You only upgraded the Scadutree Blessing 6 times? You call the main progression system in the game "optional" despite being an RPG veteran? And all this after giving Senua's Sacrifice 2 a glowing review? Sir, I regret to inform you that you are in the minority.

Great video, and I agree that From have peaked. They've been making essentially the same game since the original Demon's Souls in 2009. 15 years later and it's played out. They need to do something different but Elden Ring was so successful that Bandai Namco will mandate that From follows the money. I'm kind of over the whole "desolate world with a dark history featuring a lonely mute protagonist" schtick at this point. Someone needs to clue Miyazaki in to the fact that familiarity can breed contempt.

I've always hated the method of making a game harder being "make the enemy hurt alot more and you hurt alot more" like it shouldn't be an endurance test loaded with "oh shit" moments while you struggle to nickel and dime enemies who at any point can hit you with unavoidable attacks, because it wont be hard enough if you're not forced to heal. I know alot of people don't like gimmick bosses, but the old beat your head against the wall until one of you breaks has become its own overplayed gimmick. Unique, gimmicky boss fights should become the main target with wider play style variety

Mesmer, final boss phase one, and the boss from the trailer with the branch in his forehead were very fun bosses that i really enjoyed figuring out. Others like the twin moon and final boss phase two just felt cheap with the almost infinite combos and lingering hitboxes that are waiting to hit you after you dodge the initial attack and just make you want to cheese them and be over with it.
It's like FromSoft themselves are starting to fall in the same mistakes as those who try to copy them. Meaning just cheap, badly designed, artifical difficulty.
I hope they steer clear from this stuff and stay faithful to what made them classics.

  • @yagami999913

Call me crazy, but i enjoyed the DLC way more than the base game. Probably because it's smaller, so it's more polished.
The difficulty is definitely the highest in any FromSoft game/dlc though. I didn't go out of my way to find the buff fragments, ended up barely beating them with mimic tear and (+ NPC summon when applicable). And i'm really coming to the conclusion that these DLC bosses are balanced for multiplayer. I always solo'd FromSoft bosses even in Elden Ring base game so no oxygen waster is gonna make me doubt my skill at these games.

I believe "git gud" or "skill issue" troll statements have changed their meaning. Previously you'll tell a complaining player to "git gud" because he couldn't beat Vordt after dying 3 times and abandon the game. Back in those times, up to BB and DS3, those two troll comments meant that you required patience to learn a fight, even if it took 1 or 2 hours or perhaps a little bit more. In recent times, "git gut" or "skill issue" means you went to a fight underpowered and you're refusing to go out and find something stronger for your build. Gone are the times where if you died you knew it was because you made a mistake, perhaps you attacked one more time than you had time to, or you missed some rolls, or you blocked too much. I had issues with Fire giant and Malenia in the base game, spent days there, because what I had in my build was simply impossible for the avg player not to take weeks there of perfectioning the fight, that's too much man. So what did it do after spending 3 nights with Malenia without getting any better? I went to find stronger stuff, didn't even know how stronger I was getting, went back, murdered poor Malenia in under 3 attempts without knowing wth I was doing. No satisfaction, no jumping or screaming, nothing. Not to mention I barely remember any boss name with the exception of Radahn, because I happened to stumble across bloody slash, and essentially closed my eyes and spammed the hell out of that sword art up un til the Fire giant and murdered every single boss without learning any enemy movement, simply closed my eyes and spammed the shit out of bloody slash. Died more fighting the abyss watchers at lvl 25 with 800 hp and my 70 damage scimitar in DS3 than I did in ER base game if you take out Radahn, Malenia and Fire giant.

To me this DLC is the definitive Elden Ring experience. If it was up to me I would play this as a stand alone game instead of having to touch the main game ever again to access it. It’s a more focused, condensed, less bloated version of ER, and honestly, I prefer it like this.
Why is the objective quality of the game what you say it is? You say people get angry at “opinions” but then again, you’re making a video telling people they’re wrong and that you’re right… I mean, why should I trust you know what you’re talking about any more than IGN? You’re just someone else with a different opinion.
And you will only die in two hits if you’re not using what the base game gave you to prevent that. There’s simple ways to go up to 80% damage reduction and survive a lot more than 5 hits against bosses like Rellana for example, and it doesn’t involve overleveling or wearing heavy armor. I can prove it.

