So here's the thing with the Warehouse. Most of what people like it for is nostalgia, and ti does have some design problems, but what makes it great is that it's still a great level despite the design issues. It's clearly meant to be super simple intro to the game that has a limited amount of each of the elements that are the basis for the game (street, vet, etc.) It introduces you to a few different elements without being overwhelming and it's design flaws can be an advantage in that it prepares you for what won't work later on. The fact that the snaking grind around ends in a wall actually makes you think about how you how you'd need to play the game and what to look for to keep combos going. I think if the first level had perfect flow people would've expected to have their hand held a little more for the rest of the game. The Warehouse encourages roaming and sets the stage for the rest of the game. Although maybe this is just a difference in preference, as my favorite levels are the ones where I can be creative going from spot to spot and my least favorite are the downhill levels where there's really only ever a few options.
The THUG2 version is one of my favorite levels in the whole series, I love how the sprinklers link the new section and the classic part and how they turned the old "useless barrel QP" part into a bowl that you can spine transfer to and from the rest of the level
Why I think the first two games has the best levels is not only the fact that it's not afraid to put stuff somewhere for the sake of it's a video game. But also it's not overly concerned with making things flow perfectly. When you're out skating there's a lot of stuff that isn't skating friendly and you just make it work. It's why going through the levels in the remake is so fun because you have all these tools and you get to see how you can traverse the level
The Warehouse was on that one darn demo disk and it only had one song. And we would play that one level with that one song endlessly. That's gotta be why it's on like a mythical level. I knew people who never played the real game, but loved that dang demo disk demo to death. tldr, the warehouse is all a lot of people know of THPS
I played the warehouse dreamcast demo like I was a non-pro irl skater just rolling around hitting the different elements one at a time or back and forth, not comboing or doing superhuman unrealistic lines arcade-style. very zen, can recommend.
Completely agree with the fences, THPS is and always should stay an arcade combo game, in the same way that SSX is for snowboarding. It was done really good in 1+2.
I'm the youngest of 17 cousins. i remeber when one of my cousins got thps1. i was only 5. Every single one of us was wrapped around the tv fighting to try to get a chance to play the game. We eventually got our own copy and well all played that game so much. i remeber one time my sister was up all night trying to beat her high score at the skatepark level, and she got 1 million points. that was like ledgendary back in the day.i got ever new version of the game ever year for christmas from my grandmother. I remeber at one point a good amount of my familly was into skateboarding and a few still skate
I appreciate your content! I've learned a lot just from watching a few videos. Edit: Loved your breakdown of School & point about the designers in 1999 fighting to 'let the video game be a video game'
I remember the first time I played Downhill level, It was really hard to me to collect skate letter, specifically letter E and of course get the secret tape
I mean all these levels feel like home. Like parts of my hometown. THPS2 is more familiar to me, but THPS1 is like those early baby memories you have that you don't quite remember fully 😂
I personally HATE downhill jam so much, but at the same time I'm not that good at the game and the secret tape is one of the hardest in the whole game for me to get
This was really interesting content. I especially loved you opening up the maps and going deep into it with the pen and paper. That level of game design analysis is fascinating to me. I'd 100% watch more of this with the other games.
I always liked what Thug2 did thps lv1. The bowl on the upper ledge instead of just a QP, with high up railings for new flow. The second area behind the door, instead of smashing into the wall, u break thru it and get into the second area.
I consider School 1 the best level of all THPS levels period. It's amazing even in Thug 2, Thps 1+2 and still great even in the original despite limited tricks. No matter what mechanics you have or don't have, the level provides endless fun. I can't say the same with some maps in this game. Manuals and reverts in my opinion ruin Mall, Downhill Jam, and Streets. Where as School I is even better with these mechanics and adds replay value with things you couldn't do previously. Many prefer School 2 but the problem with that map is how it has repetitive lines, the structure of the ramps have no reason to be in certain locations, and the map needs manuals to have flow. School 1 manuals or no manuals is a perfect map.
i know its in the context of thps 1 but warehouse is really fun to play in thug pro. it flows really well with buttslaps, walrides and boostplants. it also has a cool visual aesthetic to it too
My first level was Chicago comp level because I was a skater since 95 and had every skating game for every system. So I got a demo disk that had a 2 min timer on that level and I played it for hours and hours waiting for the game to come out!!!!!
Fun Park from P8 was always hard to wrap my head around. I'd love to see your analysis on that one. I guess I'd be more fun for more advanced, tech players.
