Personally I prefer the thumb throttle because it allows me to have my remaining fingers resting on the brake lever, in many cases as I was cruising around, a car pops out of a driveway or a garage without checking and having my finger right by the brake lever I many times could let go of the throttle and immediately yank on the brake to stop the bike, where on the half-twist throttle you're gripping on the throttle and your handle grip at all the time, so that additional fraction of time you need to let go it the twist and reach your fingers over the lever to then press hard on it, doesn't pass me the confidence of control feeling. It might be something just psychological but having my fingers ready to press the brake makes me feel in control of the bike, than the bike in control of me. So in my hike I also have a horn button wrapped around my handle grip, so my thumb its on the throttle, my index finger is by the horn button and the left 3 fingers on the brake lever. So while I brake I honk the heck out of the driver to wake him up while I stop my bike to avoid a collision. Seems a lot, but saved me every time. Thanks God.

I have been riding bicycles since I was 7 years old. July 14th 2002 I first rode my hammer ebike. I watched a lot of videos they said there's a lot of power but I didn't believe it LOL. So I take off I'm at the End of the Street faster than I can believe it it's a short Street. I was going to turn right but with the giant fat tires is not so easy so I almost believed then I went up on the sidewalk and crashed. And I hit my nub straight down on the sidewalk. And then I got up and rode 12 more miles and that was the most fun I've had in years. Sitting here trying to heal my foot then I lost my leg after years of trying to save it so I've hardly been anywhere except the doctor and shopping and now I am free yay yay for e-bikes and I used my stimulus for something good that should last me a very long time if I keep it maintained. It's a lot like a regular bicycle Minus the electric motor and being 70 pounds and the giant tires. I truly believe in E bikes. I was researching and the first ebike looks like a motorcycle was in 1895 but they didn't have the distance please do and that was made by Bosch I wonder if it was made in Rochester New York near me they have a place Bausch & Lomb well they used to.

That where short way twist throttles come in handy. You can rest your pointing finger on the break and still twist it. Or change the brakes. But thumb throttle is cool too. I just like twist better. But your points are valid. Look at quads these have thumb throttles for a reason. I ride long empty paths so of course I choose the twist. It’s an easy ride nothing to worry about.

Just bought my first ebike and it came with a thumb throttle that has cruise control built in. After holding the throttle down for approximately 6 seconds the cruise control kicks in and you can release the throttle and the bike maintains what ever speed you were going. To turn it off you simply tap either brake and it cuts off the motor. Love this feature, use it all the time on my 20 mile round trip commute to work.

    • @rubenrebenz1000

Seems companies are catering more to the commuter class. Bought a Gemini e bike it has slicks, thumb throttle, cruise control, 28AH, 750w motor, hydraulic disc brakes, 400lb load capacity. Not the highest specs but great value under $2000 including tax and shipping.

  • @codbug
    @codbug 2 года назад +2

My bike came with a half-twist. Used it for several months before trying out a cheap thumb throttle on a whim. Found I had way more precise speed control with the thumb throttle, a less cluttered cockpit, and more constant stability while also being able to keep my fingers rested on the brake lever at all times for an overall safer and more stable experience for someone who occasionally has to ride on ice and slush.
I've not experienced any of the downsides listed. My bike's controller has PAS and cruise control, I had more issues with bounce affecting throttle on the half-twist with my weight being partially distributed onto the throttle, and I routinely commute in sub-freezing temperatures without issue by simply wearing gloves--something I'd be doing in the cold, regardless of if I was on a bike or not.
May be worth mentioning that I've been playing video games for over 35 years and am a pianist, and have a strong, well-conditioned thumb, and possibly an under-developed wrist, so others' mileage may vary. The difference in analog precision for me however was night and day. To borrow an analogy from gaming, it was like switching from an analog stick to a mouse for aiming.

    • @jason.arthur.taylor
      @jason.arthur.taylor 8 месяцев назад

"The difference in analog precision for me however was night and day."
Are you saying that the half-twist throttle sucked because it was not analogue?