Still, these bosses are much cheaper than those in the base game. And Malenia I actually enjoyed, even though she shit all over me for over 2 hours even with my mimic up. If Rellanna had lifesteal she'd probably be harder than Malenia lol. I was even wondering if I'm even supposed to be fighting her 2nd. Mimic, summon and me managed to break her poise once for a full fight. Considering her size that's insane. These are 3 shitstains hitting her at the same time and she just proceeds to swing away and destroy us.

  • @EvgGaar
    @EvgGaar 2 месяца назад +3

    My thoughts after watching:
    1. The fragments that decrease incoming damage are as optional as leveling up in the base game - it is the DLCs progression system. Previous DLCs were built for characters that reached softcaps in various stats and had no way to powerup, should the content be too ahrd for the player, these fragments are the way developers give players to progress even while having already reached softcaps or meta levels (which people don't want to progress beyond for various reasons)
    2. Same as with any Fromsoft game - different builds struggle with different bosses, while facerolling others. In this case there is less faceroll, since the playerbase wanted a challenging level of content (yes, the kind where you need to try over and over, to learn the fight and polish your execution), but the general trend is the same - some builds can absolutely demolish some of the bosses while mostly disregarding their mechanics, especially if the build is wellcrafted and not a product of player's fumbling around.
    3. Going into a "posion swamp" without bringing antidote-like consumables that can be readily crafted is on the player. Its not the developer punishing the player for "playing how they like (without antidotes)". Hopefully this analogy is clear enough.
In general I disagree that subjectively liking/disliking the game is absolutely unrelated to the game objectively being good/bad, at least in the context of the points raised in this video. If the game is liked by the target audience - then its doing its intended job and thus is good.
The developers have a vision in terms of difficulty and character progression in the DLC that they want to pursue with their product, and it is as valid of a choice as any. Some people will like it, some will not, but it doesn't make the game bad, it just makes it not optimized for the broad audience, but for a smaller (still very wide) range of players that enjoy this kind of gameplay.
Niche products aren't better or worse than broad ones, as long as they're supposed to be that. For a more extreme example - your house isn't good or bad based on what some passerby thinks about it, since its not built for that passerby.
Minor criticism in the video is valid though, like the critical hits/backstabbing animations that haven't been changed for over a decad and could be much closer to what is expected from a game of this caliber.

I appreciate your strong opinions as usual mate. For me I expected more ER at bare minimum, so I'll have fun with it. I already accepted the ER boss meta ages ago, so I'm not surprised that a lot of bosses have endless stamina. Over half the bosses in the base game were NOT fun to solo. Luckily I've come to enjoy using spirit Ashes to compliment my builds.

    I finished on last tuesday:
    It wasn't that hard.
I used the black knight hammer with prayerful strike. Did a lot of damage and heals. I had the super armor from that first npc boss at the start. Most times i just face tanked mobs and bosses. Mimic tear was almost invincible. He healed a lot with prayerful strike.
Also summend coop people for some fights. Like the death bird. I never tried any boss more than five times. On the last boss i used a cheat engine and made myself invincible.
At the end i was at scadutree fragmet level 18. DLC Spirit ash on level 9. I was on NG. It was still my first playthrough which i never took to ng+. Level 411. Everything on 80 except strenght, dex and arcane which where still at 30.
Also Scarlet rot is the "i win button".
I love the new butterfly incantation.
    TLDR
prayerful strike + mimic tear + Scarlet rot = you win

I feel like all the older FS games made it so that bonfires were fairly far apart and each enemy was difficult but not punishing and you were racing to get to the next grace before running out of potion uses. The extreme difficulty came from doing those long runs to need to finish a boss for the bonfire. This DLC is like playing a no-hit run.

