Rita didn't have to be the green ranger to have the coin. Any of her minions, likely Goldar, could have simply beat Zordon or one of his allies to the coin, or ambushed them and took it. Her being the green ranger isn't the most logical answer when you think about original lore.

Damn, I can't believe it's been already five years since this movie came out. I definitely liked the movie. I liked the more grounded tone, the more flawed version of the Rangers, Zordon and Rita being the original Red and Green Rangers, and even the look of the suits. It's a damn shame we never got a sequel, and I wished we got that instead of the 90s time travel movie idea that Hasbro is doing.

  • @Setoyami
    @Setoyami 2 года назад +24

Going over the issues that the movie has…
The first issue that comes to mind is that thy tried to fit so much backstory in, with so little time. Yes, we need to know who the characters are. But the amount of backstories we got, each character should have gotten their own 30min episode. What we got was six backstories in 2hours.
The next issue was the redesign/reset. In the 90s Power Ranger movies, we still got the costume designs we recognized, music, the monsters, the characters and the Zords. Now yes, I know they hit the reset button for the 2017 movie and wanted a “new take”. But they made the same mistake that the anime industry made in the 80s to the mid-ish 90s… They tried to American EVERYTHING, and that wasn’t what fans want.
The people that went to see the movie was old school fans, and the current younger fans of the show. Trying to change everything to meet the Twitter and Hollywood check list is what killed the movie.
The pacing for the 2017 movie was also awful. It took ¾ of the runtime to get to the action and for the rangers to actually morph. The zord fight was also rushed and seemed to have a low budget for what we got.
The 1995 movie gave us a fighting scene in normal street clothes, a morphed fighting scene. Story break, fallowed up by another fighting scene. A mid boss fight scene in new clothes. Then a Zord fight scene where all the zords were shown with their own set of abilities. Then a Mega Zord fight.
I’m hoping the Hasbro take doesn’t kill Power Rangers, but build on it like the BOOM comics have. Not going to hold my breath, but I’m going to stay hopeful.

Personally as someone who enjoyed the movie , to me It felt , real , it felt like it had a lot of potential and storylines and mysteries and LEGACY , especially with the beginning battlefield scene , this was an okay introduction movie cuz it was supposed to be a multi-movie franchise , the problems they had were enough to be fixed in the upcoming movies , it was a nice blend of new school and a glimpse of old school , but upping the “hero” factor because to be honest the original series are A bit cheesy when you watch it from an adult point of view so what they did in 2017 felt like a huge contrast of tone , wish they would’ve given it a second chance , like a second movie , but people were too harsh on it in my opinion

Honestly, I completely disagree with you. I was the perfect age when the original show debuted and I loved the show. I went into this looking for something new. I had the original series, and have rewatched some of it over time, however, when I saw this movie I wanted something new, something that made it more modern and took it out of the cringe that I felt at rewatching the original series, and for me, this delivered in spades. I guess I'm in the minority in that I kinda liked the costume design and felt for all of the characters. I connected with all of them, unlike with the show where I only was able to connect with maybe 1 of the 5 or 6 rangers (depending on the timing in the show) and none of them really reflected me as a person. And I honestly don't care that it took most of the movie before they fully suited up because I personally felt the earned it instead of were gifted it.

I just...it's always bad when a film feels like every part of it is somehow ashamed of where it came from. The costumes and zords didn't want to look too much like the dinosaurs they were based on so they had to turn them into weird, cyborg xenomroph versions of the suits and the megazord and the like, the coins were turned into these glittering infinity gems without any of the personality that made all the weapons, vehicles and accessories fun. What was a kid supposed to get out of this movie when all the rangers look the same in different color and the mech looks like a melted army man covered in crayon?

It just wasn’t good. I liked the character development but there was no action until the last 20 minutes! The film made the same mistake as the Turbo movie. They could’ve had them morph, fight putties, and learn to be a team throughout the movie. The Zord CGI looked bad and the suit design looked even worse. They all looked the same except for the differing colors. Fan designs on Instagram came up with better suit designs that stay closer to the show & Sentai design. This is another case of a big franchise film being made by people who don’t understand what makes it work.

To be honest, if I were to want a Power Rangers reboot that wasn't cannon to the main series, I'd have it be an anime, not only to honour the series' Japanese roots, but to also allow for further risks to be taken with the series that they weren't allowed to take before thanks to the Sentai footage, and Saban's babyproofing after school special nonsense that substantially handicapped the earlier seasons of the show. A PR anime would definitely be a cool thing to see when put in the right hands. In tone, it should aim to tell a dramatic story in the same vein as In Space and Time Force, but with a more mature feel that'll allow teens and young adults to get into the series as well.

I honestly didn’t mind how the rangers looked in the reboot, obviously they went for a more alien look for the suits with how they are crystallizing around their bodies. Now would the movie be better if they brought over some Ranger iconography from the 90s show into the reboot? Yes, I would love to see that, but that is not what we really got here with the Ranger suits.
I feel like the story in this is a good Power Rangers story and I would love for some ideas that this film set up to be explored in other Power Ranger mediums. Like, a story of a Power Ranger being closeted and struggling to come out is interesting as well as for an Autistic Power Ranger. As an autistic person myself, I loved how they portrayed Billy in this with him being autistic. He’s a really good portrayed of someone with Autism and I really related to his character. I loved the fact that he was the first to morph and was the heart of the movie and the one that got the team to set aside their flaws to band together.

