Somewhere, somewhen, a women lay, dying on a bed in some hospital. A man entered the room. He looked familiar, wearing a brown, casual suit with some great, great hair. He came over, the women barely able to register his movements. He leaned forward, touching her forehead with his hands. And then, for one moment, for one shining moment, she remembered that she was once the most important women in all of creation, her mind burning with images of impossible and amazing things. And then, she was gone.

What really kills me about Donna's fate is that she had such low self-confidence to begin with, and when she finally believed herself to be brilliant and special, it all got taken away from her. By the Doctor of all people, the man who she trusted with her life. And she's back to "shouting at the world because she thinks no one will listen". So no only did she lose her memories, she lost her sense of self-worth.

The Doctor didn't do it because he wanted to. He _had_ to. Otherwise, she would have died.
The parting grace I can take out of the whole situation is what he said to her mother. To treat her better, like she matters.
Because she does. She's the most important woman in the entire universe.

This is the one song on the soundtrack I can't bear to listen to. "Doomsday" and "Vale Decem" are generally viewed as the saddest, but both of them are bittersweet: although the characters of Rose and the Doctor are leaving, we know that Rose will continue to live on and well in Pete's World, and a new Doctor is coming to take Ten's place who will journey on. Donna, however, gets no continuation: her adventures, her personal growth, and her last-minute discovered importance was made as though it never existed, and she regresses to exactly how she was before. Donna Noble deserves the world, and she doesn't get anything of it.

    • @AfraidMonsters

Very true. It’s like a fate worse than what rose head, or maybe even a fate worse than death. To become someone you used to be, and have not progressed or become better and less angry at the world at all, and never know you did all these things.
I cry every time I watch doomsday or hear the music.. but now I agree with you there. And this music is indeed truly heartbreaking too

I think Donna represents a lot of people perhaps very many - those that think they're nothing special and nothing will become of them, but in one way or another, they have their own brilliance, and to one if not more people, they are the most important person in the entire universe.
One of my favourite lines was from Donna's mother - after being initially shown to be somebody who had a rather strained relationship with Donna, with disappointment in Donna's life decisions and was a bit of an unlikeable character, but redeemed herself when the Doctor said "for one moment she was the most important woman in the entire universe" and she says "She still is, she's my daughter", with such maternal pride.

+Assoluta So true. Donna is possibly my favorite companion of the New Who series because of her relatableness. I admit I'm a lot like her, I don't think I'm very important though I want to be, and I wish my life was more exciting. I still don't know what I wanna do for a career (I'm in college btw). Goddammit Doctor Who, goddammit.

Assoluta Kinda sad how when it comes to it, you could argue that Donna didn't care about all their crazy adventures, but rather that somebody could make her feel like somebody, as opposed to just some temp as she'd put it.

The sad thing is that the tragedy of her character is what makes her so great (and is also probably the reason I didn't appreciate her when I watched it as a kid when it was originally airing, because I didn't get it). Because for one moment she was the most important person in the universe only to regress back to being what she was when we first saw her.

Donna was the best companion. She had fun with the doctor and challenged him. She was strong and brave and then she had the saddest exit. Rose was sad but in the end she got a doctor, who could grow old with her and love her, Martha got Mickey, and still got to save the Earth but Donna, she got nothing, not even a scrap of the doctor and it was so sad that a brilliant companion had to go the way she did.

It's absolutely heartbreaking, knowing that she doesn't get a scrap of the Doctor, yet also never being able to come to terms with it, as she's _still_ _alive._ And I hate and love RTD for it.

I hate this episode, absolutely hate hate hate it. By far the saddest ending for a companion, and probably one of the most polarizing as well. Like he can compose a song and that song will tell you almost everything about the scene without you having to watch it. This man is a legend… Doctor Who will NEVER be the same again. EVER.

This episode was doubly depressing because Donna had the most horrifying ending or forgetting everything, and her family had to watch her forget. And then there's Rose and the Doctor. Rose got the Doctor (sort of), but the Doctor was just... left to watch. And I suspect that for the rest of her life Rose will feel some guilt about how things ended up, and Donna will keep feeling like there's something just on the edge of her mind that she can't quite recall.

I may sound stone-hearted here, but I never got sad about DW until this episode. Rose? When I saw Doomsday, I knew she was still fine in an alternate universe (in DW). Martha? She just... left. The Master? I didn't really like him until I watched the episode again. Then I was sad. Still, he's a Timelord. He can regenerate. He can come back somehow. Lynda? Astrid? Both not there long enough. I never really saw enough of them. But Donna... She can't remember. She can't even think of all the good times she had with The Doctor. That just seems so sad to me; all the others can remember. Tate and Tennant were 'molto bene' together.

It's been *years* and every time I watch this episode I still cry.
Donna was my favourite companion and she was honestly the one that represented everyone the best. She didn't want to be loved romantically by the Doctor, she didn't even want more or less. All she wanted, all she _needed_ was to feel special. Someone with such low confidence and low self-esteem, being swept away by the Doctor, finally believing she's important for something, and then having it taken all away. It's honestly the worst fate out of all the Doctor's companions. She's back where she started.
And the worst part was she didn't want to. Every time the same line kills me: "I was going to stay with you forever." _Was going to._ No matter how tough Donna acted or how sarcastic she was towards him, it doesn't change the fact that they were going to be two friends, traveling in space, forever. Donna finally found a friend that she loved, and then she was ripped away from him.
    Never Forget Donna Noble.

I emphasize with her character so much .. I didn’t realize that back when I first watched Donna’s episodes and I was younger. Now I recognize how stuck and bored she felt.. but most of all feelings like you don’t matter.

To me Donna's ending with the Doctor was both horrible and heart-breaking. It feels like that there are many Donna Nobles in the world who feel like they have no true importance in the world at that moment but they may have an importance in the future. It could be from anything from standing up for someone or stopping a thief from robbing others to something big such as stopping a terrorist or saving the world. But sadly like Donna's time with the Doctor, it may be only for a short while before they have to die and could be forgotten.

This season gave me so much feels. The feeling when he has no companion anymore again and that Donna forgets everything. It's a feeling that is worse than what I felt on Doomsday. I just can't accept it! When I was planning to watch season 5, I didn't feel like continuing to watch Doctor Who that time. So I went asleep and even dreamed of Doctor Who and Donna. When I tried watching season 5, it just makes me so sad and gloomy. I need to get used to 11th doctor and accept what happened to season 4.
    Sorry, Doctor Who really carried me so much because this was one of my escape to reality that I can't hardly accept what happened. ;__;

Donna Noble; the most important woman in the whole of creation, yet still doubts whether she is good enough. A song that will always be sung throughout the univers, but will never be heard by her. Her time was filled with adventure, danger, excitement… but her menories have been perished and if she ever remembers, she will die. She is known as the most important woman in creation by everyone and she knows nothing, living her life as it was… like nothing even happened.
