  • In this video I show the basics of getting the old harmonic balancer off and replacing with a new part. I've never done this before and there might be an easier way, but I show the process I went through to get this truck back on the road. If I ever have to do this task again I'm sure I could cut the time in half now that I have experience with it once.
    This truck has almost 300,000 miles on it. So I'm sure something else will break before I'm replacing the harmonic balancer again. Subscribe so you don't miss any of the repair videos. Also I'm going to be doing a 300,000 mile makeover on this truck, in fact some off those videos have already dropped. Follow along.....

    Really appreciate the time and patience you put into making this, I know the last thing I want to do while working on my truck is to get out a camera and film and explain the situation. So thank you kindly sir

      I appreciate that more than you know! It usually takes about 3 hours of actual footage to make a 20 minute video. 😱 Most people don’t know that and think being a RUclipsr would be easy.

    I've got a 98 2x4 with a vibration at about 1600 to 1900 RPM. We've done the usual Compression Check, ( all within 9 pounds ) and a fresh tune up ( Rotor, Cap, Wires, and Plugs ). Vibration is still there. You have done a really nice with this video and made it look super easy, SOOOO, I'm going to do the Harmonic Balancer. It looks good and makes no noise but other than an out of balance Torque Converter, I'm out of guesses. Thanks so much.

      Check the top dead center. You’ll find you have to visit the pump less if it’s burnt correctly. You can get a tool connect and set your fuel sync. Or use the front cover 10 degree increment mark. Ensure your rotor inside your distributed is slightly on 1 and the rotor looks set in place horizontally, tune using the 10 degree marks to advance or decrease your firing order.

    Question. Did you have to remove the radiator? I have this same fix coming up as soon as the weather warms up. I thought I threw a rod when i first heard the noise and felt the vibration.

      It will be MUCH easier if take the Rad out. Seems like more work but will save you time in the end. Unless you just plan on using hand tools like breaker bars and ratchets with sockets. Then you might be able to get away with leaving it in place.

      I think I understand your question…. If memory serves correctly this is “keyed”, meaning it only goes on one way. If yours isn’t “keyed” then you’re going to have to set Too Dead Center on Cylinder 1 then line up TDC with the timing indicator.

    How did you get the shroud of without removing the fan ?

      I did remove the fan. Must not have shown that part. That’s one of the first steps for sure.

    How did you get the pully separated from the balancer? I have a 1998 Dodge 5.2 (supposedly the same as the 5.9 with these parts) and I removed the 6 screws from inside the pulley then I removed the crank bolt and that pully will not come off the balancer. I have seen videos where guys just tap it with a hammer and it falls right off, then they put a puller on the balancer. I know this part has been discontinued and you get a one piece unit for replacement but, mine is the original OEM version. Thanks for showing this. It was helpful to watch.

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  Год назад +2

      Yup, hammer to remove. If you have a large 3 law puller to add some tension that would also help. You'll def need the puller to get the balancer off though. Air or impact gun will make it much easier too.

      @@troysgarage Excellent Sir, thank you. I thought I was going nuts, ha ha. Yes I have a large 3 jaw puller and I also have a harmonic balancer puller and a 300 ft. pound cordless impact wrench as well. I started out doing a thermostat replacement which is difficult as this is a 1998 Dodge B1500 van. (There is no room under this hood) Then since the bearings were bad on the tensioner and the idler pulleys, I replaced them. Since I had to remove the alternator and ac compressor (moved them to the side, not total removal) and that mounting bracket, the water pump was right there so I am replacing that and the by-pass hose as it is easy now. And since when the water pump is off the timing cover is right there and the previous owner did not do the chain/gears/seal at 80k miles as the book says to do, I am replacing them now too. I have been scratching my head over this crank pulley for almost a full day so once again, thank you.

      It was super freaky when it came apart at 50 mph though! If that’s catching it in time, then you are right. 😱

      You can find all the torque numbers etc online. I just make sure everything is good and tight. Some things matter for torque settings and others you just don’t want coming loose. I use my farm hand and years of driveway mechanic experience and put some elbow grease into it. I own a torque wrench but I rarely use it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

      @@troysgarage i do alot of driveway things but my honda i did the timing and water pump on it was like 190 ft pounds. something like that i just worry alot when it comes to parts like that, i guess im real paranoid

    The cooling fan doesn’t have that gap between the blades to ease the removal, it’s actually to produce more air and reduce vibrations in the fan pulley assembly.

      @troysgarage  3 года назад +1

      Well I’ll be...... sounds like a happy accident then. Cuz it doubles for the easy access/removal. 😜🤷🏼‍♂️