  • @evidicus
    @evidicus 2 месяца назад +3

I haven’t finished the DLC, so I have to reserve judgement on most boss designs. But I did defeat the Black Gaol Knight on two different characters (a STR/FAI greatsword brawler and a INT based spell blade), and while I thought the boss was very tightly tuned, I didn’t consider it terrible design.
Unforgiving. That’s the word I’d use to describe the DLC. Which seems fair since you have to punch the tickets of both Radahn and Mogh, arguably two of the tougher base game bosses, to even enter the DLC. When you have a portion of your audience that has been knocking out NG+7 and pulling off “no hit” runs or beating the game on a dance pad, cranking up the difficulty seems like the natural reaction.
I get why players who pride themselves on beating these games using self-imposed restrictions might be upset. I’ve 9:46 heard things like “these bosses are bullshit, so I’m going to use bullshit against them”. But these tools have always been designed to use.
I think one major difference that helped me enjoy Elden Ring and the DLC is that I’ve never considered magic or summons to be a crutch or “cheating” or whatever the git good crowd labels them as. Any resource in the game is fair play. If I feel like going back a 2nd or 3rd time to kill a boss without summons, I only did so because I found it fun, not mandatory to keep my “Gamer Card”.
I count Elden Ring as a masterpiece, but masterpiece doesn’t mean perfect. So far, the DLC has just given me more of what I already enjoy.

  • @gabrielmartins2959

    i Honestly think that the DLC improves almost every aspect of the game like: level design being more compact and vertical as DS1, enemy variety, better caves, catacombs, ost... but i heavely agree with you on the DIfficulty Design of this DLC, it looks like they took every irritating aspect of the game and double down on that, it made the bosses seem more unfair than ever... infinite poise,1 hit KO's, more input reading than ever, its like they wanted to counter all the "op meta" builds but doing so It ended up making the game a lot worse for most "normal" builds;
I Feel like you should have a little space to breathe during the fight to at least learn a little bit of their moveset , but in this dlc you basically can't even heal once without getting hit during the fight, bosses have almost no openings and most of the times you have to trade hits; depending on your build, some boss fights can be a nightmare. Especially against rellana, there are times when it feels like you are playing a turn-based game, you dodge or defend against a combo of 7 attacks just to be rewarded with 1 hit.

    • @carlosrevolledo291
      @carlosrevolledo291 2 месяца назад +4

They don't know how to make their games harder for all the veterans, so they took the easy path: just make enemies stupidly unfair, we'll fix them by giving the player borrowed powers like broken sword arts and summons, and also by giving them broken op builds that will trivialize the, originally unfair, enemies. This way you can choose your power and your difficulty. But its a terrible idea, because I never knew how powerful I was in the base game, to the point that I either murdered bosses or got farmed for days, which meant I had to go find something stronger. Like, I died 30-60 times in abyss watchers, nameless king, twin princes, and many other bosses in DS3 with my shitty build, but those bosses were doable, fun and challenging TO LEARN HOW TO FIGHT. In ER its not about learning the fight that much, is all about learning and acknowleding that your build sucks and you need to go find a stronger one. In the end, I killed pretty much every boss in under 5 attempts with 3 or 4 bosses that where impossible for an avg player like myself to beat which was the cue to realizing that it was a power thing: I had to go find something stronger. So I did, and et voila, Malenia dead in under 4 attempts without knowing wth I was doing. Awful design honestly, I don't even want to play this DLC.

Shadow of the erdtree is what happens when you put a game above criticism and fanboys doing all sorts of mental gymnastics to defend the game like its their honor, fromsoft did a fantastic world with the open world design but whatever sense of awe you get is instantly killed as soon as you see the boss health bar the movesets, combo chains and balancing are some of the worst i have ever seen, it’s also one thing to reuse assets but to reuse the worst of the worse mini bosses and make x3 times more worse like dragons, ulcerated tree spirit and undead bird is quite baffling and makes this dlc even worse.
I just wish they put a fraction of the effort they put in the open world into the boss design and balancing, Elden ring is at odds with itself because of that.

    This DLC is amazing.
The mesmerizing entrance to a whole new playground that looks massive. Slowly finding out it has a whole lot of layers and the map keeps expanding in every direction.
I expected endgame content. A challenge. We got a challenge. It never felt RNG-unfair though like the dumbass fckin dice from Baldur's Gate or Divinity.
This is as much reactionary as planning after newfound knowledge and finding weaknesses and openings.
The new armors and weapons and spells only add to the flavor.
The bosses are hard as fck fitting to entertain those who completed the maingame a few times on multiple playthroughs.
This dlc was catered to those who wanted more.
I am a pretty baseline player and I don't have any difficulty with dying here and there by gankers I didn't expect the first time around. As soon a I get cocky I die. As I remain calm and plan I succeed. What is there to hate about that?
    And the world being empty?
This is not a Diablo-esque game or a Dynasty Warriors.
We play FromGames because we like the flavour.
The music, sounds, worlds, builds, enemytypes, bosses...
Not because we expect anything else.
Same as you didn't cry BG3 wasn't some Elder scrolls game. Larian have done the exact same with Divinity and BG. Why was this ok with them but not for FromSoft.
I love your channel. But this is a bit cringy and whiney which I did not expect coming from you ❤😅