    • @codbug
      @codbug 8 месяцев назад

@@jason.arthur.taylor Nope, the operating word was precision. My thumb with no other forces being exerted on it could make much finer adjustments than my entire wrist which was also supporting part of my weight, gripping the handlebars for stability and keeping my fingers within reach of the brakes (and later my turn signals). It was easier to maintain a stable grip, especially over bumpy terrain and still have very precise control with flexing a loose thumb than twisting my entire wrist. With the thumb I could accelerate much more slowly and hold any speed I wanted without interference from any other factors.

Hey Mike, you have not mentioned the "feeling" of a twist throtle.
I have used the thumb throtle, but the twist has a major advantage: really controlling the motor. If you press the thumb throtle, you can feel a certain gradual power increasing, as you are pressing the thumb button. But with twist throtle, that's more let's say "fine tuned"
I can twist the throtle, just to keep the motor rotating really slow and being able to accelerate smoother, just like when having the more expensive controllers, for example ASI bac, or phaserunner. These controllers are known to keep the motor rotating. This of course applies only for mid drive motors, i have tested and noticed this while using bbs02b and bbshd motors.

A disadvantage of the half-twist is that you now have to find a "half grip" to fill out the end of the bar. If you use a full length normal grip, it gets too long and funky or it doesn't fit at all (hitting the curve part of the bar). The "half grip" is actually fairly hard to find and limits you to a small set of available grips.

If like me - a regular runner, jogger, trekker etc - you've tripped and fallen quite heavily onto you hands once or twice a year you probably also find that it's usually your thumb and thumb-base that breaks most of each fall's force - so you end up with a thumb that doesn't much like being kept 'muscled" and taut in a stiff position for very long. One advantage of that is you'll feel less inclined to use battery power for long stretches and keep fitter because your stiff aching thumb starts complaining after each 20 secs or so of thumb-throttling..

TIP: Half-twist throttle can be used as cruise control :)
Just push the grip thight against the throttle and it wil stay in place. No wrist fatigue anymore.
And i agree about the right side throttle . They should standardize the back rear shift to the left side to avoid this problem.
But on the other hand, a throttle is forbidden in many countries for pedal assist ebikes (max 350W or 25km/h).
With throttle it falls under the catagory motorised scooter/moped (above 350W and/or 25km\h)

greatly prefer a right hand half grip twist throttle. I also have motorcycle experience. A left hand throttle is dangerous in my opinion due to the mix of standards.
My worst throttle experience was on a motorized scooter which used a pull lever throttle on the right side. When I was climbing a hill, the bike wheelied which resulted in my loss of balance and pulling the throttle lever even harder to hold my grip on the handlebars. I flipped over and landed on my back and broke my shoulder blade on the asphalt. Very painful accident with months of slow recovery.

Left half twist. I have my gears on the right with a single brake cut off. The half twist IMO is by far the safest option for a throttle as you can ride without worry of triggering the throttle in a busy area. Experienced motorcycle riders may get on fine with a full twist but most people jumping on ebikes are not such people. Never wanted to try a thumb. I have one I want to use for regen braking tho. Cheers

I don't see how any kind of a twist throttle can be less likely to be accidentally activated than a thumb throttle, since your hands are always on the grips, but can easily be kept well away from a thumb throttle. To me, using a thumb throttle requires a deliberate choice. But, if it's a concern for you, that's cool, too. Whatever makes it safe and fun is the right thing.

  • @TheVirtuallyAddicted

Been a motorcycle rider for 52 years, ebike rider for 5 years. Living down under where we drive on the left side of the road, the tendency to mount a bike is from the left or gutter side, so it's easier the have the twist grip on the left. I predominantly use the throttle to assist take offs, much easier to get moving before cocking one's leg over to take up pedalling. I don't have a problem adjusting from one hand to the other between ebike and motor scooter which I still ride too. So if you drive on the right side of the road, RH throttle is best, and left side of the road LH throttle is best. I do prefer twist grip, Cheers

