It's always kind of wild to rewatch these and step back into a time when My Hero Academia had not yet become something that even the most casual anime fans are aware of.
Geoff, bro, you missed out by not watching more of Big Order. It turned into the most batshit crazy hilarious trainwreck I've ever seen. To give you an example, at one point the MC got the miko girl pregnant by touching her bunny ear ribbons. As in, he touched them and then the next second she was like 7 months pregnant. Then after a couple episodes it just sort of...went away. It was amazing.
It became an adventure to see how much worse it could get and boy did it deliver. I remember face palming in the episode after she's pregnant where at the very beginning she says something like "the baby went away" just wtf?!
Noct Smurf Yeah same. For all it's flaws Future Diary had some cool and interesting stuff so I enjoyed it, but Big Order has nothing cool or interesting about it so it just became a train wreck. It was fun to watch how bad it got though.
Flying Witch had some of the best comedy bits I've ever seen. No beats were too long or too quick, every moment felt engaging, and none of the gags overstayed their welcome. Top that off with an overall peaceful, calming feeling... Man. It was a great way to unwind after a long week of work. I'd sell my kidney for a second season.
My Hero Academia was by far my favorite of this season. People keep calling animes a "generic shounen" like it's an insult, but with Boku no Hero, it's a compliment.
I suspect the problem with Boku no Hero Academia was that since they only had one cour to adapt the manga they couldn't find a decent stopping point. They had to either go slow and stop at a bit of an odd point or go super-fast to adapt the entire arc after that. They probably chose the lesser evil.
It's a common problem with adapting ongoing work. Adapt now to take advantage of the current fan base and have to deal with not knowing all that's going to happen or wait and probably produce a better product because of it but miss that initial sales boost. Of course Full Metal Alchemist just went and did both :P
Man, I am SO STOKED for when Mob Psycho ends and you can delve into that OP - they incorporate so much information about the characters and the series that I can't help but get excited (and laugh a lot) every time it plays. I'll be checking out quite a few of these shows, thanks for delving through garbage to show us what's good, lmao.
Here's how you do a jojo fight: 1) Something happens that you can't explain 2) You meet the opponent's stand 3) You try to survive against the stand 4) You figure out the stand's ability 5) You try to survive against the stand again 6) You overcome the stand/Get away from the stand (B.I.G. style) It's this formula that makes JOJO so good, as half the fun of a stand battle is the MC figuring out what the hell his opponent is doing. It also makes situations like Ringo from part 7 so interesting as the guy just literally comes out and says what his stand ability is and it's your job to figure out how the hell you're suppose to beat that. If you're gonna have game breaking super power stands you save them for the end; and even them you have to make your villain interesting.
FINALLY someone who says something positive about Kabaneri. It's not that bad, people are just mindless sheep hating on something because someone said so. I like it, I wouldn't have cared to post if you DIDN't like it. It's not perfect but...NOTHING is perfect.
I really enjoyed Flying Witch because around that time I had a lot of things to do and I wasn't getting a lot of sleep, which led to me getting tired and depressed. The pleasant encapsulation of a quiet but cheerful life of the characters and the artwork made me feel good inside, and was what drove me to keep trying week after week. The music was also pleasant to listen to and really made me feel like it was Spring. I really liked the characters' designs and their personalities (especially Chinatsu), and its what made the anime seem all the more like it was actual people living through their lives. Thank you Flying Witch for the good times, and I hope that I never forget you.
I'm kind of disappointed you didn't touch on Tanaka is always listless outside of mentioning it when talking about Sakamoto, it was by far my favorite shows of the spring and it combined with flying witch made weekends in the spring season that bit more relaxing and laughter filled.
I'd actually love to see him do Perfect Insider. Maybe even both OP and ED since they're each better analysed in their entirety rather than moment-by-moment and shot by shot.

Keep in mind, the way Ushio to Tora episodes are organized/truncated/summarized six year run on Shonen Sunday syndication is made by the artist himself, Kazuhira Fujita. He wanted to make sure the anime covers the whole manga, as opposed to say, Jojo system (animate in parts and finance the sales for previous part for the later part). It's in semi two part (26+13ep) just to accommodate for production schedule. The first try on the title back in 80's only lasted three volumes, five episodes only.