The thing is a lot of boss can be considered bad difficulty and bad enemy design, if you were going into the boss fight, under leveled and underprepared, then of course it’s going to be more difficult, there’s plenty of people who are sticking to the so called “meta lvl” around 120 to 150 and they are also on new game +1,2,3,4,5, etc none of that is helping them experience this DLC. This is exactly why every souls game I never knew Game+ until the DLC comes out because I know this exact situation is going to happen and it’s all over forums and LFG posts on Xbox trying to find someone to help them defeat a boss because they’re on new game +7 and I’m thinking to myself. What the fuck were you thinking? Going into this contact at such a low level and on such a high new game plus. The game is not made for you to play one way only, you can play however you want and if you choose to stop leveling up because you want to be at “meta-level“ then, yes, it’s going to be more difficult.
Bum rushing the bosses without exploring and getting things to make your character stronger whether it’s gear, talismans, weapons or the new blessings is going to make it difficult just like it would be in the best game if you just bum, rushed to each boss without exploring, which is the same for almost every single other RPG game, there’s progression for a reason and that game allows you to skip some progression that they recommend is needed but it’s not necessary.
The blessings each one gives you 5% more damage negation and 5% more tack when you get to level 20 blessings that’s 100% more damage negation and 100% more damage, it can feel like it doesn’t make much of a difference but once you’ve gotten 10 you’re gonna notice that 50% damage increase and the increase to your damage negation. Because the further you get into the deal, see the more damage to enemies are going to duty and those blessings you’ll notice it the further you get into the dlc.
Yesterday I defeated Midra and he was very difficult. I died almost 10 times and after taking a break and relaxing I went back and I beat him. I did use a mimic though, because they added in the new spirit ash blessings to help you, so I use what’s available in the new DLC Content to beat the new DLC content for me that’s what makes sense.
Obviously, there’s gonna be certain builds that are going to be easier than others for certain enemies or bosses in the new DLC and for my build I haven’t had too much difficulties, The bosses are about as difficult as Malania and hoarah loux, which is doable and they have said that this DLC is made for people who have already beat the game and have a lot of experience and a strong character.
If your character is too squishy, then I would recommend leveling up your character and their endurance and faith to wear stronger armor, and cast some buff incantations to reduce the damage of those enemies and bosses, but not everyone wants to do that and that’s their choice to continue making it more difficult for themselves.
I personally don’t know anything about your build or what level you are or your stats. All of this is based off dozens of players I’ve met and seen who were having issues with this dlc

Honestly Mesmer and promised consort are my new favorite fromsoft bosses, I try to keep an open mind to see the complaints but I just don't get it. Summons shouldn't exists at all, it gave ppl the illusion that the bosses were balanced around them, which couldn't be farther from the truth since they break the ai most of the time from what I've seen. You may dislike this direction, but if you're gonna label it in general as just a fromsoft fuckup you're gonna sound like the git gut "'waste of oxygen" crowd except on the opposite end cause in the end, you didn't keep an open mind either. My biggest problem is that companies who make "souls" games are thinking that the only thing that they have to do is make the bosses as annoying and as "hard" as possible because that is the main thing in this genre. Back in DS1 somehow world building and telling a story in a defferent than usual way was more important.

