    Ah yes, the video I need to see before I play this on tabletopia, before I decide to back this on Kickstarter haha. Thanks for the video Jon!

    Thanks, Jon. Tremendous work again. Love it.
    I noticed how the side of the cards have half of a lamp post on them. Beautiful how it comes together.

    I love heavy games, but by 6:51 I knew this was not for me. Probably the fastest I've noped out of a JGG video.

    • @sairam71
      @sairam71 3 года назад

      yea i felt the same thing. the game has way too much tokens balancing on tiny spaces. and 6:51 is another added level of dexterity, that i bet many players will be like, crap i moved my token, where was it before i spun my card! Its GG with a slight table bump.

      honestly i will not disagree with the gam being a huge info dump that easily can overwhelm people, it is still more managable compared to the original Arkwright game and the game does come with a solid player aid that lists all the things your able to do on your turn.

    I enjoyed this one more than the last two tutorials because of the skip forward to the middle of the game. Nevada City especially could have used a look at what the game plays like when there are a lot more buildings etc. Not every game needs a similar later round example (I don't think The Magnificent did) but some do and this was definitely one. I know you're still experimenting with the new style so there are probably some kinks to work out, but this video worked for me!
    As for the game itself though... I have mixed feelings. With the card game version, I think you want something a little more portable and simpler but which still captures the essence of the game. I think an excellent example is San Juan, which I actually think is superior to Puerto Rico due to being more elegant. But I don't think this version succeeds at being more elegant than the original. In addition, while it is simpler and shorter, it's still very complex and heavy, and if I am in the mood for that I am in the mood for the whole shebang, so I'd want to play the original instead. It feels like it fails to find a space, though a lot of that is probably my own preferences.
    But the main criticism I have is the odd way that demand and wages work. One of my favorite parts of Arkwright is the interaction with the labor market: as more people are hired wages go up, but people are also willing to buy more goods as employment increases since they have more disposable income. This game simplifies that into a couple of tracks, but in making this simplification they have lost the intuitive feeling that the main game has with this (as well as the tactile and visual feeling of looking at the labor market and seeing how many workers there are, though this is probably something components will always have an edge with over cards). Thus, even though the rules in the card game are _technically_ simpler, they don't feel much simpler because they are sacrificing the benefits of a straightforwardly apparent and easy to understand at a glance wage market: the demand tracker in particular is _very_ unintuitive in this game. Even after watching the video I was furrowing my brow at it.
    Some of the simplifications do work, I like how everything takes fewer actions whereas in Arkwright it often feels like you need 4 turns to do any one thing in the game (to ship, first you need to _get_ a ship, then you need to get a contract, then you need to produce the goods, and only then can you finally take the shipping action....) but the loss of my favorite part of the game hurts my impressions of it too much overall.
    Thanks for the video!

      I agree with what you said regarding Nevada City. That was my first video in this new style and already I feel like I would have approached that differently after filming a couple more videos this way. I just finished recording one where it strangely made sense to start halfway through the first round and then I played one full round from there which means I ended the video halfway through the second round. Another game I'm planning on doing later this month may actually start in the first round right from the get go, I'm not sure yet. I still feel somewhat awkward with this new style but I'm sure I'll grow into it over time and get better at figuring out the right way to tell each game's story in tutorial form.

      I for one think there's a definitely a place for small box heavy games and therefore I'm loving this. SImilar to Pax Ren there's something about games that pack a punch so the comparison to San Juan is not necessarily the only way it can go. The changes don't concern me since I have never played the original Arkwright.

    Both rounds in your tutorial were of players who all had bread factories. It would have been nice to see an example of a round in which a player who did not have a factory participating in said round. Otherwise, fantastic tutorial :)

    Green's first turn is a little messy, but after watching it over and over again, I figured out what happened. This is basically from 13 to 17 minutes (see time stamps below).
    13:00 you move the demand marker up (demand goes down) and it is at the top of the zero area because of the appeal marker for the blue player moving across the icon.
    15:53 the demand marker for food is shown 1 space down from where it was at the 13 min mark. This is because you moved all demand tokens down due to hiring workers, but never mentioned it, it happens off screen. Then because the green player moved their appeal marker up, you shift it up again to the top of the zero area for some reason, though this is premature (see below)
    16:50 Now the green player actually sets their appeal to 2 (previously it was 3), and you move the demand marker to the top of the zero area once again because the green player moved their appeal marker (for the second time) across the icon.
    In Summary the green player's turn is a little messy. Although I believe the marker ends up in the right place, it appears to be jumping around when you cut back and forth from the player area to the demand board area. Hopefully I was able to explain what was going on.

      I don't remember what happened this long ago, but I do sometimes make mistakes and film fixes in a way to hopefully hide the mistake. These can leave incorrect remnants that I either know about but hope are too small for people to notice, or that I unfortunately don't notice until later on. I do hope you still found the video informative for the game.

    Jon when u fast forwarded to the end of game scoring, did u actually play out the rest of the game off-screen?

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  3 года назад

      No, I simply mocked up an example end-game situation so those scores are not to be taken seriously.

    I backed this before I even looked at the kickstarter page. Love the original game, and anything that emulates that in a shorter, less AP inducing, time frame sounds good to me. Have you played the original Arkwright, Jon? If so, how do you think this compares to it?

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  3 года назад

      I haven't played the original so unfortunately I can't make any comparisons.

    • @redeyedghost1406
      @redeyedghost1406 3 года назад

      @@JonGetsGames I can't remember if you've played Food Chain Magnate or not, but that's what Arkwright reminds me of the most. But it's not quite as cutthroat, and is a bit deeper in its long term planning. If I played it more often it might be my #1 game, but it is definitely hard to get to the table.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  3 года назад

      @@redeyedghost1406 Interesting comparison. I have played FCM twice, though that was many years ago.
