@ej4439 Yeah bro. Same, I spoke with Lexus a couple of months back and they said they were looking at bringing in the petrol hybrid version in Q2 25. No go with the petrol V6 unfortunately. I told them this is insane as the vast majority will want the petrol v6 for towing and will buy the Prado if they want a bloody hybrid. It will be interesting to see how well it sells in Australia. 0 to 100 faster than a Walkinshaw VL Group A SS.. Incredible that an out of the box 4x4 is faster than the quickest car made in Australia in the late 80s
I live in Australia and have a Ranger Raptor with a similarly thirsty petrol engine... 80 litres is more than enough for every day use. ULP is everywhere and filling up takes a couple minutes. Even at 15L/100km you're going to have a safe 400km of range leaving around 20 litres in the tank. I've done big road trips in V6 and V8 Commodores and found even they were livable with a 400-500km range. You just stop at every servo you see when you're on an iffy leg and splash a tank in it. If you don't have enough range, chuck a couple of jerry cans in the back of the ute (or on the roof of a wagon). No big deal.
The trailer brake controller is an optional extra here in Australia. It's just a rebadged RedArc TowPro Elite V3 - you can buy the towpro yourself and just purchase the installation bracket and wiring harness as a kit. The kit won't be available until later in the year (2024) according to Chatswood Lexus Service.
I love the Prado, but that 2.8 diesel is just a big no for me. Such an expensive car and feels like you're still driving a Fortuner or Hilux. Drove the GX550 and its night and day. Pleasure to drive vs a bit of a pig on the road.

Modern 4wd vehicles are really very capable. What is clear is that drivers do not understand what settings to select for given road conditions. When Car Experts do not automatically select the best setting for the conditions, it is clear that the manufacturers and sales staff are failing in the all important area of providing driver information and training. It would be good to see car reviews where the drivers are from the manufacturers and know how to get the best out of the machines, and that knowledge is passed on to new comers of four wheel driving.

The biggest WORRY i have though.. is that there is no option for a BULLBAR and every aftermarket place i have contacted all say they have no plan to develop one. n
I liked the look of these but the interior and performance fall short of my Defender (is cheaper however...) Yep, think I'll order another Land Rover next year!
He said he gets mixed results using the crawl control from various Toyota vehicles but I never hear him say that he dropped the tire pressures at all, which would play a big part in the tires getting the traction they need to perform properly.
If you’re a family with a boat/caravan, etc. I can see the sense in the Lexus with it’s 3500kg towing. If you’re just after a family vehicle, the gigantic price hike over a similarly sized Sante Fe or Sorrento is so hard to justify these days. Would love to see a comparison on each of those tops spec models and the reasons as to why the Prado/Lexus is so much more expensive.
Do you guys think it’s better to have a center locking diff or both center and rear. The Prado’s in my country doesn’t come with rear locking diff. I’m thinking I might as well order in a GX overtrail just to know you have it when you need it twice a year.
You cant say the end of Land Rover until you own, drive and live with one. Having three generation of LR, I hardly believe any brand can make similar "feel" of LR
Well Paul impressed with the reviews But as we know Australia is a big rock and a long way btw fuel stops. Assuming range will be a disadvantage for those country buyers not to mention towing will further challenge klms and range Are they likely to offer reserve tank options??
Wondering why you had mentioned Defender in the title. All offroad features included with Defender are as good as their reliability and we already know they keep failing. Why would anybody looking for a comfy offroader consider Defender in first place? The last thing you want out in the wild is your car going to limp mode. However, if you have a LR service crew following you during offroad adventures then yes, Defender is a great choice.
I think it looks great. But I’m not sure I’d take it over a Defender for similar price and equipment. The Prado is more appealing since it’s roughly 30k cheaper than the Defender. Also Lexus with 6 month servicing intervals is ridiculous
Going by the US reliability surveys that engine has a few design flaws…maybe not Ranger 3.0 crankshaft snapping, but I think more head and valve train related

But people keep sprouting about how reliable Toyota's are 😂 and they can't seem to come up with anything else positive to say except 'resale value'. My lifes too short to drive a boring Toyota built on a foundation of antiquated technology
If you are paying $100k+ for and off-road luxury, I'd prefer the LR Defender, it's got the style and less thirsty. The GX front grille just looks cheap as the Toyota LandCruiser.
It looks like the GX460 has more space in the second row. Unless you plan to have three kids across the back seat the 2nd row captains chairs are a great addition.

I saw one of these in white pass me on the road. The hood / fender gap really jumped out. I can't unsee it now! It doesn't seem as obvious in the other colors.
An off road and back road 4wd without a spare wheel is a sure way to get stranded in the wilderness. A puncture repair kit will not fix the kind of tyre damage one gets from sharp rocks and tree stumps. No spare wheel, no deal.