Fromsoft is unfortunetely suffering from the same thing that many other game devs are suffering from in todays gaming era. With all the youtubers and information flowing around and everyone chasing the meta, games become increasingly more difficult to balance. The DLC was clearly a statement from Miyazaki to combat all the meta builds and people complaining about ER being too easy. But what happens when u balance the game around the meta is that u leave 90% of the weapons/builds in the dust. So it's become either embrace a specific meta build and blast the boss in 30 sec, or spend 10h dying to bullshit, and the problem is, neither it that fun tbh.
A game like Sekiro is how u make difficulty right, and I wish they would have continued more in that direction. In an RPG with 250 weapons people will find a way to break the game, and then you'll loose your prestigous "hard game" label that's attached to your franchise. Overall I feel the DS legacy style combat is getting more dated each year that passes. After having played games like Monster Hunter it's really hard to find any enjoyment in the DS style combat and boss designs, it's soo far behind it's not even funny. I do still enjoy fromsoft games for the world design and atmosphere, but the combat and bosses really isnt cutting it anymore.

Nothing new here, I've been both a fan and a harsh critic since DS2, but all my complains fell on deaf ears, especially on the forums because the moment you write a complaint and then prove it with video, you will still be barraged with accusations that its your fault for not knowing "the meta" or something obscure. But in the case of Elden Ring, there are no meta or secrets here, the bosses are insanely tanky and aggressive no matter what you use. Well whatever, still waiting for the day when a souls game let you move as quickly as most enemies and maybe also lets you switch between 1st and 3rd person but be primarily designed for 1st, so no more camera fkery that gets you killed. Imagine vermintide 2 combat system in a souls world, that's something I would like.

I have seen some videos of people defending this hiper agressive boss design, they claim that the posture sistem must be abused and you must use counters with and without the shield.
In this dlc they added a perfect block mechanic.
Do you think that a greater use of the aformentioned mechanics will negate your point about the "shit design" or that they just ameliorate a bit o the existing problem?
I do not have ER yet so i cant give my opinion.
Still i am curious on what you think of these arguments.

Doesn't invalidate the bad design point. It just gives you an option to mitigate the bad design issue. Good thing that there is such a thing that is a perfect block. However what if you don't play with a shield or focus on poise break? It's a game that offers wide variety of options but due to narrow mechanic designs it limits those options and playstyles.

    • @lapostetu9337
      @lapostetu9337 2 месяца назад +3

@@rpgdivision there is no playstyle that shouldn't focus on poise breaks, its a matter of playing the game right or wrong. You should try to poise break even with a dagger. Charged heavys and jump heavys are the key, there are also multiple ashes for stance breaking. Stance meter starts recovering quickly after 6 seconds so keep up the aggression even if you are low on health, its better to stance break someone than to heal and lose the build up. This is not dark souls 3, you have to take advantage of strafing, spacing and jumping too not just rolling, maybe do some parries here and there if you play with daggers. The new tear which gives you perfect block is also amazing since guard counters are very fast and basically do charge heavy damage and stagger and you don't even need a shield. The difficulty to me so far has been great, but its a complicated topic to argue about. I don't blame you or anything, Fromsoft has done no effort to properly explain the mechanics but they let you cheese the game with braindead summons. Weirdly enough I have more problems with the exploration itself, I expected the dlc to be much smaller with high quality legacy dungeons and enemy variety but it turned out the opposite.

Thank you so much for your words...
I am a Soulsfan since the first Demons Souls and loved every game (DS 2 also for its immense build variety)
And then came Elden Ring. Everyone cheered...and it felt like I was the only idiot, who strongly disliked it.
    Why?
Well, because in the Boss fights, you were not any longer part of the game. What do I mean by that?
In the old Soulsborne games you and your decisions were part of the game and the fun:
Should I try to trade this hit and gamble for a stagger?
Should I empty my stamina now because it looks like the last hit?
Can I try to bully a Boss with a great weapon (Fume knight is one Boss that can be bullied:) )
    ...
In other words: You had your 3 parameters. Skill, build and strategy.
And if you died, you tried again with a new approach.
In Elden RIng, everything was different. It basically made you the Co-Passenger in your own game. You had to learn the pattern and when the Boss allows you get one hit in. It was like a quick time event simulator. And so, for me, the fun was out...thank you again for a differrent opinion :)

After seeing some of the bosses I know I will never want to learn to fight them legit. And I say that after beating Malenia with a non-status longsword and no spells/arts/items (which really lets you realize how badly she's designed).
Very few people were critical of ER when it released. Joseph Anderson comes to mind. I knew this will result in Fromsoft doubling down on lazy difficulty and bloated open world. They seemingly learned a lot between DS3 and Sekiro, but I guess they've forgotten everything.

