I think Bioware might fail combat design for the first time ever with Veilguard

  • Well here is something random. Tried Inquisition after a long time to see how combat was done there and to compare it to the new style from Veilguard.

    Thank you, I'm so tired of people trying to pretend this is the same as Inquisition or trying to act like there is no loss of RPG systems. It looks more shallow than Genshin Impact. The fact they chose to show a rogue in a party with 2 other rogues and there isn't even something as basic as flanking or backstabbing anymore on top of everything else. I do not see the appeal of hitting one button over and over, maybe dodge sometimes with the only minor variety being 3 skills on cool down. This combat looks as bland as plain oatmeal.

    • @VanyaSvoloch
      @VanyaSvoloch 2 месяца назад

      the dodge is just one single animation over and over and functionally is just cosmetic moving with maybe s - that was case even in DA Inquis. where the gameplay lives and die off of barrier from mages and guard off of warriors - once you're able to get your rogue guard from the tempest ability tree the game has no more depth
      at this point it just looks like EA has watered down their combat so much precisely because they can't deal with gameplay depth that is more than a shooter where you're a geriatric idiot that only think video game only involve "point, click, thing click gets deleted"

It's disrespectful to the entire concept of combat and shows a severe lack of understanding. The wokeness of it all is what makes this game the bigger trash there is. Completely unengaging characters, uninteresting even. Nobody cares about these characters, because they are simply what you would expect from woke check boxes and thats all. No uniqueness, no compelling characteristics, nothing. They are juat bland. Boring. Wow, amazing, they are ALL bisexual shizzle? How original. Environment design, character design, MONSTERS design. Damn, its all so bad that the combat is the least important bit. The combat would be completely ignorable if at least the characters, writing, anything, was just a tiny bit interesting.
    For f. Sake, there is no sense of danger at all, they are just casually strolling around throwing jokes every two words. Its like watching one of the latest woke marvel movies. No sense of time constraint, no sense of danger, nothing.
    Gosh, I could go on forever.

    • @akari6859

      But... OG Mass Effect trylogy was woke, Cyberpunk 2077 was woke, Baldur's Gate 3 was woke, Nier Replicant was woke, Netflix's Arcane was woke too and all of them have interesting and engaging characters.
      Beside that, do you have the gift of precognition if you know these characters will be uninteresting? Unfortunately, I don't have one, so I just don't know. Maybe they'll be interesting, maybe they won't. On what basis do you draw such conclusions? If we were to rely just only on appearance, the team from Origins looked much more generic, like from some DnD campaign of a beginner game master.

    • @lobobanguela6349
      @lobobanguela6349 2 месяца назад +2

      @akari6859 Saying that because it has gay stuff makes it woke is a little bit of a stretch. Were all characters non binary? No. But in DA Veilguard the Devs said that ALL characters are non binary. Now THAT is woke. And all in all, I dont really like that much BG3 characters, but the game has incredible gameplay, its really good, and its true to its nature. Also, even though I dont really like BG3 characters that much, I have to agree that they are forcefully ugly. Veilguard just forcefully made all characters ugly. Even Scout Harding, which I actually liked a lot in Inquisition got ugly now.
      Never really played Cyberpunk 2077, not my cup of tea. Mass Effect Trilogy, much like Dragon Age games, always had characters that would fit straight people, and others that would fit gay people. Nothing wrong with that. Those games werent filled with forced representation just for the ideology.
      DA Veilguard characters are uninteresting. Sorry, they might even make a semi good story for them, but books ARE judged by its cover, because that is the first impression. If the cover is bad, whats inside is just as bad. None of those characters presented actually got me interested in knowing more about them.

    • @lobobanguela6349
      @lobobanguela6349 2 месяца назад

      And golly gosh...Arcane? Jesus...all it has to its name is a VERY good animation. The story? Got me sleeping on 70% of it. Thats how uninteresting it was to me.
      It appeals to some intense emotions, but hell its got bad writing all over it. Its boring. That was woke, AND bad.

    • @lobobanguela6349
      @lobobanguela6349 2 месяца назад

      And let me put my two cents on the subject: A game having some wokeness isn't what defines if it's bad or not. But when the developers make the priority the wokeness OVER the writing, gameplay, story, and so on, that is what defines its bad. When the focus is on the wokeness only, the game will be bad.

    • @akari6859
      @akari6859 2 месяца назад +1

      @@lobobanguela6349 Ok, I partially understand. The problem is that we don't have one definition of what "woke" is. So there is room for discussion. Sorry, but I can't find where the developers confirmed that all characters would be non-binary? The only thing I discovered is that they will all be bisexual and it's not the same. By the way, all the characters in Dragon Age II were bi too, so that's nothing new, so I don't really understand the part about healthy straight people and gay people. Can you elaborate more?
      Also, I don't think the characters in Veilguard look intentionally bad. Bellara, Lucanis and Varrick all look pretty decent, but I understand that's personal taste. I can go by first impressions and not judge a book by its cover, but I understand that someone doesn't want to spend their time on it.
      Finally, I agree that the plot in Arcane wasn't very good, but the characters and their development in each episode were quite interesting.

      name a few that did ? Did BG3 do it ? Compared to fromsoft lineup ? Nioh 1 and 2 ? Monster Hunter franchise ? New FF7 remakes ? What are you smoking fam ? All the ones i mention are miles better RPGs than traditional turn based RPGs. SMT:5 revengeance is good and all but soon becomes pretty stale too towards the end just like BG3 did. The rest mentioned have 1000s of hours clocked in by the average player. Monster Hunter World still has more players than BG3 despite being released pre corona age. The latest remakes of old mana games did nothing new, the latest pokemon versions bombed. There are literally no great turn based on the market. Name at least 2 if you can please ?