For something starting at $128,000 it's pretty plasticy and crap inside, regarding the plastic side steps you mention these will be replaced by someone going off road, NOBODY buying this is going off road, let alone changing side steps, Toyota better pick their act up quickly, the Chinese variants are years ahead of this one inside. In white with all the cheap looking unpainted grey plastic it looks like an old entry level Landruiser.
This is for boomers with multiple investment properties. "Judging" others is their strong suit so relax they are not gonna do any off-road stuff. If you've got such in-laws, you get to see this vehicle on your driveway once in a while. Learn about it while you can 😂
I have been hearing same thing for many years yet nobody can beat toyota in sales hard working does not give a fuck about plastic for them reliability is important
Any reason why the GX media videos in Australia where just released now? I thought the GX was released in Australia a few months ago. I even saw one on the road in Newcastle NSW back in August. I would not thought the one I saw was a test vehicle as it wasn't camouflaged.
I'm an overtrail owner in Sydney. There was a delay on the delivery for a few months, but most deliveries started in late August/early September. Not sure why they're releasing the press videos now.
Toyota makes great 4WDs but always more expensive than equivalents. The "Defender" is great to drive on and off road but not with LR reliability track record. If I was going throw that sort of cash I would definitely go for the Toyota.
@sylviam6535 reliability? Toyota are certainly challenging themselves on that recently. I don't subscribe to the blind toyota loving that many do based on perceptions from decades ago. I've got a new defender and build quality is excellent. While they deservedly have a bad name for reliability, land rover do seem to have picked up their game in recent years. Reminds me of the ol mitsu challenger from the rear.
I'd love to see an off road review of the sport luxury. I'm keen to know if it's still capable without the rear diff lock, and multi terrain select. No one seems to be reviewing it off road?
Wow, Toyota(Lexus) managed to get the Cruise control on the steering wheel rather than on a stalk. The rear seating looks like its from a ute.
Brilliant review, my black GX OT is due end of Dec, cannot wait! 😀👍👍👍
Hi Paul will you be tow testing the GX or are you under the option that it’s will tow like the LX ? Cheers
I picked up my GX550 a week ago. Fuel isnt as bad as i thought (around 11.7 combined after dricing approx 850kms so far) , but its not frugal by any strectch either. The biggest WORRY i have though.. is that there is no option for a BULLBAR and every aftermarket place i have contacted all say they have no plan to develop one. n
Keen to know if it runs on 91 or 95?
@@chrispaterniti8142 95 minimum
@@chrispaterniti8142 modern Lexus never run 91
I liked the look of these but the interior and performance fall short of my Defender (is cheaper however...) Yep, think I'll order another Land Rover next year!
Awesome wagon.. 👏👏👍
We need it here in NZ 😢
This is not even the same type of vehicle as a Santa Fe. It’s basically between a Prado and a Land Cruiser, but petrol.
Comparing a sorrento/santa fe to a Cruiser/Lexus is like comparing tinned tuna to caviar.
@@MrWah79 years ago, I would have completely agreed. Progress is progress. The justification of the badge is just not there anymore.
@@pete6234 - They’re not even the same type of vehicle: SUV vs. 4x4.
600 kg payload, put 350kg towbars, yourself, missus and 2 kids with camping gear and you are over the gvm. Who said this is for towing?
Looks like the rear wheels were nearly lifting off the road under braking? Would be interesting to see in the dry
Do you guys think it’s better to have a center locking diff or both center and rear. The Prado’s in my country doesn’t come with rear locking diff. I’m thinking I might as well order in a GX overtrail just to know you have it when you need it twice a year.
@@rollsroycenetwork1221 you could buy the prado and get aftermarket front and rear lockers
Thank goodness the front grille smile was relaxed a bit....not perfect, but an improvement in visual appeal
You cant say the end of Land Rover until you own, drive and live with one. Having three generation of LR, I hardly believe any brand can make similar "feel" of LR
Well Paul impressed with the reviews But as we know Australia is a big rock and a long way btw fuel stops. Assuming range will be a disadvantage for those country buyers not to mention towing will further challenge klms and range
Are they likely to offer reserve tank options??
Aftermarket, similar to what some companies are offering for the Raptor.
Can you please add noise level in the excel sheet?
the blank is because of the 12v cover, so that it can slide out of site.
Hi Paul. What brand and pattern tyres are on it? Thank you!
Going by the US reliability surveys that engine has a few design flaws…maybe not Ranger 3.0 crankshaft snapping, but I think more head and valve train related
It had a manufacturing flaw, not a design flaw, and that’s been rectified so no GX550s are affected anyway.
You have to wonder how on earth could Toyota end up with close to 100k engines possibly containing engine filings? Recall order is out in US…
@@BW-nd5ucThere is no recall on GX engines in the US
@@BW-nd5uc no recalls on the 24 GX models,,, those are built in Japan, the trucks affected are 22 & 23 models not built in Japan, the issues was caught. This engine was first used in the LS sedan in 2017 and was tested to a million miles... no issues with the GX.