The half twist is by far the safest, I stopped adding full throttles because how dangerous they prove to be on electric bikes. Had a demo bike conversion for folks to test ride 1000 watt basic system with a full twist throttle. I had too many customers doing surprise wheelies in front of the shop! And if you drop it on the throttle side your bike can show you a few brake dance moves. Thumb throttle is good to do as you mentioned in your video switch sides with. I like to do this because I have played Evil Kanevil with my body on bikes all my life and some days one hand or the other may need a rest so I have screw on handle grips and will switch sides with my universal thumb throttle. P.s. I generally remove all gears and such systems from my personal build and only use the rear derailleur as a chain tensioner after bending and filing out guide to fit heavier single speed chains. I much prefer the thumb throttle on my kit ebike to the full twist throttle on my fat tire ebike. I put the thumb throttle on the left bar so no interference with the twist shifter on the right. I used to ride motorcycles too, and I still prefer it on the left. The biggest thing I dislike about the full twist throttle is that it's nowhere near as easy to modulate the power - you can't just feather on a little power, it *starts* at like half power. I only have my bike to compare to, maybe other full twist throttles are better than mine. I hope so.
As to getting a sore thumb? Nah. There's a secret. Put thumb pressure on the housing, not on the throttle lever. You can then roll your thumb a little up or down for more or less power. You don't need a lot of pressure to keep your thumb on the housing either. Thanks again Micah for another great video!

It's pretty difficult to signal properly when it forces you to remove your hand from the throttle. I also think many manufacturers are losing sales to former motorcycle riders who want a twist throttle.

Half twist throttle, on the right, works best for me. I'm used to it there, and my thumb is free to shift without letting go of the throttle. I sometimes take my modified RadMini on mountain bike trails, and I'd run into trouble trying to hang onto a full twist throttle.

Cool, thanks! Is a left half throttle more helpful in a quick reaction situation where you need to slam on the rear (right side) brakes?

I agree about the left side thumb throttle being a bit awkward but I do think it is the best option for e-bikes with the torque-sensing setup since its a secondary control

The thumb throttle on my Juiced Bike is on the left side. It doesn't interfere with the shifter. Control is shared by the brake lever only. Personally, I only use the throttle when starting off or on steep hills.

Hi Mick, here Tom from Holland, I like your channel and your books, they have helped me a lot, could you do a video on controllers, how they work and what the main differences are between the cheap aliexpress kunteng controllers and for instance Infineon and Phaserunner controllers? Thanks, regards Tom

I am glad I watched your video because I just bought a e bike with the half twist throttle and was thinking about going to a thumb throttle. So for now I will use the one I have and see how I like it before I decide to change it. I also agree with you on the right side throttle since I rode a motorcycle for many years and that is also what I am use to. first timer on your video and now I am going to subscribe as soon as I finish this comment. Thank you.

This is another great video. I am in agreement with you about the right side throttle. Having ridden every conceivable type of powered 2 wheeler during my lifetime, getting used to a left side would just be too weird. My current bike has a left side thumb throttle and I don't like it at all. I would like to see you do 2 new videos. One would be a how to on wiring in accessories to existing controllers. For horns, lights, etc. The other world be on how to convert a thumb throttle to half or full twist. Any special pickups, etc. or are they all standard and just work right (see what I did there) out of the box?

I would very much like to see elegant solutions for handle bar controls as far as diy conversions go... so far the solutions I see work, but look like a cool science experiment = no sleek design. If you have suggestions or references I would be very gratefull.

