Presta have always seemed fragile to me. You can bend the exposed valve core just by putting the pump on if you're not very careful. What I'm really trying to learn here is can you get tubeless rims with schrader valves?
I personally haven't seen any companies selling a tubeless ready wheel with Schrader valves. I don't think it would be too difficult to set up if you wanted to do it. You would have to widen the valve hole out for a Schrader valve and then probably use a valve stem designed for a car and in theory that would work. It's on my list to try one day.
@@myfrequencies1912 I've got 2 flat tyres from attempting to pump up the dreaded Presta. I want to convert to Schrader but I think my wheels are Presta only.
@@aodh5966 You can drill them out yourself if aluminium or use a grinding bit if carbon (seek advice on that from a mechanic though). If you're tubeless, then you can find bolt-through schrader valve stems specifically designed for bicycle wheels.
in presta defaults, I feel like the top is easy to bend with a short pump (did it by accident on a bike which wasn't mine) and take longer to plug / unplug from your pump as you have to turn the nut each time. Also, for road bike which often have high pressure, it's easier to loosen the pressure if it rains and you want better adherence on wet floor.
The other day I got a pump to pump up my bike, it was presto valve, I pumped to max but 2 days later back tire is completely flat. Now I cant even pump air into it, as the metal thing doesn't seem to be holding the hair in. Did I break it or was it already broken? Never dealt with presta valves
I had a set of Mavic 700cc rims that were setup for Presta Valves on the Nishiki Alien, when I bought it from a pawn shop. I couldn't find any 700cc Presta inner tubes to replace it when I got my first flat tires, so I had to use a drill bit and bore the valve stem holes on the rims to fit shraeder valves. 🙄
Good Video . I thought presta valves were designed for more trips to the bike shop .Low in air you can't get air at the wawa or gas station .Low tire = new tire and tube or walk or carry your bike .Great design .
So if you use the full metal sleeve Schraders with the lock nut then there is little advantage to presta, except for those bikes with thinner wheels of course.
I always forget to mention those, even though I run them on my Dirt jumper and my wife's bike haha! Nice option if you have problems with valve stem damage often. Holds the valve stem in place too if you get the threaded ones similar to a presta valve.
"nobody's gonna carry that [pump]" ....except the other kool cyclists 😉👍 I've also had those times I've showed people how to switch their dual pumps from Schrader to Presta.
Haha! I used to be the guy with the mini pump set for schrader valve when I first started racing. I've had guys with presta valves hand my pump back figuring it wouldn't work for their set up. Just gotta flip the rubber seals around!
The first time I saw a presta valve, my initial reaction was "this is stupid". But now, I still think they are 😅. I mean personally I can't figure out a good reason that it exist, other than they needed it to fit on slim rims.
You can put Presta in a Schrader rim: all you need is an extra lock nut. You install one all the way at the bottom of the valve, install the tube and then put the other one on like normal. The locknut inside stops the valve from hemorrhaging out the larger hole in the rim.