But people keep sprouting about how reliable Toyota's are 😂 and they can't seem to come up with anything else positive to say except 'resale value'. My lifes too short to drive a boring Toyota built on a foundation of antiquated technology
Was there a timestamp for the road noise? I think I missed it and now I can’t find it 😅
Damn thts fast for an SUV tht size ❤❤❤❤ and the fact it's a Lexus we can count on it for reliability
could you say more about the "particulate filter? is that an in cabin air filter or what? I have not heard of it from other reviews, was just curious
Paul can you tudo a hill test where you don't put the car in low range and don't lock diffs just wanna see how much of different it does
If you are paying $100k+ for and off-road luxury, I'd prefer the LR Defender, it's got the style and less thirsty. The GX front grille just looks cheap as the Toyota LandCruiser.
Just hope this comes to the UK
It looks like the GX460 has more space in the second row. Unless you plan to have three kids across the back seat the 2nd row captains chairs are a great addition.
What happened to wooden interiors?
I like this guy, he's cool
This looks much better than the new prado, idk maybe the prado looks better in person??
Such a beast!
I'd buy this thing for the design alone 😍
Do you know if there is going to be a diesel versión of the GX?
When the land cruiser prado video coming out?
I would love some clarification on this remark:
"Especially given it was sort of tuned for the American market I thought it'd be a bit sloppy, but this actually feels really great."
😁😂🤣😂😁
Do they tend to like a sloppy ride over there?
Is this car Range Rover quiet when driving?
What you you buy? Lexus or Prado?
The 300 series does have the 310kW version of this engine in the Middle Eastern market
Always keep momentum. Always..
I saw one of these in white pass me on the road. The hood / fender gap really jumped out. I can't unsee it now! It doesn't seem as obvious in the other colors.
Having issues with rear door open and close. Some other issues. Running well.
14.08 the new Prado .. Yes, that is what it is.
Hey Paul, i know its weird, but how about you compare the Ranger Raptor and the GX 550 Overtrail?😉😂
Lexus GX470 from 2004 is still going strong in USA, can you name a Chinese SUV that can last half of that ?
@@tm92489- Actually, it’s for people who want a Land Cruiser, but with a v6 petrol engine.
Chinese cars are high on bling and low on reliability. No, thanks.
9:26 Nylon strap on the Sub, very cool
Love it.
is this a better car than the Tank?
Any reason why the GX media videos in Australia where just released now? I thought the GX was released in Australia a few months ago. I even saw one on the road in Newcastle NSW back in August. I would not thought the one I saw was a test vehicle as it wasn't camouflaged.
I'm an overtrail owner in Sydney. There was a delay on the delivery for a few months, but most deliveries started in late August/early September. Not sure why they're releasing the press videos now.
With the e-KDSS, could Toyota/Lexus have had air suspension or ride height control?
Lexus is just a car. Defender is a cool car, heritage, history!!!
I thought max watts were 400w?
Did you know paul the land cruiser 300 zx cost $65000 from japan so dealers take around 90% profit
Finally found my next car
Whats the driver monitoring system like of this, better than the triton 😊
they're all crap. they all need some black electrical tape
Toyota makes great 4WDs but always more expensive than equivalents. The "Defender" is great to drive on and off road but not with LR reliability track record. If I was going throw that sort of cash I would definitely go for the Toyota.
Toyota has always charged extra for their build quality and reliability. People spend a lot for these, but keep them for a really long time.
I've got a very capable 4x4 that shares a platform and power train with range rovers and its unbelievable to drive and I'll keep it that way. Same price as this lexus prado too.
@@user-pp6kw6yl6z - As you said, if that Defender turns out to be reliable, it’s a recent development. They do indeed have a bad reputation for reliability.
@@user-pp6kw6yl6z I don;t have a toyota but I know from my son who is a mechanic, that toyota reliability is starting to get tarnished.
I have the original Defender shape 2013 and yes it has had a few issues but I love it.
My cousin has the latest version which is built on the Range Rover architecture and mechanicals and he has had his share of electrical issues same ones off course as the Range Rover.
@Navigator-apex this is the exact reason I was not afraid to try something other than toyota and so far so good but at the same time fingers crossed it doesnt go bad. The defender is such a nice vehicle to drive on road as well, as it should be on a monoque platform. And your 2013 sounds great, I do think land rovers are a car you love regardless of their faults. I've had a hilux and it was far too uncomfortable and actually unreliable for me to put up with its deficiencies.
Hey Paul the rear seats don't slide but you didn't say if they recline or not . The rear seats looks to be very upright and for me that would be uncomfortable..
They announced a hybrid version LX 700h
120k 🤔 that is priced really well, 80L is a bit 🤷♂️ can always chuck long range tank in like most do if you do remote/long drives
For 1st off road test, u dont need to adjust anything in defender to overcome it