    I designed and built my own e-bike. I have 2 1,000 watt tires. I go 36mph for 25 miles per charge .
I first started with 2 (left and right) half twist throttles. This became difficult to use due to hand fatigue. Plus the half twist came with peddle assist.
I then moved to 2 thumb throttles. With the thumb throttle you do not get peddle assist.
The half twist cost a lot more then the thumb throttle.
My bike setup cost for the half twist throttles came to around $2100.00. With the thumb throttles it came to around $1500.00.
Having an all wheel drive e-bike gives you enough torque to throw your head back.
I start off with one then use the other.
With one I can do around 32mph with an average of 23mph. With both throttles I can do a constant 36mph even up hill.
These ebike tires have a RPM rating. Which basically means your tires will only travel so fast.
I use my ebike to ride to work. I put my bike in the hanger, go to work, then go home. I do not ride my ebike anywhere I would have to leave it. Even though I do have an expensive bike chain. I'm always worried someone would damage it trying to pull parts off the bike. The battery alone is over $500.00. So resale value could be up to $100. People now days don't care. It's all about them and if they can't get what they want they'll damage it.
Where I live e-bike are considered a motor vehicle. Which means you have to ride in the street. People don't care. I've been almost hit because people in cars and trucks only see a bicycle. They don't know the laws.
If someone ever hits me or they pull out in front of me and I go flying over their hood, it's going to hurt. I don't care how much safety gear you wear.
The biggest problem is people need to be educated on the rights of an e-biker.

Now aged 73 and having driven and ridden all sorts of cars and bikes I thought I was fully conversant with most cable and sprung throttlesa. Always will be a twist grip guy though. All my life I have been or at least tried to have been a courteous driver and rider. I now have a huge problem. When I used to drive trucks and sometimes cars, if I had a full and heavy load and could see that I was holding up traffic I could give them two ways of me telling I knew they were there and also by either opening my drivers window could wave them through if the way ahead was clear or could indicate and tell them by using my flashers. Neither I know are really street legal here in the UK but are generally accepted as good manners. Now to my problem with my three wheeler motability electric scooter. Mine, because it is listed as being for Continental use also has a three position setting for throttle. 1 = 4mph for use on sidewalk (pavement here in the UK. 2 = 8mph for use on all roads and highways and then 3 =15 mph for Continental roads or private land. Throttle is smooth in increasing speed in all selections, however If and when traffic is building up behind I dare not let go of the spring loaded throttle as it shuts off power so quickly I know that before I can signal using the standard circled hand then the traffic behind me would be grinding me into the pavement. Know what I mean ?
Is there any way of modifying this shut down? I must admit that it's almost handy as I shut down speed in increments when approaching a junction, however I'm sure I can get used to that rather than causing a crash. Any and all ideas welcome . Great show and thank you. Regards Alan

As a long time motorcyclist I am well accustomed to a twist throttle. I have used a thumb throttle on an atv. In very rough terrain I hit a bump, inadvertently accelerated, and ended upside down under the atv. So, yeah, thumb throttles for me are no. Never tried one but the half throttle sounds real good and may be something I would really like.

I ride motorcycles, so am used to the twist throttle. Having said that, have taken several test ride while shopping for an ebike. All have the left thumb throttle. I adjusted so I will go with the ebike that meets my other needs and not worry about the throttle placement.

My girlfriend has cerebral palsy. I built her an electric trike. She used to have a full twist but the hall sensor went bad and I replaced it with a thumb throttle which works better for her because she has gotten scared in the past and floored the throttle. Luckily the brake safety switches are connected so all I had to do was grab a brake handle. With the thumb throttle she instinctively let go of the throttle instead of squeezing down on it.

You can have a twist throttle with a grip shifter easily. Just put the throttle on the other side. It's not that natural but you get used to it easily especially if you have a midrive and you need to shift often, sometime 2-3 gears at once (that's why I'm using the twist shifter). For me that's the best configuration and it works perfectly. While using a thumb throttle or shifter I found that tendon inflammation occurs much often

Eureka! I viewed your excellent videos and tried adding a thumb to my Himiway Cruiser with not altogether satisfactory results and off it came. I prefer to twist but found the half-grip throttle clumsy to modulate. Then an epiphany: Those flattened comfy grips are the problem. As I try to rotate the throttle with the right side of my palm, the left side is held in place by the right-side half-grip. I replaced both grips with conventional round grips slightly smaller in diameter than the throttle and now I have great control. The shape of the new grips allows my palm to slip in concert with the rotation of the throttle. What do you think? Have I just advanced the half-throttle solution, at least for this setup?