My Hero Academia has two BIG arcs right after the first season ends, so I think the pacing issue is because they stretched out that first part of the manga to fill all the 13 episodes. If I was on charge of the anime I would choose to do something like KonoSuba and just end at 10 or 11 episodes, but I guess that's not always an option
Just to compare, the first season ends at ch. 21 of the manga, while the next arc starts in ch. 22 and ends in ch. 43. It would be kinda impossible to make the plot go faster without either cutting short the number of episodes or going with a slower pace (or making fillers, but those are kinda hated by everyone)
I still don't get why people like Kabaneri so much. It is basically Attack on Titan without all the fun creative stuff. The unique titans are now just regular zombies. The 3D maneuver gear has been replaced by regular swords and guns The Walled city has been replaced with a boring grey train and there is also barely any mystery left. Though the animation is pretty nice.
Attack on Titan is fun and creative? Okay, sure, I think that AoT is actually one of the most overrated anime ever and Kabaneri at least has the decency to be visually interesting. Also Titans are just giant zombies, the only interesting thing about them is how their drawn, and Kabaneri does that better too.

Flying Witch was just what I needed after a long day at work. I was sad when it ended but was glad to of had it. Thankfully Sweetness and Lightning has my back.
Luluco got me more emotionally attached to a cast of characters in 30 minutes than Kiznaiver did in a whole season. Kiznaiver's op was pretty great tho.
Speaking of Sakamoto, the show comes across as a "funny because it's weird" type deal at first but as the show progresses it hints at something subtle and cleverly implied throughout the show, with the most strong suggestion being during the finale. I feel like that would be a very interesting Further Analysis-type video that Mother's Basement is best at. I won't spoil what's implied throughout Sakamoto, but once it hits you it's pretty clever.
Yes Luluco. Luluco is so god damn fun. Luluco might be the most fun-per-minute I've ever had from an anime. Hell, it might be the most fun-per-minute I've ever had watching ANYTHING. Definitely better if you're familiar with Trigger's previous works (especially season 3) but either way I highly recommend it. I had a huge smile on my face from... well, maybe not start to finish because the first two episodes are pretty tame, but definitely for nearly all of it.
Stop referring to things as shounen when they're not. If the anime's manga source material was published in a shounen magazine it is a shounen. It is a demographic for manga, not a genre. Why do some people still not know this?

Shounen is a demographic, if a piece of work is advertising for, serialised or distributed in shounen magazines, imprints, products (in the case of toy shows) or otherwise it's shounen. The only shows he labeled that do not originate in such a way are Kabaneri and possibly Endride since Kabaneri was an anime original (but was mostly advertised through shounen magazines) and Endride's product hasn't come out yet to be defined (though it's again fairly obvious who the demographic they're going to advertise to are).

subscribed because of your recommendation of Space Patrol Luluco, i watched it today before i went to work today and as a fan of Trigger and eater eggs I was not disapointed. I also enjoyed Kiznaiver and can't wait for more Boko no Hero Academia
+waffleman13 Well let's see: -underground urban setting: check -wacky characters with superhuman abilities: check -shady organizations and conspiracies: check. But the difference is that Durarara actually has personality. It's got a unique storytelling style and the characters are interesting and unique. In Bungou you just have a generic shounen MC with huge plot armor and the rest of the cast consists of disposable one-dimentional characters.
Im glad you're talking about Ushio and Tora, Nobody i know gave it the time of day and I loved the show. Unfortunately the 2nd season felt extremely rushed maybe mothers basement can shed some light on that.
I've got to ask, you talked about how CNBT (Part 4's first OP) was a bit disappointing, but what are your thoughts on the 2nd OP? I keep on rewatching it because holy damn the visuals and the artistic symbolism/hints at the story were out of this world.
It actually reminds me more of the rocky movies, no lie. Not to mention the protagonist's distinctly balanced win record, which is actually kinda rare, usually they either do nothing but lose until near the end or are super OP the whole way through.
Joker Game was like the only show this season that I thought looked good enough to watch. And to be honest I thought it was totally worth going out of my way for.
I can't believe Geoff dropped Joker Game... I admit it's really slow, but it was a revolution for me on the way it portrayed spies. It was a very "realistic" way, that shows the imperfections on the life of a spy, in contrast to the spies in Agent 86, Ocean 11, James Bond, Salt... And what made it even better was the fact that it was an anthology: each episode is told by a different spy's point of view, so you get a waay deeper analysis into the world of a spy, and into a pre-war world as well. Although not every episode is perfect, there are unforgettable things there, and relatable characters made to be common enough to be forgotten, since spies have to look ordinary. IMO, a brilliant show, but not the best thing you'll see.