      @rpgdivision  2 месяца назад +2

      Pillars of Eternity, Warhammer Chaos Gate maybe, Rogue Trader, Xcom, Darkest Dungeon, Divinity Original Sin... From what comes to mind of the games I've played.
      Depends on the game in the end. Really difficult to compare such different designs. Reason why Dragon Age is specifically compared in this video because it was once more tactical based and over time it has been transitioning to more action oriented.

    • @raptorate2872
      @raptorate2872 2 месяца назад

      @@rpgdivision The OP arguement was turn based destroys action RPGs. I never said there weren't any turn based out there, just that none on the market are good enough to beat action RPGs in terms of sales, no of active players and average hours clocked in as they are the only metrics we have to compare them. Since you are right, you can't compare them directly due to different designs, so we will have to use other metrics to see what beats what. Hope that makes sense.

    • @rpgdivision
      @rpgdivision  2 месяца назад +2

      Sure but comparing sales is not a way to go about it. There are barely any turn based game as heavily marketed as something as Witcher, Dragon Age, Elden Ring or similar games. They are way more niche than action rpgs so the sales will always skewer towards the action genre as it has better mass appeal.
      Only way to compare action rpgs to turn based rpgs is through quality of the game overall and I don't think action RPGs have a chance there due to much richer history of turn based rpgs.

    In my humble opinion, tactical camera is overrated as hell. I played all of Dragon Age game on all difficulty level above normal and as using pause and tactial camera on higher diffictulties, there were never funny to play on it. Such a combat system was neither as satisfying as in old RPGs or in Divinity and Baldur's Gate 3, where the problem was solved by completely focusing on turns, nor was it fully satisfying as a combat model more similar to aRPG. So I think it's good that they finally chose one direction, especially since imo. the active combat model was the better part than the tactical one in previous installments. What worries me the most is the reduction of the active ability bar to 3. I don't know, I find it hard to believe that the creators would be so unaware. I hope that over time a second bar will be unlocked, between which it will be possible to switch like in the Inquisition, or that some active abilities will be related to the development of the plot. Personally, I also don't have too much of a problem with the lack of blood or brutality, because it was already greatly reduced in Inquisition (I know not to that degree), and it's not known what it will be like in the final game, because in the gameplay, apart from a few Venatori, we saw a fight mainly with demons, so I don't know even if they should bleed? I was also interested in the opinion about Nioh, because although I have completed both parts, I would never say that the combat system is world-class. So I don't know, in my unprofessional opinion, the combat model in Veilguard looks at a similar level to the one in The Witcher 3 (in terms of how good it will be).
    Besides, I don't fully buy the "modern Bioware" narrative, because such thinking assumes that there is, as it were, a limited amount of talent in the world. What I mean is that if a studio made bad or mediocre games, they wouldn't be able to make something good. CDPR also started with a very average Witcher 1, Spiders also had a lot of average games until they started making really decent games, Larian also returned to form after a good debut with Original Sin I, so the fact that Bioware didn't come out with Anthem is a factor. doesn't mean it will be the same now. Of course, this may be the case, but we'll see after the premiere.
    Thank for your video.

    • @rpgdivision
      @rpgdivision  2 месяца назад +5

      About modern Bioware. It is unfortunately very different studio than before staff wise. They haven't been able to produce anything good or great for a long time now with the resources available. Not to mention their wokeness that is going to affect writing no matter how you look at it. You are right that every studio needs time to create something good but they have been given enough time and resources and failed at every obstacle. Sometimes EA was partially to blame. Maybe every time.
      Point is that if studio is consistently mediocre, which Bioware is for the last decade, on what can we cling to expecting the great change? Only new footage from new projects which is here and isn't particularly great.
      About the tactical camera. I agree to an extent with you. If you don't know how to do it then switch to something else. They did mediocre job with it in Inqusition but could've done so much more now. Problem is that as an aRPG it has very little going for it from the footage. It seems like they have picked the direction but haven't really made it better. Looks like stripped CRPG to me.

    • @akari6859
      @akari6859 2 месяца назад

      @@rpgdivision I agree to some extent, but not completely. However, I see Andromeda and Inquisition as good games. Certainly not great, but really fun to play, so I don't think Bioware hasn't been delivering good games for a decade and what killed Anthem mainly was that it was a service game and a lot of the mechanics were designed for it, but the combat and movement were refined.
      I also think that both the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series have always been woke, so this is probably nothing new in the case of Veilguard. Besides... It doesn't mean that if something is woke, it is immediately written badly. Yes, poor productions are often woke, but that's not what makes them bad. There are many great games that are "woke" - Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, etc. The Netflix's Arcane series is also turbo woke and is really decent.
      It's not like I expect Veilguard to be any great or anything. I don't assume it will be bad either. I just try not to be too hype but also not to be negative.
      As for the combat, we will find out during next gameplays or only after the premiere.
