  • In March of 2015 drum legend Mike Portnoy generously offered me one hour of his free time while on tour with Neal Morse and talked with me in depth about his career and his popularity, some decisions he made in the last few years, about prog and improvements and finally about a love we share both: MOVIES

    "The icing is nice but you gotta have a good cake first"
    made me smile, love MP. He's the guy that made me start drumming. I went through a phase where I thought he was overrated, doing the same fills and not having the best technique but then I realized I was just riding the hate bandwagon that seemed to focus on him after his departure from Dream Theater. He really is a phenomenal drummer, I see him as the Ringo of prog rock/metal. ALWAYS playing for the song and lifting it to another place with his drum parts.

    This interview made me have so much more respect for Portnoy than I have ever had. The fact that he left Dream Theater because of the negativity is fine with me. I'm happy that he's happy doing what he loves. I also agree with him about character over technique. This is what is missing from Dream Theater to this day. If Mike had never left DT then I probably wouldn't have found all of these other Prog bands that I love today because I was so obsessed with DT.

    I held off from watching this interview since it popped up on my list because I thought it'd be a whiny exercise on MP's recent drama, but his wrong was I!? A whole lot! Excellent questions and excellent answers! It is a real pleasure to see that MP actually moved on and is genuinely happy. I'm also happy with the music he's been doing, as DT's recent music is nowhere near as creative. Way to go Mike, kudos drumtalk!

I still love DT, Mike Mangini I love a lot, MP I do too, just enjoy the music and stop all this BS about who is better etc....last DT albums were amazing too, music is music....thank God we didn't see all that drama Queensryche went through, that really is sad. Klasse,
    ich trommele auch so vor mich hin, seit 40 Jahren und mache es immer noch weil es Spaß macht und ich sehe und höre die Musik als ganzes, nicht nur das Schlagzeug. Früher dachte ich auch immer, du musst berühmt werden und viel Geld damit verdienen, aber es schaffen nur wenige und das meist zufällig. Mitlerweile spiele ich mit den Musikern, mit denen ich gut auskomme und auf die man sich mehr oder weniger verlassen kann. Ich hoffe es wird noch lange so funktionieren neben Beruf und Familie.

    IMHO, Awake was Dream Theater's best album. When they started to focus more on virtuosity with Jordan's entry, rather than focusing on the songwriting, I think that's the moment Mike just started to lose the vibe. And I totally understand that.

    • @HNedel
      @HNedel Год назад

      At the time he himself was pushing for it and wanted to go where they went, imho. Six degrees and Train of Thought were all Portnoy. And even Black Clouds, but that album just didn’t feel like a cohesive and focused attempt. You had long and drawn out songs about a car accident, or about getting scared by a guy in Tuscany… it was just going through the motions. I think he recognized that and wanted a break although he was a driving force behind those last few albums, or that’s the impression i get from reading about it. But the force just wasn’t there anymore. His side projects are cool and all, but I still miss him playing stuff like The dance of eternity or The Great Debate and Glass Prison

    Hi Mike,
    Maybe you're reading this entry.
    I've long heard you in different bands. At some point I wondered what's so fascinating about your drum play? I tried to analyze it sometime. In my opinion, you are currently the only drum player to play the drums as an instrument and not as drum set! With your play you tie a composition/musik together like a missing instrument in a orchestra. You play your drums like an organ or a piano, just as an instrument. This is the magic in your drum play, for which there is no comparison at the moment. This way of playing also needs the right music, which provides space for this type of play and combines it with the other instruments of the band. I think you're on the right track with Neal Morse having found this frame. Other format like "The Winery dogs" weren't too bad either. But they didn't match the complexity of your play that makes yours unfold. Example: A much better compilation of musicians for your drum play was to be seen on the gig in Tokyo, in RUclips you can find it in "Portnoy-Sheehan-MacAlpine-Sherinian-a change of season/Acid rain (from ' Live in Tokyo ') 2012". All musicians are top class. But the composition itself is a decisive factor. I hope that this development can continue and that even more of you will be worked out. It's fascinating to see you in this band (Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Transatlantic, Neal Morse Band, ...) and listen to... This is pure innovation in drum play. These compositions offer you the space for your play.
    I love your style and your play. I hope your fans will hear you play so powerfully and virtuosoly for a long time. A very personal message: you are a person in public. I know what that means. That's why I'm asking you, don't let your soul steal.
    Yours,
    Peter

    At the one minute mark I thought at first it was a shot at Mangini but then I remembered that Portnoy was always a big fan of Mangini.

    • @sgmetalify
      @sgmetalify 8 лет назад +1

      I think it's more about he's perceived. Remember, for us progheads he isn't exactly a synonymous of the virtuoso drummer (at least nowadays) but he was and is perceived as a very highly skilled drummer everywhere and a front runner at that (Just like the whole Dream Theater, which led the whole new progressive scene we see right now, which he mentions).
      I guess it was more as a statement towards that perception and to those guys we see in the internet, who are super technical, but aren't able to create meaningful stuff, i think those are the guys he doesn't enjoy nor see purpose to.
      Mangini has enormous technique and knowledge, but he did many things with it, played with many respectable bands (even if smaller), did meaningful stuff, so he really doesn't fit the bill which Portnoy is aiming at with that statement. That's also the reason why both of them have expressed admiration and respect towards each other in multiple times.

But I have to say, this video just made me more of a pro-portnoy guy. He does catch a lot of hate which he definitely shouldn't, he's solid as fuck on everything he's ever touched. He seems like a really down to earth guy n that gets huge points!! Kudos, Mike, you're the man!!!

      I respectfully disagree, pal. I guess he meant "character over technique" in general - just his opinion - which unfortunately, for him, can be misinterpreted since Mangini is known more for technique than personality. This goes to prove what he says at 3:22 . Anything he says, no matter how small, tends to get blown out of proportion by fans :)

    • @adityatyagi4009
      @adityatyagi4009 7 лет назад

      Considering we don't know what was said prior to MP coming and saying this, I don't know how you could possibly draw the conclusion that this is a criticism of Mike Mangini. What if the interviewer had asked him "How important is technique to you?" and then immediately cut to MP's response.
      Either way, both MP and MM are much better than me and I learn things from both as well as many other drummers. Wasting time on drummer politics hasn't helped me much in becoming a better drummer and musician. :)

      It was in a show in the Philippines with his project band PSMS. He flipped out onstage because a local tech set his drumkit wrong and was messing up his performance, particularly, having the snare mic falling off the stand. In defense of the tech, he just got the diagram of MP's kit hours before their performance and was juggling duties with the other crew.
      Anyway, the fault is with the organizers for their shortsightedness on logistics.

    MESHUGGAH!!! I have to respect Mike Portnoy; he has matured a lot through the years - not to say he deserved the crap he endured after the Dream Theater departure. The charts he learned via his Dream Theater years are insane. It's important to remember all that classic Dream Theater material (Change of Seasons, Dance of Eternity, etc.) was written with Mike Portnoy. Impressive stuff...

      AND Kevin Moore. I keep repeating this and I will still repeat this, Portnoy was the heart of DT but Kevin Moore was its soul. Now it's just a showmanship of technical stuff.

    I wonder if he say's he doesn't care about technique because of Mike Mangini lol. Great interview though. I listen to a lot of Portnoy's stuff.

    It's cool he says he doesn't think of himself as a great drummer because, in fact, he isn't. Real nice cat, though.
