I followed the video and was able to replace the starter on my farm truck, much to my surprise. Not bad for 61 yr old granny at 5’2” and 110 lbs. The worst part was installing it in the dark in my woods where it broke down, the old rust falling in my face and trying to hold and wire the 20 lb part lying on my back. Thanks for showing me the way beyond changing my own oil.
Nice and easy lol I just messed around for 2 hours trying to release the 8 MMS and the 13mm first. 1.5 hours of that was trying to figure out that it is actually an 8mm lol
I like the way you did this. One guy pulled the tire and fender well out to get access to wires on starter. If I have to I will. Just less I will have to put back together.
On my truck there is no heatshield and one of the mounting bolts has a huge ground strap on it attached to the frame. Thank you for this video i could not remember if that wire from the main body went on the lug or not and you really helped me out there.
Replaced my 1996 Chevy suburban c1500 at nighttime following this video. Thank god cuz i was stranded in front of my ex wife house after dropping kids off until i fixed it 😂😂😂😂😂
This helps immensely thank you! Also, dude, you remind me of Cory from Trailer Park Boys. Take no offense - Cory is awesome, you just kinda look like him.
Where do those 2 long bolts going thru the starter bolt into? Right into the engine block? Or into the transmission? The side starter bold had broken off when the mechanic was taking the starter out. He said they didn't have the tool(s) to reach it or get it out. It broke off with a small amount protruding.
FYI if you have to do this in the yard etc you can jack up the truck from the passenger side tire jack point and it really helps, just make sure you put something good and sturdy under the jack so it doesn't sink.
Okay, let me just start by saying that I'm glad you're doing this video as it will prove to be somewhat helpful to some people. That said you are missing a TON of important details! First and most importantly the YEAR of your truck! This tells everyone if it's OBS or NBS and narrows down just how accurate or inaccurate the information your giving will be compared to their car. I'll be honest I thought since you're talking about a Chevy K1500 the information and tools would be at least close to what I would need for my 1993 GMC K1500 5.7L V8 with automatic transmission and 4 wheel drive (all the details Auto Zone needed to get the right starter). Your socket sizes were NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!
I do have the year of the truck in the description. Also, bolt sizes vary as these trucks are old and sometimes people replace bolts and things so you can never be sure if yours are going to be the same. Good luck on your install. 🤙🏼
So I've noticed you didn't use Shims I have practically the same truck but mine is a 94 with the 5.7 so I'm curious is it different with all the obs trucks do some need shims or no
8:08 Replaced battery and starter as you taught us. Starter just clicked as at old starter did. I checked all cable connections. Then I tried to crank the engine again, but to no avail. What should I check next?
Hi, we have the same truck. I just wanna ask if u ever experience this problem on ur truck, mine is the heater at the back or rear is not blowing hot air but the front vents work. Thanks
I have a 1996 gmc suburban that wont start. It sounds like grinding noises from the motor. It used to be able to start. Now it doesn't for sure. I was told, it could be either the starter, or fuel pump. As the fuel gage stopped displayi ng the correct amount of fuel. Or maybe both?
I have a 1992 K1500 with a manual transmission. The slave cylinder is below the starter motor and gets in the way of dropping out the starter. Do you have any suggestions?
I did my 94 K1500 20 yrs ago with manual transmission. the hydrraulic line runs under the starter also. think there were two nuts/bolts that held the slave on. it will come off and then just move it into a position not under the starter.
@@MikeFromCanadaEh Thank you for getting back to me. I did just what you suggested. I removed the slave cylinder with the hydraulic line still attached. There was enough flex to the hydraulic line that I could push the slave cylinder assembly to the side. Then I used some string to tie it against the truck frame where it was out of the way and afforded me plenty of access to work on the starter.
@@ChelszH That's awesome brother. Glad it's still going. I left mine off as well as I couldn't get it back on and was in a hurry to get it going. Thanks for the reply back 👍
I recently installed a new starter. The problem is the starter is free spinning. I've changed the battery terminals and installed a new battery. When I hooked up the new terminals to the battery. The starter is not engaging. What could be the problem.
You need a new starter. The gear you see on the starter is NOT engaged to the engine flywheel until the starter starts to spin. Thus sliding into the flywheel gear. Yours is not sliding forward into the flywheel gear.
What about the brace that is supposed to prevent broken starter bolts? I'm dealing with that right now...on a truck I bought from someone else. Starter was changed and brace omitted.
The other day I went out to my truck and I hit the key to start it and it went *click*. When we got back we threw it on the battery charger because the voltage gauge was down and then I tried starting it again. Then it again went *click* so then we determined it was likely the starter

Ma'am, you're a legend.
One Bad Ass Granny!!!
You're a lucky man to have a lady that cheers on your success at stuff like this.
Most would just take it for granted.
This was a great tutorial! I’m 17 with no prior experience and installed a new starter on my 93 gmc k1500

Awesome! So glad we could help.

Definitely helped me out to not ruin wiring. Thanks for the video.

You got god strength to hold that starter up like that
He was determined...
Thank you for posting this. Helped me alot. Much appreciated
Very nice professional and easy to understand keep up the good work.
Thank you very much!

Enjoyed the video, especially the way your girl supports you , y’all seem happy together, I’m about to do the same thing with mine

Great how to video! It was very helpful.
Nice work do you know the part number to starter bolts or size?
Wow that actually seemed pretty smooth

can you share the link of where you bought the peice
Orale ese asi cambio el starter yo mismo pero con cuidado thanks for the video👍
If anyone does this at home replace your heat shield too saves some headaches in the future
Does it swap over old to new?
Agree to this! Starter solenoid is prone to heat soak, it will leave you for an hour in a parking spot.
Nice... Looks pretty simple.. might try this one💪🏾
Damn where do yo live it looks amazing
Is it still going without the heat shield?
Still going strong!

Excellent
Your video was helpful thank you!
The smaller wire is that connected to the "S" or "R" terminal?
I put the small starter on my truck without paying attention it starts quicker and weighs less sooo may as well

I did the same thing but is got a noise on the start. Any feed back?
keep the heatshield. Use the old bolts on the new starter...
Whats the 8mm wire run too? Just did my starter and the 8mm broke on the old starter and pulled the clip off my block. What are those for?
it connects the battery to the starter electrically.
What about the brace that is supposed to prevent broken starter bolts? I'm dealing with that right now...on a truck I bought from someone else. Starter was changed and brace omitted.
You have a diesel? Maybe gas engines have the brace too. Im trying to figure out how to get a socket on the brace bolt right now on a 6.2 diesel.
What was the issue that you were having?
It Seems My Truck has More Crap In the Way!!...2001 GMC 1500, I think it is the exhaust, but something else is in the way??
The other day I went out to my truck and I hit the key to start it and it went *click*. When we got back we threw it on the battery charger because the voltage gauge was down and then I tried starting it again. Then it again went *click* so then we determined it was likely the starter
Same thing is happening to me. Was it the starter?
It happened to me too
What was the issue big boy. Was it the starter
where dose that purple wire go to its just dangling on my truck
If you wanted to protect it from heat just put some heat wrap around it
You could have put the starter on then got to the top over the passenger tire, so you don't have to hold it the entire time
i replced it now all i hear is buzzing when i turn the key
Installed the same starter and mine won't start just grinds
What about the shims
The long bolts on my 98took a 15mm socket
Florida
Idk where I got two of the big wires
Tell me why i flinched when it almost fell off 😂
The shop I work at charges you for 3 hours labor on this job. That's $390 plus the part... ask me how I know.
The starter should be sitting flush correct.
Rob Schneider or what lol
Good video
Thanks so much for the video!