I think the problem with the movie was that it got too crowded, wasn't good at conveying its ideas, but on top of that, it felt like it was too embarrassed to embrace the campiness from it's source material. Because of this, we get a film that's not only confused, but also bland, forgettable, and, at times, pretty boring. Does that make it one of the worst movies ever made? No. Honestly, I wouldn't even call it one of the worst superhero movies ever made. It has some cool action and good acting, but you always know where its loyalty lies: to franchise it. You can franchise a series fine, but you have to be committed to a good story and ideas first. And those simply aren't in this one. It's too bad. I really like the 2017 Power Ranger cast and would like to have seen where this series would have gone if they had gotten more competent writers behind it, as well as a studio that focused more on getting one film right instead of the next five. So... (sighs) despite it giving some good scenes, Power Rangers (2017) just wasn't very morphinominal. Let's hope Hasbro can do a better job.

I find it kinda amusing that while they differed from the originals in origin, they had elements of Dino Thunder’s teens. It’s a break from Jason and crew, but a note that definitely works for Power Rangers. The two biggest writing misses, I felt, was a) not having anyone explain why the zords are a thing they use. Had a friend who wasn’t familiar, and was like “what is the point of the giant mechs?” B) kimberly’s story..doesn’t necessarily feel resolved? Hard to put into words, but something about it kinda feels dropped after Jason and her talk, and then has added weirdness when she laughs at them being scared in the end.
Honestly though…i kinda liked the suit designs? They were alien, and heavily based on their predecessors, and I think a cool detail would’ve been in the next film, if they kinda morphed to be closer to what we know due to the rangers’ thoughts or differences from Zordon’s team (i personally kinda found it a bit odd, reading Power Rangers Universe #2, when the masters helped pull energy from phantom ranger and it put them in more modern design suits). These are aliens that might not know as much about our dinosaurs, and i liked that they felt..alien due to that but with room to change.

From someone who is at the extreme opposite of your position on the suits and Zords. I find your take refreshing and your solution quite acceptable and reasonable and it also makes for a cool progression. That these suits might have been the original thing Zordon used for himself and or aliens before but that it would change to something much closer to the TV series and first movie in the 2nd. Cause personally I really really hate the suits and Zords.

I feel like a lot of reboots failed because people expect it to either be the exact same as the original only with better effects and such, or so similar you can’t tell the difference between the two and in either instance that’s just not what a reboot is. When you reboot a series, the only set rule is that you stick to the basic plot and a few key details. Do that and you’ve accomplished what you set out to do in the reboot. Take the new He-Man cartoon on Netflix for example. They stuck to the basic premise of “prince with magic powers fights evil skull-head nut job” and stuck to the key elements like Castle Greyskull and “I have the power!” They’ve kept to those points no matter what else they changed and it’s done well enough to get extra seasons.
If people didn’t get so hung up on the fact that’s it’s different from the original, then they would be able to see that this new thing, SEPARATE from the original, can actually pretty good (there are some that fail possibly due to not following this or maybe because they did what the fans want and just did the exact same thing with updated effects and people decided they actually didn’t want that)! That’s just what I think though!

I get so hurt when I see how many people did not like the costume designs. I always felt that was the one thing they really nailed. Giving it more of an alien esthetic made sense to me. The design of the Zords and the Megazord are what bothered me.

@flowrebaz6189 It made sense because space and aliens had a lot to do with the show! Tf! I mean, they were literally traveling to other planets and had a season called Power Rangers in Space. To me, the movie wasnt just taking things from the original mighty Morphin, but the first two to three iterations of the show (Mighty Morphin, Zeo, in Space). But y'all seem like the kind of people that would've hated anything they came up with because I don't think they look that much different from the suits in the original '95 movie.

In my opinion, the perfect prototype of what a modern Power Rangers film should be is Pacific Rim. Riley and Mako initially do not know each other, and are not perfect, but grow and work together. They even suit up to pilot the Jaeger/Megazord. It is obviously more grounded than the original MMPR, but doesn't take itself too seriously either. Power Rangers needs someone who will respect and enjoys the original concept.

I like this movie, it showed a group of rangers that were very, human, for a lack of better words.
Not that I have anything against the original group mind you. If it weren't for them I would have watched this movie to begin with.
Unlike so many, I came into this movie with a set of fresh eyes. I had no expectation that it would be like that original series and found it to be exactly what it needed to be for the most part.
Too many people had certain expectations going in, and that harmed everyone involved. They simply didn't want to except that this was it's own entity, and still should be.