I don't know if you've seen it or not, but there is an anime called Akatsuki no Yona, or Yona of the Dawn, that I'd really like to know your thoughts on. It's from a year or two ago, so not super recent, but it's one of my alltime favorites and i don't hear a lot about it. people compare its premise to Arslan Senki, but I think it has a lot of great and unique parts to it that make the two shows distinct
Watching this in 2022 it’s kind of hilarious how he talks about my hero academia. Something that’s gonna transform into one of the biggest animes of all time got a silver medal for its first season. There’s some real unintentional comedy here.
Yes, Luluco was amazing, and Kiznaiver's OP was god. What was kind of cool was that they both got me during the run to finally watch Little Witch Academia and to watch Inferno Cop, which I enjoyed immensely and made Luluco better. Also, both series cross overed with which other, Luluco appearing in the last episode of Kiznaiver.

Have you actually stuck with Berserk? It has gotten much better. The animation although an eye sore, has improved, as well as the directing and story.
It's not great, but it's watchable; Berserk is so good that not even a poor adaptation can ruin it too much

I really liked Bungo Stray Dogs in the end, I was quite glad I stuck with it. On first impression it was fairly generic and predictable though.
Lost Village was barely holding my interest and I just decided to drop it eventually.

Yes Luluco. Luluco is so god damn fun. Luluco might be the most fun-per-minute I've ever had from an anime. Hell, it might be the most fun-per-minute I've ever had watching ANYTHING. Definitely better if you're familiar with Trigger's previous works (especially season 3) but either way I highly recommend it. I had a huge smile on my face from... well, maybe not start to finish because the first two episodes are pretty tame, but definitely for nearly all of it.

Stop referring to things as shounen when they're not. If the anime's manga source material was published in a shounen magazine it is a shounen. It is a demographic for manga, not a genre. Why do some people still not know this?

Shounen is a demographic, if a piece of work is advertising for, serialised or distributed in shounen magazines, imprints, products (in the case of toy shows) or otherwise it's shounen. The only shows he labeled that do not originate in such a way are Kabaneri and possibly Endride since Kabaneri was an anime original (but was mostly advertised through shounen magazines) and Endride's product hasn't come out yet to be defined (though it's again fairly obvious who the demographic they're going to advertise to are).

But the difference is that Durarara actually has personality. It's got a unique storytelling style and the characters are interesting and unique. In Bungou you just have a generic shounen MC with huge plot armor and the rest of the cast consists of disposable one-dimentional characters.

Im glad you're talking about Ushio and Tora, Nobody i know gave it the time of day and I loved the show. Unfortunately the 2nd season felt extremely rushed maybe mothers basement can shed some light on that.

I've got to ask, you talked about how CNBT (Part 4's first OP) was a bit disappointing, but what are your thoughts on the 2nd OP? I keep on rewatching it because holy damn the visuals and the artistic symbolism/hints at the story were out of this world.

It actually reminds me more of the rocky movies, no lie. Not to mention the protagonist's distinctly balanced win record, which is actually kinda rare, usually they either do nothing but lose until near the end or are super OP the whole way through.

I can't believe Geoff dropped Joker Game... I admit it's really slow, but it was a revolution for me on the way it portrayed spies. It was a very "realistic" way, that shows the imperfections on the life of a spy, in contrast to the spies in Agent 86, Ocean 11, James Bond, Salt...
And what made it even better was the fact that it was an anthology: each episode is told by a different spy's point of view, so you get a waay deeper analysis into the world of a spy, and into a pre-war world as well. Although not every episode is perfect, there are unforgettable things there, and relatable characters made to be common enough to be forgotten, since spies have to look ordinary. IMO, a brilliant show, but not the best thing you'll see.

I don't know if you've seen it or not, but there is an anime called Akatsuki no Yona, or Yona of the Dawn, that I'd really like to know your thoughts on. It's from a year or two ago, so not super recent, but it's one of my alltime favorites and i don't hear a lot about it. people compare its premise to Arslan Senki, but I think it has a lot of great and unique parts to it that make the two shows distinct

Watching this in 2022 it’s kind of hilarious how he talks about my hero academia. Something that’s gonna transform into one of the biggest animes of all time got a silver medal for its first season. There’s some real unintentional comedy here.

Yes, Luluco was amazing, and Kiznaiver's OP was god. What was kind of cool was that they both got me during the run to finally watch Little Witch Academia and to watch Inferno Cop, which I enjoyed immensely and made Luluco better. Also, both series cross overed with which other, Luluco appearing in the last episode of Kiznaiver.
