The PS3's implementation of PS1 memory card emulation is actually pretty neat. Yes there is that initial setup step, but after that, it's a lot easier than dealing with physical memory cards. (Namely that you can have as many save files as you want, just by creating as many virtual memory cards as you need.)

Read on if you want to know the *TRUTH* about which models will play which games. Most people don't know what they are talking about, so there is loads of misinformation about this. *PS1 games*: *ALL* models will play PS1 games(original, slim, and super slim). However, it may or may not play 100% of them, and some games may have issues. *PS2 games*: This is where it gets a little complicated. Only generation 1 & 2 systems will play these. Both generations are the original fat models. Specifically, the 20GB & 60GB(Gen 1), and the 80GB(Gen 2). Gen 1's had hardware based backward compatibility, so around 95% of PS2 games will work on them. Gen 2's have partially software based backward compatibility, and they only play around 70% of the games. Also, certain games may have issues running on the PS3. There is also a Gen 2 60GB model(not to be confused with the Gen 1 60GB model) and an 80GB Gen 3 model. The Gen 2 60GB was only released in Europe but is also backwards compatible(70% of games). The Gen 3 80GB is *not* backwards compatible. *EDIT*: If the above is a little too confusing for you, there is a much easier way to know if a certain model can play PS2 games. Simply flip it over and look at the model number. What you want is a CECHAxx or CECHBxx. CECHCxx(PAL only) and CECHExx are the later Gen 2 models that are only 70% compatible. Go for one of those only if you can't find the former. I should have mentioned this before but for some stupid reason didn't think of it. Three more things to note: 1. Both PS1 and PS2 games are still region locked when playing them on a PS3. 2. Gen 3 systems(40, 80, and 160GB) are original fat models, but they *WILL NOT* play PS2 games. So despite what many will tell you, not all fats will play PS2 games. 3. You can play certain PS1 and PS2 games on any model by purchasing digital versions of them in the PS Store, but this is about which systems will play the actual discs.
***** Yeah, you could do that if you don't care as much about playing PS3 games. Keep in mind that the PS2 doesn't have perfect backwards compatibility either though, but it's very close to it. Certain models of the PS2 will not play certain PS1 games correctly, having various issues with them. For example, Legend of Dragoon and Grandia having freezing issues when played on a PS2, and it seems to be all models for those particular games. As for the rest of the games that have issues(but usually only with certain models), the problems vary. It can be freezing, not being able to save, graphical glitches, or simply not working at all. But again, this is only a very small amount of games. I do recommend avoiding a specific model of the PS2 Slim however. The model number is SCPH-75001. That one seems to be incompatible with many more games then other models are for whatever reason.
It also should be noted that the 70% and the 95% are mutually exclusive. Meaning that the Hardware PS2 inside a PS3 cannot play all what the partial software one can, or vice versa. They are separate lists of games. It also good to note that while the newer ones that use partial emulation are generally less compatible, they do tend to perform better for loading times. Now if only they opted to do the Bleemcast route and simply upscaled to 1080p whatever textures they could, that would have been great!

The very first console that was 60 GB played ps1-3 games. It also had Crome, witch explains why it cost so much. Anything after the 60 gb is a cheaper model with less features but so major update like less heat, noise ect.

The first batch of fat PS3s did run PS2 games, because they came with the Emotion Engine CPU of the PS2 built inside them. But remember how the 60 GB PS3 cost $599? It was horribly expensive, and yet Sony _lost_ money on each PS3 sold, because the blu-ray drive was so expensive back then (money was supposed to be made selling games). So they eventually removed the PS2 processor that ran PS2 games, making the console cheaper, and when they launched the PS3 Slim, which you have in the video, even the PS1 processor was removed, so PS1 games are run by an emulator. The weird thing is, PS2 games you buy on PSN also run on a PS2 emulator, but if you have the game on a disc it won't run. Sony's excuse for this is probably that the PSN versions are optimized to run on the emulator, or maybe that they're recompiled for the PS3, but not being able to play your old games sucks either way.

Hate to disappoint you, but that GTA san andreas copy you have is from the trilogy collection. It came in 2006. The disc even says that it’s the trilogy disc. So it’s not an original release.

