. The short of it is, what we see in that anime is not augmented or virtual reality in any sense that we have seen before in Sci-Fi or the real world.
Planetes is a Goat series.
Dennou Coil and Kaiba too! Those are great series. I've heard good things about the others on here too.
Kaiba is a really good series.
The first few minutes uses Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney music! Its track 5 (IIRC) Trance Logic!
Something tells me your gonna have a field day with the OP for Re:Zero
Dennou Coil is such an awesome anime. Also if you liked Summer Wars it feels similar to that.
Kept telling people about it when it was new, and looking forward to the next episodes released.
While it probably has more episodes than it needs, they are all solid and some are REALLY great
I hope you'll link the times in which you start talking about the next series,
I usually like hoping into a series without knowing much, the less the better; I already trust your recommendation sometimes the first 5 seconds of the recommendation can be enough for me, and I'd like to hop into the next recommendation
And then I hear Ace Attorney music.
it makes me so happy to see Dennou Coil get a mention in a top sci-fi list
thanks for putting the titles in the comments
Level E!!!!!! holy shit this is the first time I see someone talking about it on youtube, i'm so happy 😭 truly an epic troll series.
You haven't seen tamers have you.
YES!!!!! FINALLY ANOTHER GREAT ANIME RUclipsR MENTIONED KAIBA!!!!!.
I'm glad to see Tokyo Magnitude getting some love! It's so underrated
watching Dennou Coil per your recommendation. i don't think it's as objectively great as you say it is, but subjectively i'm enjoying this a ton! spirited away, digimon, and summer wars are all some of my favorite animes, and so i'm really happy to see another good series in this mood space. thanks for a great recommendation :)
p.s. the facial hair episode is one of the funniest episodes of anime i've ever watched.
Mother's basement , can you do an OP review for Assassination classroom? Especially the last season's OP. I think Funimation has it on their site for premium members, but maybe youtube has some vids too.
Please review Stellvia, it is a great sci-fi anime that deserves some love.
Don't know why these aren't in the description:

I couldn't agree more an Dennou Coil. It's a fantastic show and bit of sci-fi. I'm really happy we finally got an official release in the US so I can own it and so more people can see it.
9:58 Well Digimon Tamers kind of gave a pretty good idea of how Digimon would be if they became real IMO, heck they even explained how they'd become physical beings
you're one of the few anime youtubers who has good taste in anime (a.k.a you don't only talk about shitty moe blob stuff)
ever heard of a series called dennou coil? it's a contemporary sci-fi about kids with AR goggles, and has an interesting tone.