It breaks my heart that the PR Cinematic Universe they had planned won't happen. I know the next installment would have included Zedd and the Green Rangers which would have done exactly what it did for the original series. The sequel would have surpassed the first film by a landslide and the further sequels would have been greenlit immediately. But apparently the bulk of the PR fandom needs more flashy colors, robots, and explosions and less real human storylines to be entertained.... ::sigh::

    What They Got Right:
    1) RITA: She is the best part of the film. She is a scary monster who will rip your jaw off to get a gold tooth and then turn around and be sexy and charismatic the next. A Rita that kills, even other power rangers, was great. Her being the original green ranger was great and answered how she originally had the dragon coin. AND it explained how she knew what color ranger each kid was... because she was still connected to the morphin grid while in possession of the coin. And given the film spends so much time with the kids trying to be worthy to be Rangers... at the end when Rita shouts at Jason “Zordon judge me? Never! I AM WORTHY!” ... that line was sooo good and said so much with very little words.
I can’t say enough about Rita in this.
    2) The Team: The kids all have personalities and flaws and for better or worse are ‘teenagers with attitude’ and had chemistry when interacting together, and even individual friendships within the team (Jason & Billy) (Kim & Jason, that they wussed out on them kissing 😆) (Zack & Trini picking on each other).
    3) The Zeo Crystal: This legit gives the monsters a reason to keep singling Angel Grove out. This plot device explains away soooo many plot holes.
    4) Zordon: They could never capture what original Zordon was so having him be grumpy and not confident in the new team, his past history with Rita helps keep me invested.
    What Needs Fixed:
    1) All things Morphed:
The suits, the coin and the Megazord would of benefitted being more true to the show. And I was so sad that they had the chance to do a power sword epic kill shot and they didn’t ham it up. A rare chance missed when no explosion would of been too big.
    2) Goldar: The movie wouldn’t need to change at all. Rita could still could of collected gold to make her wand and the armor of Goldar, but his look should of stayed true to the show.
    3) Cut the Billy Death Scene Out: As emotional as the scene was meant to be- no one believed Billy was going to die. So instead I think that since so much time was spent on the team learning to morph they could of used the extra time from the death scene to spend time more time with the morphed Rangers as they fought off the putties before just jumping into the zords

The film wasn’t that bad, but if we were going back in time, the product placement should be removed from the film because it’s a distraction to the story. Production Placement is now removed and the reviews might a little bit positive then mixed reviews to say at least and the box office records might make an moderate box office success. I don’t know that is my opinion. And the tone, just aim for a Neo-Noir tone because I can tell that the film had ambition. I really LOVE THE MOVIE and feel it is better than the 1995’s and 1997’s movies. I actually enjoy now and when it was upon release in 2017.

I saw this in theaters opening weekend because I was so excited for it. I LOVED it. I've been a fan since the first series debuted, back when I was in middle school, and to me, the film captured the essence of the show and put it in a modern context. I loved the interpersonal dynamics of the characters, and how Rita was a much more interactive villain this time around. Billy was the standout among this new group of rangers, at least for me. He was the real heart of the team. But I loved Kim and Trini's bonding scenes, and the quiet moments. I also loved how Goldar was handled, being Rita's zord. Agreed on the Ranger costumes themselves - though I do think they look better in motion than they do in stills.
What really let the film down, IMO, was the toys. The original series' toys were amazing! My brother got a bunch that first year for Christmas, because my mom did her shopping so early, and actually bought them before the show blew up, thinking if he didn't end up liking it, she'd take them back and exchange them. And then my brother adored the show, and the toys were nowhere to be seen, and we had a suitcase in the back of my parents' closet full of them. Talk about a happy kid at Christmas! But the toys for the 2017 movie were so far from the caliber of those original toys, or even the toys for the current series (was that Beast Morphers at the time?), that they were laughable. They looked like they were melting, they weren't articulated. What kid would look at those toys and decide they had to see this movie?
I am sad we'll never get the sequel, since it was set up so perfectly in the mid-credits sequence. So is my brother, who didn't end up seeing this in theaters, but he watched it on DVD with me when he came to visit that summer. He really liked it as well.

I think they changed the ethnicities of Trini is because they didn’t want to make yellow ranger an Asian women which was a huge casting mistake back in the 90s that they probably wanted to avoid in the reboot, especially with Zack by making him an Asian man. Also, why did you call Billy African when he is obviously American, also, you can refer to him as black.

Just wished that they would’ve spent more than the last few minutes in the suits (but I guess that’s how it went in the show too). They were referring to it as armor, while true that's how it may be seen by some people, the costumes serve IMO two big in universe purposes. 1: they provide the heroes with an alter ego as to protect their friends and family from their enemies as any good costume should. 2: they help contain their power and help them harness it within them as to not escape. I seem to remember hearing the sparks produced when hit is the Grid energy being released from the suit. Those suits in the movie were treated as literal armor so they all ended looking like a rainbow of football players

Zords did the same exact thing. As a true fan the people who made this film did everything right. It blows my mind that this didn’t get a sequel. Every actor in this film was incredible. I personally love it, from the first minutes i decided to not compare this movie with Classic PRs and it's worked.

I really liked how they had Trini be gay/bi. I think what Power Rangers has needed for a while now is LGBTQ+ representation, so seeing that made me happy. The newest season even had a gay character so we’re making progress. I just want a gay male pink ranger so bad lol