I mean, I like to play more technically sometimes, but I don't like the level. It's fine for what it is, and is passable to skate through. It's just too obnoxious and over the top. You're almost overstimulated when you get into the park because there's too much to do and the imagery and theming is seemingly all over the place. It would have been fine if they spaced everything out better and had a more consistent concept for the park overall.
I'm thinking crazily enough, most of these levels aged like a fine wine, because the new mechanics (as well as a couple of detail fixes here and there) made them so much more fun to play. I've always hated Burnside as well, but on THPS 1+2 with the modern mechanics, the wall-ride-able fences and the BEAUTIFUL moody rain... I think it's actually one of my favourites.
You will definitely be disappointed when you realize the later beta build of Thps1 in June, had a much better looking Downhill. The physics such as flip tricks also looked better.
Warehouse is a 9-10 for me because it's where it all started man. I remember getting the Pizza Hut Demo as a kid and it's all I could play until I get the full game. I get where you're coming from on some stuff but it's a iconic level
Ok just got to the 23:00 mark and I absolutely had no idea another company had a Demo for this in the early 2000s. Where exactly did you get the other demo? And that makes sense why you love the other demo Level so much and don't have as much nostalgia for Warehouse or at least that beginners Nostalgia
Warehouse's design issue is better as a tutorial level so I would call it an overall 6 as opposed to a 5. In terms of flow and continuity in the level, keeping things segmented out works perfectly. School is a 10/10 on all fronts, tons of options and creativity, encourages multiple runs. Mall is a 7 for me, really cool grungy feeling but it falls flat where the level ends when you hit the end and I'll not fault it for limitations but there's so many paths that you can take that it screams replay Chicago is a better Warehouse for me but I would still call it a 6, compact, segmented designs, it's ok but it feels basic compared to other competition locales Downtown is a 5, there is way too much open space and not a whole lot to do outside goals but getting a good score is rough Downhill Jam is a 4, Lot of hand holding in terms of lines and brutal jumps. It's a stage that's over before it really begins. Mall does linear better Burnside is just bad, 3. All vert and that's it, this only works if you get THPS4 mechanics involved. Streets is pretty solid but the open street spot doesn't give enough to work with. I would mark it maybe a 6 simply because it has more to do than Downtown. Roswell 8. Best Competition map of the game and works well with both Vert and Street Skate design in mind. The Design being Area 51 is also sick as hell.
I'd like to see u play non Tony hawk skate boarding games. we all know they're not as good but I'd like to hear what u gotta say about them. games like espn skateboarding or grind session
Warehouse was also the tutorial level, don’t forget. It was designed to teach you the basics of the game. The dead end QP’s let you practice canceling a grind when you reach a wall. The stair step QP’s let you practice transfers (before transfers were an actual mechanic. The taxi being an obstacle teaches you how to avoid obstacles. You have to practice steering around it so you don’t get tripped up. It’s an odd level to play once you know HOW to play, but before you know anything, it actually does a great job guiding you into a lesson where hopefully you’ll figure out the solution to something you’ll face later on in the game.
Useless commentary, but I don't get why eveyone thinks Area 51 and Roswell are the same thing. Area 51 is in Nevada. Roswell is in New Mexico. There is no connection between the two. The game calls the level Roswell, which is not Area 51. Anyway, fantastic video. Carry on! Oh and Downhill Jam is D tier at best : )

@@FraserSouris later on yes, but there weren't wall jumps/plants in the first game
@@dakotasillyman5495 I forgot about that. Then yeah, in OG THPS, grinds ending in walls would be less fun to play around with.
I mean it returned in THUG 2 but with an addition unlocked in the tutorial unless you already play it in freeskate
THUG2 improved Warehouse so much. I love that they added a bowl to the original section and then a whole new second section
The THUG2 version is one of my favorite levels in the whole series, I love how the sprinklers link the new section and the classic part and how they turned the old "useless barrel QP" part into a bowl that you can spine transfer to and from the rest of the level

Burnside is the most asymmetric, combo unfriendly park I've ever played in THPS3. It's infuriating.
But isn’t Chicago good for a point-getter rather than a task completer?
Warehouse is great as a tutorial with no instruction on how to play. It’s just as beautiful as Mario 1-1.
Warehouse's design issue is better as a tutorial level so I would call it an overall 6 as opposed to a 5. In terms of flow and continuity in the level, keeping things segmented out works perfectly.
