    That's awesome! Several years ago I bought an inner tube and didn't realize it had a presta valve. I didn't even know how to pump it with air! I hated it. I just bought a used carbon gravel bike and it had a presta valve. I had to buy presta-to-schrader adapter and pumped up the tires. I really didn't have to buy that adapter because I didn't know two of my pumps had this feature where you reverse the rubber and fitting like you demonstrated in the video. THIS IS A LIFESAVER!!! THANK YOU!

      Same thing with me. Was going to buy a new pump because my new bike has presta valves. All of my old bikes had schrader valves. I pulled out my super old park tools pump and discovered it could be converted like in the video. Good stuff.

      I've had an irrational avoidance to presta but just got some holy rollers and the 2.5 tubes only came with presta. I have a little drawer full of adapters and connextors but none of them worked. Turns out I also have two pumps with this feature, a min i and a large so am so thankful to find this video, learn something, get over my phobia (actually a pretty good system once you use it), and save some bucks spending in stuff I really don't need. A guage would be nice, now I can afford one. Happy days, thanks again 😉👍

    Spent more time than I’m willing to admit trying to figure out why my pump wasn’t working. I thought the tyres had green goo in them or that something was dead wrong with my bike, but it turned out I had to unscrew the miserable brass washers first to get the pump to work. Brilliant video, I can’t thank you enough.

    As a professional cyclist for 20 years, I can provide a couple of suggestions. In addition to this video. 1. Rotate the wheel so the valve is directly centre on the ground. Inflate the tube closet to the ground as opposite to what is shown in the video. It stresses the cord less and as gravity is working in your favour it doesn’t encourage air to escape as quick. 2. Inflate slightly over your desired PSI limit, when you disconnect the valve it releases some air and a few psi over compensates for this.

    • @cyclemaintenanceacademy
      @cyclemaintenanceacademy  Год назад +9

      Hey Peter, thanks a lot for taking the time to comment and sharing your pro cyclist wisdom with us and the other viewers. Your ideas about rotating the wheel so the valve is in the centre and inflating the tube that's closest to the ground totally make sense. And that tip about slightly overinflating the tyre to compensate for the air release when disconnecting the valve is clever too.
      To be honest, though, in the context of our video, the overall difference these suggestions make might be negligible. But hey, I love hearing different perspectives, and I'm sure that these suggestions will be useful to some of our pro cyclist viewers. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, and I hope you keep enjoying our content!🙂

    Your well-edited visuals, paired with the concise and calm narrative, kept THIS nervous novice to bicycle maintenance from pitching, a fit…AND its brand-new mini-pump (which had been promoted as having a head whose internals needed NO reversal to accept either type). I had broken three small, fragile teeth at the very center, which must have been the “universal” feature. EVERYTHING you illustrated matched with what I discovered about my pump when I followed your directions. Your observations and tips regarding the Presta valve, and the attachment/detachment of the pump were very much relevant and appreciated. I will definitely be exploring more of your content. I have ridden for decades, but never had the confidence to work on my bikes myself. This video is incredibly descriptive and slow enough that I didn't need to rewind or pause at anytime. Not that inflating the tire is difficult but there are a few steps like turning the internal adapter around. I ended up reading some article written by a third grade level thinker about how there's different valves but they didn't demonstrate how to actually inflate the presta valve. They actually made some really burnt out half a brain cell comment about how if you don't put the cap back on the Schrader valve that somehow your air is going to leak out after 300 yards. That's when I closed that browser and found your video which was a billion times better than that junk article

    • @cyclemaintenanceacademy
      @cyclemaintenanceacademy  2 года назад +2

      It depends. Presta valve is narrower so the rim hole is smaller. That makes the rim stronger. Presta valve is lighter than Schrader. Finally, presta valve can hold more pressure. However, the differences are so marginal and bike tyre manufacturers will soon introduce road tyres that don't require high pressure so these advantages are not noticable for everyday cyclist.

    Excellent work ! Without your video I would have continued to think that both of my air pumps were defective, and/or that the back innertube on my bike was bad. Then today, i couldn't take the slowly-flattening back tire any more, decided to switch in a new innertube, and lo and behold, neither of my 2 new innertubes would inflate either !!!!! That's when I found your video (you made today's ride the best ride I've had since buying this Sirrus a few months ago). Not only did I learn how to correctly assemble my hand-pump, but now I can use my electric pump properly too, and pass on to others what I've learned from you. Thank you !

      @@cyclemaintenanceacademywhy is it all our cars and trucks still uses Schrader valves instead of Presta valves

    • @cyclemaintenanceacademy
      @cyclemaintenanceacademy  Год назад +4

      Hey Mark, good question. The main advantage of Presta valves is that they hold more pressure better. That's why you mainly see them on road bike wheels where higher pressure (over 100PSI) is required. Car tyres don't require high pressure (they are usually around 30-35PSI) and Schrader valves are easier to use. That's why they became a standard for motorised vehicles. Tyre companies work now on new types of road tyres where higher pressure is not required to achieve lower resistance so at some point Presta valves might loose their main advantage

    • @marklouieadame
      @marklouieadame Год назад +2

    • @cyclemaintenanceacademy
      @cyclemaintenanceacademy  2 года назад +1

      Hi John, yes, good question.😂
      It's the lock nut that is causing all this problem.
      First, it needs to be undone and screwed back on each time used. Second, it often bends and snaps when pumping.
      On the positive side, Presta valve is slightly easier to pump compare to Schrader (especially when using a hand pump) because it has no valve spring to overcome.

Regarding the replaceable valve cores, while some inner tubes allow for valve core replacement, this video is primarily geared toward those who are new to Presta valves. I aimed to keep it straightforward and avoid overwhelming beginners with too much information, especially since the majority of the innertubes come with the core that's integrated with the valve and only a small amount of more expensive inner tubes offer that option.
