In the "Pretending I'm A Superman" documentary one of the developers states that the park at the end of Downhill was redeveloped into Warehouse, not Chicago (the identical pool was a placeholder object, also used on the roof in the beta version of Downtown Minneapolis). This is why the small room you start in Warehouse exists, it would originally have connected to the outside area.
I like the format a lot too, looking forward to maybe seeing this with the other games It's really interesting to have the perspective of someone who worked on some of the games and knows the ins and outs of their level design
yo AND this was such a cool upload for youtube, not saying that the live streamed stuff isn't, but every second of this is so concise and informative. looking forward to more of the levels!
The one thing I'll give Burnside credit for is the line where you jump off funbox/kicker, do the over the bridge gap, and can land with a grind on the pipe's coping. Doing a Backflip over the bridge, into a One Footed Smith as Bob Burnquist just feels nice to pull off - especially on the n64 version where, iirc, you can spin during the backflip but can't on the ps1
Yep, my top two favorite levels are Mall and School. Streets has grown on me. Roswell is also my favorite competition level out of the first two games. I really like how you did a birds eye view and drew on what improvements to make. I have only caught a few of your twitch streams due to work schedules and am subbed, so I mostly watch your content here. Keep it up!
This is a REALLY good youtube video. It's not often anymore that I see a video and am really amazed at how entertaining and information-packed it is. And yes, you cant poo poo and not pee pee. Very good point Andy
Bro, I just discovered your channel, you are the one from THUG in the videos that show up when you left the menuscreen too much time without doing anything. I can not belive it, this made my day. Saludos desde Argentina
Good video and I agree with most of your points. I disagree a bit with Streets, but thats only cause the goals in Career are a bit too spread out and it makes it easily the most difficult level to one shot. But that isnt a huge issue overall. Id love to see more of these, at least THPS2-THAW.
So impressed with this video, Andy! I thought you were just gonna upload a VOD of you making the tier but you really went out your way to script, record and edit this video in such an entertaining way! Your explanations of the levels mixed with your art to show where you would've liked objects to be was a very nice touch. My only sort of criticism is maybe your voice sounded a little too scripted at times and not too natural but that really comes with time. Overall, great video! Really looking forward to the tier lists for 2, 3 & 4 if they're going to be in this kind of format. Great job!
I never knew that there was video playing in the Chicago level...wild I had this on the N64 and I guess never played this level on the PS1 when at friends houses.
16:10 to 16:14 was just insult to injury right there and it was very funny to me for some reason. also i love that you explained a lot about the levels in this video. and i never really understood the reason for the little quarterpipe at the very beginning of Downhill Jam above the Kicker/Funbox.
The argument that Burnside is a real life location is also less impactful when the aesthetics and visual uniqueness isn't really there.. It's a pretty bland looking and feeling level. Whereas Marseilles in THPS2 just looked much cooler. Had a vibe.
This is awesome type of content Andy! Your personality works well with it. Would love to see more like this for other games too. The amount you factored in here makes it the DEFINITIVE list for sure!
School 1 is god-tier to me. I often play THPS1 in emus if I'm chilling (podcast, gettin' high, meditation, any combo of the aforementioned, etc) and I've got a savestate that takes me straight to School 1 lol. It's super fun as a bonus in THUG 2 as well, which thanks to said game's engine, really unleashes the potential of this map. It's the one of the best examples to me of a level that is basically Zen-like in its simplicity, yet has so much to offer if you just let it happen.
This is a great list! It's great to hear analysis on these levels from someone who was not only involved in the design of later levels but is so good at the game too. Any plans to do this for the other games in the series?
@@thejanglezclan I don't care about 1+2 remastered or top wh players tbh. I'm glad you think he's not good enough to be involved in the conversation but that doesn't make him any less great when it comes to the originals or any less of an expert on both the engine and the level design.
@@CableOW I think he’s just a troll who got banned from Andy’s discord yesterday for being a troll, and he’s butthurt about it. He’s been leaving dumb comments on a few of Andy’s videos.
Both my brother and my friend independently said that Burnside was the best, and I thought I was in the fringe minority that hated it. It's even worse in later games and the remake because there aren't any good spots to do long combos.
“Pop shove-it in the garbage”- Andythps. Lol love it! Great video. I’ve been getting into the original 2 on N64 so I’m glad to see content on the old versions too.
I've grown to like all the levels in the remake but I hated streets and downtown in 1. I also love the levels you don't like. I'd be interested to see your takes on these levels as they appear in the remake. The updated engine helps some of the older levels really shine.
*gives Burnside an F* YES. 100%. KING. BURNSIDE FUCKING SUCKS. Every time i see Burnside in any skateboarding game, its always just garbage to me. Tony Hawk, Grind Session, ect. its just a bad park for a game, regardless of its history and accuracy to real life. Deserves the F. As for where i place everything compared to your list, i would put Downhill Jam at D personally, there's alot thats janky with it back in THPS1, Skate Park would get C in comparison, i actually quite like Skate Park ultimately, Streets would get B for just being too big/open with not much to work with (which is basically a common trope i find with bad extreme sports games. If the maps are too big/massive, its usually gonna be bad for multiple reasons including just big empty spots with not much to work with) and Roswell would get A just because for a competition level, its the best one of the 3 to me and has alot to offer and work with. I would also put Warehouse at D, even though i know i would be shot for that, but its just not that interesting to me even if memorable for being the first level ever and the only time i ever see it being interesting and cool to skate in was when THUG2 expanded it as "Tutorial"... and then that expansion never got used again, which is sad.
Burnside sucks *so hard.* It's awful. I can get through it no problem, but I never go there just to play it. Even the improved gameplay of 1+2 only does so much when the layout itself is against you.
Hey Andy, have you ever played the N64 versions? I'd love to see a video on those with you playing. I grew up with the N64 version of 1, and had the PS1 version of 2. Eventually I bought the N64 version of 2 because I liked the yellow cartridge (really) and years later got THPS1 on PS1. THPS3 was my first ever PS2 game and I never knew as a child it was released for N64 or even PS1 lol
@@andyTHPS music was certainly cut. Growing up with the nicely blue cartridge of THPS1, I was surprised by the PS1's sound design. I also think the N64 graphics were a bit improved. Penny for your thoughts on the Dreamcast version and THPS2x? Youre a rad inspiration, dude.
based list, especially the burnside and streets takes, if all the burnside reappearances were streets instead in future titles, i wouldn't mind at all. great video, hope to see you cover more th levels in the future, time to check the whole vod also, anybody knows what the 10 10 10 10 in the bottom right means? just curious
thanks! The 10 10 10 10 is a cheat for max stats. I wanted to use different skaters throughout the video, but didn't want to put the time into beating the game with each just to get full stats. 🤝
Mall to me has that perfect 50/50 of replay ability and 90s nostalgia. My absolute favorite
Love that map man

