Mike has changed for the better since leaving DT. He is humble and genuinely wants to help others sound their best when working on their projects. Mike is so musical and you have to be born with that gift.....
also, the stuff he did with Neal Morse (solo-band, Transatlantic, Flying colors) is way better than what Dream Theater has come up with in recent years in my opinion..so a wise choice
I love all the stuff that Mike has done with Neal. I discovered both of them through the first Flying Colors record, and since then I've been super into a lot of their collaborations. Here's to many more records together!!
I wonder if I'll EVER hear a bad song by Neal. I just keep buying his discs and keep winding up delighted by every note. What a genius! (And that he acknowledges the source of his inspiration - that's great!) Not only are his studio albums excellent, but I finally broke down and bought a live album (not something I do often, as I'm not exactly rich; I really need to LOVE the artist) and was amazed at how tight and powerful they are! So much energy; and so well controlled and skillful! At this point, I wouldn't miss a Neal or Transatlantic album for anything!
I am a big fan of Neal and Mike also. Maybe the only song I don't like is Agenda. But the other hundreds I can keep in loop for years, right now listening Question Mark every day +2 times.
"Great Adventure" is the first album I ever put in my iTunes that made the play count cross the 100 mark. It wasn't even out 8 months and I had done that. I had to force myself to stop listening to it (so the rest of my music collection wouldn't go to waste). "Similitude" crossed the 80 mark.
I was also a DT fan and heard about Spocks Beard and Neal thru Mike. Mike is a true keeper of the Prog/Rock flame and has always promoted great bands. Neal and Mike are both some of my favorite musicians!
The LORD works in mysterious ways. Few could possibly have imagined that a GIANT in the music industry would grow so fond of making glorious music with a guy that he KNOWS he going to sing about his LOVE for LORD. The sheer caliber of musicians that have worked on Neal Morse compositions and collaborations is a testament to something greater then themselves.
I will always repeat that. Mike Portnoy was the SOUL of Dream Theater (he produced most of the songs and, alone, the best album of the band - Change of Seasons). He has the prog-rock soul that DT has lost to arrongace. Congratulations Mike, you are in one of today`s best Prog Bands. Forget the fame and keep being the genius you are!!!
Mike was always the guy in early DT that would write a short note back to me, answering my questions about the band. He did that twice; and then all my questions were answered! Talk about good PR!; but he was just being himself. ''tallica sure never bothered responding in *their* early days. Thumbs up to Mike Portnoy!
well I was searching for prog bands, i heard spock's beard- the light and i got impressed to... then i knew that mike and neal play together and i heard transatlantic and neal's solo albums... i got amazed!
he's absolutely right...there are 3 songwriters in my estimation that are/were incapable of writing a dumpy song...john lennon, ben folds and neal morse
Since Mike was wearing a special shirt I'll add two more. A to Z Ian Anderson to Zappa. With Morse smack dab in the middle. All three wrote songs with a religious background.
I am glad Mike is now with Neal. I was never a DT fan. Just too much bass for me. Mike and Neal are a great team and I hope they have many more years to create more projects. Leaving DT was the best decision Mike has ever made. The only thing I liked about DT was Mike and Jordan Rudess, and John Petrucci solo projects. I saw Spock's Beard when they opened up for DT. When DT did come on stage we left because after SB we didn't want to see DT play. Why? SB is so much better!
Too much Bass for DT? That's definitely a first lol. There was a time in my life the only thing I complained about in DT was the fact that the bass was always buried in the mix.
No mainstream pop artist Will be able to match the best musicians in the alternative scene. Simply because what appeals to the masses is rarely the best art .....AND the stuff they usually experiment with is super narrow in scope.

Exactly dude, exact. I ve been longing to say these words, you said it all !
Awesome !
Mike and Neal. Best musical duo ever!
For me I gained a new respect for Mike after he left DreamTheatre.

Yes it's a win win, transatlantic, neals solo and new neal morse band is stunning

Neal Morse is Amazing, The Best song writer of our time.....

@@heinemelo Ha! My least favorite NM song is also "Agenda." Whatever he was trying to do there, it didn't work.
Neal & Mike are two brave souls who left their former bands to become even more creative, productive and of course, collaborative
what a masterpieces they did with The similitude of a dream and The Great adventure!! Absolutely prog masterpieces!!!
What about the whirlwind!

Amen to that!

I'm so glad that he and Neil bhave collaborated on so much great music. I love hearing from these guys. God bless both of them.

Yup, what Mike said!
Zappa T-Shirt!!!
Guess he did mention Frank through his T-Shirt.
And yet....still no Neal on Spotify.....what's up with that!!?
He is building his own streaming platform. Called waterfall
he's absolutely right...there are 3 songwriters in my estimation that are/were incapable of writing a dumpy song...john lennon, ben folds and neal morse

Wait, why can we see mikes arms? This was prior to the sleeves?! haha
He has had the tattoos and blue beard for years.
Mike, Neal Morse is so much better than Lennon or Townshend
Maybe melodically, yeah

Mike was a lot more down to earth looking in 2008? Now he has a nose ring, tattoos all over his arms, blue beard?
mid-life crisis?
What the fuck does it have to do with being « down to earth » lol?
