American Wasteland is still one of my all time favs. I got into the series out of order, so I played THPS4 first in like 2004. Then got American Wasteland in 2005. (Got and played the previous games later on and enjoyed them).
The whole story and aesthetic for AW was just incredible to my 10 year old self. Since I hadn't played Underground yet, all the gameplay additions were actually interesting and new to me. Story was hilarious, but endearing, and the soundtrack... MY GOD, the soundtrack. The fact that the majority were all covers of older songs by some of the most popular 2000s punk bands, and I never even knew it. Seriously, I thought all of them were original songs by those bands. Absolutely phenomenal stuff.

I've been working my way through the THPS1+2 remake and as someone who is a huge fan of the first four THPS games, and played all of them on release, they've done a great job. The controls are perfectly ported, it looks great, the majority of the soundtrack is intact, and it looks like how I remember the first 2 games looking through my nostalgia goggles, which is the sweetspot for remasters. They've even added new skaters and videos in a pretty unobtrusive way. They' e also added a whole bucketload of optional challenges, which is a fantastic touch, and shows a good understanding of the games audience.

For a public, mass marketed product the level of quality in the rap portion of the soundtrack is unbelievable. Quas, public enemy, mr complex, nas, naughty by nature, anacron, qbert, busdriver, mr. Lif, aceyalone, etc. Pretty immaculate curation that showed a different side of rap music before the internet was really developed, when the mainstream was departing from the underground, and it wasnt as easy to access the styles presented in these OSTs.

Project 8 and THPV were and still are my favorite tony hawk games.. really based of nostalgia.. but i can respect the opinion of both especially going back to them in a year like 2024 based off of the modern skate games now (Skate, Session, XL, etc.) With all being said, those games were their own identity as games. I've heard this a lot about those games but you have to understand why they made them like that and being they never had a core storyline, strictly focusing on the main characters journey in a serious manner. I just had to give my 2 cents. Love this content!
Ps. i'm not a wasteland fan, just couldn't like it enough to play through it. So i understand his opinion

Usually Canadians get stumped out of the limelight but I was super pumped to have Canada in the game as a stereotypical snowy map with the ploughed roads.. it’s exactly how growing up skating in winter was lol, hockey nets and all (which make for a good rail flipped over) and also having Vancouver too and the vans slam city jam.. it’s sweet to be included and have 3 maps! always loved that.

I'm definitely a diehard fan of Underground 1 and American Wasteland, they're both really solid (if slightly janky) entries, although I have been going back and playing the PS1 Pro Skaters and I'm also having a lot of fun with them. After being spoiled for choice, the limited movesets in the earlier games force me to think and be more creative with how I approach the goals.
On a random note, I was about 12 when American Wasteland came out and I remember so many advertisements toting 'no loading screens' as the next big thing for the game and, technically, they were correct but I love how they just slapped these liminal hallways in between each level. There was something weird about leaving Hollywood and going through a closed down and abandoned strip mall to get to Beverly Hills or going through the parking lot from Beverly Hills to Santa Monica.
It was psuedo open world and looking back on it now I can appreciate the creativity the team had when dealing with the technical shortcoming of their engine. You can pinpoint when the previous level deloads and the next one loads because the icons in the compass just explode into different spots lmao

I was definitely the right audience for those 4 games and when Proving Ground came out, I played it but at that point it was all about the Skate series to me and a game that was a bit more realistic as opposed to arcade style.
Shoutout to Downhill Jam tho, playing that with my friends was fun.

  • @thomaspatton1991
    @thomaspatton1991 Месяц назад

One thing that I think gets glossed over in THUG2 is how the graphics and physics changed in tandem to reflect the mood of the game. The characters look more arcadey instad of trying to have any degree of realism (which I think THUG touched on to make the story somewhat relateable). Similarly, you can get a manual that manifests motorized wheels on the back of your skateboard to get a crazy amount of speed which you can use while skating around an alien station that can teleport you to an aztec temple and literal hell.
It's an insanely silly game, and I love it. It's flawed, but so much fun. Sticking with this style in THAW was the right move.....and then they lost focus and never got it back.

It might be cool to take another look later at some of the last-gen and portable versions of the games; there are a handful of them that are really interesting or technological marvels. Tony Hawk 1 for Game boy color was a sidescroller, and it was the inspiration for the Grimace GBC game released by mcdonalds last year; THPS2 for GBA was hilariously faithful despite the view change. THPS3 for N64 was the last game released for the console and does some really cool stuff with music stems to save on storage space. THPS4 for PS1 still manages to stay open-world even though it's still using Tony Hawk 2 as a base and it's really impressive! And then THUG2 for PSP actually managed to include more content than the PS2 game.

I enjoyed my time with P8 and PG, especially with the Nail-the-Trick mechanic. I'd always slip in a few NtT's in a line as doing a kickflip there gives higher pts than a normal kickflip. Also I don't remember getting performance issues when I played both games on the PS2.
Besides that, I still love the THUG games and THPS2 the most. The former for being the most fun games in the series, while the latter being the game that got me into the franchise back when I was 5 years old.

The games I actually played were THPS3, Sk8land (the Gameboy version of Wasteland iirc), and Proving Grounds. A friend got me 1+2 for my birthday and it's alright, but I've definitely lost my skateboarding cred after 15+ years of not playing anything.

Worth trying out the DS version of Downhill Jam if you haven't. That was actually the flagship version and imo it was way more fun. Not exclusively racing, plus you can manual! Lots of fun levels

40 hours for TPS1+2 is crazy. You can beat the whole thing in 10 or less easily

Hey shout out to a fellow Underground 2 lover :) I remember playing online in that game and seeing some absolute beasts tear up the maps and shred some unbelievable combos racking up points in the millions - total titans of skateboarding, wonder who they are and where they are now
Such a crying shame about the canned THPS3 remake, THPS 1 and 2 imo are not as interesting, while 3 is where some of my most favorite maps are, so I'd loooove for it to be brought into the modern era. Still hope they revive it someday.

It's good as long as you aren't determined to achieve sick on every challenge like I am, otherwise it's the worst game ever made

Maybe if you don't play every game in the series they hold up better. Because I only owned Underground and Proving ground, so I loved them both.

Yeah, I was a little surprised by that. Sure, it's not perfect, but... Come on, it has a lot of good things going for it

A lot of people get this wrong. There was a DLC called revert pact that added levels and skaters. The ability to revert was patched in for free around the same time.
I owned the game but not the DLC. Game was garbage anyway and didn't want to pay for it. Lol

American wasteland was the first video game I got when it was brand new. I beat the story on every difficulty so many times. It is my favorite game still today.

Still hoping for a thug 1, thug 2, and American wasteland remasters. I see them as kind of a trilogy. There fhe only reason i still have my 360 as i like to replay them every couple years.

Awesome video Son, I marathoned them earlier this year - was great to have them off the backlog list. It took a few months so was also able to try out actual skateboarding (not for me) and going down memory lane with all the 00's skate bands. You going to do an SSX Video? :P

Ohe thing that is very much worth mentioning with regards to the humor of the series is this. Tony Hawk (IRL) is a good friend of the original creators of Jackass. So them having that humor in the games makes a lot of sense