I been playing ps1 games on PS3 for at least 6 years. And no to all the people in these comments who already knew about this this isn't a stupid video because there is a rumor going around since PS3 can't play ps2 games there's a rumor it can't play ps1 games. And main reason there's a difference between ps2 and ps1 games compatibility is because and yes I do know PS3 can play DVD movies but ps2 was a DVD rom which I believe has a different format DVD rom than a movie and ps1 was a cd rom not a DVD rom therefore a different format making cd rom ps1 games read in a PS3 and there actually was 2 models of PS3 that could play ps2 games and those models are now very rare to find as no one sells them when people get there hands on them. There were 2 models made for an 80 gig console a model with 2 USB ports and a model with 4 USB ports the 80 gig made model with 4 USB ports will play ps2 games. Also all 60 gig models will play ps2 games all 60 gig models had 4 USB ports as long as a console has 4 USB ports PS2 games will play. Also in the PS store there is a thing that's free to get called PlayStation 2 software in everyone's PS3 store but unless you have one of those 2 models you can't use the software
The ps3 and ps1 disc used the same kind of disc format. Sony wanted to try another kind of disc format on the ps2 that dose not work with any other play station but that kind of disc kept getting scratches unlike the ps1. Or sony forgot about ps1 and forgot to block the ps1 from working on the ps3.
I have the original 60gb version which has 4 front USB ports, a multi card reader, and has the emotion chip. This emotion chip allows it to play all PS2 games, while all PS3's can also play PS1 games. When PS5 comes out it will probably have emulation for PS3 games but not PS4. So original PS3 plays PS3, PS2,PS1 games.... all other versions of the PS3 console only play PS3, PS1 games.
*Commending Sony's ambition for the PS3, it's just a Shame that they couldn't make it work with the whole full backwards compatibility thing , if they did then it would have been the perfect console.*
The PS3 Slim does not have the hardware on board to actually play PS2 games. However for some reason, it can play games you bought from PSN Sotre with literally NO issues whatsoever, no slow downs or graphical glitches. Now, my question is: why? The answer is quite simple, It is much easier to use Nostalgia to make money than to just let people who actually own disc copies of past generation games to play these games. This is exactly why the PS4 has NO physical backwards compatibility at all so they can make money from PS1, PS2 and PS3 remasters and ports. However I will say that Microsoft has the right idea, allowing 360 games to be played on the Xbox One they also did this with original Xbox games on the 360. As of now Xbox is the only console with any backwards compatibility. And all they had to do was release an update to allow it. I understand why the Nintendo Switch doesn't have any backwards compatibility, and that's because they went back to cartridge games, However Sony has no excuse other than greed.

The PS3 is designed to play PS1 games. Considering that PS1 games are on CD's and the PS3 can play CD's without an issue. PS1 games in anyway do NOT damage your PS3 console or the actual game it self.

I read somewhere that the first gen PS3 had a separate processor for PS2 emulation, which they did not put in the PS3 slim.

And no to all the people in these comments who already knew about this this isn't a stupid video because there is a rumor going around since PS3 can't play ps2 games there's a rumor it can't play ps1 games. So he does have a point in showing this. And main reason there's a difference between ps2 and ps1 games compatibility is because and yes I do know PS3 can play DVD movies but ps2 was a DVD rom which I believe has a different format DVD rom than a movie and ps1 was a cd rom not a DVD rom therefore a different format making cd rom ps1 games read in a PS3 and there actually was 2 models of PS3 that could play ps2 games and those models are now very rare to find as no one sells them when people get there hands on them. There were 2 models made for an 80 gig console a model with 2 USB ports and a model with 4 USB ports the 80 gig made model with 4 USB ports will play ps2 games. Also all 60 gig models will play ps2 games all 60 gig models had 4 USB ports as long as a console has 4 USB ports PS2 games will play. Also in the PS store there is a thing that's free to get called PlayStation 2 software in everyone's PS3 store but unless you have one of those 2 models you can't use the software

The ps3 and ps1 disc used the same kind of disc format. Sony wanted to try another kind of disc format on the ps2 that dose not work with any other play station but that kind of disc kept getting scratches unlike the ps1. Or sony forgot about ps1 and forgot to block the ps1 from working on the ps3.
My favorite PS1 game is Clock Tower 2, a sequel to the game, Clock Tower released on the SNES. Oh the memories... :)

I have the original 60gb version which has 4 front USB ports, a multi card reader, and has the emotion chip. This emotion chip allows it to play all PS2 games, while all PS3's can also play PS1 games. When PS5 comes out it will probably have emulation for PS3 games but not PS4. So original PS3 plays PS3, PS2,PS1 games.... all other versions of the PS3 console only play PS3, PS1 games.

The PS3 Slim does not have the hardware on board to actually play PS2 games. However for some reason, it can play games you bought from PSN Sotre with literally NO issues whatsoever, no slow downs or graphical glitches. Now, my question is: why?
The answer is quite simple, It is much easier to use Nostalgia to make money than to just let people who actually own disc copies of past generation games to play these games. This is exactly why the PS4 has NO physical backwards compatibility at all so they can make money from PS1, PS2 and PS3 remasters and ports.
However I will say that Microsoft has the right idea, allowing 360 games to be played on the Xbox One they also did this with original Xbox games on the 360. As of now Xbox is the only console with any backwards compatibility. And all they had to do was release an update to allow it.
I understand why the Nintendo Switch doesn't have any backwards compatibility, and that's because they went back to cartridge games, However Sony has no excuse other than greed.

The PS3 is designed to play PS1 games. Considering that PS1 games are on CD's and the PS3 can play CD's without an issue. PS1 games in anyway do NOT damage your PS3 console or the actual game it self.
The ps3 fat model can read ps2 games and ps1 games.
