- Truck fully bled out in the Lowes parking lot! Started steaming at the light, by the time I pulled into the parking lot, it looked like my truck was on fire! In this video I diagnose and fix the leak and in the process locate another potential issue with the electrical system. Solved both and the truck is back on the road.

I have a coolant leak in my 2018 Ram. I said some very bad words, but I am excited about fixing this myself. I think it is just a hose, but I got a bunch of tools awhile back and wouldn’t be too upset if I had to dig a little deeper.
I love a good excuse to buy new tools. Sorry you are broken down though! It's satisfying to fix things yourself though. Good luck, you got this!

Thanks man. I owned that truck for just over 16 years. I’ve sold it now and still see it around all the time. The kid that bought it works at Garage Grill in Herriman. Went there to eat and he was the one that brought our food to the table. Small world.
Ky jelly will be your friend in more than one tight place. FYI: Never use oil on coolant lines it chemically breaks down the rubber as you can see on his old one and the oil that was around it.
Never thought of using KY on it. Makes sense though. LOL
Don't recommend oil, small amount of Vaseline or a silicone lube are your best options!
I've replaced water pump twice gaskets, thermostat, thermostat housing and gasket , and still have a leak ! Seems to be coming from that same area as yours it's not the water pump but it's leaking somewhere around it . I have a 98 dodge 1500 sport 4x4 so only thing I can check that I haven't is that lil small hose .. at 170k miles it just may be that time I hope that's what it is and not s cracked engine block ? It's never overheated on me . I hope it's that lil tiny hose .. 😅 thanks for your video, we'll explained and very very helpful ..
It’s gonna be that hose! Be sure to use good quality hose clamps since it’s so hard to get to you don’t want to have to do it twice!

Pro tip all rubber coolant hoses I applie di eltric greese to the inside of the rubber allows for easy install and removal...

I just had my manifold intake plate and gaskets replaced over the weekend and that hose was in the kit so I went ahead and replaced it. Well, turns out I have to replace that hose as the hose was defective and has a pinhole leak.
Yuck!!! I’d hate to do that job twice in a year, let alone the same week. 🤨
2 years later. I’m the owner of a 2000 Ram. I just replaced the cooling system in it at 200k. I liked your video but I guess I look at things a little different than you. It’s all good. My radiator became restricted and I had to replace it. I ordered a new aluminum radiator, a 3 core instead of the standard 2 core. After I removed the radiator I started looking around and decided to replace the entire cooling system. I was part of the way there but it’s a lot of work replacing anything on the 5.9. New water pump, radiator, hoses, t-stat, and one other thing that I didn’t think about. The heater coil which happens to be located behind the dash. Yeah, I had to remove the entire dash to access it. It took me like forever to get started on that part. I probably put 18hrs on that part alone. Since I had the dash out I couldn’t bring myself to leave the evaporator coil for the ac, knowing what was involved in replacing it. So I removed the box that housed everything and replaced all of it. There is an upgrade for it. Put a new accumulator in the ac system, new screen and metering device, vacuum and charged it. After everything that I went through it appears that everything is working well. I didn’t see what you added to your coolant, if you mixed it with water, tap water, you should drain your system and refill it. The tap water has minerals in it that will create something like barnacles in your water ways. You have to use distilled water if you mix. Don’t use the 50/50 mix that you can buy either unless it reads mixed with distilled water. I just use the concentrate and don’t add any water. Coolant used to be called anti freeze. It was much heavier than what we buy now and required mixing. Today’s coolants are pretty thin so I don’t mix. And you shouldn’t use tap water in your battery either. We ran straight water sometimes in our cars when I was young. You would freeze up in the winter but would thaw out after the water pump screamed for a minute or two. Anyway, thanks for the video and good luck with your truck if you still have it.
Use softened water- not distilled...
Looks like a tough spot to change the thermostat too. May as well throw a new one in there while everything is apart. ???

I started to notice my 2005 ram 1500 needed coolant and today my dad noticed it was leaking so when I went to look I pretty much traced it all the way back to that hose I didn’t take anything out but this video really helped me to know what need replacing. But could you tell me what that hose was called or what to ask for when I do take ever apart
Not sure what it’s called but it goes from the supply side of the water pump to the top of the motor. A parts counter guy should be able to find an exploded view parts image.

Are there any torqued specs for the pulleys and the bolts for the ac condenser?

Cutting your brand new hose hose is not a good idea. 😕 So many other things you could do that don't risk ruining i Like you could lube it up with water. You could soften it by getting it hot at the end. I just put a new one of these 5.9 in my 03 Dakota. It's really not that difficult to require all that and mutilating your new hose.
If done carefully it’s not as dramatic as you make it sound. Sheesh I’m not Jack the Ripper after all! 🤣 It’s been fine for 80k+ miles since then. I’d rather not fight it. Work smarter not harder. 🤷🏼♂️
@@troysgarage Is smarter not harder is exactly my point. Is a little bit of water or just spit on it. That would save you anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes And there's no chance at all of messing it up. You just verified the exact point I was trying to make. that you're arguing with...

The timing cover can leak coolant because your water pump bolts hold the top of cover to block and there’s also a coolant passage at the end of those bolts I’ve seen a lot of people have the issue. Lots of people say replace the timing cover gasket when you do the pump

Yup. Left me stranded at about the 185k mark. Opted to put a factory new tranny in it and drive it forever. I think forever is coming up quick though. 😜😩

What I mean is, it’s harder than you think to remember all the technical terms for stuff when the camera is rolling. Happens to me all the time. I don’t do 15 takes to get the perfect footage, one take and keep moving forward. 🤷🏼♂️
How did you get the one bolt behind the belt tensioner?
Pull the tensioner aside or pull the bolt
At 5:30 in the video I talk about all the things that had to come off to expose it. It’s a pulley that has to be removed to get to that last bolt. (Sorry for the delayed reply)

The angle of the pics must have thrown you off. It was a dogleg pipe, both the old and the new. Not sure which you thought was wrong. I think the old part was just so old and had been overheated too many times it ballooned out of shape real bad. Either way it’s fixed now.

I know us truck guys always joke about the other makes, but seriously, this Dodge has 297K miles on it. I've towed more Fords to safety than I care to count. The bottom line is, if you take care of them they will last a really long time. Every machine breaks down and needs maintenance. There are really good years for all makes and there are some really BAD years for all makes. The Gen2 Ram was a great model for Dodge. The Dentside and early 80's were great years for Ford. Chevy had a good run through the 80's as well. I'm not a huge fan of ANY of the 2000's models from ANY maker until you get up to the 2010+ then they are all pretty good. Everyone has their preference for sure, but this is the banter us truck guys go through. I can take it from you if you can from me in return. Fair enough? 😆

@@troysgarage how long did it take ya? I watched lastnight and it was funny you couldnt see the part number on your blown out hose, but as you put the gates one in i saw 22038, so i called oreilys n got mine :D
Nice catch bro! 😜 Yeah this job took me about 2 hours the first night tearing it down and about 3 hours the next morning putting it all back together. Luckily no leaks so only had to do it once! 😅