I've finished the DLC and I must say the main bosses are defo a 10/10 to me. The world looked gorgeous, the music was more than amazing to the point that I focused more on the music rather than fighting the boss. Exploration felt fun. The new gear is great. But the glaring issues lie really in how the world is built together. It feels very empty at times and kind of unfinished. And outside of the bosses a lot of the enemies just feel boring or copy paste-ish. Some of the laziest examples would be the Dragon fights which are mostly just reskins with some added effects, the fake crucible knights (Black knights with crucible knight theme), the Black Knights that just have Radagons shockwave effect, the two Tree Sentinels in the middle of nowhere??? I'd say that its at most a 8/10 and that is kinda generous.

The frustration with Elden Ring, people want to blindly defend and call it a 10 out of 10 when that means perfect and it just is not, not even close.
I enjoyed the DLC overall too but at least half of the bosses are very poorly balanced IMO even though there are also some really good ones. But for me, the most obvious thing that immediately removes this as a 10 out of 10 is the weapon/art/spell balancing. Everything in the DLC is faster and hits WAY harder than the base game but yet, the majority of new weapons, arts and spells are slower than a lot of base game options. It makes no sense, trying to avoid spoilers but as an example, there is a rot butterfly spell that should be good considering where you have to be and what you have to do to get it, but it's a melee range AoE that locks you into a casting animation that's longer than pretty much any spell in the base game and it doesn't even do that much damage or guarantee rot even though you will never hit with it without taking a hit and even overworked enemies can 1-3 hit kill you from full health, maxed out vigor without damn near all the Scadutree seeds. So many are like that and it makes no sense. None of the bosses have windows longer than 2 attacks unless you can stagger them but almost every new option given to the player requires a much longer window so it feels like you actually have a tiny amount of new stuff that can actually be used.

@@Ocean5ix Wasn't saying that it isn't a good game. But I remember how "perfect" Bethesda's games were back in the 2000's. I see many similarities between how people perceived those back then, to how people perceive Fromsoft games and Fromsoft now, to how Bethesda was perceived then. Comparing the Bethesda then, and it's fanbase, to Fromsoft now and it's fanbase. There's more similarities than not.

And some ER fanboys will comment "Git gud/ Skill issue" believing that a game's difficulty is directly proportional to its goodness, and that there is no problem because some guy on RUclips can beat the boss with a Donkey Kong Bongo Drum controller and a blindfold. I still stand by my opinion that Sekiro is the best product FROM ever put out simply because you arent forced to wait for openings and defence actively damages your opponent. You dont hesitate, and you feel badass doing it, while in Elden Ring all you do is hesitate and wait for an opening hoping the boss doesnt hit you out of it with some sort of 10 frame move you cant possibly react to. And yeah, you said it, hitting the boss at range while your summons tank damage just isnt fun. It feels like you arent engaging directly with the boss, but what can you do when the bosses are balanced around it?
Lies of P boss design was so much better than recent FROM SOFT, and thats a real shame when imitators are outclassing their idols.

Yeah I do think Sekiro handled it well by turning good defence into offence. It reminds me a bit of how some character action/spectacle fighter games handle defence as well.

It's like with sekiro, you're not gonna have fun playing this game like a dark souls game. It's different and you need to learn the new mechanics.

Demon's Souls remake (60fps!), Bloodborne, Sekiro would be my personal top 3. Too bad 2 of those are only on L-station. Sekiro's strength comes from it's tight design - with no additional weapons the combat system could've been designed to perfectly fit tools at your disposal. Bloodborne was largely similar in that aspect with no weapons feeling broken (some were a bit underperforming maybe, but nothing useless).
ER's weapon arts and spells have presented a lot of variety but the unfortunate result is that you cannot create a boss that will fit every build and if someone chooses to exploit the most broken stuff - there's no way to create a boss that's challenging and fair. I couldn't believe how easily some people have finished Malenia using some garbage like unnerfed Moonveil or Blasphemous Blade. They are still strong too.

I felt similarly after playing ER. Decent game, but not good Souls game. And this aoe spam and delayed attacks by every other boss were getting really cheap and annoying. Im not sure if I want to try this dlc.

it seems like they only make mistake when they go back to the demon souls/dark souls gameplay formula, because Sekiro and AC6 have amazing gameplay and the bosses are way more balanced.
