The Sony kit lens is quite sharp, much better than most other cheap kit lenses. Its main shortcoming is the lacklustre aperture, especially at 70mm. But it's small and lightweight and with image stabilisation too. So it's a decent offering for many applications, less so with low light.

This lens is underrated. It's sharp, has OSS, and the build quality is acceptable. Most importantly is the price. I got mine with my a7II for an extra CAD $200. At today's exchange rate, that's USD $145. Why would anyone NOT get this lens for that price? It's the best bargain and value for money you could ever get.

I got the Sony a7II with the kit lens, being on a budget it was convenient that it included a lens with the body, this being my first and still only mirrorless camera with interchangeable lens. I think it's a great starter lens with someone on a budget, I've sense gotten a Sony 20mm G Lens with 1.8 which takes much better photos, but that being said, the kit lens even got me some great astrophotography. What makes the sony “kit” lens relevant in 2024 (and why I’m watching this video) is the new versions of the a7C. Having a much lighter option to the other 24-70 or 28-75 zooms to pair with the lightweight a7Cs allows for a camera/lens combo that delivers on the concept of a really lightweight full frame package. When you want to go light and use a zoom instead of a couple of primes, this lens may just make sense.

Probably the mere fact that I'm watching this video speaks volumes, however, I'm kind of getting tired of looking for these kind of reviews as it only puts in evidence how biased, shallow and at some point even hypocritical the photographer's community can be sometimes. One one side you have the ones that are obsessed with shooting in film even with old cameras. Taking into account the capabilities and quality of the equipment back then now that we have come so far, makes it feel ridiculous to be obsessing about details like the ones we tend to see in this type of videos. In the end I have seen amazing photos taken with ASPC entry level 5 year old cameras than the ones taken by a rich dude with a high end Hasselblad just released. It comes to skill, talent and passion more tan gear.

Most people who shoot full frames are doing it for professional reasons ( I.e. wedding photography) ' although even then , people still shoot apsc just fine in that case.'

@@JosephValenti I'm still browsing but someone did say these are not really needed being the places are not THAT large you need that type lens for. I'd still like to get one, though.

I would say 60% Gear 40% Skill for best results - but when first starting off it's probably more like 80% skill 20% gear

I really don’t think it’s horrible, I mean it’s a good starter lens if you have a used older gen camera that you gave to your kid or something