Thug 2 perfected The Warehouse. I loved that 2nd room!
I will never understand why Streets, out of all the levels, was the only one who NEVER got a remake in any Tony Hawk game until 1+2.
If were counting remakes than technically 2x was the first in 2001

I'm happy this re-affirms my opinion that Burnside is trash level design and I wasn't (just) a salty teenager that needed to git gud.

Gonna need one of these for every game, you are a beast!
Love to see a video of your opinion on how to make a good custom park in the editor, I really liked your insite.

Where are the other parts my man i need to see them
I haven't seen the whole vid, but in the event of a future all levels in the series list...
LA is S-tier
They really should have made the tram lines in San Fran grindable.
My favourite pro skater 1 level is the mall cuz it has the most to do, AND has an easy enough alien plush collectable to find.
I Still can’t get combos like you, legend
Part 2 when
Will you be ranking the second thps levels ? Please Andy

Burnside is the GOAT for tag. Sloppy lines make for great, hard fun.
Great video Andy. I like the pee pee and poo poo joke.
Training in Underground 2 was the best warehouse level imo.
Would love to see the same type of vid with THPS 2,3, and 4 all on PS1
Wait this sounds like a what we want an need in a new thps is andy tryin to tell us something
More vids like this please! Great work homie
Great video brother
In one San Francisco is the best level in my opinion.
Please do this for all tony games please very much appreciated the effort in this

Good video Andy!
Imagine if the ps4 and ps5 and current gen consoles were around in the 90s
Still waiting for the next part!
so, i am not the only one disliking burnside and chicago.
I think my fav map of all time is is skate street Ventura but from pro skater 1? I don’t even know maybe school lmao
Love this vid , more please

True for warehouse but it can’t be a (F) it’s just a cool simple level thts why it’s good, some things don’t flow 100% like u said
